While I'm boring and only drink black cold brew coffee, they did have a range of specialty coffees with different spices and syrups that weren't for me but that looked interesting. Five Watt is one of my favorite coffee spots in the Twin Cities. I've had nearly every specialty drink on their menu, tried the coffees black, had espressos here, and haven't had a bad experience yet. If you do come for a visit though, I definitely recommend the specialty drinks as they are truly unique. Some of the combinations may sound funny, but they are all great. The Kingfield location is smaller, has good music (not too loud), provides easy access to outlets, and has secured wifi (so if you need to use your work laptop on a secured network, you'll be able to use your computer). It's not the quietest, most serene coffee shop, but I'd say that it's a good spot to catch up with another friend or two, or for a study/work session with some headphones. I moved out of state a few months ago, but had this on my bucket list before moving, and have had to stop by every time I visit the Twin Cities. read more

Before moving out of state, I made a bucket list of places I wanted to visit. Five Watt Coffee was on that list. Coincidentally, I had made an appointment at a salon without knowing it was next-door to Five Watt. I stopped in before my service and enjoyed a Kingfield, one of their popular specialty drinks. The salt was such a good addition to this drink, making it uniquely flavored and delicious. I would love to visit their new location as well and try out some of their other coffees. It was busy when I was there on a Wednesday around 11:30AM. It would have been hard for me to find a spot to sit at had I not taken my coffee to-go. I was on a road trip and found this coffee shop in a blog article. I decided to drive over and hour out of my way to try it because I always have to try out new coffee places when I'm somewhere new. The reason I wanted to come here was because they carried gluten free pastries (which are rare to come by still). The atmosphere was great and they had tables outside which I loved sitting at as it was a perfect day for it! I loved my almond milk latte and gluten free lemon poppyseed muffin (my favorite kind). I drink black drip coffee. No cream no sugar. No nothing. So I need a really good cup of coffee. 5 Watt is consistently that, just consistently that. And the folks that work there are friendly. The only thing I might explore 5 Watters, are the tips to your cup. The top/cup leaks a little- not enough to keep me away, but a little. I think the top is biodegradable so if I gotta trade coffee on my shirt for a happier planet, It's a good trade. read more

Love love love this coffee place! By far Five Watt is one my favorite places to be in Minnesota after exploring New York and learning how savory coffee should be! Five Watt Coffee has an amazing vibe when you enter! They're super chill and hip feeling! The staff is always positive and lively here and I couldn't ask for a better experience with them! If you're not a coffee person at all trust me you'll become one after you try out Five Watt Coffee. When arriving I was not sure what to get but lots of friends recommended The Kingsfield! I highly recommend it and also get it iced! Trust me you will not regret it! The Kingsfiled has a salty after taste so be prepared for the kick. It is known as a black Hawaiian sea salt but having it iced is a huge game changer! That is all I have been drinking consistently since I'm now an avid Five Watt Coffee customer now! Great coffee, a little on the pricey side, but they definitely cater to the high end coffee crowd. Got what was essentially an iced red eye, except it was cold brew and it came out to just over $5 with a tip. Regardless the price was worth it for the taste and caffeination. But I will say this:I have been a number of hipster joints where the staff were total jackasses. The staff here were very friendly, and totally patient with a square old man and his two kids who to everyone else must appear to be high on cocaine. I didn't like what I ordered at all. It was gross. But it was exactly more or less what I ordered. So that's on me. The space is cool. Prices were reasonable I thought. Regardless of my experience I'd recommend this place. read more

I went here after school and the place was packed but I managed to find a spot to sit by the window with my friend. The staff were friendly and asked me about my day which was very sweet. :) My latte was fabulous and I really liked the feel of the whole cafe. There's a lot of free parking right next to the cafe. I had to parallel park and I usually am terrible but, like I said, there's a lot of parking space so I didn't have trouble. The wifi shut off at one point but my friend talked to the staff and they fixed it right away, so no further problems after that. read more

