This place is run by Dan Tag and he's a stand-up guy. He's very personable and is the epitome of why I like to do business with small businesses. He's local, he's willing to work with me on price, and offers expert opinions on the overall outcome of my projects. For some background, I'll have an artist showcase at Good Karma Cafe on 9th and Pine Streets October, November, and December 2018. I'm displaying my photographs and I needed them framed. So I shopped around at Flying Pig picture frames at the recommendation of my coworker in addition Seven Arts in Old City, a framing shop in Rittenhouse, and Tap Gallery in South Jersey. Dan was by far the cheapest. He took one look at my photos and gave me a nice price. For reference, in Rittenhouse I was being quoted at roughly $100 per photo after discounts with cheaper materials! What most resonated with me was that Dan was opinionated and insightful and had his own vision for my work. I'm brand new to Printing and framing my photos so ultimately I relied on the expertise of the framer. Dan recommended a basic black Gallery wooden frame with roughly 2 inches of white matting with a black line. No other framer had such a vision. I came to him suggesting an all white frame with all white matting and he said it really wouldn't work because I have too many whites in my photos. Custom framing is one of those things that you get when you hit a certain age. I fought it for the longest time because as soon as I got it I'd have to leave youthful shenanigans by the wayside but when boo got me a Brian Dawkins print and a Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent Stanley Cup print I knew that anything but the best would be disrespectful not only to those three gentleman but really to my fandom. We arrived at Flying Pig a bit timid and a not really knowing what to expect. I showed the young lady working the prints and told her I wanted the Flyers matted in orange and the Dawkins matted in Eagles green. I picked out a pretty standard black frame and waited for the quote. Each was $75 I was shocked, I was fully expecting her to say $500 or some outrageous number. We then decided we'd get a poster my little brother found in a salvage garage in Fishtown (???) of the Please Touch Museum expo from the 80's. It definitely had an eighties vibe to it sort of like the cover of the Miami Vice box set or the front of City View Apartments. It was yellow, pink, blue and orange and had several wooder stains and age marks on it. We were shown several options, each had a cool back story of where it was from and we ended up choosing an aged reddish orange-ish frame that was repurposed from a church in New Orleans, that's pretty rad . Flying Pig has opened up a whole new world of home decorating to me and as much as I love floating frames, the custom frames are so much better (please reference pictures). read more

Love frame shops like this. The concept is great, it's really trending now but I was given a brief tour of the shop and there really is a huge variety of frames to suit your needs. Most of what they specialize in is "upcycled" frames from other (sometimes unconventional) materials. They got me a fair price on a nice frame for a print I have. Why would someone living in New York City, take a special trip out to Philadelphia to get his art custom framed? Because Flying Pig Picture Frames is unlike any other custom framing shop I have ever been to. I was put on to the shop after an artist who showed at my gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, had the most amazing frames on his photographs. I asked him about it, and he said his buddy Dan who had a custom frame shop had made the frames out of recycled wood that he had found during one of his many travels. I think that is what appealed to me the most, the fact that they had so many vintage frames and frames with very unique wood. The best part was that frames were already pre made, and so many shapes and sizes that almost all of the 10 + items that I brought to be framed, I only had one piece that I had to make a custom frame for. This not only allowed me to have a great collection of cool frames it also saved me a bunch of money. Jeni, was awesome to deal with! She was polite, really took her time, and was very thoughtful in helping me pick out a frame. 1. Super unusual frames. They have such a selection here! Any size, color, material. It looks like they even have reclaimed vintage frames and custom builds. You can go to Ikea to get a cheap one, or you can come here to get a quality, beautiful, unique frame. 