I was never told this when I booked, and I cannot find this policy on their website. Their own patient form says an exam "may require dilation," not that it is mandatory. I finally agreed to a lighter dilation with reversal drops so I could drive comfortably afterward. Despite the exam already costing about $250, I was then told the reversal drops would cost extra. At that point, I left. I have no problem with a doctor recommending dilation. I have a problem with making it a condition of receiving a basic vision prescription without telling patients beforehand. Had I known, I would have booked elsewhere and saved myself a month-long wait and a wasted trip.

Dr. Frank Venzara, III is truly a gifted retina surgeon who gave me hope after multiple failed…read moresurgeries. I had gone through three unsuccessful retina surgeries with another doctor who told me I was part of a rare 4% with no treatment options. My retina was left in poor condition--a loose buckle, unremoved scar tissue, and not enough silicone oil to protect the eye. I was devastated. Then I found Dr. Venzara. He was thorough, kind, and honest. He immediately identified the problems and performed a complex surgery that lasted over 2.5 hours. Since that surgery in September, my retina has remained attached. I had a follow-up surgery in March to remove the oil, and there's been no scar tissue regrowth since. While the previous damage couldn't be undone, Dr. Venzara gave me the best possible outcome and peace of mind. I'm so grateful for his skill and integrity. I called to make an appointment as a new patient and they demanded that I get an referral frim my primary (I have an HMO). I explained that my plan does not require a referral or a primary. They didn't believe me. I had my primary send a referral but Ho's office never called me back to make an appointment. I called them after a few weeks to see what's up and they told me they have no record of receiving a referral and that I would need to have another referral sent. My primary was kind enough to send another referral and Ho's office called me the same day. The person on the phone made an appointment for the first available. The day before my appointment the office calls me and tells me that the referral had expired on the 1st. The first available appointment THEY gave me was on the 3rd. I said that the person that made my appointment must have seen the date that they claim was an expiration date. They said they know nothing about that. People! This is 2021! Their scheduling software surely documents the date the appointment was made and by whom! They had the nerve to ask me to request yet another referral from my primary. I refused! I mean come on; my primary knows that a referral is not even required by my insurance plan. I could go on & on about how the office manager calls me back that same day and offered to call my primary for another referral and a week goes by and I call back and the same office manager has no recollection of our previous conversation and asks me if I'm a new patient!!!!!!!!!!! Need I go on???????
