This is my go-to in New York. If you are just looking for a cheap haircut or like Sports Cuts, you are not going to like this place. If you have ever been to a fine French restaurant, from the moment you sit down the waiter is in control, not you, and with will conduct your meal for a perfect experience. From my experience Barbering by Marcus is somewhat similar, the best thing you can do is to express what it is you are looking for and let them take control. You are almost guaranteed to like the results, I have never had a bad experience. There is a lot of old-school pomp and rituals that help add to the experience and justify the price. I am the kind of person that likes to just give a minimal idea of what I want and tell the person cutting my hair to do as they will. I think I respect but may not be for everyone is that they will tell you if they disagree with what you want. Good haircut. Disingenuous experience. I've gotten my haircut at this place 3x. They've always given me a good haircut, but I've been really disappointed by the experience. The 2nd time I got a haircut there, it cost $40 more than the first time. When I asked why, they said it was because I had a 45 minute cut. I thought that was weird because i didn't ask for that, I just asked for a haircut. The 3rd time I made sure to select 30 minutes online in the booking. When asked if I wanted scissors or a razor, I said scissors and they gave me and charged me for the 45 minute haircut without telling me scissors meant a 45 minute haircut. I brought up that I thought this was weird they didn't tell me I was opting in for a more expensive experience and saw no remorse from the staff member. I will not be coming back here despite the quality product. read more

Horrible customer service. Booked an appointment with Marcus, for 11am. Traveled 1.5 half to get there, paid $40 in parking, to arrive 9 minutes late and being told i can not get a cut because he wouldn't have enough time to cut my hair. Total disregard for a new customer, didn't care at all about the time and money i had already spent to get a cut. This guy came highly recommend, but he runs his business like a lemon tree, booking clients every 30 min like a revolving door. He's also among the most mellow, tranquil, and even-tempered people I know -- it often feels like I'm getting a meditation / relaxation session that just happens to have a killer haircut mixed in. I had an appointment for noon that I made two weeks ago, I'm DIY-ing my own wedding and thought this would be a nice treat. I just missed my train and called them to let them know I'll be running 10 to 15 minutes late. I asked him specifically on the phone if that was OK, or should I reschedule or not bother coming today because I live in Brooklyn and it's a journey. He said it would be fine. Thanks to the trains, I showed up 22 minutes late to my appointment and found that I was the only customer in an empty salon. When I informed the person who greeted me what I was there for and mentioned that I had called, Oliver came out from behind the back deliberately lingering and looking at his wrist watch for 5 seconds like tsk tsk tsk as if to shame me. Then proceeds to tell me that he has another appointment at 12:30 and can't take me. When I asked why he simply didn't mention that on the phone when I asked if I should still come to save myself the trip in, he got very defensive and dismissive. Nothing but attitude from the host and Oliver from minute 1. At that point I decided the vibe in here was definitely not right. NO CUSTOMERS in the salon, mind you. ZERO customers. And pretty poor customer service. Never again. Find another spot, this one is garbage. read more

Went to Blind Barber (as this was my barber back in LA), but that didn't suffice. Stumbled upon Barbering by Marcus and I haven't left since... I've been coming here for the last 2 years and recommend to anyone & everyone. My barber is Ryon, but everyone is legit - Marcus, Rolin and Oliver. However, Ryon is a magician with the clippers (best fades) & with the scissors. It's difficult to find a barber with the right combination, especially with Asian hair and glad I found this spot & Ryon, more specifically. On top of the haircut, the place has a great vibe for a barbershop (good people, good conversation, good music and good drinks). I moved within Manhattan about 2 years ago and when I was fed up with making the trip to my previous barber, which was by my old apartment, I found Barbering by Marcus. I have been coming to Rolin since my first time there and could not be more pleased with my experience. First, the salon itself is always clean and a relaxing experience and everyone is very pleasant. Rolin is professional and looks to build a personal relationship with his clients to build trust and an understanding of what you are looking for. I have never walked away with a bad cut. On top of the excellent salon experience, it's easy to book an appointment online with just a few clicks which is a great time-saver for my busy schedule. I normally go