Red flag #1: Bark N Bubbles is a crate free environment with no requirements to provide vaccination records. Crate free is cute for dogs who need to socialize, but providing vaccination records should be a must for every owner. Red flag #2: I dropped my dog off at 9:30am with DJ, described how I wanted him groomed, and she told me it should take about 2.5 hours; so I planned to pick him up at 12pm. I got busy and realized 12:30pm rolled around and I hadn't heard anything. I called and DJ said my dog should be done around 1pm. I arrived at 1pm and that leads me to... Red flag #3: My dog was on the hair cutting table unattended and whining while the groomer (who WAS NOT DJ) corralled dogs back into the grooming station. They told me my dog needed another 30 minutes. I waited for 43 minutes for a total of 4 hours for this grooming session. It has *never* taken my dog 4 hours at any groomer. Red flag #4: The groomer cut my dog. He said verbatim: "He did a really good job. The only thing is he got startled and the razor cut him a little bit. He didn't bleed and it only looks bad right now because it's stretched out." I'm curious to know what startled my dog, and whether it could have been the fact that the dogs are groomed in the front of the store where other dogs are free to roam, bark, and play. They also do it right by the front door, so literally anything could have startled my poor dog. I would like to add that when I arrived, I did not speak to my dog excitedly nor did I stay within his field of vision. I sat in the back, out of sight, and the groomer even commented, "I don't think he knew you were here" before telling me about the cut. Red flag #5: I dropped my dog off with DJ but when I came back to pick him up, DJ was nowhere to be found. I'm glad I arrived when I did because I had to tell the groomer how to cut my mini poodle's fur. I thought groomers knew to leave poodle tails a little fluffy but maybe that's my mistake for assuming. My frustration is really with the fact that I explained to DJ how I wanted my dog to look, and DJ wasn't the one grooming my dog. The other dogs in the salon were stressed out, which I was able to observe for the 43 minutes I waited for my dog. They are understaffed, which was clear by the way the front desk employee left a dog unattended on a table as well so that she could help another owner. I am a human and this entire process stressed me out. Imagine what our dogs could be feeling. Please do better Bark N Bubbles. The 2 stars is for DJ's friendly energy and that is all. Overall I'm extremely disappointed.

My client tends to wait until the dog is long overdue for a grooming to ask me to schedule for her so I knew that she was in rough shape and acknowledged that she was probably going to be matted and need shaved down. After one too many negative experiences at other groomers I decided to try Bark N Bubbles Doggie Day spa. The mobile website was a little wonky but overall pretty easy to use and the lady I spoke with on the phone was super helpful in getting us set up and scheduled. I also appreciated the emails and text reminders. Now for the groom: I was expecting to pick up a naked mole rat due to needing to shave the mats, but instead they took the time and care and patience to shave the spots that needed to be but brushed out her tail and ears and face so she looks really rather fantastic! I was really pleased with the whole process and look forward to regularly using and also recommending Bark N Bubbles to others!

I wanted to volunteer with animals, and I was frustrated by the larger organizations extremely limited opportunities and complicated process to volunteer. No, I didn't want to read a 50 page manual and take a test just to clean cages. I wanted to make a big difference in the lives of dogs and help Chicago become a no-kill city. Surely, it couldn't be that hard to find an organization with no red tape and an easy process to volunteer. Enter: New Leash on Life. I found them about 2.5 years ago on this Yelp page with their address listed downtown. I later realized this downtown address was only a PO Box which means NLOL does not have a physical location/adoption center. The implication of this is that all dogs go straight from rescue into foster homes until they find their forever families. This process can take weeks or sometimes months - depending on the dog. Don't let the uncertainty of a timeline deter you - fostering for New Leash is an absolute dream and here are my top three reasons why: 1. Unparalleled people - the nicest and most sincere adoption counselors. They constantly check up on the pups, their progress, and making sure you as a foster have everything you need. Not just via email- typically by text messages which means a quick response time. 2. Super flexible - a. Vacation or trip? No problem! New Leash will work with you and your schedule b. Work long hours? No problem! New Leash can schedule a walker to come during the day 3. And last but not least, THE DOGS. They really know how to pick them. Every dog that I've fostered has been kind hearted, adorable, and an A++ cuddler. Every dog deserves the right to a loving, safe home. Yes fostering is a short term arrangement, but it's a critical piece to helping these pups find their long term forever. Whether it be general health, spay/neuter or ear cropping this place is wonderful. I have seen many people come in with dire situations come in begging for help for their animals and every time they were allowed a payment plan or some other form of help for their pets. Dr. Koshy truly cares for animals and their humans. They seem to specialize in pit breeds - there's pits there every time I've ever been. I did get my dog's ears cropped here and have no complaints. If you're looking for affordable veterinary care, this is the place!!