Love this place. As a barista myself I'm always looking for good spots in the twin cities to get good coffee. This was perfect for a day like today with a -30 windchill. The atmosphere is great, I love the artwork. The service is quick and friendly and it seems like a good crowd of people in the place itself. We had the Chaider which is a chai tea made with apple cider, it was great. & the starfox 64 ( which I already love this drink because of the video game reference) which was also delicious. I use a wireless BlueTherm Duo thermocouple to monitor my temperatures. I have Arduino robots and apps that log everything I brew. I have a VST refractometer and I'm very familiar with spectrophotometers and bioanalyzers that differentiate and authenticate different types of coffee beans through genetic sequencing. I buy 60lb bags of un-roasted beans and roast them at my house. #youknowwww - Ice Cube voice. I work for a Fortune 500 company and I've been to the secret labs where they build your phones. All of them. Yeah, even you with the flip phone. Stuff that keeps your grandparents alive? Yep that stuff too. Space shuttle stuff? Yezzirr. I have traveled to almost every single state in the US and have visited hundreds of coffee shops during my travels. Blue Bottle, Intelligentsia, Stumptown, Philz, Cartel, Bar Nine, Exo, Portola, Kean's, etc etc etc... I make it a point to visit every coffee shop I can get into while I travel because coffee is a passion of mine. ANYWAY! Not to sound like a self-aggrandizing ****head, but you get where I'm going with this. I love coffee. I know good coffee. I've been to the 'best of the best' and I have a deep understanding of technology and coffee quality. Minneapolis Coffee... While I was here I visited Peace Coffee, Dogwood, Bull Run, Kopplin's, Angry Catfish, Bean Factory, and a bunch of others that weren't that memorable. Some were decent, some were mediocre. I think Dogwood was probably the best out of that list. Dogwood certainly had a huge assortment of pro coffee hardware. Enter Five Watt: by far the best coffee shop in Minneapolis, and now in my 'Top 5' across the US. Here's why: When you walk in you can tell that the coffee shop is progressive and unique. They use a ModBar. They use the Mahlkonig EK43 that Matt Perger used in the WBC 2013. They use bitters and spices. These are all tools that require an expert level understanding of coffee taste and aroma. The use of any one of those items is a huge risk for a coffee shop to take... let alone all of them. If you want to taste the future of coffee, go to Five Watt. They're on the right track. The coffee quality is great. It's organic and fair trade. The creams are organic. If you can't tell the difference between organic and non-organic foods, go to Whole Foods more often. Organic organic organic. The shop is non-pretentious. Usually when you're dealing with progressive shops you get a big taste of douchebag with your order. It's pretty refreshing to know that you can take someone 'new' to this shop and they won't feel bad about themselves when they leave. Everyone seemed really friendly. Huge advantage over some California Bay Area shops... and NYC lol. The Five Watt baristas knew the hardware they were working with. That's important, because no matter how much you spend on the hardware, it's only as a good as the technical expertise of the barista. I don't know how many times I've been to other specialty shops where a barista is treating a $20,000 piece of hardware like a Keurig. Five Watt uses most of the 'single-cup' brew methods and has a bunch of specialty drinks. You have options. Great options. Unique options. Five Watt has high-speed internet. I don't know how many times I've been to coffee shops that don't have internet. It's almost 2015! If you live in Minneapolis and you go to any other coffee shop, you're doing your city a disservice. If you're a coffee investor and you don't hate yourself, throw money at Five Watt. Get them global. If you're visiting Minneapolis, don't waste your time at the other shops like I did. Go straight to Five Watt. If you own a coffee shop, take notes. You're not doing it as well as Five Watt. #realtalk read more

It's a pretty safe bet to say that Five Watt is my favorite coffee shop in all the Twin Cities. It's also probably one of the closest coffee shops too to my house, so that really helps! But I love coming here (very!) often not just for the amazing coffee. (Oh and believe me, it IS amazing!); but it's really about the people and the service that I get. The baristas are so friendly and passionate about their coffee. I love it! I want to try all their specialty coffee drinks, like the Kingfield, I really do! But... I always just get their drip coffee. No sugar, No cream - - the way coffee is meant to be. And it's so.damn.good! Kick-a-poo is their roaster, I believe. And tastes so good. For drip coffee, the small is the same price as their large -- so go big! :) read more

