This store is a mess. Extremely disorganized and not a lot of product. I do not recommend it.

They have a great selection of comics and trades. They also have a lot of collectable figures and such. This store won an Eisner award a while back for best comic retailer. Support your local comic book store!!! read more

Well I THOUGHT I'd left this review a long time ago, but it seems as though it's only today I'm actually telling you how awesome Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff is! If you haven't been in this 'comics and more' store within Oak Grove Plaza, come check them out. I'm not personally much of a comic book person, but I can appreciate the collection they have here and the knowledgeable staff. I had a work project a few years back that involved the valuation of a collection of comic books (none of which turned out to be of much value) but the store owner was super nice and took his time looking them over and talking with me. I live nearby, so sometimes I walk over just to browse the aisles a bit before stopping next door for ice cream or groceries. This unique store and it's staff are definitely a fun contribution to our neighborhood and this plaza. read more

I sometimes pop by this shop on my way to head to my favorite pinball and video game store, Phoenix Games, in Concord. This is a great neighborhood store with a clearly knowledgeable staff, well organized selection, and lots and lots of great stock -- a selection of newer, current issues, trades, art books and some select bronze and silver age books as well. The staff is so nice, reminds me of my favorite shop from where I grew up. Over the last year I've purchased a couple of their older books from them, and have found their grading and pricing for vintage comics to be on point! I appreciated that they let me take books out of the sleeve which is really helpful for verifying the grade and being sure I'm getting a fair deal! They've also always had something surprising or interesting when I stop by, both for myself and friends. Lovely place! Always enjoy stopping in. read more

This little comic books store is full of surprises. They have a very well assorted number of comics and, if they don't have what you're looking for, they'll order it for you. The staff is super helpful and they know a lot about their stuff. They're also honest too. If you ask for their opinion about something they haven't read, they'll let you know. For those who have been longtime readers or newbies starting out, this is a great place if you have any interest in anything comic book related. They have tons of comic books, graphic novels, posters, action figures, and lots of other neat things. The staff is very friendly and will ask you if you need any help finding anything. They're also readers too and it's cool that you can chat with them about anything comic book related. The store is pretty organized as well. The sections for the major publishers, such as Marvel and DC, are up front while the more lesser known companies are towards the back. They also have helpful tabs that tell you what came out last week or new this week. When you buy your stuff, they'll ask you for your name and e-mail so you'll be in their system. You can ask them if you bought a certain issue which is helpful so you don't buy two of the same books twice. Bags and boards are also sold separately for $.25 each. Some special guests have shown up as well. The very popular Stan Lee (everything Marvel) and Jim Lee (comic book artist) have visited this location. It's pretty cool if you're in the area. However, there might be a certain fee to see them (depending on the guest) and the wait may be long. I had to get a friend of mine to get some books signed for me by Jim Lee because I had to go somewhere after waiting in line for a couple of hours. I like this store a lot and I think you will too! You know, I've known about this place all my life. But I never really looked at for what it was. I have to admit I reviewed this place strictly as a noob. I'm still one but at least I have more common sense. The last time I walked out of that place, I had the same complaints that I never really brought up outloud. I had this mental block telling me this place was awesome. But, it's not that awesome. When you look at the place as a whole, they don't have a wide selection of products. They have ALOT of graphic novels. They have a few toys and lots of busts and statuettes and stuff. But their prices are what always bite me in the ass. They price things high because they feel that they can. And the workers there are always talking hella loud having their stupid ass conversations. This doesn't apply to all the workers, some of them are quiet and actually do their work. But most of the time I go there, they have those types of conversations where they think it's so hilarious but in the end, it's only funny to them, but then they stress that it's funny so you kind of just throw in the towel and chuckle for a tiny bit so they can feel better. I withdraw my five star rating. Flying Colors, I'm sorry, but I've found more reliable comic book sources in the Bay Area. read more

