Flying Colors Comics in Concord is everything I love about going to a comic book stores. I love the new location by the way! The staff is genuinely friendly, welcoming and know their comics. I appreciate their helpful approach when asking about new releases, recent books on their shelves. They definitely have a solid selection of graphic novels and comic-related collectibles to browse through. Oh, their back-issue wall has so many great books on display! This is easily one of my favorite comic shops in the Bay Area. Whenever I'm visiting family in the 707 I make it a point to stop by. Highly recommended for comic fans of all kinds. read more

We visited this store yesterday, because my daughter is a big anime fan. My husband knows about this place because he's a big comic book fan. The guys that work here are really nice, and friendly. I feel bad for the review im about to leave because my experiences here havent always been bad. This shop, however, has the Monopoly for comic shops in Pleasant Hill, so unless you want to make a decent drive, you Have to go to them. That said, I think they know that, and because of it dont always treat customers well at all. I recently called in to see if they had a specific comic in stock to which I was told "Nope, we got those in and sold out quick" I made this call at 3pm and drove to Zeppelin comics who had it in stock and held it for me. Flying Colors had other comics being held for me so I stopped by there on the way home at 5:45pm. I walk in to grab my comics, only to see 20 of the issues I had just called in about right there at the counter. The employee who helps me tells me they re upped an hour before.. Youre telling me No one in the shop had any idea they would be ordering more at 3pm and have them stocked to sell by 5:45?? Lol, it was Super deceitful, and not the only incident by any means. Ill be making the drive to Oakland where the staff at Cape and Cowl are Always honest, Always friendly, Don't take business as a given, and Always treat you with respect. You cant say Anything to employees at Flying Colors without them acting like they know everything and that you, the customer, have absolutely zero clue about comics, even if you've been walking the planet longer than some of them and collecting comics since before they were a gleam in their daddy's almondsack. I dont recommend this shop unless you have no transportation and have to Uber within Pleasant Hill, have only enough money for the 1 or 2 comics youre looking for, or as an absolute Last resort. Cape and Cowl, Zeppelin Comics, are both much better and far less stressful options for the comic collector read more

Selling comics to comic collectors. Went to buy at least 75 dollars worth of comics. Wanted the different variant covers of 2 titles. Fools wouldnt sell me more then 2. I wasnt trying to buy all of their stock. Just wanted one of each. Thought they wanted to make money. Guess not. Act like they are the last comicbook store in the world. They suck. Will not be back. This place is super organized and helpful. Usually you head to a comic book shop and its super cluttered. The employees were super helpful with what I needed. I ended up picking up some novels and shopped around for things with my family. The prices are on par with everything else, but buy local. read more

SELLER BEWARE I've been going to this store for about 8 or 9 years since their old location. I had never sold comics before, only purchased. I went in there hoping to get my comics priced, learn a thing or two about the process, and maybe sell my stack of comics. The employees were helpful and respectful. The "buyer" was extremely rude, gave me attitude and treated me like I was stupid for asking simple questions. He offered me a very low price, I said could we do 25$ more? I was Hoping to negotiate. But instead He said "Nope that was your chance have a nice day" Safe to say I'll be taking my business elsewhere in the future until someone new takes over. The "buyer" was older white gentleman with white hair, glasses, and overweight, yep. The owner. So beware if you ask a question about something, you're probably an idiot. read more

Amazing comic book store! The selection is extensive and so many different franchises are available for purchase! The workers are also super inquisitive and always ask about what I'm reading or about a specific character and you can really tell they care about what they do. It's sort of like a museum to me, they're so many different statues and collectibles it's a lot of fun to look at. Highly recommend dropping by. read more

The comics are difficult to look at in the cramped shelves. The comics all get damaged when you take them out of the wooden shelves. The comics dont have bags and boards. Shopping at and using this comic book store can be enjoyable depending on your expectations. There are some downsides, however. First, a positive is that the new location is more convenient in my opinion. Even with trader Joe's nearby there is ample parking in lot and it is closer to a freeway and sunvalley mall now, making it more accessible in my view. Their hours are satisfactory by comic book store standards. It is nice that there is still a store in Contra Costa County bc it has become a black hole for comic book stores( danville and lafayette areas are too snooty and rents are too high. East and West contra costa must not have anyone with the resources and motivation to open a store there that stocks new releases.) It is a store that will get have everything in terms of major releases. They may sell out and be out of stock if you don't preorder but you won't have to worry they won't get a release from a major publisher. They celebrate every major comic book yearly event like free comic book day (joe created it) and hold signings at the store. The store could be a little bigger but by comic book store standards it is large enough. The employees are knowledgeable and helpful. Now for the negatives. While the owner is knowledgable and has a significant place in the history of the industry he has become jaded and less enthusiastic about the comic book industry in general. He caters towards kids a little too much and has no interest in accommodating serious collectors. You will never find cgc slabs and graded comics here. He will never have any real sales and he has no online store. I can understand not using ebay and wanting to sell to the local community but some other local bay area comic bookn stores still have an online catalog for instore pickup. From my own personal experience as a man in his 30s that looks at least 10 years older than my age the employees engaged in ageism with me. They judged me by my haggard physical appearance especially zach and dylan. The new comics on the stands generally have more shelf wear on them compared to other stores. I don't really understand why since they are new releases and are being sold for the full retail price. Another problem is Joe doesn't want to accommodate serious collectors but he is always pricing most vintage comics so they are in line with online prices. He prices rarer variant covers higher than other stores like cape and cowl. I have no confidence in buying back issues from him without examining them first. He gets defensive if you ask to examine a back issue yourself. He doesn't list the approximate condition or any relevant condition details for his back issues on the outside bag . I have ended up buying issues with a detached cover, another with an overpowering strong acidic paper smell bc i mistakenly trusted him. If he feels that you should be happy with reading the comic and not care about the condition and potential resale vaule than he should be selling them at lower prices and discount them lower than online prices or other stores. He seems to want it both ways when it comes to the collector market. When he gets promotional comics that aren't free comic book day comics (ex. Batman day comics) he requires you to buy a certain amount in the store to get the "free" comics. Other stores like cape and cowl in Oakland do not do this. read more