a barbershop near my apartment, but have been unusually busy and needed a haircut, so I made an appointment near my office here after seeing the great reviews. I accidentally made an appointment for 12pm, but then made another one for 11pm. They called and emailed regarding the double booking, and I prompted emailed them back, as I was unable to pick up the phone at work. I arrived a few minutes early, and gave my name. As soon as I said my name, Rolin, who was to be my barber, spoke to me in an incredibly condescending and accusatory tone, saying that I hadn't responded to their messages, and that they had in fact given my appointment slot away. I was shocked, and replied calmly that I had emailed back right away (their voicemail asked me to call back or email back). They checked, and did not acknowledge their mistake and did not apologize. There was a woman there who had been waiting, who they gave the appointment to, and now because of their negligence they put both of us in an awkward situation. She really needed the haircut because she needed to get to a meeting, so I let her take my slot, as it was not her fault. This was to be my first time here, but I will not come here again. First, Rolin started my cut by complaining about his previous customer, who wanted to pay with a $100 bill. Personally, I didn't get it (- if you charge $65+ for your cuts, shouldn't you occasionally expect and be prepared to see a $100 bill?). Second, I brought a magazine clip as a "suggested" style and Rolin obliged, but clearly showed (a little playfully, but also rudely) he was irritated at that - and later explicitly stated his annoyance (- sorry, I thought it was part of the job to work with a customer?). At the end, Rolin flipped the part in my hair (left-to-right) without warning, which I thought was weird and asked about that. He flipped himself at that mere comment - and all I wanted at that moment was to get out of there (as politely as I could). Insult to injury, he kept saying I should be thankful that he didn't have anyone after me (- but maybe he forgot he started with me at least 30mins late). Maybe Rolin had a very bad, no-good day. The cut was just OK, but it was a very unpleasant ordeal. I since found a better barber 1-block away, same cost, better cut, with far better service, no fuss. read more

$65 for precise haircut with the works. But you better bring a photo or else you might get chastised. "DETAIL-ORIENTED BARBER LACKING ETIQUETTE" would have to be my review title for this interview. I kind of had a mini episode with the barbershop owner Marcus, so let me tell my story: I had been eyeing this barbershop for a while, and decided to finally pay it a visit for a modern super-short-on-sides-longish-in-front haircut. I don't normally get this haircut, but this seemed like the place that could handle my 21st century order (for god's sake there's a picture of a dude with a mohawk on the outer placard!). The beginning was all nice enough, a lady took my coat, washed my hair, offered me a drink. Then I sat down and got introduced to my barber (unbeknownst to me, was Marcus). I described my quasi-macklemore haircut (a disconnected undercut, I had always been told) and we were off. During the cut we chatted about South America, music, Thanksgiving, and hair. Towards the end, he asked if i was content with his work, however my hair wasn't tight enough on the edges (too much of a stark contrast i guess?) so I asked him if he could tighten up the sides more. He complied but proceeded to complain about how I had "Told him the wrong thing" and how this haircut "could have been over already", I apologized and asked him what I should have asked for instead (at this point I was a little shocked that a stylist would speak to his client this way) he said "No you said the right thing, just you could have said you wanted it tighter on the edges". WTF? At the end, sitting in the chair, he asked if I wanted product in my hair, I said yes and to slick it back. He became even more upset, "Why didn't you tell me you were going to slick it back in the beginning?" he asked "Then I would have known what you wanted!". I was speechless. I felt like I was being scolded by a parent. It's not as if I was going to wear my hair slicked back all the time. To add further embarrassment, their credit-card reader wouldn't accept my Wells Fargo card so I had to go and hunt for cash in the cold. I also found out the cut was 65 instead of 50 because I got my hair cut by "The Great Marcus". While I went to grab cash, I wrote a quick 1-star negative Yelp review saying $65 wasn't worth getting scolded by my barber when I could get that for free from my mother. Even if the cut was solid. When I came back, I was asked to step outside by Marcus, where he confronted me about my Yelp review, complained how because of my 'complicated order' he had to push back his other clients (the salon was empty??) and missed his lunch break. As if this was my problem. Despite this he offered to reimburse me for my haircut (in hope that I would change my review). I politely declined his offer, paid for my overpriced haircut and left. The worst part was my haircut didn't even take that long compared to $20 Barbershops i've been to. While I appreciate Marcus trying to make things right, his etiquette (or lack thereof) left a bitter taste in my mouth. I won't be going back. read more

