You need a code to get in, but I'm not going to make it that easy for you; you'll have to do some research. Once you are inside, you will have fun drinks with your closest new friends. I had "I'm in Love with a Cocoa"- a drink with Cocoa Puffs and it is dangerous because it is so good. You also need to try a Jell-O shot because why not. I'm sure this place is cool but you have to get a password from a different speakeasy (Firehouse) before you can get in. I saw/recognized the sign and the line out front, and decided to give it a try, not knowing that I had to know a password (the other speakeasys I've been to are not password based -- you have to have a rezzie or just know where it is). I waited in line for half an hour only to be turned away. I got a bit heated because in all my years in Austin (aka my entire life) I've never been turned away somewhere for something other than being underage. It was so silly and dumb to have waited in line for a speakeasy (not a club where you have to be young and/or hot and/or female to get in) in Austin only to be told you couldn't go in. Austin isn't perfect, but part of its charm is that we're supposedly chill and inclusive, at least where alcohol is concerned. This double layer of exclusivity really rubbed me the wrong way. Like, tell people before they wait in line forever that you have to know a password. Or don't have a line in front and a giant neon sign. It was very much a buzzkill and I went home after that feeling pretty pissed. I'm sure some of this can be attributed to naivety and just being out of the loop, but I just wish I had known before waiting that long. If you're looking for a real Austin experience (e.g. being able to get a drink at a cool place without needing to know extra information), go somewhere else. read more

The Handle Bar was closed but we were able to get in the secret bar after talking to a bartender outside. We're on our honeymoon so that definitely gave us an edge in :) we were there pretty early in the evening and were the only folks there for the majority of our visit! I really can't help but think that the horrible skew for this bar is because of the reviews that either a) people are trying to be funny and give 1 star reviews in a wrongly placed ode to the name or b) people are getting denied entry because they don't have the passcode. I came in on a Thursday night with my friend, who was able to get the code from one of her coworkers (she works in the service industry in downtown Austin). Once we obtained the code and walked in, we found a dark bar with an almost murder/horror movie theme. It's kind of creepy, but I think that adds to the whole speakeasy idea and feel. The swings were taken, but we were able to grab a table by the door. Their cocktail menu is one of the more inventive ones I've ever seen. I ended up getting the "I'm In Love With A Cocoa", which is essentially a grown up Cocoa Puffs. It's banana cognac with chocolate milk and a side of Cocoa Puffs. Initially, I was confused on how to enjoy the drink. Do I pour the milk over the cereal? Do I take a sip of each? Do I take it like a shot one at a time? Eventually I decided treating it like you would a normal bowl of cereal and that pouring the milk over everything was the best route. The flavor was incredible, and you could tell this drink was well thought out. I had a similar drink after visiting here in Cincinnati and I found out that it's very easy to mess up this type of cocktail. I was really impressed with the atmosphere and menu of this bar. This lounge was meant to be a type of oasis for service industry professionals, thus creating the difficulty in getting the password. People can complain all they want, but Floppy/Red Headed is unapologetically exclusive. That's their right, but if you're able to get in, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. read more