It must be a tough job being a vet, especially here with the population they serve tends to not be the most educated on pet ownership, and clients having a tough time with money. They are known for doing a lot of ear crops and I hear they are good at it. It's literally the oldest animal hospital in Chicago, and it looks it. It's old, rusted, ok I'll just say it- it's pretty ghetto. If you are used to Lincoln Park businesses like me, you may be a little culture shocked. Before I even walked in, I heard crazy aggressive barking from the street. I walk in to two Hispanic guys each beating their pit bulls and the dogs are going completely nuts trying to attack anyone who's in the waiting area, and the dog's not even on a leash. It's not the vet's fault though. The vets have him go straight to a room. Lots of pit bulls. And many of the owners don't train or socialize their dogs. Another Pit was covered in mange, another had injuries. This is NOT the fault of the business, it's just to give you an idea. Like I said, nothing fancy. But they gave me the medication I needed for a dog and it worked out fine. Go here if you need medical attention for your pet and have limited money.

Their care and concern for the puppies was evident. They also helped us select the right dog food and essential accessories, which helped us immensely. They were honest about his lack of housebreaking and leash training, and directed us to sources for assistance in those areas. Since we got Mulder just before he was scheduled to be neutered, MARS provided a $75 rebate with proof that the dog was fixed (required with the adoption contract), which was sent to my PayPal account. He was also up-to-date on his puppy series shots and very healthy. Although we never needed it (yea!) also knowing that I had a month of free health insurance for Mulder was also very comforting, as was his microchipping. Throughout the process MARS representatives have been very responsive and communicative, answering even the "tough questions" and concerns. I'm sorry for the experiences that people had 2 years ago, a sick puppy is no fun. Thankfully, our experience with MARS has been excellent in every way, and I would definitely adopt from this no-kill rescue again.

I asked TONS of questions and wrote a few lengthy emails- All of which Alex responded to usually within a few hours and took the time to go over everything I wanted to know in detail. We weren't getting this kind of attention with other rescues, so it was a great feeling to see how much they care about their animals and finding them good homes! When we went to our adoption event, they offered to stay a day late since we couldn't make it for their original time due to a family wedding. They gave us all of Bailey's medical records and explained everything on there. They made some great recommendations for food, treats, toys, and keeping her healthy. We took Bailey home that day, and couldn't be happier! She's a wonderful pup, and has been a wonderful addition to our family!

What disturbed me most was a comment: when discussing the kitten's condition, the security guard stated that the cone would not be necessary because the kitten would be euthanized due to being found with a prolapsed rectum. I found this comment extremely insensitive and upsetting, especially considering the vulnerable and emotional nature of the situation. Despite being there for a matter involving a hurt animal seeking support. I was under the impression The Department of Animal Welfare, Care & Control states that it is dedicated to protecting the well-being of both animals and residents while promoting humane and responsible treatment. Unfortunately, my experience did not reflect those values. The manner They spoke to and approached me was unnecessary and disrespectful. After looking further into the matter, I also noticed multiple public reviews from others describing similar experiences. One review left by Natalie Flores approximately three months ago stated that a security guard and another worker were overheard speaking negatively about residents and making comments about "how dumb residents are and their lack of brain cells." Reading that, alongside my own experience, was extremely concerning and disheartening. As a young resident in the community, seeing residents and visitors being treated poorly in a place that is supposed to provide care, compassion, and support is honestly hurtful.