That said, when you sit down in Marcus's barber chair, you will not be getting a haircut; you will be witnessing greatness! He is an artist on the next level. Marcus is highly skilled, intensely focused (like a surgeon), and extremely detail oriented! I held off on writing this since his calendar gets booked. However, I feel like it's my obligation to share in this case. If you still wear an old navy shirt and flip flops and don't pay attention to details it won't be worth it for you. However, If you appreciate people who are masters at their profession, and want a great haircut, go to Marcus! I didn't think I would give them 2 starts but yea...Meh I've experienced better. I was very clear on what I was looking for in my beard trim. Sleek, straight lines. I said I wanted to look sculpted, and gave explicit instructions. Started off on the wrong foote right away. While working on my neck line it was very rounded. Not what I wanted, and not level. I kept having to tell him it's not level. He asked if I was happy and I said no. It's not flat at the Adam's apple, and he kept going shorter. Then around the cheek a similar situation. Not level, too rounded. Not what I had asked for. He kept saying, it's pretty even. Eventually I had to say, I am not looking for pretty even. I am looking for even. There is a difference. He also asked if I would like it just cut with clippers, I said no I want it fully sculpted. I actually said I want to look perfectly fresh and ready to hit the streets. Straight razor. I said I didn't want to have to do anything when I left. He did the cheeks with that but left my neck buzzed? Only in NYC can you pay $30 for a beard trim and have to go home and shave. This man did not know how to sculpt a beard. I went here due to the yelp reviews. The price didn't matter. Ok I'm a bit booshie, but I live in Manhattan and am paying $30 for someone else to mold and sculpt my beard. It's a little ridiculous to most people outside of the metro area. I guess I had high expectations that this was the spot to get an edged beard. I went in with plenty to work with, to get that fresh straight razor sculpt, and they didn't come through. And a hot towel doesn't justify the cost when it's not backed by quality. I don't mind dropping a dime at Franks chop shop for a sick fade, but they have skills. Even now that I am home showing my wife she's like the cheek line is flat and this one is angled. SMH...I guess life goes one right. 1st world problems...now it's time to let it all grow back and find the real spot in town to get a solid sculpt. Not sure where that is, but probably heading to Ace, Grumd, or Barber on Perl. Not returning here. It's tricky to say exactly what he does right since it seems so effortless. But with somewhat curly and unruly hair, he's always able to tame it into something great... in ways that few others were able to. Amazingly professional. So I knew something was up when I saw that everyone loved Rolin so I decided to make an appointment and he absolutely lived up to the hype. Previously I was going between an undercut when I go out and a comb over for work, it was ok but not ideal. Rolin fixed all that. As soon as I walked in and told the front desk my name Rolin looked over and had an idea of what I was going for. They washed the wax/hairspray out of my hair and asked if I would like a drink, always a nice touch. Every barber I've been to has been attentive and asked me about what I was looking for, but Rolin took it a step further. As soon as I walked in and told the front desk my name he looked over and had an idea of what I was going for. He knew that I was trying to blend my undercut with something that'd be more acceptable in a corporate setting and all he needed to say was "I got this". The man knows what he's doing, has a great rapport with his clients and I'll definitely be going back to him. The only thing I really should add is that he's going to give you a great cut, so give him the time you reserve. His schedule is usually packed so showing up late just delays everyone else. I've been here a few times and liked Oliver's work, but the attitude and lack of knowledge by the staff is what made today's experience extremely unsatisfying. I wasn't able to see Oliver last time so I booked an appointment with someone else who told me that I needed to book an hour appointment for a neck and beard trim. So this time around I did and with Oliver. Upon my arrival the receptionist tries to escort me to a washing station and I explained that I didn't require a wash because I only needed a neck and beard trim. After 5 minutes of discussing this with Oliver she returns to give me this nasty attitude and says that that's not a service