This is inside a big square with lots of brewery and food options. You order on an iPad and wait about 8 minutes for them to heat up the food. There are lots of unique empanadas options along with snacks & Meyer lemon ice cream. I ordered a Monterey Bay Fish empanada and ice cream. The wait was around 8 minutes. There is no seating so you would eat either take away or at one of the brewery locations. I know flavors and taste are personal preference and this review is based on personal preference. The fish empanada was too salty and fishy. The fish was also very dry and lean white fish, tasted more like a salted fish than anything else. The fishyness overpowered everything else too. The Meyer Lemon Ice Cream has a pastyness and the texture is not smooth. I felt too much lemon peel was added so there was a bitter tangy flavor than the soft Meyer lemon flavor. The price is quite expensive about $6 per item. read more

At first I was impressed, and then my experiences lately have been disappointing. When I first visited Fonda Felix I was more than overjoyed to discover a spot that served Argentinean style empanadas. Tucked away behind a corrugated metal door and a colorful menu makes the operations of Fonda Felix quite interesting. There is a bell to ring for service, but the staff are often stretched thin which leads to inconsistent wait-times for orders. The first series of initial issues began a few months ago with slow and inconsistent service times. Despite ordering to pick-up at 11:30AM, we often had to wait upwards of 15 to 35 minutes to receive our order. Often there was no one else outside and after ringing the bell five to seven times, we were able to speak to someone. In addition, months ago they had forgotten our chimichurri sauce and a vegan empanada. These things happen so we figured it was a one off experience and part of the growing pain of owning and operating a small business. Then a month of two ago, we placed a group order at 10:00 with my coworkers on a Thursday online for pickup at 12:55 PM. Google says they're open, their phone message says they're open, and the absolute kicker is that their online order page was also open. Unfortunately it seems that a person had called out sick and subsequently the store had forgotten to turn off their toast. I understand that their operation is small, but after that many months that incident became a tipping point for me to avoid ordering from here for a while. My wish is that as they grow, they can find themselves a more visible and permanent shop so they can address these issues. read more

I randomly stumbled upon Fonda Felix while looking for a parking spot in shopping center where Fonda Felix is located. There is an iPad out front that you order from. We ordered the chicken, beef, and pork empanadas. The dough in the empanadas was soft on the inside and cooked on the outside without being crunchy. The chicken, beef, and pork each had their own unique flavor and were absolutely delicious! I loved all 3 empanadas and wish I would have ordered their other flavors. These empanadas are some of the best I've had and would definitely come back here next time I'm in Santa Cruz! read more

I love empanadas, so had to make a stop here on our way to the beach, so I could try these savory treats. It was great to find easy free parking at the Swift Street Courtyard plaza, and the courtyard itself, shared among the different businesses here including Fonda Felix, a coffee shop, and more, was beautiful and spacious. Fonda Felix is like a ghost-kitchen, so they have a menu outside the door, then you ring a bell and they take your order. You can either take your food to-go or enjoy it in the aforementioned courtyard, so at least there is some outdoor seating for this eatery. When our order was ready, the worker found us in the parking lot, sitting in the shade under a tree, and he brought it out to us. He was so friendly the entire time he helped us, from taking our order, to wishing us a good day. We ordered four different empanadas - Peruvian Chicken, Spinach and Monterey Jack, Summer Squash, and Monterey Bay Fish and Fennel. I thought the latter was so unique, and it ended up being my favorite.. tender pieces of fish, wrapped in a warm pastry shell. It was better than I expected, even if the empanada crust didn't really stand out. The other three were just okay IMO. The earthy flavor of the Peruvian Chicken was too strong for my taste, and the veggie empanadas I tried were a bit too sweet, whether it was an added sauce or the caramelized onions, it just didn't appeal to me as much. But the quality of ingredients was great overall, so I can't complain too much, especially the fresh, perfectly spiced chimichurri sauce... sooo good! I really want to give this 5 stars, but not all of the empanadas were outstanding. Some were definitely more enjoyable than others and it was pricey considering we spent $50 ($44 something for the empanadas plus tip) for 2 people and I wasn't stuffed. We ordered 6 empanadas as well as the chipacitos. The Caribbean pork was one of our favorites as it worked well with the pineapple. The mesoamerican flavor was also one of my favorites as I really like plantains, but texturally there was not a lot of difference in that one but it was well filled. The Argentinian beef was my next favorite followed by the chicken. The squash and the spinach and Monterey Jack were just ok. The cheese balls were good, but I also think those are hard to get wrong. Glad I tried it, but not sure I would repeat since there are lot of food spots to try in Santa Cruz. I appreciated the blend of protein and vegetarian options. read more

Staff is so friendly when they come take your order. You can get them cold to heat up at home or warm so you can enjoy them there. There is a communal area a few steps away with tables if you want to sit and enjoy your food there. My all time favorite one is the Mesoamerica one. I love the sweet & savory flavor it has. My second favorite would have to be the peruvian chicken. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of there empanadas they are all very tasty. If you like beer humble sea brewery just a few blocks away also has them to eat while enjoying some beer. read more

My wife discovered Fonda Felix walking around while I was shopping at New Leaf, and a few days later, we carried home two each of a dozen of their Argentinian-style empanadas -- beef, pork, chicken, fish, and two different veggies. Each was nicely spiced, each very different from the other. There's no indoor or outdoor seating, only a door with a bell where you place your order. All are pre-made, and can be picked up cold to spend time in your oven at home, or hot to each on the spot. With our half-hour drive home, we chose the cold option. Warm-up instructions were simple and worked fine. We ordered in person, but could have easily done so online. The four left over from dinner that first night were just as nice the next. Baked shells were nice and tasty, but we would have preferred that the dough was about half as thick. We ran out of the very nice Chimichurri sauce that came with the pack of a dozen before finishing eight on that first night, so would strongly recommend opting for buying the 8 oz container on the menu. Note the current daytime-only hours. Service was fast and friendly. We look forward to the menu expanding. read more

We found a magical door to the land of delicious empanadas! Was in the area and saw this place kind of by accident. There's a little door with a menu on it and when I saw vegan empanadas we had to order a half dozen. The guy who helped us was super nice and they seemed very busy. I think you can preorder your food online it we only waited 5-10 minutes. Great experience empanadas were very flavorful and the sauce was excellent and fresh! The outdoor seating was perfect for us.
