I have attended 2 different classes at Flagship Maritime. After having trouble getting all of my documentation in order a year later Jan Anderson was very helpful in helping me make my application a year after I attended my class. I just finished my 50 ton license and Jan also helped me with that as well. Skip was good with instruction and training. The class atmosphere was casual and friendly. I have a Merchant Marine Credential, (25 ton limited) and attended Flagship to upgrade as well as earn my OUPV, or 6-Pack license. Before class even began, I knew I'd come to the right place. The room was set up with a large desk for each student, and each workspace had all the workbooks, reference materials, charts, and tools laid out with precision. This set the tone that would carry through the entire course. Organized, efficient, and orderly. The instructor, Skip Anderson, is a navy veteran with obvious and ample experience. He runs a tight ship, but keeps things moving and peppers his straightforward instruction with just the right amount of personal anecdotes to support the material covered. His wife Jan is the registrar and works with each student to complete and submit their application. The two of them as s team have this down like clockwork. Side note: during my class, the Coast Guard came to audit the program; their 1st audit in 5 years. The only concern that Skip and Jan had was the impact on the students and the possibility that our schedule would be impacted. As it turned out, the auditor saw every thing needed in about 2 hours, and Flagship passed w/no deficiencies that I know of. At this time, my application is in the review process at the NMC, so I am in License Limbo... but I know that Flagship got me everything I needed and more. If I could leave six stars I would! If you're ready to get your captains license there's no question, Flagship is the place to go. The facility is perfect, with every little detail thought through to give you the best experience possible. Skip is a legend! Not only does he teach you the material but has so much real life experience he can deliver it in a way that sticks by telling a story that really paints a picture. Skip and Jan have worked hard to customize the material in a way that makes it easy to learn. If you don't already know, this is not just a class but a full credentialing service. This is EXTREMELY valuable, as submitting your packet to the coast guard is actually a difficult and detailed process with a lot of paperwork involved. Jan knows her stuff! I was blown away at how detailed she was with every aspect of my packet's submittal. Jan literally takes all of the hand written information you give her, goes over every detail and retypes it all so there are no holdups at the NMC. Never imagined I'd be taking a OUPV Captain's Class but after a few friends had taken the class, I decided to as well. Good decision. The week long class is well-organized and taught in a non-intimidating manner. Great workspace with large desks, natural lighting, and all supplies were furnished. The class is taught in 4 modules and I found the material expanded my mariner knowledge and gave me a bit more confidence in handling our 36 foot sailboat. I now have a firm grasp of the rules of the road. Skip is a great teacher, patient and methodical. Wish I'd found this class 20 years ago! read more
