Professor Pires needs to be replaced. Nice school but horrible science teachers. Especially Stephen Pires, the worst Professor him and his TA Ronald Belance. Student's barely pass his class. the work is ridiculous and nobody hardly gets 10/10 most of his students have to repeat his class or fails. They do not care about you. It's like they want you to fail. O can screenshot my wassap chat of how students feel about this professor. Every semester he has students that fail, even if you ask for help he responds go watch the module video. The school needs to look into his failing rate of kids failing and repeating him every semester. Very had to get a A or B from him. The TA is more harsh of a grader than he is. the people here are racist to white people. i don't think latinos or white peoples who grew up around latinos like white people. no one uses their brain or has the right time of day. their ego is so big and ugly. i almost died by being stabbed in off campus housing. everyone who is a "native" or local to this "world or area" has an emotional problem. no one can think so they rely on "if something rhymes it must be right." and people misjudge my demeanor all the time almost every day here, thinking i was serious when i'm not, thinking i am full of anger when I'm relaxed, really weird stuff. it's 95 degrees and everyone is on edge, defensive, and has no edge to their humor. if you can't keep up with favors or being engaged attention wise you can forget any reliability on one contact here because they are unforgiving if you "wrong" them once. that's miami for you. they "know it" supposedly. i swear many other races are other-minded to white people. i have met so many people at different universities who were strangers since ever and it looked like they knew each other for semesters and years, them being latino... like little kids who go on playdates because they're the same size. latinos don't care about white peoples culture that makes up 130 countries across the globe they only care about causing a scene, traveling, and being latino together... collecting latinos for their tribe and excluding white people from their adventures. read more

This review is very specific to two programs. The first one gets 5+ stars. The Art and Art History program is the best in the state. If you are a serious student of the arts, you need to check out the academy. You'll get out of this program what you put into it. And, go for the BFA. You need to have your first show at the Frost Museum. These professors are awesome. Now for the program to avoid Avoid the Landscape Architecture program here at all costs. In fact, just avoid this phony profession. If you are about to apply in Jan, change it. Now, while you still have time. Let me give you 4 reasons. No jobs, licensure is not relevant (any landscaper can do there work), there is no thesis option (they are using a childish "case study analysis" baloney that no one is research has ever heard of, and the collaborative learning is a farce (you can not get your primary learning from other students who know nothing). If you look on Indeed, there has never been more than 5 entry level jobs posted. In fact, according to the professor Ms. Ebru only 3 out of 20 ish students graduating (many did not graduate on time) got jobs and the rest internships. Even though she told the class open and in public there were employers calling her begging for students. There is a huge disconnect between statements made and reality. Again, please go look for yourself. If you read the statutes closely for Landscape Architects, we do not engineering nor architecture work. I kept thinking its odd on the awards (by the way they are obsessed with awards instead of good work) pages how many subs did the real design work. By the way, they never once discussed how to design any layouts for landscapes. The professors (Mr. Gianno) can not stay on one topic during the semester. Are we urban planners or designing the landscape for streets? He has a difficult time focusing and choses to use big words to - I don't know - show off and cover up for his lack of education? And, you will never ever get a license in Florida unless you work exclusively for an RLA only and those jobs are limited in scope. If you are an older student - watch out - they always hired the younger ones before me. Just saying. The program states on it's literature that there are two