I like to buy coffee from people who love coffee, and these people are my people. Despite the fact that I don't even live in Minneapolis right now, I've been a fairly regular fixture at Five Watt since they opened. I'm usually camped out there at least two or three times every time I'm home because I have so much love for this place, its coffee, its people. A couple of the old Bull Run fellas, Caleb and Lee, opened up this beautiful shop, complete with garage door and good vibes. They serve up solid soundtracks, quick wifi and Kickapoo Coffee from Viroqua, WI. Here, the classic drinks are done very well (I usually get the cold press or a latte), but they also have a unique set of (non-alcoholic) coffee cocktails that should not be ignored. Really impressive stuff, like black walnut bitters or juniper/basil -- things you'd expect to be served with a heap of pretentiousness on the side, but not here. It's just obscenely good coffee, made by obscenely nice people. Another reason I love this place to bits is because it's really helped revitalize this Kingfield corner. A community-oriented sort of spot like this one has given the neighborhood an entirely new vibe and makes it all the more welcoming for more new businesses to move in nearby. Lots to like about that. I'm oddly passionate about something my future sister-in-law and I call "vacation lattes." A "vacation latte" is the latte you go out to get while you're on vacation that your real life (and your real wallet) would never allow. The gold-standard "vacation latte" is so creamy that it has a mouth feel of something like light egg nog and a perfect proportion of espresso and milk so there's a rich depth and multi-layered tones, like a good Spanish wine: the savory, the smokey, and the bitterness. It's the full mouth extravaganza of some barista in leggings knocking your socks off. I'll be honest: I don't really care where this "vacation latte" is pulled, be it in an antique store that smells like burning sandwiches, or a tiny cupboard under the stairs in San Francisco, or a warehouse in an alley. I just want the latte to be a fucking mic drop. With that said: the "vacation latte" I had at Five Watt was fine. It had a decent mouth feel- something between the runny nothingness of Caribou and the thick wallop of Bull Run. I love that they use Kickapoo Coffee, partly in principle because I'm over the Dogwood Coffee Trust but mostly because the roast was gentle, nutty, and uniquely flavorful. But the proportion of espresso to milk was just... off. The espresso had to fight to shine through, which means either too much milk was used or the espresso roast is too subtle. Either way, the flavor peaked and then disappeared- no bass. The cold, hard truth of specialty coffee drinks is that you're paying for heated milk, guys. It's heated milk ($.25), and a $.25 amount of espresso. When you've paid $5 for a latte, you're paying a pretty incredible mark-up for the two to be intertwined perfectly. PROS: Fantastic coffee (tired 4 of their specials so far and would recommend all of them- hot or cold). Its up there with Bull Run. Given that it was started by former Bull Run employees, that makes sense. Plenty of outlets (this is always key), comfortable seating, good lighting, and the staff rocks! Friendliest I've come across in a while. CONS: It was a pretty hot summer day. Despite ordering an iced coffee, it was still a little to hot in there for comfort. It is a relatively new place so I'm not sure if they have the HVAC system under control yet. Only one restroom too. Can't help but feel the pressure when I'm in there! PARKING: No private lot that I know of yet, and moderate amount of street parking. All-in-all, Bull Run is home, Five Watt is home away from home. A huge plus is they're open till 9 pm on weekends for these long study/work days. read more

I propose a toast. Gather one, gather all! Here's to the new King of Kingfield! (and all the Yelpers erupt) Everyone wants to spend time in the King's court. It feels so good to be treated like royalty (sorry, Lorde). That's what I love about Five Watt (or, one of the many things I'm about to list) - there is NO pretentious vibe here. Behind the counter is a set of people who love coffee, and those on the other side of the counter - people. It's a refreshing feeling to be somewhere, be myself, and enjoy coffee. If you dig down through the wood floors to the foundation of Five Watt you'd find "creativity" as a capstone for this shop. Good gracious that drink bodacious! But seriously, the combination of flavors in a COFFEE drink is what gets me. Bitters, juniper, basil = cocktail coffee. You really have to trust me on this, the flavors are awesome. I've had the Orange Blossom Special and the Kingfield. I've watched as random locals pop into this shop - the earmark of a truly neighborhood coffee shop. I've overheard as people order "blended" drinks (think: frappuccino, which isn't an option) and leave raving instead about any of the iced drinks. This really is a coffee shop for anyone. Let me start off by saying I don't like coffee. I wish I did, I really, really, really wish I did, but I don't. No amount of sugar, milk, cream or syrup helps me drink it. So why am I writing a review for a coffee shop? Because this place is the bomb! They have scrabble and Jenga, two of my favorite games and they make a 'fancy' coffee drink with tea instead of coffee! It is delicious! And, since my partner loves this place I am happy I have found something to drink here as well. I've never come on the weekend but it sounds like a great time. They have smooth, pleasing coffee (I did my test latte and sadly didn't try one of their signature drinks, but don't cry for me Minnesota, I'll be back to try the Hendrick's latte) and FRESH and HOMEMADE-TASTING TREATS. Marching in on a Sunday with my three toddlers in tow is usually a good meter of a place's customer service, and the sweet barista traded compliments with my little ladies as The G and I ordered ALL THE THINGS.