My husband and I have been frequenting this business for many years. Last week they had free comic book day. And although we weren't there first thing, it's always exciting with people who dress up as super heroes from the different universes (Marvel, DC) and the artists and creators that sign their works and if you ask any of them for a picture with you odds are that they'll totally be down. The whole family is there on free comic book day and it's so nice to see their familiar faces. On a regular day to day basis, you'll find an incredibly knowledgeable staff there. They will happily offer to help/assist you on finding certain items. The store has books, plushies, magnets, etc. Another thing that the store has that we really love is a pack of blank comic books. We used to get them when my older daughter was younger and now we get them from time to time for our little 7 year old. Definitely check this business out. Joe has been running this shop for awhile now and you can see the passion for bringing the extraordinary to life. read more

Took our 10 year old to get some comics. He was a little overwhelmed so we looked lost. One of the employees came over and gave us advise and recommended a Star Wars comic. Our son loved it! He had a stack of books to get, but I had to have him pair it down. This place is bright and clean, just don't look up because it's dusty on top of the Spiderman. read more

Today was my first visit to Flying Colors. The staff went above and beyond in helping me find some great reads, super friendly and knowledgeable. The store itself is very well organized and easy to navigate. This is hands down the best comic shop I've been to and will definitely be back. Torn about how to write this review. I'd give it a 3.5 stars and rounded it to 4 for customer service. On one hand the customer service was terrific! But I found the shop poorly organized. A complete lack of signage about which sections were where and a lack of information about how the store was organized made it more difficult than it needed to be. PROS: Like I said, great customer service. Loved how almost all variants are at cost. And they have a selection of comics for FREE when you spend over $25! And these aren't throw away comics either. I got a variant cover Mace Windu and a couple other books that were really good (two were t my thing but come on -5 free comics?). Also the guy behind the counter was more than willing to be helpful which I really appreciated. CONS: The comics are arranged alphabetically by publisher. I think. It wasn't totally clear. And they have them on two different levels. One at eye level and the other on the floor! In between they had graphic novels I couldn't care about at all. It wasn't laid out in a clear and simple format. Instead it was spread out all over the shop. I would definitely return for the service but otherwise it's only okay. read more

This has been my comicbook store for the last 2 years. Great store. Great selection and orders always on time. They have a great selection from the major comicbook companies and indies. Open 7 days a week. I have to leave the area, so I will miss Flying Color Comics and hope they have continued success! Ive been going to this store on and off for over 30 yrs . but never will again the store owner Joe should be put out of business he is a scammer and will burn you and rip you off , I have seen him price hike books on new comic day to go with over price books on ebay ,no other other store in the bay area does that or tell , you can only buy 1 cover of a book if there is more than one cover when there is no sign posted to say that but let others do it ,ive been burned over 3 times to many by that crook well never again he has lost my business and may others do to his BS. This store has a lot of good variety of comic books and toys. The people that work here are friendly. Comic books range from cheap to pricier, depending off if a comic book is a compilation or not. There are a lot of DC and Marvel comics. There are Star Wars Legends comics and Disney Star Wars comics. There are other comic series and graphic novels. I am glad this comic book store is still around, considering how the comic industry has been in the last few years. read more