options: project or thesis. Well, that's 100% false. There never was nor probably ever be an honest masters thesis. They just do some extra work for the semester and call it a project. That's a joke. So, many graduates use the words thesis and master project because that's what we are told in class but in fact that's 100% false. I asked the Ombudsman and I have the emails. Case study analysis is childish. That's a made up methodology that no one has ever heard of that the professors here can't explain either and gaslight you the student into thinking your the dumb one LOL. That emperor has no clothes. Collaborative Learning again childish teaching. As a student, you are paying for these professors to teach the class when in fact the opposite is true. You as a student do the "research" and prepare endless presentations to teach the class yourself. Especially the "studio" classes. The presentation skills from my class (MLA 2018) were horrible. The students never managed to learn how to do better presentations in the 3 years I was there. The just get up in class and rattle on and on. Here is the last point. If you are not comfortable with public speaking - watch out. The professors put you up there to humiliate you every presentation. I was told later that's a tradition in architecture schools. They have (in the past) stomped on students work models and engaged in name calling. That's NOT learning and it's abuse. Call it what it is people - abuse. You can't gaslight me buy saying that's "how you learn". How the school allows that is even more strange. I'll testify to those facts. If you are a past student of this program with big student loans, contact me. Many of the students in this program graduated with 100k + in debts. yea, most people even more than that. For a so called profession that has a place in our universities and been around for a 100 years, this is a farce. My suggestions is to get either an architecture or engineering degree + an art degree. But don't forget the architecture program is just as brutal. And, take some horticulture classes from UF. Not to be confused with the Flor Rida International Tour, which probably generated a lot of money, even on rainy nights when people went out to see "Flo Rida's On The Storm." An excellent University, although when there are events on campus (or the fair, which was there when I was here), traffic turns into an utter, free-for-all, gridlock nightmare for hours on end. They should do something about that. If I could give zero stars, I would, as FIU gave me big business, corporate greed vibes. Visitor parking for an event in one of FIU's rental ballrooms was a nightmare! It was my first time visiting FIU and it was raining so hard, I could barely see in front of me, let alone any parking signs. I am a teacher, and I'd sent out the FIU link (regarding parking at the Graham Center for ballroom rentals) to all of the parents in my class (as did other teachers) ahead of time. On their ballroom website, it directed Graham Center ballroom visitors to park in the gold garage, blue garage, or student parking lot 3. One week later, I received a $20.00 parking violation in the mail for parking in the gold garage. When I called about it, I was informed that it would've cost me only $2.00 (then $1.00?!) per hour to park in a metered space (where that is, I have no idea) for the 3 hours of the event, and I that could appeal the penalty fee, which I did. I offered to pay the amount I would have paid, rather than the $20.00 penalty fee, given that I would have paid the parking fee if I'd known about it. They asked me for the website link to the Graham Center Ballroom parking information, which I gave them, then denied my request, responding that the misinformation on the FIU official website, regarding parking in the gold garage, didn't matter since it was "from a different department" at FIU (What!), but they would waive the extra $5.00 10-day late fee, since I was appealing. When I looked up my case number, you guessed it, the $5.00 charge had already been applied (total: $25.00) during appeal. FIU's parking and "appeal" process is a complete scam, and it functions as a greedy big business corporation, not as an institution of education. I will request that the private school at which I work rent somewhere else for next year's graduation ceremony, because if it's at FIU, I will not be attending. read more