2. Convenient hours. They are open until 7PM so you can stop by after work. 3. Friendly service. Dan knew exactly what I was talking about and immediately showed me examples of what I was picturing in my head. 4. Great prices. Much less than I thought I would pay. 5. They play hardcore music in the store. I haven't listened to hardcore since maybe 10th grade at an underage show in Scranton. I'm a littl late with this review & its gonna be long.. End of summer 2014 I was searching for a certain kind of frame I thought already existed for a very specific idea I had to change the crap frame on a unique piece of art. During that search, for recycled tire picture frames, or some variation, I somehow stumbled across Dan at Flying Pig. That search gave me little else & I was especially delighted when it was for someone local to me in Philadelphia, YEAH!! I called and spoke with Donovan on a day Dan was out & he seemed equally mystified by the path that brought me there. I don't think many people had called asking for recycled tire frames, though that'll probably change. A different day I went there with the art & spoke with Dan. Short conversation, plan & deposit later..I left it with him. He went about finding 4 tires that were the same size, with similar treads that he could bend to his will, mount & clean up to make my frame. It took 2 months (a month less than he thought, I might add). Cost a little money, as good diligent artists deserve & voila, it was done. SEE PICS. I decided to pick it up on my birthday which happened to be a day Dan wasn't in. The whole way there I tried to talk myself down saying: "Don't have too high of an expectation, this is recycled and he has to bend it and mount it & that's difficult & no way will they match up perfect so don't expect that. You're going for the juxtaposition at the best quality you can get it. Be prepared to be satisfied with the result!!" Well wholly s!@#burgers it was/is P E R F E C T I O N!!! Pics don't do it justice but I friggin love love LOVE it!! He made it look seamless, like 1 tire just cut in 4 pieces. Clean & clear. The rough edges on the inside & outside sparkle a little in a certain light where its hung.. wish I could've captured it better cause that's a cool littl bonus. I tried for 2 weeks to get Dan on the phone to compliment him to tell him how incredible this work is, how I was happy to write many great reviews, once its hung & I had some pics to post. And here we are. I also want to mention that going there, I find no less than 5 frames I want to buy immediately that I have no art for..lol Every single time. I like recycled & especially mixes of industrial-type metal frames.. they have an abundance. Growing up I remember a print that hung in my grandmother's home. A few months ago I mentioned to her that I loved that piece of artwork. She sent it to me, but it broke on the way to Philly. Luckily it was insured, and I was able to get it re-framed at the Flying Pic Picture Frames. They gave this vintage print a new vintage frame and beautiful matting. Okay. Listen up everyone. This place is AMAZING. I walked in not knowing anything about frames / hoping I would not spend a ton of money. Johnny walked me through everything / explained the process and pricing. I thought I got a deal for 2 frames (one huge one, on 11 x 11) for $165. They finished them THE NEXT DAY....seriously, that turnover is amazing. I walked in and was blown away by how beautiful they turned out -- THEN they told me my total was actually $140 and were giving me a deal because it was my first time and they are just nice people. So $140 for 2 gorgeous frames, quick turnaround and kind, honest people. Can't get better than that. ALSO, on one of my prints, I had smudges from having it for over 4 years...somehow (idk how they did this) they got rid of the smudges and made it look brand new! Amazing. 5 stars. They were super helpful as soon as I walked in , helped me to select beautiful frames .... the price was fantastic and the customer service was Friendly, amazing and helpful. It's a really neat little shop .... lots of really cool things to look at. ....the best part....they called me the next day and said my framing was ready ..... literally 24 hours later .....which was a really nice surprise .... I finally found one i loved and they were done within a week! I also love how they weren't showing me all the beautiful, expensive frames because i told him i had a budget. Very respectful and easy to work with. I thought it was a decent price but some friends of mine considered it expensive. Don't think they know how hard it is to do framing yourself. I am an opera singer that happen to have a lot of posters and art related to my work. for years I was neglecting to frame anything since every place I was checking the prices were insane and the options quite bad. After reading the reviews here and seeing some of the work done in pics I decided to give it a try. Dan was amazing, he took the time and the patience to listen what we wanted and matched everything to perfection. The prices were right and he even offer a free delivery since some pictures were really Huge. The Job was promised between 4-6 weeks to be done, but by my surprise he called 3 weeks and half later and everything was done to perfection !!! Dan is amazing. I've been here several times now with my wife to get all of my framework done and Dan has been a fantastic help. It's a very comfortable atmosphere, and I was helped in deciding what frame would look best for the pieces I had brought in. Dan also offers museum glass which is what I get for all of my frames, the glass is so clear and transparent you can't even tell it's there and it makes every piece I get framed look phenomenal. For those uninterested in reading a long review, I can sum up my experience as a customer here in two words: Good Karma. I stopped by last Wednesday to get a poster I bought for my sister's birthday framed. The owner Dan greeted me warmly when I entered