I've been a patient of Doctor Dale fong for at least 30 years. Back then his father had the office in Stadium Mall and was the most convenient to our home in Aiea. He and his brother took over the elder Fong's practice when he retired and moved the offices to the Kapiolani office where they are still located. It's actually very convenient with parking in Cooke Street of in the building's garage. Parking is validated for two hours so it's less expensive than the quarter eaters on the street. I always break into a big grin when I walk through the door of the office. The same office lady is there from forever and very efficient albeit not very outgoing. I'll take efficient over pretty airhead any day. I always talk to her and try to get her to laugh which will eventually happen and gives me a sense of satisfaction. This is not your Costco optometrist, your appointment moves you from room to room in the office for different testing. A machine scan checking the health of your eyes by taking a blinding picture of the back if your eye. Another machine checking cataracts. Every test in kept in a file and reviewed with you so you can see the progression of your eye health. Doctor can see and will show you the effects of high blood pressure, high cholesterol. There is a licensed optician on site and you can buy your glasses there too. Not the most extensive selection but it works for most. I highly recommend this business for all Eyecare services. read more

I've been coming here for decades and love the amazing staff here that always tries to manage whatever is convenient for me and I really appreciate them. I was actually a patient of Dr. Rodney's father when I was in the 2nd grade. That was the beginning of eyeglasses. We progressed to contact lenses until Dr. Rodney's father passed away and I became a patient of Dr. Rodney. (He's a graduate of Iolani and Stanford.) The best things about Dr. Rodney are his patience, knowledge, and his ability to explain everything from options and how he analyzes the eye diagrams and comparisons from prior years. I feel like he truly is a partner in my health care and that I have a say in the direction of my future. For example, a big decision was when we decided that it was time for me to get lasik. My eyes were bad enough for the operation and he was confident that I would be able to endure the procedure. He was a great support and I really appreciate the time he took to reassure the wimp that I really am! So, if you need an eye care specialist, I highly recommend Dr. Rodney Fong. He keeps up with the latest techniques as he goes to the conventions and he's technology savvy. The office is clean - I watch him sanitize the machines after each use! Absolutely Not a good experience , the front office is snappy and rude and I felt that the exams were slightly aggressive due to eye soreness thereafter. UPDATE: I stand corrected. They have not improved. The front desk was so rude to me today that I demanded my medical information and told them that I will not return because they are and always have been RUDE. I would not wish to subject anyone to their treatment, so I highly recommend you not go here until they either fire the front desk clerks or give them a major attitude adjustment. I've been going to Dr. Dale Fong since 2005 and he is a great doctor. He always goes above and beyond, is constantly improving his techniques, and even makes sure I get the best price for my prescriptions. However, the front desk staff have no people or customer service skills whatsoever. They don't even say hi when you walk in. You just have to wait awkwardly while they shuffle through their things and finally rudely say to sit down. At one point it got so bad that they were blatantly rude, but they have "improved" over the years. I've been putting up with it and will continue to put up with it because Dr. Dale is worth it but I have to say they are terrible at people skills. They've only recently started using a computer to input appointments, send reminders, etc which is a Stark contrast to Dr. Dale who uses up to date technology. Which is laughable in my opinion. Other than that, there's a lot of parking, but the eye glass selection is lacking. read more

I went to this optometrist bc I needed new contacts and this was the closest eye center to me. The doctor was nice but the older, front desk lady was terrible. She couldn't call me about my appointment or to let me know my glasses were ready bc she "couldn't call long distance". I felt like I was talking to someone in another era. I went there bc they accepted my insurance, then after my visit she just handed me the insurance paperwork. They don't file insurance paperwork for you. Then when I go to pick out glasses, all of the glasses look like something from 1970's. The doctor was sweet, but I would find another optometrist that will file insurance for you and has a better selection of glasses. read more