AVOID THIS SCHOOL AT ALL COSTS - I had some professors that were understanding and accommodating, but others seem to operate under the assumption that we don't have jobs or other classes. On top of that, it shamelessly advertises itself as a party school, and the campus would be littered with confetti. Personally, if I ran a school, I would be embarrassed to see that and I would soon throw myself in front of a bus before hanging pictures from the frat parties on the walls on the second floor of a building. That's not even the worst of it. At times when I'm passing through the tabling area, there would be people preaching harmful ideologies and scam artists asking for signatures and insulting/harassing people who refuse. read more

FIU needs to be much more clear in their advertising and course description of the Ed2Go teacher classes they are offering. They count for nothing. No, really; I'm not over exagerating. They count for nothing. They are not college courses and will not show up on your transcript. AND... they don't count as PD (Professional Development) towards your teacher certificate renewal. They should change key words to make sure it doesn't pop up on searches either. I contacted them once I realized this and they refused me a refund. I spent money and time on courses that counted for nothing, and now have to spend more money and time for real courses that count towards my professional teaching certificate. I am FIU alumni, and this was still their answer. Shameful. read more

I consider it treason to give my alma matter anything less than a five star rating. I graduated from FIU in 2013, and not once did I EVER regret my decision to attend this school. FIU has a problem. And the problem lies within the students who come here with a borderline INSANE obsession with the University of Miami. First: if you love UM, wanted to go to UM, couldn't get in/afford it---please do us a favor at FIU, and DO NOT come here. Go ANYWHERE but here. Your hateration is bringing the school down. Thank you :) Now back to my review. + I came to FIU because FIU kept coming to me. Literally. Being from up north, I didn't really know anything about the school. But on college tours, campus matching quizzes, random google searches...FIU kept popping up. I took it as a sign and applied. FIU then outdid itself when they offered me the most scholarship money out of all of the schools I had applied to. University of Miami was never on my radar, though with my GPA, I could have gotten in easily. However, I was on the Golden Panther fast track, and went onto become an FIU student in 2009 :) +I can honestly say that when I entered FIU, I didn't totally expect to be challenged in the way that I was academically. This is a good thing. No, you won't get by with barely reading the book. You'll have to study, and take notes. Additionally, I was a member of the Honors College, and it was seriously a great choice. For those looking to expand their reach in the community, both intellectually and professionally, I recommend looking into it. +FIU is a gorgeous, gorgeous school. I know that this has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the academics, but the university literally looks like a resort. It's unreal how beautiful it is. I loved walking around the BBC campus specifically to look at the water. So pretty! +I stayed on campus while I attended FIU, so I experienced "campus life" and all the hoopla you see in movies. Yes, dorms are clean. Yes, dorms are nice. No, you don't have to share a bathroom with the entire floor. There are always HELLA events going on campus, so there's never "nothing to do" --- and lord, there are SO many freebies! I came back to DC with endless goodies, and even last time I visited, I got some more free stuff, lol. + Development is a thing here, and it's for the better. There's currently SO MUCH money being pumped into making FIU amazing. I saw it starting up as I attended here, and every time I come back to visit, it's even more going on. I love it. FIU is a growing institution. I think it's totally unfair to compare FIU to other universities that have been around since the Jim Crow era! Seriously though. We are working our way up to greatness! The President is seriously committed to making FIU "World's Ahead", as it's constantly said. And let me just add this: for those who complain about the amount of Spanish spoken in a city that is MAJORITY Latino, please read a book. Don't complain about what you should have researched. FIU doesn't care about your future what so ever. I applied to the College of Business because I really wanted to study Finance and it was my passion to do so. They didn't allow me to pursue that passion because I withdrew from a pre requisite class twice. I gave them the reasons for which I withdrew which were under extenuating circumstances. I had to work 50 + hours a week and couldn't keep up with the workload so I had to withdraw, and they didn't seem to understand that. Now I was forced to leave home to pursue my dream at the University of Central Florida, which I love. I highly recommend a different university. read more

