A truly on point , hip coffee shop. From homemade bitters to some really unique concoctions mixed with some edge and personality, this place has got it going on. I want to use the word "hipster" to describe it. I stopped by for a caffeine fix before taking the kids to Mall Of America because, duh, I was going to need something to help me conquer that place with two little girls in tow. I tried the "Holy Moly" which was cold brew, agave, habanero hellfire shrub, ancho chile and mole spray. Definitely had a big kick, but it was delish!! Very unique. It was hard to choose just one of their carefully crafted specialty drinks to enjoy. You can see a lot of thought is put into creating each and every drink. The price certainly reflects that, but I don't mind paying it for a fantastic beverage. Sometimes you need to treat yourself to something other than blah coffee from run of the mill coffee chains. I seek places like this out (it's actually become a new obsession) and this stop was exactly what I was looking for. Way to go! This place is great for getting some work done or catching up with friends. There are a few tables outside. It's bigger and has a small stage in the back for open mic nights! Wow.. this place was simply cool. From the staff being hip, to the location and on to the crowd being super eclectic. The Kingfield (I had it cold) was great with the corriander and sea salt and the cold brew was strong and distinctly flavored with chicory. They roast some of their coffee and get some from a local roaster out of Wisconsin. The pastries looked so great, it was difficult to decide. But the Chocolate Chip muffin was so moist and filled with chocolate chips--perfect! The almond croissant was also delicious. If you're looking to try something unique but has some caffeine in it, try the DeVille: iced coffee with fizzy water, cherry syrup, & cherry bitters with a smokey flavor. It didn't taste like a coffee (it was somewhat sweet and did taste a lot like cherry) but it was an interesting and unique experience. Brilliant, creative coffee. I came here with several friends on Saturday morning and everyone left feeling caffeinated and happy. I had one of the Pro Bar pourover options and a Gibraltar - espresso cut with a little bit of heated milk, steamed not quite as hot as a typical latte. Other friends had their one-of-a-Minneapolis-kind specialty lattes, crafted with cocktail bitters, spices, and citrus flavors, and they were in love. The Kingfield (vanilla, coriander, espresso, milk, black Hawaiian sea salt) was particularly popular. The baristas take care to make each of the drinks as top-notch as possible, and I'll echo the sentiment that they are extremely patient in answering questions and figuring out which choice is best for each customer. But if you're in a hurry on a weekend morning, this might not be the place for you. The line stretched out the door and with only 2 employees behind the counter, things took much longer than would be ideal. In addition to the excellent coffee, Five Watt serves pastries and individual-size Sweet Science ice cream cups. There's ample seating available and the wi-fi is strong. By far one of the coolest coffee shops in the twin cities. I can't get over how creative the drink concoctions are. Lavender, grapefruit bitters, coriander, honey and so much more. The two flavor combos were the perfect balance for a refreshing flavor. A few extra tips - this location is a little small so the seating can be sparse, especially on a busy afternoon. Entering Five Watt for the first time I would think there are three unwritten rules. 1) No one over 30 allowed. 2) Laptop or Tablet required. 3) No collared shirts. I broke at least two of the laws. I am well over 30, I have an i-Phone but I did have a U of M Maroon t- shirt. The garage door was opened as the weekday mid-afternoon crowd quietly went about their work. The atmosphere is a perfect urban shop. The friendly barrista explained about their roaster and different roasts of coffee they use. She even pointed out where there was available seating, no one has done that before in a crowded place. Alton Brown frequents Five Watt when he comes to MSP and I creeped up on him once when he was loading his tour van and annoyingly made him take a picture with me so we're best friends now and I like Five Watt too. Five Watt has a solid regular and rotating menu of classics and specialty caffeinated drinks. My two faves so far are: The Kingfield (vanilla, Five Watt coriander Bitters, espresso, milk, and black Hawaiian sea salt), and the May Day (a cold press with salted lavender syrup, Five Watt grapefruit bitters). I've had another seasonal drink that had cherries in it, and enjoyed that too, though I forget the name. As for food, there aren't a lot of options, mostly just cold case and bakery items (from Patisserie 46!). Its almost criminal how good this place is. It shouldn't be a surprise though, Five Watt starts with friendly staff, builds on that with great coffee and finishes off with awesome ingredients. It is obvious that these guys have a real passion for what they are doing here. The staff is friendly. The atmosphere is comfortable and I was impressed with the equipment and flair they use to make their coffee. It is close to my house and really I want to make this my daily stop for coffee or cold press. Also the prices are good. There is an extensive list of unique coffees to choose from. My girlfriend loves the tea selection! They have a big open window and a nice patio. I had a few complaints to start off, and I was immediately contacted by one of the owners and he addressed my concerns. So they obviously care about what they're doing here. After a long morning of lots of walking, lunch at Blackbird across the street, it seemed necessary to fuel up on coffee at Five Watt. I loved all of their creative concoctions! I had The Kingfield and my husband at the Big Easy. I usually order black coffee but absolutely didn't mind the delicious items that were included in my drink. Holy yum. I rarely get specialty coffee drinks because they are kind of a splurge for me, calorie wise. But I heard these are worth it, and they are. I got the Katy perry. Cold press with rhubarb bitters and some foam on