The mangroves tour is a beautiful experience in Nature. Our guides were not great. Dylan and Bennie (maybe in training?) got the group in their boats and then sped away leaving us to struggle to keep up against the current. There was an older woman in the group who could not keep up and only after I expressed my concern about her did they double back and help her. No kayaking instruction, no nature instruction other than what not to touch under the mangroves. The guide played music and paddled away over and over at a rate that left the novice paddlers far behind. Consider checking skill levels of the group, stopping for regular check-ins, perhaps teaching about nature a bit? read more

This place has everything you need for fun and exploring the coastal waters of the Keys. We purchased a dry bag, water shoes, and a long sleeve water shirt for my husband to use while adventuring in and on the water. The staff (Anna and Thomas) were super helpful and friendly. The next day we returned for the 3+ hour Mangrove Tunnel kayak tour and absolutely loved the experience! Suri was our guide and helped us to understand the basics of kayaking. She was engaging, intelligent, and knowledgeable about the bay, reef, mangrove trees, fish, and other wildlife. We started in the bay and quickly made our way through water paths, and narrow tunnels of mangrove trees -- which was SO beautiful and peaceful. It was almost like being a kid again -- exploring secret passageways and I even got to jump into the water -- ocean water, which was so refreshing and wonderful. We had a great time and Suri even took photos of the whole group and airdropped them to us later so we had a memory of our time on the ocean and in the mangroves. We'll always remember this adventure as a highlight of our Florida Keys trip. If you're debating whether to do this or not...don't hesitate! We felt that our kids (13,19,25) would have loved it had they been with us. read more

Me and my family were able to swim in the water while on the kayak tour! Extremely fun experience to see and enjoy!!! Florida Bay Outfitters has a great location right next to the legendary Caribbean Club of the "Key Largo" film fame. It's small but loaded with near everything you'd want from an outfitter. Though I only stopped by to purchase a cap, they have all sorts of clothing plus all kinds of kayaks and paddleboats for sale or rental. Better yet, tours such as their Pennekamp State Park Kayak Eco-Tour where you can, in their words "Explore the magical walking trees and the seagrass beds in the protected Pennekamp State Park environment while searching for wildlife inhabitants." Since the ownership change, Florida Bay Outfitters has become so much more! I just love coming here! Not only can you rent kayaks and paddle boards, you can book a guided trip! You can, of course, purchase kayaks and boards here, too. And they have all the accompanying gear like paddles and seats and gloves and bungees and water bottles. Employees are friendly and knowledgeable and happy to make gear suggestions. Best of all, they have a HUGE clothing selection for Florida Keys climate. I love SPF long sleeve (performance) shirts for sun protection. They probably have 30+ different styles and prints. They have a ton of hats from ball caps to straw wide brim ones. They have endless better quality t-shirts. Oh, and they have sunglasses! I was just here for a chamber of commerce after hours and I was surprised how much Florida Bay Outfitters has expanded! I was once again at the Florida Bay outfitters this past weekend. I had recently went up on New Year's Day and purchased a new kayak they were so absolutely wonderful that I decided to give the kayak to my wife and I drove back up there from big pine key and purchased another one. Matt, Adrian, Eric and Bob the owner are just absolutely amazing! I had called a couple of times on Saturday and spoke with a young lady I did not get her name I believe it was Rebecca and she too was just outstanding. They have a amazing selection and if you're not sure you can actually get the kayak on the water and try it out. They also offer a large selection of rentals from small all the way up to the kayak sailing unit. The best customer service I truly believe I have ever had. I just got off the phone with Eric and purchased a new cover instead of me driving all the way back up there they're going to ship it to me with a very reasonable price. Purchased a Hobie Tandem Island from them out of their rental fleet. If you are interested in buying a hobie, put your dibs in May or April, they release them July or August when new fleet comes in. Had it back a couple of times over the years for repairs. They fix them relatively cheaply. Only problem that I had was they had a person put my kayak trailer together who was doing it using discovery warning. They have experienced people there but they didn't do qc of this new employee. It could have been a catastrophic failure if I didn't catch it on pick-up. There are a couple of good places to go from their launch, the most interesting are a couple of miles away to get to for a beach or mangrove canal. They can shuttle you to a ton of interesting locations. If you have any waffling from the front help ask for Frank, the owner. Sometimes the front personnel do not know the total answer. Overall, I would recommend this outfitter as an excellent location to purchase kayaking gear, take a paddle in the keys or purchase a kayak / SUP. read more