Florida International University is a bureaucratic nightmare. Whether you're a student or a staff person, be prepared to be put through incessant and demoralizing loops of paperwork and politics. ------------------- As a student: professors have been completely rigid when it comes to deadlines, despite legitimate issues that came up from working full-time or medical emergencies. I have had professors write statements such as "That is a valid reason, but unfortunately exam XYZ does not have a make-up and grades are final." C'est dommage. Stipulation says Y, so no wiggle room. If they're not completely rigid, they're almost obsolete. For my online classes, it seems as if the professors I've had are nothing more than an intermediary between 100 online students and a software program that teaches the class for the professor. Even in in-person classes, the professors often end-up having the students teach the class by assigning us weekly presentations. This is literally their job; you know, the one that they signed up for back in their first year of assistant professorship or, gasp, adjunct-hood. Look, I understand: you don't care about the education quality as much as the low-cost of the institution and the accreditation. That's fair, but also realize that the majority of the degrees offered by FIU--and by most colleges--do not have a job at the end of them. I'd say 80% of the degrees at FIU do not lead to profitable employment. Think all of your social sciences, arts, and so on. Study these on your own, but don't waste four years paying the inadequate professors and infuriating bureaucrats to teach them to you. The community at FIU is also non-existent. It is a commuter school. Period. Other students will ghost you after one or a few conversations. People will flee to their cars as soon as the lecture is over. People sitting alone in tables in the dining hall seems to be the norm not the exception. The only people that may actually be able to say they have a social life are the folks in fraternities, but their highlight is a party in a campus parking lot in the spring. A fucking PARKING LOT. Aside from them, perhaps the 3,000 students living on campus can say they have developed close friendships, but they are 3,000 of around 60,000 students. This isn't just complaining. Low community, low professor quality, and high bureaucracy means that half of our students do NOT graduate. They quit half-way. Two years of debt for no degree--whether social science or engineering--is not a good use of time or money. The only worthwhile use of FIU as a student is if you already have your steady bf/gf, you have a scholarship, you don't mind either working exceedingly hard for a social life or not having one, and you're majoring in a financially-worthwhile field, such as accounting (if you're going to get your CPA), nursing (if you'll become an RN or a nurse-practitioner), PA, Pre-Med (if you're absolutely sure you will go to med school), psychology (if you're absolutely sure you'll at least get a masters if not a PhD), pre-law (if you're absolutely sure you can get into a top law school), or any engineering. Otherwise, don't bother. Financially speaking, you're eons ahead if you go to trade school and become an electrician, plumber, welder, or another trade. If you do brace for an FIU education, major in a worthwhile subject you can do well and find your partner if you can. Either way, it's still going to be a depressing experience. Miami as a city isn't much better than FIU btw-- materialistic, status-driven, built for cars. I'd recommend moving to another state and university that is predominantly in dorms and where, again, people don't run for their cars as soon as they're dismissed. ------------------ As a staff person - forget it. I'm absolutely serious when I say this: it is absolutely impossible for staff to keep up with the work volume they are expected to complete. This school serves over 60,000 students. If that overwhelming amount of people wasn't overwhelming enough, each department has its own rules for classes, contract rules to pay staff, and regulations to amend issues that come up, such as a final make-up or re-registering for a class. This means that in order to resolve FIU bureaucratic issues, a staff person needs to complete research on the issue specific to the department, find out who the contact person is in that department, reach out to them, and hope that the process does not take more than 3 weeks. Oh, and this is while fielding stacking day-to-day requests and students asking for reasonable status updates that cannot hold in an unreasonably bureaucratic institution. From working at FIU, it seemed like the office staff turnover was a year or two. People quickly realize that for the work volume they are processing, they may as well transition to the private sector and earn 50% more in annual salary. I have taken classes in both Modesto Modique campus and North campus. The main campus is by far the nicest. I am surprised by the negative comments I have heard about this school. I transferred here from Miami Dade College a little over two years ago and am about to graduate this semester. I had a great overall experience in my time here. Perhaps, a couple of miscommunications with an advisor here and there, but nothing that could not be easily resolved. Every school has it's good and bad things and I am thankful for everything that I learned as a student here that has been preparing me for my future career. read more

It's the best public university that South Florida has. Yes, just like our amazing city is growing so rapidly that it's bursting at the seams so are the countless students that call themselves a Panther and receive a top notch education by attending here. It's the only public law school south of Central Florida which is geographically located in a city that is internationally populated thus creating that cultural experience hard to beat. There's frustrations that arise all the time is any University whether it's the cost, parking, lack of food, or even congestion but it's functional and it's fun so it works. A degree obtained here holds its weight and is recognized for its graduation rate. I'll never get over the parking nightmares but I'm proud to be a Panther. The online classes are offered in high amount so remote studying is attainable. Most importantly, it's the main university in the South Florida area so the weather is definitely always warm. My son tried to cancel his dorm with FIU because he has COVID and respiratory problems and they didn't want to cancel it at the beginning even though it is not safe for him to live there. Now they sent an email saying that they finally canceled the dorm but my son has to pay 2.000 dollars. I visited FIU on Saturday 2/2 for the Dessert Wats event. The event itself was amazing! Part of the reason the event flowed so well is because you had several FIU students and employees guarding the areas and organizing everything to move seamlessly. Starting from the parking garage being open for all attendees to checking baggage at check points made me feel very safe and secure. All of the staff was super friendly and professional. read more

My review is about my campus visit (not about being an enrolled student). This is one of the most beautiful campuses I have ever seen. However, do not visit on a weekend...THERE IS NO ONE ON CAMPUS. It was like a ghost town. It was very unwelcoming. We returned on a Monday for an official campus tour as my son had just been accepted, and while the tour guide did a fine job...NO ONE from admissions made any attempt to greet us and/or meet my son while he was on campus. Considering we had made the trek to Miami from CT, that seemed pretty lousy. read more