top. It was delicious. Everyone here was very cordial including the patrons. They have free wifi and free street parking too. There are a few outside tables which I sat at for hours doing work, so I had no complaints. There drinks are a little pricey but was delicious. Wait. Have I seriously not reviewed Five Watt yet?! It almost feels unnecessary, given all the positive reviews that I agree with. I've never had a drink I didn't like, even the plain cold press kicks ass (with both caffeine and taste), and I am somehow always really super productive here. A few things: One of the best things I have ever tasted in my life was their seasonal The Real Panther (though I may be biased since it was a Yelp flavor)...most interesting coffee drink I've ever had. Those stone fruit flavors just melded so well with the coffee and dark chocolate - I need to replicate this somehow in other foods, seriously. Definitely gained an extra few pounds in the weeks it was around. I've seen some reviews about the hipster vibe...okay, maybe, but I don't think any of the baristas I've interacted with have been anything but efficient, engaging, and actually really friendly for Minnesotans. Part of the reason to come here is the outstanding, smiley service. Sunday Service is really fun. My husband and I like to come here with newspapers or books or whatever for some Kingfields (me) or Big Easies (sp?) (him) and get some sweet sweet smooth stylin's from the organist as a bonus. Note to any dairy-allergic/avoider friends: Their almond milk is quite sweet - if you're getting a sweeter drink made with almond milk, I'd ask for a little less of whatever sweet syrup they are using in the drink - I've had issues finishing more than a quarter of a drink before because of how cloying it ends up being. Ok, ok, ok... I may be overly exuberant about Five Watt, but I can't begin to express how much I adore this place. I've been to quite a few coffee shops and by far, this is my favorite in Minnesota. Their drink menu changes periodically, so I typically stick to their famous "Kingfield" latte. Robust aromas of freshly ground coffee beans, sweet vanilla, coriander bitters, warm milk, and black Hawaiian sea salt. One sip and you'll recognize the goodness of quality espresso. MMmmmm, I'm drooling just writing about it! I'm going to have to be a little more adventurous and try out their other specialty drinks, though. The baristas are always so kind and likable. A very modern sleek coffeehouse in Minneapolis. A wonderfully diverse selection of coffee drinks that can be pricey depending on your choice. If you like to stay simple, staying in can get you a refillable cup to continue to enjoy the coffee as you work or visit. The environment is great, I would be able to get work done if I wanted to. All of the tables are along one wall, and when I visited, there was one person at each, so I was left without a table indoors. There is also a bar to sit at to look out the window which would be a great place to spend a couple of hours. There is also outdoor seating available. The coffee was great, and the staff was even better. They know all about their menu and can help you make a selection. I was helped to save money by selecting the smaller cup but being able to refill throughout my visit. Though I could see how the environment and variety of intricate drinks could intimidate a new customer, the staff makes it inviting and makes sure you find the right choice for you. I rated it 4 stars simply due to the high price of the coffee drinks. Black coffee is comparable prices to chains, but the intricate mixed coffee drinks can be fairly pricey. read more

There are some things in life you never knew you needed to know until presented with the situation. Walking into the Five Watt bathroom and being presented with four different types of toilet paper presented an existential dilemma I never would have foreseen. My first few thoughts were - 'Is Charmin really the best toilet paper? Or were the other ones more popular and thus changed more recently? How does the industrial roll factor into this? It's probably 4x the size in terms of absolute length.' I was keenly aware that I didn't need to go for a #2 so perhaps I may never know. But carpe diem, right? Charmin is definitely the winner, like a smooth silk robe. Not even sure why Scott is even in the race because it might as well be generic government toilet paper. Okay - coffee. Five Watt has a pretty wide selection of specialty drinks that I have yet to try. I'm a black coffee type of guy and they do it well. Five Watt does their own roasting, which I'm really glad to see more shops embrace. Their selection is pretty limited, but I seem to have gotten their house blend. Smooth, not very bitter, roasted just right so there's plenty of flavor without the burnt taste (think Starbucks). Not sure if they have a pour over or Chemex option but that would really bring out the flavor. Another plus is their pastries, which they seem to source from Patisserie 46 - one of the best bakeries in the area. Five Watt is easily one of my favorite places to do work. The patrons are pretty low key (i.e. quiet), the wifi is plenty fast, and the ambiance is just perfect. The key to a good coffee shop is the placement of electrical outlets and Five Watt has them next to just about every table. Its open pretty late for coffee shops in the area too (10p). In the summer, they roll up the doors to let the breeze in. read more

The coffee is tasty but not worth the price. This is coming from someone who lives about two blocks away from Five Watt - it is the most convenient coffee shop for me to go to. Even still, my roommates and I get in the car and drive to get coffee elsewhere because we don't feel the prices are worth it. The concept of the drinks is great. Using bitters in coffee is awesome, and they are yummy drinks. But so is Up Coffee Roasters just down the street, or anywhere else in Minneapolis, and they are probably more reasonably priced. Five Watt's mochas are good but not $6 good. If you're fine with the price this is a great place to go and the interior is very nice. However, with such a huge coffee scene in Minneapolis there are many places I'd recommend visiting instead. read more