they provide and I didn't need to book him for an hour. I explain that last time the other stylist, who I pointed out, said it was required. Another stylist standing there agrees and says he remembers that conversation, and me. She continues with her attitude, but says they'll do it this time and then escorts me to Oliver's station. After he finishes with my beard he's acting like it's all done and I asked what about my neck? He says well she didn't understand what you were saying and the stylist next to us asks if I booked an hour and I replied I did because I needed my neck cleaned up and was told to do so. The stylist tells Oliver that I booked it properly. After 5 minutes my neck is cleaned and he proceeds to charge me $50 for the neck cleanup, which again took 5 minutes, in addition to my $35 beard trim. I am looking at him in disbelief and then he motions for the nasty receptionist to return who tells me that I booked him for an hour and that's why I was being charged that amount. So now I'm confused if I am paying for the time or for a service that they claim not to provide and weren't ready to provide after telling me they would. Bottom line is there are a lot of places in NYC that provide these services with less attitude and with more competent staff. read more

Kim is fantastic. She greats you at the door with a smile. Her eyebrows are amazing. She takes your coat and offers you a beverage. I very much appreciate all she did. Kiva is fantastic. I never had such a good shampoo massage as Kiva gave. Her fingers are like magic. Rolin is Fantastic. He knows his way around a scissors. I recommend him to everyone I know. If you want to look like a model, you should have your haircut by Rolin. Ryon is also great. I found Marcus by using Yelo, and I'm glad I did! He was great and definitely made me feel pampered. The first time, I made an appointment for just a haircut, but he suggested I also try a beard trim, and thankfully, he had an extra half hour before the next appointment to do it. My beard never felt better! The second time I've visited Marcus, he was running a special on the Gentleman's Shave, so I received that service in addition to my haircut and beard trim. It was great! Relaxing, thorough, and so many steps that I lost count. All I know is that in the end my face never felt so good, and it was well worth it. I let him know the general style I was shooting for early on and he's taken over since then (and has never disappointed). The other guys do an awesome job as well as everyone walks out of there with a great haircut. From waiting in the sitting area to the hot towel at the end, this place is a thoughtful barbershop experience through and through. What I've learned is your regular corner barbershop will make your hair look great the day of, but after it is washed you'll realize all the uneven ends and find it hard to maintain every morning. I got a really great cut here yesterday...hair was exactly what I asked for and then some! Marcus is clearly very talented at what he does. I'm not big into chitchat, especially when I am trying someone new. Marcus seemed to get that and didn't push too hard to make awkward conversation. The staff was really friendly and accommodating BUT the female stylist seemed somewhat unkempt and outdated. I will raise a question about price. I am accustomed to paying +65 for a haircut, every 4-6 weeks for a long time. Marcus is clearly very skilled...and that's what you pay for BUT it was very cold in the studio (Dec snow day) and the space seem incomplete (hard to explain but makes sense in person). I didn't have very good experience with Marcus. At this price level you would expect the stylist to really understand what you are looking for (I showed him a picture). He seemed like he didn't care or he didn't really look at it. I'm writing this review a couple weeks later since usually the haircuts need some time to settle. He also could not manage his time well, the second half of the appointment was completely rushed. Behold, the power of Yelp! I was in desperate need of a cut, and I don't trust my hair to just anybody (I think at one point in time, we've all been SuperF**ked;) So - I fired up my Yelp app, happened to be in the right place at the right time - and found Marcus. Well, first I found his reviews. Then I found his website. And within a matter of minutes, I found myself in his chair. First - the salon is fan-tastic. I was greeted by the nicest folks, who immediately offered me a beer. I mean, really? Hi -I'm your new best friend. Second - before the cut even began, I received not only a hair-wash - but a full blown scalp massage. Almost fell asleep right there. Third - when I hit the chair, Marcus whipped out this massaging device and I received a massage of my upper back, neck, shoulders and arms - while his massage CHAIR took care of the lower back. HELLO! THE CUT - I mean, that's really what it's all about right?? AWESOME. The reviews are true. Marcus is talented. He's attentive, listens to what you want, and has tremendous skill.