Why does this university have an overall 3 star rating? I don't think anyone expects an Ivy League education from FIU. It's a very affordable option with a strong international influence. I find that in this day in age, resisting globalization is futile. This school embraces and promotes the international arena and frequently holds conventions on global strategic issues. A new medical school? Yay! A flourishing law school that's less than 10 years old? It does, by the way, have the highest percent of Florida bar passing in the entire state, which is impressive when compared to it's neighbor and highly acclaimed University of Miami. The School of Education is also impressive and recognized. School spirit? It's hard to build a strong sense of pride for a school that currently educates over 40,000 and roughly a mere 14% live on campus. That means many students reside at home with their parents (as most Miami natives do) and most students DON'T come from other places. They are at FIU because it's affordable and their parents can afford the higher education that they've engraved into their kids minds! Because the vast majority of students are only on campus for classes, and not social activities, their energies and focus are not the athletic events, as with most state universities. There is also so much more to do in Miami that it's easy for students between the ages of 18-24 to do anything non-related to typical college life. I'll admit, sometimes I find that classes are too easy. This does concern me. But I'll also admit that over time, class quality has improved. There are also classes that are too hard for it's level. FIU, please find a balance between the two. The campus has grown tremendously over the last 10 years. Absolutely beautiful facilities, lots of dining options, large and well-equipped gym, and the campus is continuously improving. Construction for remodeling and new buildings is everywhere. Oh, and the Frost Museum is a wonderful addition to the artistic cultural development and awareness in South Florida. As a student, I can speak on behalf of the student body and am confident to say that the biggest issue remains with parking! FIU probably couldn't build enough garages for the amount of commuters. The garages are all being built so far away from the buildings where we have classes! Overall, I give FIU 4 stars. Why? Because this institution of higher learning has granted me and many other (not rich) students the opportunity to improve our lives and the lives of those around us. The local Miami community (by this I generally mean people living west of 95) can continue to improve with this affordable and improving state university. read more

Speaking from the point of view of a transfer student from another four year university, FIU is an unorganized, careless nightmare. The registrar has placed the same hold on my registration twice. I had to set up a second appointment with the people who didn't fix it the first time. They will give you the "Open Registration Dates" instead of the registration dates you are supposed to get. They will not count your transfer credits unless you physically go to your advisors office and show them on their own computer your credits which they received weeks ago. They will charge you a 35$ fee for a "Virtual Orientation" which consists of a few youtube videos they made. They will charge you at least 3 other fees just for the privilege of registering and then they will mess that up too. They will not abide by the online registration system and instead put up third party links where you have to fill out an application to register (Looking at you human anatomy) It's the most unorganized POS place I've ever seen But yes, the campus is pretty, parking sucks and the other students are fun. read more

FIU's Modesto Madique campus is far from my favorite place in the world. At almost 3 times the cost of a credit at Miami Dade College, and perhaps 4 times the cost of Browadd College, I definitely do not feel I am getting my money's worth at FIU in general. The campus is always incredibly busy as well, making it hard to focus on anything even in the library. There are always rallies, protests, events, loud music... It is a headache. I'm paying thousands of dollars a semester to go to SCHOOL, not to be stopped at every building corner by a parade, a man playing bongos and the crowd watching him, or pictures of dead baby fetuses and angry protestors. The Biscayne Bay campus has more to offer. Though incredibly far from my home in the SW, the BB campus is smaller, friendlier, actually has parking, and is right next to the beach. It is nowhere near as busy as the MM campus. I find it to be a much better learning experience. read more

