I cannot say enough good things about Flying Dog. Their product and their people are fantastic. Starting with the beer - Hands down the best beer I have ever had. You can really taste the time and care they put into their craft. The brewery - fun events with local artists, beer tasting and local vendors. The tour was an amazing deal - $5 for a tour of the factory, a Flying Dog glass and five (very large) beer samples. Great way to spend an afternoon. I was there yesterday for a friend's birthday and a group of us did the tour. I really liked the tour as it was informative and we got to sample the beer throughout the stages of development. How they got started and got their name is also interesting. The murals created a good vibe - especially cool to hear the owner was a friend of Hunter Thompson! At the end of the tour, you are provided tokens to sample their beer options - all of which I tried were very good. I especially liked the Bloodline for its Orange flavor. I think it is important to know that you cannot come here to drink and hangout. Only those taking the tour can drink/sampler on-site. This is different than most breweries I am accustomed to. That said, you can purchase beer to go, even in a growler. Definitely recommend a visit and lunch in downtown Frederick. read more

Came here on Valentine's Day and had a great experience! I'll list some pros and cons. Pros: the tour guides were really nice and friendly, 5 nice size free samples after the tour in a nice glass you get to keep, only 5 dollars to get in, nice tour without being too long, and enjoyable bar area with nice music. Cons: having to wait outside early to get tickets (even if you want a later time), small bar area, they could use a few more bartenders since it gets crowded after each tour gets out, and maybe expanding the bar area. Their tour is great! I take my company there for a fun time out together and they love it. A few of us don't even drink but it's still very entertaining and a fun experience. Ok, so I don't really like hops which this place is pretty much soley about...but the expierence was overall excellent and the prices reasonable. The brew tours are free, somewhat educational, and fun. One small drawback is that you need to have tour reservations to get into the bar. I'm not sure if this is only when the bar has met max capacity or for certain days of the week because I noticed other reviewers seem to have a different experience. Either way, it means it is NOT the bar to meet up randomly with friends. Fridays and Saturdays are usually booked about a month in advance. I went in July. This place is awesome. I would definitely recommend it. The tour of the brewery is highly entertaining since their staff are the best kind of deviants and the history involves Hunter S. Thompson. You get a drink on the tour, a wristband for I think 3-5 drinks? and a glass from the brewery for $5. Also, the brewery has more options than what you can buy in store and new flavors to try on tap. The beer is great, staff is entertaining and attentive, and you have a good time regardless of who you are with. I would recommend this as something to do with friends, family if they aren't uptight, or on date with someone you don't know too well. Took a private tour with 25 of my closest friends the morning of my wedding and it was the perfect activity to get the crew at ease and bonding on my big day. It was super easy to book. Very friendly staff from phone to in-person guide and greeter. The food truck is superb even if there is a bit of a wait to accommodate the volume of customers. Spent the weekend hiking in the Gambrills State Park and drinking in Frederick. Flying Dog was beyond awesome. We did the tour of the brewery and our tour guide, Broseph was extremely knowledgeable. He captured the attention of everyone on our tour with his amazing sense of humor and love of the company. He made the tour for sure. WARNING...DO NOT take an unplanned, spontaneous trip to the brewery without making an "on line reservation" MONTHS in advance. We were met at the door by an Oompa Loompa, who, I'm certain that their Raging Bitch IPA was obviously named for. She rudely informed us that they were "not a bar" and we could go to any number of restaurants to sample their beers. That "these people" (indicating/pointing to the folks in the tap room) had made "reservations MONTHS in advance." After that, bitchy, snobby UNwelcome reception, we will never EVER drink their beer again. We were planning on dropping some coin on product & merchandise...but after that they can just drown in their own hoppy bitterness.....jerks. What a waste of over an hour drive! Really disappointed in this brewery! Drove over an hour on a Wednesday for a tour and beer tasting. Their website clearly says Wednesday tours are first come, first served. I even called before leaving to be sure and was told "Tours start at 3:30, see you when you get here". Was completely frustrated to be greeted by rude, and unprofessional staff that laughed as they stated tours are booked weeks in advance and I should have made an appointment online. I tried to explain the situation and showed the staff members that their website is clearly incorrect, and they just shrugged and said "too bad, our website is outdated." We stayed for one beer and headed to the next closest brew pub. The disappointment of a wasted trip aside, the tasting room is very small with limited seating and the bartenders had no interest in discussing beers or answering questions. Will not be returning, and will think twice before buying another Flying Dog beer in store. read more

Had a great time the first time we were there about a year ago so we took two friends with us this time. (We live four hours away). We walked in and had to put our name in just get to the tasting room/outdoor open seating while the place wasn't even full. Waited 25 minutes just to get let in the second a tour let out. Took another 10-15 minutes to get a sampler since the once empty bar was now packed with tour people. Food truck got both my husband and I's food incorrect. Their tour is great and they have good choice of indoor and outdoor seating. There is usually a food truck there. You can get growler fills, crowlers, flights, and pints. This place sucks. First off, we just wanted to go get a beer or sample what they had. Nope! You gotta pay for a tour and then tbey give 3 small samples. Then you can buy a warm 6pack of your choosing. Lame! We showed up on a Thursday afternoon around 3pm. The guy at the front told us they don't start tours til 430, but we can sign up at 4. After the first tour at 430, he said there are tours every half hour. He said they are never busy on thursdays, to go get something to eat, come back between 4 and 430 to sign up. He wouldnt let us sign up right then and there when we showed up the first time. We left and went to fridays down the road and got back to the brewery at 4:06 and he said oh sorry the tour already started, next one is not til 530. Wtf. What happened to every half hour? We walked out with no plans of returning. If I want to drink their beer, I'll just go to the local gas station. That place has the potential to be a cool brewery, but the way they are running it now - don't waste your time! read more

I'm not a big drinker but when I drink it's usually Flying Dog. My husband and I went on their brewery tour a few months ago and really enjoyed the experience and the ambiance of the place. We are both chemists and really appreciated the lab showing. Lots of great art all around the place and good Hunter S. Thompson material for your entertainment. We had a sampler after and got to try some new flavors we loved. The staff was courteous and friendly and I legitimately had a great time. Ridiculous! We arrived just before 1 and all tours were sold out for the entire day. Then they would not let us sample anything without buying a growler or taking a tour.