4.5 Hubby likes this store since he is a collector. He says this place sells old comic books at a reasonable price. My daughter also likes to look at the comic books they have for kids and says she is "starting her own collection." Lol! The people working here are all super nice and very welcoming! Growing up I was never a big comic book reader. I was familiar with characters from Marvel, DC, and even Dark Horse comics because my older brother was a big comic reader and collector. Stepping through the doors of Flying Colors really was like stepping back in time to my childhood. I immediately walked up to the counter to ask the guy behind it if he would like me to leave my back pack up there before looking around the store. He pointed to a stack up cubbies by the front door and told me I could leave it in one of those. Like most comic shops they sell an immense variety of comic novelties, including: Posters, toys, stickers, buttons, magnets, key chains, glassware, more toys, t-shirts, and lots more. A lot of the stuff is modern, but they also have quite a bit of vintage stuff, mostly behind the counter or hanging up on the walls. I browsed for a good twenty minutes. Admiring titles that I remembered growing up with, as well as newer ones including one called "SPREAD", which really called out to me seeing as it was very reminiscent of John Carpenters The Thing. There were two employees working. One, stood at the back counter and never actually said anything to me, just stared. The other one was Andy. A very cool guy who I talked with for a little bit when I first walked in. From hearing him talk to another customer he sounds very knowledgeable about comics (obviously), plus he's very customer friendly. read more

What a great local store. I walked in here the other day and was immediately greeted with a warm welcome and was asked if I needed any help. I was just looking around and they have thousands of comic books and bunch of other cool stuff. Flying Colors holds a special place in my heart - I grew up not far from their store and my best memories were when my dad would take me after school. I would get to pick out a few comic books (Archie Comics FTW) and then he would treat me to an ice cream from the Baskin Robbins next door. I don't live in the area any more but I do take time every so often to drive out and visit. The staff are all super friendly and knowledgeable, and they have the best selection of comic books and collectibles in the area by far! read more

We had such a wonderful experience at the store. We were just there and the person working behind the counter was so knowledgeable and taught us a few things about comic books. He offered my two kiddos a free comic book and they were so excited. He even gave us insight as to the binding of Japanese comic books and even taught us a new word: manga. Came in to check out a new comic book shop. Did not disappoint at all. Clean store with plenty of space and a variety of displays. I wandered over to the $8 hardcover bins and I stumbled upon a Battle of the Atom (10 issues). I thought it had to be a mistake. An employee saw me looking through it and pointed out that 4 pages were torn on one corner. $60 cover price? I'll take it! Helpful, talkative employees, deals, I love it! read more

Whew! These guys know their stuff. I stayed here for about 2 hours, talking to two of the employees about why I love Joe Quesada (and why they dislike him) and why Joe Madureira hasn't produced anything since Battle Chasers (playing too many video games!) and whether Kelley Jones is dead or not. Oh, and Jae Lee is doing some neat stuff with Stephen King lately. And Wizard 200 just came out? Nice! How much is Detective #27 going for? Wow. Chicago Comics gives this place a run for its money on Indy comics, but the guys here knew that. The graphic novels here are in perfect shape, and DON"T FORGET! Joe Field is a class act, and his store is as well. This is not the comics store caricatured on the Simpsons - but the opposite. It is clean, well stocked, has a friendly staff, and an owner who is socially aware and involved. Check out their kids section - something that not all comics stores have, and that most do not devote much effort to. There are also sections on comics art/history, comics about history (biographies and histories), religion, etc. - as well as a great selection of comics, graphic novels, and comics related merchandise. I compare the store to "Heroes Aren't Hard to Find" in Charlotte (my all-time favorite comics store, and one where I used to work), and since I'm not driving to NC twice a month to pick up books, I'm very happy to have Flying Colors in town. read more

Let me just say, I love the way comics smell. I usually open one up and just start smelling it because its awesome. Also YES I am a girl... I come here maybe once every few weeks for new issues. The people that work there are really nice. Its clean and always has new things to grab my interest everything is organized really well. The only thing that is off to me is the free comic thing. It used to be (I think) if you spend more than $25 bucks you can get a couple of free issues. now your total has to be 25 without tax to get the freebies not a big deal just something I noticed from the last time I was there I give it four stars read more