It's a really cool concept and I've never been to a speakeasy before. Its very small inside and has a couple of booths lining the walls. The bar was lined with seats and it was completely full when I got inside. That made it hard to order drinks - but the bouncer was inside and saw that me and my friends had a hard time ordering drinks. He helped me get drinks by directing me to the best spot to get the bartender's attention and was so nice about it which made the experience really nice :) I ordered the "I'm in love with the cocoa" drink which was unique. I liked having the contrast of the crispy Cocoa Puffs and milky drink! Overall, I feel like I'm giving 5 stars since the bouncer was really nice, but would give 4 stars for the experience (since it's really crowded) Check it out if you're in the area if you can get the code. Went last night and will be the last time that I go. Extremely rude and unfair person that was at the door letting people in. First he let in half the group that I was without the code, then told the other half we had to go find the code, which was fine. We had waiting in line about half an hour, I sent a text to get the code, got it less than five minutes after he asked me to get it. So we did what he asked and then he made us go to the back of the line to wait again instead of just taking us where we were. Floppy has three swings which are pretty cool if you're fortunate enough to be able to enjoy them (good luck)and good cereal cocktails, but not worth the poor, rude and just unfair treatment at the door. Too much competition in Austin for a great venue with great cocktails and even more to offer with live music and a fun atmosphere , that there is no need to deal with the rude and stuck up door staff. Floppy seems to have forgotten that customer service is what keeps people coming back. Too much competition everywhere for similar quality, especially at the high prices that floppy charges per cocktail. For $15/cocktail average customers deserve better service than that. My wife and I have heard of this place from friends. We went there and barely got in with "code needed". Once we were inside, my wife ordered her drink and for me, Whisle pig double and neat. The bartender, who was told to be manager, served the drink and asked for payment. I came behind wife and asked him to produce bottle to see it was Whisle pig whiskey (premium whiskey and also on the menu) he looked in 4 different trash cans and said "I don't have it". This place is a sham. They are taking advantage of the average customer but charging for premium cocktails and serving well. Speak easy... a phrase that never really meant anything to me. I heard it in conversation but never really paid much attention to it, until someone explained to me what it was during YSB and well.... I need to find one ASAP! Luckily, a resident and fellow Yelper from Austin, Leila, was there to help! On arrival, we parked and walked to something called... well The Floppy Disk Repair Shop. I laughed hard, not believing that one of these places would exist but then we stopped right at this location... with a keypad on the door, only then did I see the front. It's very sneaky in the way this speak easy is hidden, there is a bar literally right next to the door to this particular speak easy. So you would just see people walk into the other bar thinking that "Floppy Disk Repair" is actually a thing nowadays. I won't spoil the task of having to figure out the code to get in though. Once inside, this bar really thought out of the box. A two headed bear with one of its eyes hanging out of the socket is displayed high in the air, along with swings for bar stools on one side of the bar, a Leather Face painting behind a chain link fence. It's a very dark bar with the main color being red. We found a table with a giant Uno set and took a seat there. The drinks have really unique names and are different from the norm you find at other bars. I got "The Purple Drank" which came in a styrofoam with grapes as a garnish. The bartenders were on point as well. We ordered more drinks and played Uno and just enjoyed the scene. This was my favorite bar that I visited In Texas between San Antonio and Austin. If you're in to speak easys, this is a unique one to check out and enjoy. read more

I have tried this place twice now, and was not a fan either time. First of all, the wrokers at Handlebar are no help when you're asking for the code. A friend had never been, but badly wanted to check it out, so we asked the bartenders and the doorman at HB, and none claimed to have it. I don't buy that for a second. I'm also not about to flirt with the staff to get the code. We did end up making our way in, and I instantly remembered why this place is just awful. First, the ambiance is murdery, and not in a good way. Considering I listen to the murder podcasts daily, and have taken collegate courses called The Violent Sex Offender and Serial Killers, my threshold for the weird and disturbing is fairly high. This place just makes me uncomfortable. The decor is too much and everything about it feels out of place and like it's trying too hard. It doesn't feel like genuine thought went into this--instead they picked up a bunch of cheap toys and discount Halloween items to make everything seem creepy. Unfortunately, the bar is just creepy for all the wrong reasons. Red Headed Stepchild doesn't feel like I'm dabbling in the macabre--it feels like some bro is going to slip something in my drink and cart me away. Speaking of bros, the staff and clientele are no different than the HB and Dirty 6th crowd, which is understandable since they're selective to who they give the code to. The ratio of men to women has leaned heavily towards the male side both times I've been, once on a busy Friday evening and then once during the weekday. The bartenders also have that Austin-uptightness to them, which is made worse by the idea of working at an "exclusive bar". One bartender was sweet, but he was not the brightest crayon in the box, bless his angel heart. The other came over and forced small talk on us, even though it was clear none of the parties were into it. Overall, the atmosphere and murderino vibe fall completely flat. Now all of this might be forgiven if their drinks are amazing! Sadly, they're disgustingly sweet and poorly crafted. We tried their Jell-O shots just for kicks and that was a mistake. My friend ordered a cocktail, which was much too sweet, and I ordered a beer due to their limited spirit and beer selection. I understand space is an issue, but my friend noticed they had what is typically a "bottom-shelf" liquor bottle displayed with their "high end" products. Their cocktails range from milky and syrupy to your Austin basics, like flavored vodka with soda and tons of sugar. They are essentially the equivalent of cherry vodka sours in both taste and quality. I guess this place isn't bad if that's the atmosphere you're looking for: A small notch above dirty 6th. Read Headed Stepchild is not a place where quality and comfort are valued or where people can enjoy a thoughtful drink. It's just another bro-y arrogant scene bar with a superiority complex. If you're looking for great bars with killer products that are friendly and off the beaten path--they're out there and they're plenty. I'd prefer to continue to keep them part of Austin's best kept secret though. Ask the right (and friendly) people, and they'll show you the way. We stood around for 30 mins watching other people who showed up later get seated before us. No flash allowed in here, which felt pretentious. They go to all these efforts to seem secluded and unique but when you go in it feels like every other bar you've ever been to. I didn't really get it.