I graduated FIU in 2001, back then we did not have a medical school, law school, professional architecture program, 4 large 4 story outdoor parking facilities, president and serority houses, 50 million dollar foot ball stadium, division 1 football team,large respected art gallery, I could go on and on. I drive by once in a while just to take a gander and to buy some FIU clothes. Back in my day you never saw anyone sporting FIU shirts or license plates, we were really just an academic institution with no traditional school spirit. But now you see people with FIU shirt's, license plates all over the tri-county area. This new healthy rich FIU school spirit can be attributed to the investment in schools infrastructure such as athletic programs, new colleges and programs,sorority institutions, modern boarding halls which are more like apartments for students etc. The campus is humongous and beautiful, you have people from all around the world at the campus, it is very multi-ethnic. The University also has aesthetically pleasing landscape design, you have areas where it feels like your sitting in heaven while rocking to and fro on one of the 4 seater seat swings. I tell all of the students I meet today that just a decade ago we did not have nearly half of what they have today and to appreciate it. We are also the only state public law and medical school in south florida. I LOVE FIU! I met some nice babes there to lol Not only that you are not going to find a south florida university with the credit hour price comparable to FIU except FAU . FAU is nice but is no where near the infrastructure and academic development scale as FIU. Last but not least the whole time I was a student at FIU I lived in broward county, because of the convenient location of FIU right off of the turnpike, by the time I entered the turnpike, I was on the FIU campuss in like 25 minutes. Lastly for real this time, when I was going to FIU we did not have any parking garages, we either had to park very far from any building or we all had to fight for grass parking with an even further walk. There is a reason why FIU is known by many as: Fuck It Up This campus seems to always mess something up. If its not regristration, its financial aid. If its not financial aid, its the bookstore. Everything and anything can go wrong here. And the killer of this campus is parking! OMG! Its like you have to go battle to death for a parking spot. I'm surprised to see so many people unhappy with this school, because I couldn't be more enamored with this university. Most people don't know what a bad education is until they have attended FAU. Yes, there are some departments to where people don't really know what they're doing but that's anywhere you go, regardless of the institution. But when you have one of the largest universities in the country located in our backyard, I find more pros than cons. First I need to discuss how beautiful this campus is. Seriously, they are constantly doing construction and I am always amazed at how gorgeous this campus looks at any given day. You will NOT get bored on this campus, there has to be at least 20 different restaurants on campus. It's like a city within itself. I have not been suicidal enough to take classes here during the week so I can not speak for parking, but hello- 40,000+ students come here, what did you expect it to be? Plentiful? No. For the amount of students that come here, the seem to be able to accommodate to the tens of thousands of cars that park on their campus. When I have came here during the week, I find parking: yes its painful but it is what it is. As far as the quality of education,I find it to be the best I've experienced. My prior university, FAU, was horrible and I had professors who were still finishing off their master's degrees and did not know the subject material, at all. Granted, this is NOT the University of Florida, don't expect an Ivy league education. I find the professors to be very competent and professional. I've loved every class I have taken and my major, Psychology, belongs to one of the best colleges on campus. The staff within my department always make themselves available, answer every question I have and are friendly as can be. Another thing about FIU that I find a constant in many reviews, is the tuition. Everyone needs to stop complaining. You haven't seen expensive until you attend the University of Miami. This is 2014 the cost of education has skyrocketed just like everything else in the world. Degrees are expensive nowadays. We are blessed to be able to afford a college education, most people would die to have a college education. I'm a grad student @ FIU and have a few things to say about the modesto a. maidique campus. Full disclosure: I got my Bachelor's from FSU so this may be a little steep here lol. The bads: 1. Half the teacher's I've had at FIU don't give three flying........ about the students! A lot of them teach and then run out of the classroom once they say class is over. Ummm... hello!!! I had a question. Please do not leave right after class....that's so rude! 2. The financial aid department is a complete sh*tshow! They can never deposit the money in my account on time. They never pick up the phone. Ayy, disaster! 3. The students here are so diverse that it kind-of pisses me off. I hear 5,000 different languages being spoken here every day. I rarely hear students speaking English. I especially hate it when they have to present in front of the class and I'm sitting there wondering "WTF are they saying?" The goods: 1. Nice campus. Clean. 2. Close to the turnpike-easily accessible from wherever you're coming from 3. The classrooms are pretty up-to-date, technology wise. 4. After 2 and a half years (of something that should have taken 2), I have good and bad things to say about FIU. The good: Beautiful facility, with plenty of areas to study. Business career services is pretty good at hooking you up in a decent job in a metropolitan area with very few of them. The quality of my marketing program was decent, if not great, and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved on campus. I did a special focus (and certificate) on sales and CRM and that program was excellent. Or maybe maybe my professors were just really good sales people who made it seem excellent, but either way, a good program for one of the only lucrative career paths in South Florida and the head professors of this program are unbelievably talented professionals. This school also has an exceptionally good-looking student body. I literally can't believe my eyes at times. Oh and it's cheap, even with all of the fees. The bad: Anything involving advisement, financial aid, or graduation is an absolute shit show. Good luck finding a parking spot to access that beautiful facility, and no, you don't have other transit options. This is the social life at FIU: you will meet people that take a class with you for a semester and tell you their life story between classes, abruptly disappear after finals, and then mysteriously hit you up a year or two later with some "business opportunity" that involves Herbalife or Amway. Overall, I am proud of my school, but I'm not sure if I would suggest it unless you are a long-time local who understands the South Florida dynamic. Even then, you still won't particularly enjoy FIU if you are the type of person that uses turn signals. Still, the quality of education and facility isn't all that bad, and that IS the number one reason to attend a university. Actually, the quality of this school is leaps and bounds ahead of other South Florida-area schools like Nova and FAU, and the value proposition is a lot better than UM. But if you are not local, either stick with UM or come to South Florida in 20 years, after you already have an education and career. read more

