After searching & asking around for months (literally), I luckily came across Fleischman. In a sea of skin fade barber shops in NY & elsewhere, I was relieved and skeptical. Lucky for me, I found Tricia and she was exceptional. The vibe was relaxed and very chill, which i appreciate compared to a shitshow chaotic salon or barber. Admittedly, and communicated to her on arrival, getting my longer hair cut just a few times a year makes me an even bigger pain in the ass than normal. That said, she was patient and clearly very knowledgeable. Tricia took time to listen and understand what I was trying to accomplish with this cut and then guided me through and executed her process. I had a 2:00pm appointment and called to inform them that I was running a few minutes late. I arrived at 2:06pm and the front desk informed me that the stylist, I believe her name was Allison, was just finishing up with a client. I waited and watched as the stylist and her client engaged in a conversation for at least 15 minutes. Finally, I just left, my afternoon ruined. I've been to several salons here in NYC and this one was definitely one of the most accommodating. They offer you something to drink right as you come in and then let's not forget to mention the insanely comfortable chairs. Everyone is kind and professional. My first time visiting was yesterday and I sat with Emma. Lovely person and cut exactly to my suggestion, however I personally didn't like the cut too much (my fault). Positives: Easy to book. Friendly staff. Convenient location. Negatives: Haircut was terrible. I can't say that I have ever had to trim my hair after a haircut to fix some of the issues, but this time I did and it still is bad. It wasn't immediately noticeable afterwards because of the product they put in, but it was clearly terribly done. I had no idea how transformational going to a real salon could be. The environment at Fleischman is extremely welcoming and the staff is the most knowledgeable of any I have encountered. The confidence I leave Fleischman with after each haircut is unexplainable. I will never go to another salon / haircutter / barber because this one is home. So ... who is responsible the best haircut I have ever gotten: Kait. She is phenomenal with the scissors, but an even better person. Before jumping into a cut, Kait takes the time to get to know you and figure out what you do to maintain your hair, before she assesses what style cut is best for you. She welcomes questions and has great tips on how to style your hair at home, so it always comes out looking like you just left the salon. My fiancé paid $100 to barely get his hair cut. Apparently, he couldn't get a hard part, couldn't get his sides cut shorter than a 2 and faded, and couldn't get what he straight up told the lady he wanted. He basically paid $10 for the semi-haircut and $90 for all of the suggestions. Be advised that if you do not have long hair, then they will refuse to cut your hair and suggest you grow it out. She's so thorough and kind and always makes sure we are clear on what I want and what she will do--I've experienced many salons/barbers who don't do this. I am a huge fan of this salon. Sure, it looks cool, and sure you can have a beer/scotch/water while you are there - but that's not even the part that makes it so great! The thing that really makes this a great experience is that you work together with your stylist to figure out what you really want from your haircut. Of all the touted men's salons, this is the one that actually takes the time to discuss your cut, what works for you/your style/your hair. This shows in the cut - instead of getting a haircut once a month I can go 2-3 months between cuts because the cut lasts and looks great. Came here like a couple of months ago to test the water. Randomly came across their website skimmed through it, thought it was cool, chic and modern. The owner is Erica, loudmouth and condescending. As a client can I hear you guys insult the other clients after they leave, this is unprofessional. Cheap liquor is offered before the haircut to blurr your perception of a good haircut. The stylist I had was nice but she didnt know how to cut hair. What bothered me the most was that she kept insisting she would make my hair look amazing better than before. I essentially got a mushroom hair. WTF! I didnt even bother asking her to fix it because she probably would have ruined it even more. I wanted a simple scissor cut for my side part. Why would you leave the back and sides longer than the top and front of my hair??? If you have a slickback or is a balding old white guy this salon is for you because thats all they know how to cut. Young guys stay away. For the price point and for the haircut I received I should have gone to a 15$ barbershop If you guys have straight thick hair do not come here. I had a hairstylist for years and had to stop seeing him so for a few months I struggled looking for somebody that gives me the trust that they know what they're doing and the comfort to just let them work without constant direction. I ran into the salon online and read the reviews it sounded interesting, pricy but I was willing to try it for what i read from customers. So I gave Mackenzie a click and booked her and from the moment I stepped in she was both laid back and professional and made me feel like i could just relax and let do her magic. I'm so happy to have found this location as well as my excellent stylist, Trish. The environment of the space is great - upscale but still casual. It feels like a unique place, and the services and amenities are great (like complimentary drinks ranging from espresso to whisky!) I've been working with Trish for a couple years and I was just telling her how consistent her work is. For me that's really important. She does quality work and repeats that quality every time. Even though I've never had a complaint, I feel like she and the salon would take me seriously. Only down side is the price. After months of getting his hair cut at John Allan's, he would walk out with his hair butchered and chopped, walking out worse than when he walked in. I had a great experience with Angie as my stylist. I stated that I liked the length of my hair and the versatility of it, and Angie talked me through her plans to maintain the length while cleaning up the sides and back. She left me with a low-maintenance haircut, that looks like the hair will grow in nicely. I also asked for tips on how to style my hair for different looks (i.e. clean and neat vs. fresh towel dry), blow drying, and using hair products. She was helpful with all of that. If you're like me, you get antsy about telling a barber exactly what you want done, with what clipper size, and hope he/she comes up with the right cut. No nervousness with Angie -- the she was supportive and collaborative to make sure the style was right. It was worth it to pay up from a barber and get a stylist's help. read more

