My wife saw a review for Flying Fish on TikTok, and as such our visit here immediately became a top priority. Craving oysters (when did we become these people?!), we stopped in for lunch, ordered a half dozen (and later, another half dozen), plus the Rockfish and Chips, and the Hot and Crispy Fish Sando. Everything was enjoyable: the sando was reminiscent of an upscale Fish Filet (I mean that in a positive way) with a tiny bit of heat; the Rockfish were fried in a salt-and-pepper-y seasoned batter that paired well; and the oysters, of course, were a particular highlight, as previously mentioned, since a second set was ordered to finish off the meal. The only disappointing thing about the whole meal was a rather uninspired spicy Bloody Mary, which didn't really do much for me, sadly. Lots of smoked salmon options as well! Very cool place, and one that my wife in particular has fallen in love with. Had the pleasure of having lunch here yesterday. We arrived and placed our order at the hostess stand. The ordering process felt rushed because as we were checking out the menu, there was a line forming behind us. After placing our order, we were given a table number for a table to sit at under the covered patio. I wasn't fond of the whole setup, but I proceeded to find our table and get some water, which was in a bucket that had a spigot. I ordered the 3-piece Fish and Chips, the Clam Chowder, 1/2 dozen local oysters, and 1/2 dozen imported oysters. I didn't like the Fish and Chips. The Fish tasted super bland and so did the tartar sauce it came with. The Clam Chowder was bland, but tasted good with the addition of salt and pepper. The Oysters were delicious and the imported 1/2 dozen was my favorite. All of my food tasted fresh. All of the staff were friendly and nice. Our food came out quickly. Great chowder here! I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of their seafood. The cocktails were made well. It's counter service and seating is outside but they have it well heated and insulated. We came on a chilly night and there was no problem keeping warm. Inside is a fish market which had a great selection of fresh seafood. This was in the top two meals we had while in Portland. The fried rockfish was very hot, crispy, buttery and fresh. You can tell the fish is high quality. The chips and fish tacos were equally delicious and full of flavor. Their tartar sauce and vinegar have a uniqueness that you can tell is homemade. Arguably the best Fish and Chips in PDX. The freshness of the fish really shines. It was cooked perfectly and I loved the light crisp batter. We were the first restaurant customers and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The owner Lyf and the staff are just so nice. Flying Fish is the best casual, mid-priced seafood restaurant in Portland. It started as a Portland Food Truck in 2010 and is a remarkable story of success. This place already had a "cult like" following and the new restaurant is going to be very successful. For me, this is the real PDX dining experience. Very sub par experience. We ordered a dozen oysters, salmon crudo and clam chowder. One thing about me- I love oysters. Give me some sauce and oysters and I'm a happy gal... but.. the oysters here really turned me off for probably a good while. It did not taste fresh and we probably left a good 5-6 oysters on the table as we did not want it. We were served once and did not have anyone check in on us within the hour and a half that we were there. They also charge a service or insurance charge for their employees. I don't mind the extra charge but for the service that we received.. it makes no sense. We paid $90 before tip for these three items with no service. We noticed a table get sat after us and they received prompt service multiple times and they were check in on regularly. I don't think it was a race issue but they were white (majority of people in establishment were white) and we are younger Asians so maybe they thought we would not tip? We like to tip well for good service and even regardless we still tipped 15% despite our experience. Overall the crudo was ok and the clam chowder - you could def find better but also not bad. I just think there's a lot of other spots in Portland that serves fresh oysters with at least decent service. read more

There is outdoor seating, in on a Friday around 1pm the wait was 15 min - you can order a drink and enjoy it while you wait, so for me this was no big deal. Once you're called, you order your food then sit down. We got the tacos (fresh and light, creamy but not salsa), the poke (MUST get, fresh and excellent), oysters (duh) and the Caesar salad (if you're a Caesar fan do it - legit anchovies involved). However, the service I got here on 12/23/23 was so wonderful I wanted to say thank you and show support for this local business. I came in wanting to eat oysters, due to the holidays, the bar was closed..but the market was still open. The guy selling the oysters was incredible and super helpful. Walked me through how to shuck an oyster, was thoughtful and funny .. which was very reassuring.. seeing as my craving was going to have me handle a knife I've never used before. I got home with a dozen oysters, and was able to successfully shuck them and enjoy.. without a trip to the ER or a scratch on me. So not only did I get incredible seafood.. So many delicious varieties of oysters! This little oyster bar is inside Providore, a bougie grocery store on NE 24th and Sandy. The counter has I believe 9 seats, and usually about ten or so oyster options, as well as a few bottles of wine, and a few fresh fish, uncooked appetizers like ceviche or poke. It's a great place to for a glass of wine or beer and a few oysters before dinner in the neighborhood, which we often do. We always share a half dozen of the chef's choice. I love watching them shuck, as they do it so well. You definitely won't need a fork to ensure that little guy is separated from the shell as it always is. The folks doing the shucking are so friendly, and you get nice and cozy next to the people around you. I've sat for 30-40 minutes and enjoyed myself, and I've also just come for a quick oyster slurp on the go. Whatever your preference, if your a fan of oysters, or just oyster curious, come here! We were waiting 20+ minutes just for a server to check in on us... when they finally did, we had already finished our meal 15 min ago. I would have ordered another drink if they did check up. It was not busy AT ALL and still no attention to customers.... I saw multiple customers have to flag the server down to order dish or drink. I don't know if they hired people that don't have any experience FOH or if customer service doesn't matter to this place. The new location on Burnside is dope - went there for the first time a few days ago... totally different vibe than the old location when they were inside of Providore Fine Foods, a.k.a. "Hoity Toity Central." The new location has more of the vibe of an upscale crab-shack that you might find in a coastal town. Staff is always friendly, and the place was hoppin'!