the store as well as took the time to ask me about why the piece was important to me. He worked with me to find a beautiful one of a kind frame within my price range and then accommodated my tight time frame. On top of all that, the bottom right portion of the poster warped inside the tube during travel, however because Dan is so talented once the poster was inside the frame the imperfection was gone and everything looked perfect. My experience was so positive I created a yelp account just to be able to leave this review. It's a frame shop. What makes one frame shop better than another? When you first walk in, there is a wide variety of frame portions showing all of the styles that are available. It is a tiny space and there is a lot crammed in but it has a homey feel. The people inside are clearly knowledgeable about their field and each time I've brought something in for framing, I've left pleased. read more

I had a comprehensively stellar experience with Flying Pig Picture Frames. After visiting several other shops around Philadelphia and being disappointed with framing selections and apathetic customer service I did a little more research and learned about FPPF here on Yelp. I'm ever-so-glad for other Yelpers recommendations because it brought me the opportunity to work with the fun, creative, thoughtful, talented and courteous folks at FPPF who immediately translated my mind's eye vision into an even better than expected outcome for the two prints I brought in. I was seeking to have two differently-sized cheese portrait prints by Philadelphia-based artist Mike Geno put into complimentary frames that had a rustic, unique, but still vibrant feel to them. The shop had on-hand several planks of beautiful salvaged barn wood from the Lancaster area whose hue, surface crackle, and natural marks of their former life such as a slightly rusted nail hole made a perfect pairing for the prints. They guys at FPPF made the entire process exciting and informative and the work was done on time and to the highest quality. I cannot recommend the artists and craftsman at Flying Pig Picture Frames highly enough. Don't waste your money on satisfactory framing options elsewhere. Every time I have asked someone for a recommendation for a frame shop, they always respond: "well I go to place X... its not cheap, but no frame store is". Because of that, I have never even bothered going to a frame shop, and instead have bought frames from Ikea. But I decided to get a photo framed for my best friends birthday, and thought I should get something nicer than Ikea...So I walked over to Flying Pigs to check it out... What really set this place apart was how many custom frames they had pre-made, in all different shapes and sizes, and one of a kind frames as well. I had bought a frame from ikea for $30 that is made from about the worst, cheapest materials possible - plastic frame, plastic (not glass) over the photo... And here, I found a custom, one of a kind, hand made frame for $45. I will gladly pay the extra $15 for a hand made, one of a kind frame that is made from materials 3X the quality of ikea. Also, the woman working there was really helpful and nice. I totally recommend going here! Awesome pre-made frames (they also do custom frames, which are obviously more expensive), great prices, great quality! So if you have a photo you want to print out, go here first! Look through their awesome pre-made selection, which is half the price of usual custom sized framing. read more

Dan is the f*%#!n man!! I've taken three pieces so far (5 in total, one was a set of 3) and was thoroughly impressed each time! I was pretty open minded and up for whatever he had in mind, each time I've popped in we spent no more than a couple minutes finding a frame that seemed to work perfectly, or upon Dan seeing the piece would have a frame in mind instantaneously. Turn around time has always been quick for me, about a week and he'll shoot you a text that your piece is ready. Haven't gotten a lot of stuff framed previously but I feel Dan's prices are fair for the custom framework, reclaimed wood, and the small business atmosphere, even if it were cheaper I'd rather pass my buck along here than Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc. Only possible gripe is store hours are a little short but how often do you say "man I really need to get the frame shop today or else..". By now these guys have framed up about 4-5 prints for me and each time I am more and more impressed. I've gone the "I want to spend $60 max" route as well as the "let's get crazy with this one" route and they kill it every time. They have always been transparent about timing, which is appreciated. If they are busy and it will take a month to get the job done, they'll give you a head up before they take your money. And when they do let you know it's time for a pick-up, they send you a text! I found this shop when I first moved down to Philly 3 years ago because of its great Yelp reviews. The price I was quoted for a large back piece in a repurposed barn wood farm with leather trim corners was amazing! Three years later and one move to the complete other side of Philadelphia later and I'm still going to that shop 'cuz Dan and Johnny are super personable and great dudes who do amazing work.