Best comic store I've seen in ages. Clean and friendly - no geek scariness here. The staff has always been helpfull and they really have avast selection of offerings.I bouught my husband "The Walking Dead" series (we love the TV series) and my daughter loves Archie Comics. This place reminds me a lot of Zapp! Comics back home in NJ. Small store but has a lot of material inside, i.e. action figures, t-shirts, and a ton of comics. The staff is very friendly and there's a lot of them to assist if you have any questions. They seem to have a lot of artists come in for signings, and look like they have a good inventory of anything you'd need (except for superhero-themed birthday cards...sadly this must be a niche market, they used to sell them but stopped due to lack of interest). It's located off Oak Grove and Treat, in the same plaza as Chipotle and Trader Joe's. You can get to it off Oak Grove, just wrap it around til you get to the entrance. Ample parking. read more

Sandwiched between a Basket Robins and a liquor store you could walk right by this cozy comic book store and miss it. They have a wide selection of merchandise besides comics, which includes movies, games, t-shirts, action figures, bobble heads, key chains, cards, figurines, graphic novels, stuffed animals and more. You can find a good selection of kitsch near the cash register. They have a fine selection of new comics and a fair selection of back issues. It's colorful and clean inside. I like the art done by local kids posted on some of the walls of their favorite comic book characters. You can also find some Japanese anime novels too. I haven't found any deals here (it's probably to close to the 2 local high schools to need to be cheaper) but I have found a couple of things missing from my collection and some cute brash oddities to take home. **** Update *** Just found out that the owner of this store is the genius behind free comic book day. This place have been my favorite Comic book store since I was young. When my dad and I go out sometimes, when we are around the area, we would browse the store a little bit. Always have your famous Marvel/DC comic to Children Disney/Old fashion favorites for kids to Anime/manga books. They do have the Free Comic Book Day first Saturday of the month of May. I like this place a lot. They have a great selection of Trades and graphic novels, which is good for me because thats all I read. Staff is for the most part very helpful. Great guy on Sunday ordered a trade that was out of stock for me. I really like the system of keeping track of what I order as well. Prices are fair, usually find some markdown stuff too. Im not into the toys, stautes or shirts but they do have a nice selection. I deduct one star because there was one guy there that is constantly "correcting" every conversation in the store. On Sunday there was a young kid having a fun conversation with his dad and another employee. This guy was sitting in the back near the busts and continued to butt in "No he doesn't"..."actually"...he is what people think of when they have a negative opinion of a comic shop. No one cares about you esoteric knowledge of all things comic. Let us shop and talk with people who enjoy communicating and don't correct every tiny, unimportant detail. read more

I really like this place... I went here to buy some batman and xmen comics for a friend. I perused both sections and then asked for help becauce I had no clue on what to get. The people here are REALLY helpful... they were able to go thru the stuff and help me find stuff that an avid comic book collector would or wouldnt have. I even got help from random people shopping there. It was really helpful to have the tags that said new this week, new last week, etc. This helped me a lot because I knew my friend had updated his comic book collection the week before... so I stuck to everything that said New This Week. My overall experience was really good here. I would definitely come back and would recommend this place to anyone. read more

This is a nice shop. I grew up reading comics and like to pick up a story now and again. I had a nerdy and fun conversation with Mike about different books and what we looked for in a good story. This is the kind of thing that makes it feel like a neighborhood shop. The place is clean and well-organized and they seem to be trying to make it approachable even for guys like me that aren't fanboys. Although to be honest I'd love to go fanboy on something, I just haven't found it yet. I walked out with some of the Waid Daredevils and "Thief of Thieves". This is a great shop with great people behind the counter. They are always friendly and so very helpful. Their selection of new titles is the best I've ever seen. From Marvel to DC to Image to Archaia to companies I've never heard of, they've got it all. And they've got the best selection of toys, statues, and comic-related wall art that I've ever seen. Every inch of that store has been crammed with comic-goodness. Every time I walk through the door, I find another have-to-have treasure. My one regret is that their back-issue selection is tiny.