These guys are on top of their game. I come in weekly to pick up comics for my husband, they always have his books waiting behind the counter and call when items come in. This is a cool store! It is very organized and put together. You can find stuff very easily. I was kinda. Infuses how the new items are in alphabetical order being in the top shelf, middle shelf with random stuff then bottom shelf with more new items in alphabetical order. I know nothing about comics and comic book stores. I needed a gift for a 5 yr old and an 8 yr old boy. A friend recommended this store to me, so my husband and I went. This is a clean, well organized, well stocked place. Was greeted immediately by one of the friendly staff and told them what I needed/was looking for. They have an area dedicated to young children and had a great selection. The nice staff person (didn't get his name, but he was a nice young man-I guess this is showing my age!) helped me pick out some appropriate books that was not salacious nor objectionable but should appeal to boys just getting into comics. He really was well informed and knew his material and inventory. I did not feel pandered to, or talked down to. Great experience. The store is located near a Baskin-Robbins, so there is good parking. This is the best comic shop I've been in since high school (a million years ago). Staff are are super friendly and helpful, the store is well lit and clean. Most importantly, their selection is excellent, well stocked, and (gasp!) organized. It's super easy to find what I'm looking for, whether it's a new floppy on Wednesday or a trade from a while back. They also have a great kids selection, and I've already been able to get my 1 year old niece started on her comic journey with a DC board book. I haven't wanted or needed any special orders, so can't speak to that, but I've seen people look like they're ordering or picking up, and with approachable staff, I'm sure you'll get a reasonable response, regardless of whether they'll be able to accommodate. Support your local comic book shop! We need brick and mortar community stops like this for our geek needs to stick around. read more

Our fellow Yelper Suzy S. has a very talented son who is an illustrator and who just released a new graphic novel (along with at least one collaborator). I am one of those kinds of girls- you know the kind who likes sci-fi (not vampire stuff or horror) and who has had several friends who worked in the Comic Store business and one whom I grew up with that has his own GN along with other offerings. I have driven by this shopping center several times never realizing there was a comic store facing the street. Parking was easy and upon walking in, was greeted like an old friend. This is not a seedy dark comic store with a bunch of pervs like they try to show on Big Bang Theory, nor is it pretentious. I had a lot of fun meeting Suzy's son and getting his autograph and getting his latest and then ended up picking up the sequel to the GN "Bone" for my DD and another GN by my childhood friend that I didn't have(he was very impressed this shop had his old GN). To my old friends who did the comic book store work in Berkeley for oh so many years, this is quite a gem of a place and I hope it is around for a very long time. read more

Upon walking into this location I was NEVER greeted. Right in front of me were the most recently released issues for the most relevant comics. When I finally found the individual comics display towards the back the selection was poor. The signage claimed they had "thousands in back stock, just ask." Upon trying to test the signage claim, I tracked down a sales representative and asked for a few issues that are not old and would normally be carried by other comic book locations. To my dismay, the rep returned empty handed, which was disappointing because I had her look for several different series. To my disbelief, the representative claim they didn't have even one issue that I had had them check for me. In general this place had many comic volumes collections, not to many figurines, and A LOT of apparel, and A LOT of novelty items, but no real single issues comics. If you want a nice novelty shop to go to, this is your place. The staff seemed energetic but not focused on customers. The overall impression was that this place catered to their local customers, their regulars. read more

This last weekend I made special trip up from San Francisco to attend the incredible Jim Lee event signing. This was the first time I was at Flying Colors and it was an amazing experience. First off I didn't know how crazy the line was going to be since I was arriving with 3 hours left in the event, but the staff with their experience assured me that there wasn't going to be a problem for me and my wife to meet Jim. They have an astounding ability to predict and cut off the line appropriately so that no one who comes will be disappointed and turned away. I felt relieved. I have to make a special mention to one of their staff, Andy. A small boy and his grandfather showed up and the boy wasn't quite prepared for the signing and he didn't bring anything to sign. Andy recommended two titles and let the boy go into the store with very clear instructions on what to pick up inside. Andy actually had the boy repeat exactly what to ask for when he went in, while his grandfather was holding his place in line. He came out, was excited and prepared and found the exact pages he wanted to sign. It was a touching moment seeing the glimmer and excitement in his eyes and instilling the love for comic books for the next generation of readers. They moved the line and didn't over crowd the store. In fact the owner's wife Libby was so nice enough to help take pictures of fans with Jim so as to make sure the line moves smoothly and efficiently. After we had our items signed, we had a nice conversation with her and she sounded so glad that we discovered their store and gave us a nice history lesson of their store. Joe the owner was very nice as well as we mentioned how wonderfully laid out and organized the store was. Now selection wise, this store was unbelievable. We have several pretty good sized comic book stores in San Francisco, but we were completely unable to get some special 3D DC comic books that came out this month. Boy they had a great selection of these impossible titles to get. I got I think 6 of these special issues and they sold them for regular price, no markup. It was really fair. Infinity, an issue that sold through completely in SF, this store had a great supply of them. I must have spent over $40 there Saturday. I just have to say that the warm and welcoming staff made this experience memorable. I'll be there for sure on October 5th to celebrate their 25 years there. Rarely in this side of the Bay but since i was passing by, i decided to yelp what Comic Book stores were in the area & found this one. Glad i did! Picked up 3 comics i needed to complete my series of House of M as well as the first issue of Avengers: The Childerens Crusade. In the past month i have been to several comic stores around the Bay from Suisun to Berkeley to San Francisco and this one sticks out because of the well lit space ( i don't feel like I'm searching for things in a cave) and the friendly and helpful staff. Next time i'm in the area, i'm definitely coming back. I would have given an extra star but i have been to other comic book stores where their past issues that i was looking for were as low as 50 cents to 1-2 bucks. This place have cheap bins and sales too but didn't find anything out of it. read more