The store where you rent the equipment is really cute and the staff and in particular Elizabeth was amazing helping us by taking the equipment to and from the launch and telling us where to go on and off the water. Friendly staff, quality boats, super convenient. I had a day to spare on a work trip and wanted to check out a bit of the keys. This was an easy drive from Miami (1.5 hours or less) and totally worth it! The guy who helped me out was kind enough to NOT sell me on the bug spray when I asked - he said they wouldn't be out when I was going, and he was right. It was probably a $20 bottle of bug spray, haha. I did buy the $20 bottle of sun screen and thank goodness I did! I was out for around 3 hours total and that was perfect for me. I left from their shop, super easy. Next time I would ask to use the free shuttle as I'd like to get a little further in the mangroves and maybe further from some of the boat traffic. read more

Stopped by with my girlfriend on a day trip to the keys. We decided we wanted to kayak and a lot of places we tried were out of rentals for the day. The prices here are very good (we paid $20 /Hour or $45 for 1/2 day) and were treated well by the employees. We were given a map before we started our journey and asked where the best places to kayak to were. The man helping us said to go to the right and we could see a few things. However, all we saw were some nice houses and mangroves. I feel like there are so many good places to kayak in the keys that this acts as a last resort because of its location in a relatively residential area. Sure the water is beautiful and the houses are great to look at, but we didn't really get any "Florida keys" while we kayaked. Unless you're in a pinch or just want to get out on the water quickly and for a great deal, I'd say look around elsewhere. It's worth it to pay a little more and have some cool areas to kayak. read more

Simply put, this place is AWESOME! I don't usually go through the effort of writing a review, but everyone absolutely needs to know how great this place is. This shop is conveniently located in Key Largo, just a few minutes into the Keys. There is free parking in the shop's lot. You can choose to launch the kayak right behind the store or they will load you and the kayak, free of charge, onto a van and transport you to another location. They suggested we kayak in the mangroves of Garden Cove, and I'm glad we listened! They provided clear instructions and suggestions for our excursion, and even gave us a handy laminated map so we can find our way around easily. We rented a two-person (tandem) kayak with a clear bottom - it was really cool! The staff was exceptionally friendly from very beginning to end. Their prices are very reasonable and when compared to other places, Florida Bay Outfitters' service goes unmatched. They go beyond the expected. I have never encountered such wonderful service anywhere else. I kept thinking to myself "do I have to pay for this...?" but nope! All these great services were free of charge. They even have a shower for the customers to use after their excursions! Awesome. That was the best day ever. Without a doubt, I'm returning to Florida Bay Outfitters. read more

Florida Bay is an extremely friendly and highly competent kayak outfitter that was recommended by several friends who paddle in South Florida ... if for no other reason in that they allow kayakers to park in their lot and drop boats into Blackwater Sound out back. We went the rental route (they sell kayaks and equipment and offer guided excursions as well) and they hooked us up with everything we needed for an afternoon out on the sound, including skirts and floats and a map of the local waterways. The boats were solid and clean and they provided some good basic instructions before we shoved off. We'll definitely be heading back there again on our next trip to Key Largo. They also offer boat drops at other Key Largo locations free of charge. Just ask and they will likely accomodate. Located right next to the Caribbean Club, so grab a cold one and watch the sunset after you bring back your boat. read more

Let's just say, the rack my boyfriend had bought for his kayak had really never been seen by any of these men working here. We rented a car and drove down from Miami, looking to rent a kayak and sail the ocean. We met Rebeca, who seemed to be an owner, and she kindly explained that the adventure we anticipated, would actually turn into a battle to survive. It was very windy and the regional weather service posted warnings for small vessels. I definitely appreciated her honesty. She in turn recommended us to the nearby state park, where the water may be slightly calmer. She brought us to her office and together, we looked at the posted report of the water by the park. I booked a trip for me as a solo kayaker - new to ocean kayaking the day before. A lot of touring companies had cancelled their tours due to the wind and mildly rough seas (Tropical Storm Cindy related waves). I had Natalie as a guide and it was the funnest time. She could not have been more accommodating. And she was a great teacher, very patient, very knowledgeable about the ecology of the mangroves. We chose an intermediate course for a newbie: calm with mildly challenging stretches for water conditions. I had such a good time - I want to go back and check in because it feels like I made friends with the people that run the shop and tours. They were accommodating and well prepared. I learned so much - about kayaking as well as about the northern keys waterways and biology. Natalie even slathered sunscreen from her own stock on me when she and I noticed my legs were burning towards mid trip. A lovely time. Would go again and highly recommend it. read more
