I've changed my mind! After coming here several more times and having lovely interactions with the employees, I'm willing to admit I was harsh on the initial review. The employees are incredibly knowledgeable with the supplement aisle and have helped me find everything I'm looking for. The take away food is really delicious! I tried a roast beef sandwich with horseradish mayo that seriously hit the spot. It's a very calming environment and I do enjoy coming here. surprisingly wide-ranging stock for such a diminutive store. great range of vitamin brands, particularly solgar, which is harder to find nowadays [that is, in 'real life' as opposed to online]. fine selection of maine-made stuff, from badger balm to jams & fruit spreads, the latter being what i sought. i alighted upon rhubarb strawberry, by 'out on a limb', & it is very tasty & not too sweet (unlike most american jams / spreads). woudl love if they stocked conserve (which usually) does not contain pectin. maine root root beer which is delectable. they also have blueberry soda which i plan to try next. good source for tinder hearth breads two days a week, wine sections looks remarkably complete, again, for a modest-sized store. helpful, knowledgeable staff. read more

we spent about $150 on the tiniest bag of groceries you ever did see. brought home two chicken legs to cook for dinner and just threw them out. it smelled disgustingly foul and the smell of the rotting chicken was so severe it permeated our two story home we are in. this is the problem with these frozen meats. you don't know until it's too late. everything had about a 20-25% markup, even basic items. very disappointed. read more

We're staying with friends in Deer Isle and stopped by simply looking for coffee and a snack but found far more; e.g., their wonderful fresh-baked scones. A very good store for products from Maine. Prices are almost fair, considering the top quality of the wares. The store culture is a big downer. Despite intelligent and kind people like Richard, Daylene, Bill, Billy, and a few others, the culture is negative. Management is lousy. Morale is poor. There's no hospitality here, or focus on sincerely customer service. It's a Top-down problem: the owner is a mean person. A very upset, angry, lost person. A cruel, sick person. What a cute little market! I forgot my iron supplement, went to Hannaford supermarket hoping they would have it. Unfortunately they iron offered there wasn't plant based. The lovely pharmacist suggested John Edwards Market. I drove there and was pleasantly surprised they had a huge array of natural supplements! ERMAHGERD I almost died when we came in here last week. My husband wanted to check out the wine selection but I kind of pooh-poohed him, thinking they wouldn't have anything good. How wrong I was! They have an incredible selection of California wines, including many that we know well (David Bruce, Rombauer, etc). There are also many offerings from around the world. So glad to see this all here in Ellsworth! The rest of the store is great as well. They have a nice variety of cheeses and smoked fish in a rotating case near the checkout counter. Interesting store that appeals to foodies - locally grown/produced, organic, but also to specialty buyers such as gluten free and vegan. In addition they sell wine, coffee, and vitamins. They also have baked goods and cheeses from local purveyors. Hopefully, your pockets are deep as your dollars will not go very far. read more

I come here primarily for their bulk spices, which are amazing, and are very reasonably priced. You can bring in glass/plastic containers and they will fill them while they weigh if you want to cut down on waste. They have a great variety of familiar spices as well as some exotic spices if you want to change up your menu. This is an interesting place. Not sure it is as fab as the rooster shop a few blocks away, though. OK, yes, they have an amazing wine selection and the people who source the wine know what they are doing. On the other hand, how many people come to Ellsworth looking for a '73 Phelps Insignia or an 82 Batard Montrachet. Seems a bit incongruous to me. They have a plethora of all kinda vitamins and good-for-you gluten yada-yada, but it seems to me like a place either searching for an identity or trying desperately to stay in business. Staff kinda grumpy. If you need Miso soup base or powdered rhino horn, this may be your place. Otherwise it is uninspiring. read more

Incredible wine selection for everyone's pallet! This place has all the common favorites but what I really love about it is that I always find a hidden gem that blows me away and makes me come back for more. My recent obsession that I found here is a Sauvignon Blanc called The Oyster Wine. I love California wines so I was pleased when I saw that the grapes are a vineyard just north of Napa, and even more amazing is that it is VEGAN. I know I was like whatttttttt. Anyway, I picked up a few bottles to bring to my friends party (the bottles are too die for with actual oyster shells attached) and the wine was such a hit! It is just so clean it goes with everything, with a perfect balance of fruit and acidity and there is such an amazing cause behind it. Drinking with a meaningful purpose? Bought some lentils because they were on sale. When I got home I saw they were full of bugs. Gross. The people who work here are generally cold and unfriendly. No one seems happy. John Edwards is a whole foods market that has been in Ellsworth for decades. Large selection of high quality organic produce and dry goods, comparable to Blue Hill Co-Op and Belfast Co-Op, but run more efficiently. Nice wine and coffee beans selection, wine and beer making supplies also, lots of herbal medicines. A few tables for eat-in. Staff is friendly. No wifi. Good stuff, if you're willing to pay more for it. (Some of what's here you can get at Hannafords and other supermarkets in the area, for 20% less money.) Local stores like this deserve local support, and John Edwards has earned it over the years. read more

Im quite certain John Edwards Market is what dreams are made of. I could have spent hours (and I mean HOURS) in this incredible market - discovering new products, wellness regimens, and recipes if not for a hungry pup at home. There were so many incredible food products I had never seen, so much local (local beans!) and the best bulk selection I have ever seen. This store nourishes me. There's not much more I could ask for, really. They often serve a couple of kinds of soup around lunch time in the back of the store; always hearty, tasty and healthy. Produce is beautiful, often local, organic. Pastries are good. Whether I'm looking for something for lunch or ingredients for good cooking, this place has what I need.....which is a great thing in Ellsworth. I love that they have a nice healthy selection of frozen meats/sausage and also dairy (great variety of cheeses) with some local choices. I haven't even mentioned their very complete vitamin and supplement section, and you can get most spices you can think of bulk in the back of the store.
