CATS is the city bus system for Cedar City. It's alright, if unsurprisingly limited given the small…read moresize of the city. There's basically just one route and it kind of wends all over town confusingly in a loop. The map online doesn't really make clear what direction it's supposed to be going in at some spots, you kinda have to ride it once for most of its length to get how it works. I think the idea with it is you're supposed to memorize the route and know when to walk two or three blocks over to catch it going in the right direction. If you get the wrong direction you could be on there for 30-40 minutes having a nice scenic ride! The other odd thing about it is that every stop has a number, and you're supposed to know the number and tell the driver when you board. There's no stop button or chain to pull or whatever. And the drivers get hella grumbly if you want to change your stop mid-route. Did buses work like this back in the 1950s or something? I've rode buses literally all over the country since the 90s and I've never seen any other system that works like this. Good to have at least something viable though, cities of this size sometimes have nothing at all. Can't really complain about the fare at $1.50 a ride either, though St. George has better service and is cheaper. So I guess I did complain about it. Welp.

Later, I encountered one of the previously mentioned shuttles with Utah license plate T32 1ZD driving aggressively. The driver came up behind me at a high rate of speed and began tailgating me. Unfortunately, the same shuttle continued following me toward Zion National Park. When it was safe to do so, I pulled over and allowed the shuttle to pass. The driver then accelerated away well above what I would consider a safe speed for the area and tailgated other vehicle. Speed limits exist for a reason, especially in and around a national park where there are winding roads, pedestrians, bicyclists, and wildlife. Driving 10+ mph over the speed limit and tailgating other vehicles creates an unnecessary safety risk for everyone on the road. I hope management addresses this behavior and reinforces safe driving practices with its drivers.

Stop 2 is Old Bryce Town, a rustic touristy outdoor mall with horses, photo ops, and a cool rock shop.