FIU is a school for very independent capable personalities. what i mean is that teachers here do not care what you do they believe that the students should be responsible for what they do. It is a perfect school to teach you about your degree but also about what life is gonna bring. TIPS FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS Look into what you are getting into before deciding to do anything. Taking classes with friends is wonderful because they push you to go to class and when its time to study they are there. Studying is extremely important but remember you're young and in college so enjoy your time as much as you can and as responsible as possible. BANG FOR THE BUCK FIU is kind of expensive but i do not think it is overpriced. All Universities are tough on the budget but for what you get, FIU is at a good price. work hard and get scholarships and you will be fine. AM ENJOYING BEING HERE the most important thing is to be involved. just like any university, If you just come go to class and leave you are never gonna enjoy your time. I have met new people and all of them are very helpful. Lets not forget that Miami is an awesome party city but remember you are in college and it is your job to be responsible while having a great time. LEARNING A LOT What some people do not understand is that college is not all about book learning its also about life experiences. FIU is a great school for both. the teachers are a bit tough at times and helpful but that is their job. teachers want you to learn about life while learning about your major. If I could give negative 3 stars i would. This school is an absolute joke. It definitely is international. Students don't even speak English and get a degree. So we know what that says about the school. I studied theater here 5 years ago - it's a terrible program. Save your money and go study at a conservatory in NYC or study Liberal Arts and leave asap! read more

I'm not going to lie. When I came to FIU as a freshman I was looking forward to the "college experience"-- new friends, no cliques and freedom. I was so wrong. When you walk into GC you might as well be walking into a scene from the movie "Mean Girls." Those stupid so-called "Greeks" that pay money to have tons of friends with stupid bows in their hair. The Greeks sit in one area of GC (in front of Pollo Tropical- good luck finding a seat unless you have greek letters on your tshirt or a ridiculous said bow in your hair), the ghetto kids by Cafe Bustelo or in the Pit passing out flyers for some lame show. I felt like I was in high school all over again. And don't even think about getting involved in campus life unless you're greek or have sold your soul to FIU in some way! SGA is filled with them. SGA- better known as the student government organization that does absolutely nothing for the students. My fiance was a senator for a year and resigned-- he tried to make actual, positive changes for the students (the STUDENTS, not the greeks, mind you) and found enemies very quickly. It's very sad that these people are only interested in what can benefit their organizations as opposed to the student body in general. When they built that ridiculous stadium for the tragic excuse for a football team, SGA president and Vice-President got priority, box seating. Only they (and their "brothers and sisters," of course) were allowed inside. The only good thing FIU gave me was a degree, and even that was a joke! I graduated from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication-- what a waste! If you're a journalism or communications major, DON'T GO HERE! Instead of utilizing a fully functional television studio for news shows, or as a way for students to practice in front of a camera, they RENT IT OUT to a third party and DO NOT allow SJMC students to use it until the last two weeks of their senior year! By then, obviously, it's too late. It's such a disservice to students in particular, specifically students who might not have had enough experience in front of a camera or hands-on experience producing a news show. Instead they make you do these ridiculous projects which will not serve you at all in the future. What a joke. read more
