Service has settled out and has improved. We dropped in when our primary choice was taken out by a freak storm which knocked out power to the west. I'm working on building my iron levels, so Florentino's got the nod. We were seated in a booth promptly when we arrived at around 5:15 pm. Within a minute, filled and iced water glasses arrived and then in another minute, a loaf of bread with butter. The bread had good texture, and worked well with the butter. We thought about the wine and my wife ordered their Veal Marsala, which worked with the Josh Cabernet that I wanted to order. Again corkage fees are quite reasonable. The salads came out - my wife enjoyed her wedge salad, and I enjoyed my Caesar (albiet still without anchovies!) with a solid dressing and crouton mix. As we finished the salads, the main courses arrived. My wife enjoyed her Veal Marsala, but couldn't finish it. I enjoyed my filet - it was better seasoned but still needed just a touch of salt to bring out the flavor. The room is still loud - they could use some baffles over head. The lighting has a variety of light fixtures from the ceiling. The bar still has 4 TV screens (which don't disrupt conversation at the tables and boothes. The seats are quite comfortable. Our server was Tom. We were seated and Tom started with our drinks, fresh warm bread, and we ordered the mozzarella tomato appetizer. It was delicious. Crispy garden salads with a wonderful Italian dressing came next. I ordered the eggplant Parmesan and my friend had the pork chops. My order was served piping hot with a mountain of cheese. I took half home. My friend had the pork chops which were huge and cooked perfectly. Definitely the only Italian restaurant in town, and you couldn't find a better one anywhere. What a sweet place. We are from out of town and family brought us here just before Christmas for dinner. Probably the thing I liked the best besides their amazing food was that it's small and intimate and you can actually sit at a table and visit without having to shout. That made the experience very memorable for me. Our server was delightful and kept our glasses filled. The entrees were hard to choose from, but I had the fettuccine Alfredo with broccoli and my boyfriend had the lasagna. Both meals were exquisite, and there was so much of it that we had another nice dinner the following night. I highly recommend going here and wish we had one near us as we have an anniversary coming up. read more

Five of us dined on Monday at DeKalb's new Italian charhouse, Florentino's on First St. and Lincoln Hwy. (former home to Keg and Kernel). The overall experience was a positive one, although they had no record of the reservation my husband had phoned in two days prior. Fortunately, one table that suited our party was available. A friend in our group required space for her walker. The server was polite, friendly, and attentive. He asked all the right questions and answered those that we had. Soups and salads came out first and got good reviews. The wedge and Caesar were fresh and on point for taste, and the French onion soup topped with the requisite crouton and gooey cheese earned two thumbs up. Delivery of our entrees was well-timed, always appreciated. They were also all correct, attractively-plated, and, according to five out of five of us, quite delicious. The steaks and lamb chops were cooked as requested, a great test of the kitchen staff. The only small flaw noted was that the veal Marsala was underseasoned. Otherwise, we had no complaints. Wine and cocktails offered sufficient pours, taste, and strength. Parking is available in the lot behind the building past the spaces reserved for building residents, and a back entrance shortens the walk. Two steps leading out might pose an issue for wheelchairs, however. Those of us who live in the area plan return trips and welcome having another source for fine dining close to home. Everything was below average Started with cream of broccoli soup, which I LOVE! but this was worse than a can of soup. It was somehow thick but not creamy at all. It also was luke warm. The Complimentary bread was the best thing we had. Side Salads were decent, with some red peppers & cucumbers in it. Spicy linguini scampi was way spicy & not very tasty. The shrimp were large maybe 5 or 6. Lasagna was ok Combo Trio was good- breaded shrimp, steak medallions, salmon was very bland. Fettuccine Alfredo was ok Crab stuffed shrimp were also ok Side of garlic mashed was a good portion but was dry looking, seemed microwaved Chocolate cake was also store bought. Went here on a busy Friday night. I wasn't expecting a whole lot from a steakhouse in Dekalb but it was still just...meh. Over 2 hours to eat was a little much. Ordered wings which were fine. My daughter and I each got a steak. She got the NY Strip and I got the 8oz Wagyu. Mine was cold to the touch and tough. Virtually zero seasoning. Baked potato was also cold. The pasta with shrimp gave my boyfriend food poisoning. The waitress wasn't the nicest either. The ambiance was cute and fancy, but didn't match the food they brought out. We had a very nice meal and experience here tonight. We will definitely return. It was our first visit. The atmosphere was relaxing with subtle warm lighting and soft background music. There were multiple speakers so the sound did not have to be loud to project to all parts of dining area. This location is made for intimate conversation (the kind where you don't have to yell over the table). Our server was attentive but not to the point of disruption. She was very professional and enjoyable. The portion sizes and quality (excellent) balance the cost. There were two of us and we spent $125.00 including tip and we took home enough for a couple of meals each. We had a steak meal and pork chops with deserts. This was a birthday outing so we went big. There were certainly a number of less expensive options. We went on a week night which might explain the dress of the clientele. (Appears almost anything goes) Parking is a little tight but manageable.