Dr Rodney Fong is such an easy person to talk to. I felt as if I knew him forever. He is really smart and is able to explain medical concepts. He took the time to educate me on some exercise for my condition, nutritional supplements that actually do help with eye health, and the types of modern eyeglasses I could benefit from based on the distance of objects I need to look at during work. I've been going to Fong Eyecare Center for 3 years now - Dr. Dale is really wonderful. He is patient and takes the time to explain everything to me - I have a higher than normal risk for glaucoma in the future - and always lays out the best options. I have a problem with wearing contacts because my eyes are always dry and he's the first Dr I've had who has suggested daily throw-away contacts, which have been perfect for me. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I also like that they have their own selection of frames, which makes everything easier since they already have all of my insurance info on file. One of the best parts about this office is there is NO EYE PUFF test! Haha! I don't know about you, but I always HATED the eye puff test. Instead, they have a more up-to-date machine that eliminates the need to blow a puff of air into your eyes. Actually, from what I've seen, all of their machines are really tech savvy and modern (and clean!) The only reason I took a star away is because I almost always am unable to get through when I call their office. I usually get a busy signal (which is so 1990's lol!) and there is no answering machine to leave a message for a call-back, so then I have to go online and fill out an appointment request and usually wait for them to return my call. Dr.Rodney Fong is very up to date with the latest eye care technologie he recently went to Scotland to be trained on State of the art eye care equipment. Dr Fong was able to detect the cause of my vision decline when it went unnoticed by other doctors. I wanted another option aside from glasses to help me see and he prescribed contacts to me which allows me to see both near and far. This is magic to me ! I am very pleased with Dr.Rodney Fong's professional care and highly recommend him to anyone seeking eye care and eye wear.!!! read more

I Wish I could post this review with absolutely no stars, but I can't. Dale Fong does not deserve any stars! I was a patient for 28 years! I trusted him to care for my eyes. I went in for an annual eye exam and he found some inflammation inside both eyelids. He prescribed a "New formulation" of eye drops, Lotomax, and told me I could wear my contacts while using these eye drops. Boy, was he wrong! Apparently he did not do his research on this new formulation. According to the pharmaceutical company who makes these eye drops, clinicians are to "Advise patients AGAINST wearing contact lenses while on Lotomax therapy." Two weeks after initial therapy with Lotomax eye drops, which I found out later, is harsh steroid eye drops, I almost lost my vision. I woke up with the most horrible migraine, my vision was cloudy and all the straight lines I looked at were now waves. I saw Dale Fong for an emergency visit and he initially told me it was a migraine, but I never have migraines! I was referred to a specialist and told me I could wait a week to see him. Worried that I could loose my vision, I begged Dale Fong to call the specialist for me and get me in ASAP. I saw the specialist 2 days later. Over the course of 2 days, my vision worsened, I could not see the letters in the vision test chart, only a white box in the wall. The specialist told me I had severe inflammation in my retina and was prescribed 60mg of oral Prednisone. I was out of work for 2 weeks, saw countless specialists, took countless test, to include CT scans, and blood work. For 2 weeks, I could not see any fine details, I could not see my own reflection in the mirror, nor could not see any details of anyone's faces! After 2 weeks my vision improved. After 4 weeks, I lost 3/4 of my hair, and spent thousands of dollars to restore my vision. My Rheumatologist and new Ophthalmologist both agree that using the eye drops and wearing my contact lenses, as advised by Dale Fong, has left me with Uveitis. It's been 4 years, and I am still on Prednisone therapy, and will continue to be some sort of autoimmune suppression drug for the rest of my life! My Uveitis was caused by an extrinsic factor, using contact lenses with unnecessary steroidal eye drops, rather than an intrinsic health factor. my life has changed forever because of Dale Fong! I have documented my experience with Dale Fong and sent it in to my medical insurance company. The insurance company deemed my complaint a valid medical complaint and sent a letter to Dale Fong advising him to do the right thing and reach out to me. I have never heard from him. I spoke to a personal injury attorney who advised me a have a legitimate malpractice case, but with attorney fees, I would end up loosing more money than I have already lost to medical bills. I ran into Dale Fong one night shopping. At first, the sight of him made my bold boil. Then I decided I should confront him. After showing him pictures of my hair loss, and giving him details of my horrible experience, he wrote it off by saying, "That couldn't happen, that would be very rare," I told him I spend thousands of dollars because of his neglect of researching the dosing instructions for Lotomax eye drops. I told him that I thought about requesting help from him to cover my medical bills. He stated, "Oh I can't pay for your medical bills, it's illegal," it's not illegal, it would be admitting fault! He stated he knew someone sent a complaint letter to the insurance company, but didn't know it was me, what a liar! I did not tell him I sent a letter to my insurance company! He then had the audacity to tell me, "I want to help you, why don't you come back as my patient and I'll give you a discount on your eye glasses and a free bottle of vitamins." What an insult! I will never go back as a patient! PATIENTS BEWARE! MY VISION WILL NEVER BE THE SAME! I currently have black floaters caused by the inflammation that will never go away, I will never be able to wear contact lenses ever again, and I will always have medical appointments to monitor my condition. read more
