The easy thing to do would have been to replace the outside unit, that's what the Carrier tech support was telling him to do. My 15 year-old home A/C unit stopped working and I called the original installer to see if it could be fixed. They were very nice but recommended I replace the unit, which had a significant freon leak, because of the age of the unit. Quotes for a new unit ranged from $7K to over $13K. I decided to get a few quotes to ensure I was getting the best price. I called Fleming Brothers in Cooper City, FL. Upon speaking with their knowlegeable call- taker, I was asked if the installer I first called tried to repair the unit. I said they did not. She advised me that many times companies will jump right to replacing older units, rather than making a simple fix. I advised I did not want to pay a number of service charges, only to receive the same information. She said she would send the owner out to quote me a new unit, but also to see if the unit could be repaired for me, at no cost. Wouldn't you know it, Doug Fleming came out and said it could easily be repaired. He cut out some bad copper tubing and soldered a few areas for me. He took his time and explained what he was doing and answered all of my questions and concerns. GET AN ESTIMATE UPFRONT TO AVOID STICKER SHOCK The technician arrived on time the day after I requested service and fixed the issue in under an hour. The technician, Tristan, was friendly. The technician did not provide me an estimate of the repair before completing the repair. The bill was *shockingly* high and the technician demanded payment on the spot. The technician called the business owner who was kind enough to derisively mansplain the principles of inventory management and small business finance in order to justify his fees. I asked for a break on either the materials (which were marked up 600% above retail price) or the service call fee, but he would not accommodate my request. So...I recommend that you get an estimate before work is started. They told me it's not possible to do that, but, um... it is. C'mon. read more

I'm not sure how to rate them. But I'm not in love. I called them around 9:00 am today, a Saturday. The Tech said he'd be there in a "couple hours." He showed up, I believe, between 3-4 hours later. But in his defense, it WAS short notice, and on the weekend. So, no big deal, one might say. Now, I don't know how much an ac contractor normally marks up his parts to sell a customer on a repair call. But the Tech wanted $65 for a capacitor that sells on the internet for between $15 and $20. I took umbrage at this, but for all I know, it's industry standard. The Tech had all sorts of very shaky arguments to support the high price -- like, he has to pay tax for the part, and if he hadn't happened to have the (standard) part in his truck, it would take hundreds of dollars of his time to drive back and forth obtaining it. I was unsatisfied with these explanations about less than $3 in tax and how long it would take if he had come unprepared, lacking very standard part, which of course, he should, and did indeed, have in hand in any case. Ridiculous. Please understand, I don't expect to get the best parts price from an ac contractor. But I do not expect to pay between over 300-400 percent of the internet price. They are already charging a $130 service fee (to which, I explained to him, I had no objection). My only concern is this: I don't want to be unfair. People read these things. And if it is NORMAL for a contractor to charge this kind of markup, it would be unfair for me to single out this guy in this review. So, take all this for what it's worth. I'll add that the Tech, for his part, certainly was genuinely unhappy, but his arguments all sounded silly to me, like he was making them up as we went along, unfiltered, lol. Btw, we would up with me paying about double the Amazon price for the part. And it was exhausting getting to that point with him, lol. As I said, take this for what it's worth. He did show up on a Saturday on short notice, and the ac certainly works now. But this certainly wasn't the love fest I see described in other reviews. P.S. Fleming Brothers was able to send a technician the same day I called them. Tristan did an amazing job, the unit is located in the attic and it gets hot up there, but he fixed the problem in no time and made it seem easy! He also took the time to explain what was wrong and was very professional. They saved my brother a whole lot of money by fixing his a/c unit after other companies had said it needed to be replaced. Then I started calling them and they've done a great job for me. My a/c units are in my attic and difficult to work on. They were both nearing thirty years old and finally the time had come to replace them. Anyone that lives in Century Village should use this company. They are in the development so often that there is no question; they know what they are doing. I used their service last year when the neighbor above us used another company to blow out her a/c unit. If you live in CV, you will see a little pipe above the tub in the bathroom. Well, water started to leak from that pipe onto our tub. I thought for sure the woman above us had an overflowing tub. Luckily, that was not the case. Fleming Brothers Services is the best HVAC company around, and they're local to Cooper City and the surrounding areas. We've had them to our house several times over the past two and a half years to service a 12 year old AC unit. Dave the owner is the nicest guy and they always make time to stop by for a last second appointment, because when your air stops cooling in South Florida in the summer, it's an EMERGENCY. They had to come out a few times for one problem with our thermostat communicating with our handler, and Dave would not take any payment until he had the problem fixed and then even told us to wait a week or two to make sure it really was resolved. The biggest thing was that they DID NOT charge us for each visit. They do the best work and operate with complete honesty and integrity, so that when we decided to get a new AC unit this past summer, we only got quotes from Fleming Brothers. Made an appointment. Doug came on time, Serviced my AC, added Freon and charged a reasonable rate. I was using one of the larger companies before for service but they sent techs that don't know what they're doing. Doug showed me that it was missing Freon because something wasn't tightened up correctly from the previous visit from the other company. I'll be using Fleming brothers from now on. Awesome service! Very responsive, very polite and most importantly extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We've had issues with our AC over the last few months and several different companies have come out and did quick fixes. Just recently our AC stopped working yet again and we were finally getting ready to replace it. When David came out to assess he noticed the outside coils have been covered with dust (seems like an obvious thing which no one noticed before) and the part that was recently replaced was installed incorrectly.
