I am a fan of coffee shops. I find peace in sitting in a shop, the smell of beans roasting, the sounds of an espresso machine spitting steaming hot water, and frothing milk for a latte. The clank and clatter of stainless steel is so remarkable a sound for coffee shop. Flexit Cafe and Bakery is a great little shop. The coffee is good. Serving Coffee By Design, they have my vote. CBD is a local roaster in Portland, Maine. They have good coffee, and it is good to see Flexit serve this. While there recently, I ordered my good old standard, a dark roast, and it was deep, complex, and tasty; not watered down. On another day, I ordered their Gothic Chai, which is Espresso, Chai, and Mocha. It was a little sweet for me--I drink my coffee black normally and am not a huge sweet fan--but I would prefer this after a day out swimming in the ocean with a deep chill running through my body. Or a long drenched rainy day, where water cascades on the panes of the windows, this would be magical. Their baked goods are spot on. If they have elephant ears, I recommend them. Oh so delicious, these are my go to. The space is used well. They have comfortable couches, high top tables, low corners, and nooks to choose from. A great place for friendly conversation, a first date, or just to read and write. This is a comfortable location. Staff is friendly and quick with your order. Nice place. Friendly staff. Good coffee. The breakfast burritos were delicious! Even my picky sis-in-law though her egg & cheese bagel was good. Really liked the pumpkin cranberry muffin. This cafe has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Super friendly and attentive staff. The food is excellent, and if you are interested in good coffee and maybe a pastry to go along, this is the place. The wood floors and friendly staff create a cozy spot. This place is certainly worth a stop over if you are looking for a good breakfast and don't mind dropping the table service. The atmosphere here is casual, the food is good and coffee is great! There's refinery some open space for small groups and even a couple of board games for your amusement. I ordered the breakfast burrito and was super happy with it, lots of flavor and much more than your standard cheese and egg stuffed tortilla! If your looking for some shopping some nice but very expensive stores share this building if you're looking to window (or actual) shop. Well worth a stop, especially if you don't want to deal with the todo of a normal sit down place. If you stop in don't forget to try one of their coffees, the flavoring is perfectly balanced in the iced coffee drinks. read more

Sigh... so much potential... I really hoped to like this place. I love little cafes and bakeries, but as a baker myself, I can't say the quality is anything special, especially compared to the prices. They also charge easily a dollar or more extra than most places for the exact same items, which is ridiculous when you're talking about teas and bottled beverages. Im a foodie and willing to pay for quality, but this was found wanting. Lastly, I was given lots of attitude when I didn't tip on a $6 order that I had to get myself anyway. The attitude only continued when I chose to not purchase (and put back in the cooler) a can of cider that cost $3+. read more

I have been a long time customer of this wonderful little cafe. Since covid hit my requirements for dining (takeout or outside dining) have the additional requirement that I feel safe. Flexit is not only continuing to provide wonderful food but I was incredibly impressed with the lengths they have gone to to make the restaurant covid compliant to the max. First thing when you walk in there is signage indicating a mask required. If you don't have one you can purchase for a dollar. There is a hand sanitizer station at the door, before the counter, at the counter. While waiting for my to go order, I noticed that the employees behind the counter wiped down the counter and the touch screens between each customer. Friendly, well trained staff. My lunch, as always, was delicious. read more

It's a nice place to walk in to with great wood floors and a well lit space, but the coffee -- Double Dark (which promises to be rich) tastes like burned Starbucks. The lemon blueberry scone -- also a promising enticement -- lacked flavor. The main counter person was friendly, but her help behaved as though pouring the coffee was a major task, and served it as such. Not a good first morning experience. read more

I visited during the summer of 2015 and forgot to finish this review, so this reflects what I experienced then. I really liked the funky cafe vibe. I felt like I was in Cambridge, Mass or Madison, WI, where college students and cafes abound. In fact a girl sitting next to me was studying intensely, but unfortunately the wifi wasn't working. The food choices matched the funky vibe - healthy salads and sandwiches, interesting snacks, a variety of drinks. My quinoa fennel salad was healthy but it was really bland. I'll have to return to try more items on the menu to fairly evaluate the food. The many seating options made it feel welcoming and homey. While I would't eat lunch sitting on a couch, I'd happily drink coffee and study if I had to. read more

Food was good but it was SOOO expensive! We only got a breakfast burrito, a sandwich and one water bottle and it was $20. The food didn't even come with chips or anything. Had the breakfast sandwich with ham on a croissant. It was great. Every ingredient tasted of quality. The eggs they use are local and free range so they have great flavor and bright yellow yolks. The ham was not greasy or fatty AND not too salty. The cheese was not a plastic square of processed cheese instead it was real cheese that became creamy and gooey when it was warmed up. The croissant was made in house and was nice and flakey. My husband had the breakfast burrito which was also good according to him. We both had coffee which we enjoyed. The space is large but still has a cozy feel. I can imagine sitting in there and working on a project or reading. Since we are currently in the area we will definitely be back. read more

Fantastic. Absolutely FANTASTIC. My fiancé and I were looking for a quick coffee place (we prefer to stop at locally owned and operated when possible to support local owners) a quick google and we decided to stop here. I wasn't sure what to pick to eat but the description of Bahn Mi jumped off the menu (I had heard of it but never have had it) fiancé had Bacon Egg and Cheese on a bagel. Both were AMAZING. We sat outside with our 1yr Golden and the food and coffee were delivered quickly. So amazing. Such a quick but perfect meal. I could continue to just repeating myself. Flexit is one of my favorite places to pick up breakfast. I adore their iced coffee and the Bobbi Lane burrito is a great start to the day. However, for a place that is so vegetarian friendly, they really need to pay more attention to what their customers are ordering. My husband and I have visited once every couple of weeks for the past year or so and 4 times we have gotten the wrong food. We are vegetarian and are always VERY clear that we do not want meat on our breakfast sandwiches. Yet, four times we have gotten sandwiches that have either bacon or sausage on them. The worst was the time my husband decided to try something new and get veggie sausage on his egg and cheese. Not having had it before, he didn't know what size or shape it would be. He took one bite into his sandwich and realized that it was *actual sausage*. Thankfully, he realized it before swallowing and we were dining in, so it was able to be remade (with very little apology, actually). Today, husband was in Ellsworth for errands and decided to pick up a late breakfast for us. The last 5 or 6 times we have had no problems, so he forgot to check the sandwich when he got the bag and the person handing it to him said it was egg and cheese when he took the bag. He drove all the way home to Bucksport, unwrapped his sandwich and it was covered in bacon. Rather than tossing it, he is driving all the way back to Ellsworth to get the correct sandwich. To say that he is unhappy about this would be putting it mildly. Moral of the story - go to Flexit, get an insanely delicious blueberry pastry and a coffee and if you decide to order food that has to be assembled in their kitchen, make sure you double check and ask questions if you are at all unsure about what is in/on your food. read more

Have been here twice now, and will continue to recommend it. All the pastries I've tried have been top notch. I got the bacon and leek quiche yesterday and the crust was so flaky and buttery, and the flavor was so good. The texture was fluffy and rich. The coffee is delicious too, and quite inexpensive considering the quality. It's cheaper than Dunkin Donuts. The menu selection is amazing, and I love trying new things and whatever I'm in the mood for, from exotic options to comfort food. Not a deep-fried seafood, burgers or pizza kind of place, but other than that, they have something for everyone.