I absolutely love coming here. The environment is relaxed and fun, but still professional. Being offered a complimentary scotch, tequila, or beer to go along with your hair wash/head massage and hot facial towel is a godsend on a stressful work day. I could walk out of here feeling completely satisfied even before the haircut itself. I've worked with Gabby and Mackenzie (at 56th St), and Yasmeen (over at the east location). All three ladies have done a fantastic job. Each time the haircut is a little bit different (they're different people after all) but it's always within the parameters of what I request, and they add their own professional suggestions, know-how, and flair to it, making me feel confident that I'm in the hands of solid craftspeople. After years of paying bottom of the barrel prices to get cheap "good enough" maintenance cuts, I am so happy I made the jump to a place like Fleischman. It's worth absolutely every penny. My only regret is that I waited until my hair was thinning to take its styling seriously, but even that is something the Fleischman ladies have helped me with - they are fountains of knowledge when it comes to hair styling, products, tools, technique, etc. and their advice has been very helpful and practical. Busy New Yorkers beware. I was just turned away from my very first appointment (having succumbed to years of being spammed on social media with sponsored ads/content from Fleischman) on account of arriving 10 minutes late. While I was not aware of the draconian arrival time policy, the confirmation email I received did state the policy in fine print at the bottom. No matter, though, I arrived within the 10 minute grace period (indeed, right at 6:10 for a 6:00 appointment something one of the receptionists admitted after chatting with another customer and then telling me at 6:12 I was too late and needed to leave). The stylist was nowhere to be seen (my best guess is a determination was made before my arrival that the appointment would be cancelled and the stylist was enjoying some downtime) and all of the chairs but one were empty. Having ran across town, experienced subway delays, and done my very best to arrive right at 6:00, a bit of understanding/flexibility (or, frankly, consistent application of an outrageous policy regarding a 10 minute grace period) would have been nice rather than being booted out with a smirk from two receptionists. I have lived in this city for much of my life and cannot recall such disrespectful treatment of a new customer. Rather than spending dollars on spamming me on social media, Fleischman might consider reallocating those dollars towards training employees on how to treat new customers and figuring out a way to manage bookings such that clients aren't turned away with an eye roll. read more

This salon is a prime example of "You get what you pay for." I have always tried to go cheap for my haircuts, and I've been the victim of many bad cuts. But paying a little extra compared to what I am used to, is well worth it here. You not only get immense expertise, you also get this sense that the stylist really cares about how you look. Before making appointment with this salon I read their reviews and I like what I read. So I decided to check it out and made an appointment with them. I also checked out their website before making appointment and decided on what style I would like. I was pretty excite for new hair style and all. According to reviews they offer water bottles and whisky if client likes. So Based on reviews I was expecting place to be very modern and upscale. But unfortunately I was so disappointed as soon as I walked in. There was nothing upscale. Yes sure I did see ONE bottle of whiskey which was less than half, no water bottles. There was a tv on the wall playing some children show when there was no kids around. Tv was oldest model of LCD and probably 20 inches or so. There were couple of chairs for people waiting. You would expect to see some hair style/products related material such as magazines or hair style books. But unfortunately nothing all. My hair stylist did offer me something to drink but I said No. I was expecting my hair stylist to discuss with me what I would like. But again nothing. I asked her about hair style books so I can show her what I would like. But I was told that they don't have any hair style Books. So I asked then how do you style your clients hair ? She replied that client describe what they want and we go from there. I was like what ? Seriously no hair style book ? Luckily I had taken a picture of hair style from their website that I liked. I showed her the picture and I was told that she can't do this exact style but she will try to come close to it. So if their stylish don't know the hair style that they have advertised on their website then why even advertised such style that they can't offer ?? Yes sadly she did not do anything like what I showed her. I was so disappointed. I was very upset but calm myself as I didn't want to create a scene there. So my experience is so freaking disappointing. I was very well aware of their charges and I had no problem with it that's why I went there. I expected great style and great service. But their service did not match their price. There is nothing great about this salon. It's a regular salon with tall mirrors, regular lighting. Yes I give them for offering whiskey and having sofs style chairs for client. That's about it. Oh yes no product offering for Clients like you would expect from upscale salons. Every haircut is accompanied with a warm and welcoming vibe and she made me feel very comfortable from the very first session (considering its hard for me because I don't trust too many people with my haircut).
