I felt supported, safe, and connected throughout, and my baby and I had a beautiful birth surrounded and held by their team. When I first got pregnant, I started out seeing an OB. In the medical system, the visits were short and perfunctory. I felt like I was checking off boxes on their end, and not getting any value or support. When we switched to Pacifica care, the difference was immediate and apparent to both myself and my partner. They cared about how my partner and I were doing mentally, emotionally, and physically, and provided holistic advice whenever we had to make decisions for the baby. Having a natural birth was challenging but such an amazing experience, and I can't imagine having done it without the midwives or in an environment that felt super familiar, homey, and safe. Thank you Cindy, Audrey, Tracy, Evaly, Esther for your love and care bringing our baby into this world.

We were really fortunate to find our birth doula (who we love!), but the other 2 candidates were not very impressive. The first doula missed our appointment with no follow-up communication. We were initially confused and thought she was the coordinator for BB, because she only communicated by text. The actual meeting was just by telephone so there was no face-to-face interaction, which felt strange. We could've easily FaceTimed or Zoomed. So communication and reliability were not great. The second doula abruptly canceled our half-hour appointment when we were 10 minutes late for a 30-minute appointment due to my husband wrapping up a Zoom meeting. During our appointment time, she was responding to my emails (in which I apologized for being late), but insisted she could no longer meet with us. I thought this was a really bad sign about what she would be like to work with - labor and delivery is rarely precisely timed and some flexibility is needed. In addition, her email said that she lives in Portola Valley, but we live Berkeley (also where Brilliant Births is located). This also struck me as strange, because it would take 1.5 hours for her to arrive to meet us at the hospital, which is not ideal.

I am happy-ish overall that I got my prenatal care and birthed my baby with Millie. Pros: All the…read moremidwives are kind and well-meaning. Cons: amongst the midwives, there is a very broad spectrum of experience and competence. This matters a little during prenatal care, and matters A LOT during your delivery. I had a healthy pregnancy, but a complex labor where very nuanced fetal heart monitoring and a whole set of particular interventions were required to deliver baby safely and avoid the need for a C-section. I ultimately had a successful VBAC, which I am absolutely thrilled about. But I believe I would not have had this outcome were it not for the particular midwife who came on shift and took over at 8 am the morning after I labored all night. She had decades of experience and came with confidence, conviction, and a well-calculated plan for how to proceed with the labor without harm to the baby. She did all sorts of things I didn't even know they could do during labor to help things along. On the other hand, before she came on shift, it felt as though we were headed into C-section territory. There didn't seem to be a plan for how to proceed with the labor successfully, and the less experienced midwife was perhaps too intimidated by the risks to take various actions. This range of experience would be the case with the hospitalist midwives too, so I don't fault Millie for this. It's just important for people to know that the person on call when you deliver might end up making a huge difference in your birth outcome, birth experience, and birth story. If you can afford care outside of insurance, your best bet is to go with a boutique midwifery practice where you know that all, not just half, of the midwives are super experienced.

I strongly recommend AVOIDING Millie Clinic. As an oncology nurse, I understand how healthcare…read moreshould function and don't make complaints lightly, but this was the most disorganized and unsupported care I've experienced, especially during my first pregnancy. Early on, I had severe vertigo with vomiting and called the on-call midwife twice, leaving a voicemail. My calls were never returned, and I had to follow up myself days later. There were repeated issues with labs and communication. I work 8am-7pm and asked multiple times for my labs to be sent to Stanford so I could complete them at work, but I received little help. I was later told labs were "missed" that were never ordered at all, and then blamed for not asking, even though I had multiple times. I had to have a colposcopy done for a potentially serious concern to which my biopsy results sat in the system for days without anyone contacting me. This put major stress on me that was completely avoidable. When I called, I was told, "If it were something bad, they would have called you," which felt dismissive and completely inappropriate. I would never fathom saying this to any of my patients who are asking about their results. I consistently used the patient portal as instructed, yet messages often went unanswered. I never filed a complaint, but a patient experience representative contacted me, encouraged me to be a "difficult patient," and later inaccurately reported that I used profanity toward staff. This was completely untrue and changed how my provider treated me. It was deeply upsetting and unprofessional. This was my last straw. I understand that healthcare isn't perfect, but misrepresenting a patient's character is unacceptable. I later received an email acknowledging that my words had been relayed incorrectly and apologizing for the misunderstanding, which only confirmed that the situation had been handled unprofessionally. By then, my trust in the clinic was gone. I ultimately transferred my care because I did not feel supported or safe. I cannot recommend this clinic to other pregnant patients.

Ronit is very responsive whenever we had questions. She was very informative during our meetings leading up to my due date. One big thing for us was making sure our doula did not push their own agenda or replace my husband during the labor/delivery process. Ronit was respectful of our wishes, empowered my husband with hands on techniques and ways to better support me, and provided comfort and additional knowledge about labor which gave us peace of mind since we were first timers at the labor process, and that was priceless. Every early week was dotted with an Erin meeting, and they were like mini-meditations in that newborn era: lessons on how to do it and the feeling, as she departed, that we could. Everything we know, we learned from Erin -- from how to breastfeed, bottle feed, how to pair the two in a way that supported our goals and our baby's health. Her home visits and hands-on teaching were invaluable, and always swiftly documented with an email our sleep-deprived parenting brains could re-read for reference. We credit so much of that to the care we received from Flo, Jasmine, and Aimée. I can not recommend them highly enough. For context, I delivered at 44 years old with an IVF pregnancy. From the get go we felt in such good hands. In approaching the care of mom, they make space for the whole person (and the the partner/family experience). At each appointment my husband and I felt heard and seen as we moved through the process. They ask questions and listen deeply. They tend to not just your physical state but your emotions - your head, heart, and soul. This was critical in healing from the trauma of our second birthing experience and making space for a different kind of experience. Their care is based in expertise, research, data, and professional experience and they also leave room for our primal knowledge and intuition. This allowed us to trust my body while also having medical experts alongside us. A month before our child was due, my father died. This was an unexpected emotional wave at an already emotional time, and they held space for me to process and integrate this grief into the final weeks of pregnancy and labor. Our delivery experience was exactly what we hoped for - and I know how rare that is having had two previous experiences that did no go as we had hoped. Flo, Jasmine, and Aimée are an incredible team who helped us manifest a safe and healing delivery. (Some background: Our second child was born during the depths of the pandemic. We had a stressful pregnancy and a traumatic birthing and immediate postnatal experience, during which we received subpar care from a team of doctors. Coming into this third pregnancy we were intent on having a different experience, hence choosing midwifery care. After interviewing two different teams of midwifes we chose Collective Birth.)
