So a few months ago my computer glasses that I need for work broke so I tried calling my eye doctor to make an appointment to get a new set...the eye doctor that I've been seeing for almost 20 years, but...his number was out of service so I'm assuming he's retired. I haven't gone to see him in close to 4 years so I have no idea. In the search for a new eye doctor that was near me Downtown Vision came up and with really good reviews. Being the holiday season they were busy so it took a month to be able to get an appointment on my day off but it was well worth the wait. Dr. Chun and his wife Mia are terrific! They're both extremely personable and I felt welcomed from the moment I stepped into their office. I ended up getting a pair of progressive bifocal glasses that I can use for work and close reading. I told Dr Chun "I'm cured" and we continued to laugh after a fun visit with these blind eyes. Ok, so it has been a while since I have gone in for a eye exam. I have been wearing reader's, constantly, as glasses...basically. My vision has been so bad, I haven't been able to read my phone, a menu, or my computer at work. Jonathan and Mia Chun operate Downtown Vision, located on the ground floor of the Mauka tower at Pacific Guardian Center. A convenient location that I had passed by, and even visited 8+ years ago when it was under previous ownership...and I finally called to make an appointment. Mia was very helpful as I had questions about contact lenses and the time it may take to order glasses. She scheduled an appointment for me and shared details I would need to ask as follow-up questions with Dr Chun. The visit was easy, great in finding the right prescription, and even helpful in explaining my vision and what has happened over time. I was able to try contacts, which I have never done. Dr Chun put them in my eyes, which is very odd, lots of naturally instinctive blinking. Then he had me insert and remove them to ensure it was something I was able to do on my own. Before I left, I had an opportunity to also look at frames. They have a large selection which includes both designer and cost conscious options. I need a specific size, and Dr Chun was very helpful in pointing me in the direction of where those glasses were in each section. He has a great personality and even found a pair that he knew I would like and will be purchasing! I made the plans for the follow-up visits, both for frame purchase, and the contact lenses, since those need to be tested. When I got home wearing the trial contact lenses, I realized what I now look like up close. I have aged, and I guess I may have been saving money all this time not knowing. Mia and Dr. Chun run their buisness like I am family. I have had many eye doctors and been in as many clinics. Their shop on Downtown Honolulu is clean and spacious. And the opthamolgic care is head and shoulders above anything I have previously encountered. In addition, they have the best array of frames I have ever seen. I have a type of insurance that covers the frames but not just any frames, Quest frames. Discount frames for Quest patients but the choices are usually bordering on inexpensive and very limited. Not so with Downtown Vision. They have the best choices in the "qualifies for Quest" category. I have always been touched by the aloha spirit during my visits and would seriously go nowhere else. Incredible. Listen, I hadn't been to the eye doctor in probably half a decade. My vision hadn't gotten any worse in that time, but my insurance sure did better so I decided it was time to find an eye doctor. I was in search for one either by my home or in downtown so I could go in on a day that I was actually in the office. Low and behold, I get a response from my request on their website quick and easy. Set up an appointment the following week and was in the hot seat for a bit. Dr. Chun was actually able to diagnose something in my left eye that may or may not have been disclosed to me in the past, but it explained exactly why my vision in that specific eye is blurry. Not something we can fix through corrective lenses or surgery, unfortunately. About 2 weeks later I emailed him again to set up an appointment as my eyeline had gotten progressively more swollen and purple over 2-3 days. I didn't know what it was, but I knew I needed to get rid of it fast with another set of engagement photo sessions coming up. He prescribed me antibiotics per my request in which I supported with a warm compress 15 minutes, minimum twice daily. Low and behold, less than a week later, It's 95% recovered and we did our photoshoot with no issues. Top-notch service with casual, knowledgeable conversations about what he sees. Downtown Vision is a family business who take pride in providing great service. I have been seeing Dr. Chun for my annual eye exam for the past few years. Dr. Chun is very knowledgeable and will talk you through the entire process and give you points of what to look out for. I have a family history of glaucoma so he takes extra care to monitor for any signs. They're the best. My optometrist in Kaimuki would make me wait an hour after being seen. It was crazy & I just couldn't do 2 hour appointments when I had to get back to work. So I randomly walked into downtown vision because they were across from my work. AMAZING. After a very informative and helpful session, I got a new set that remedied my vision and strabismus. While visiting Honolulu from another island and taking care of some business downtown recently, I had a long overdue eye exam done with Dr. Jonathan Chun of Downtown Vision on Oct. 7, 2023. I had no difficulty in scheduling the appointment in advance with his wife Mia, and for once there wasn't any annoying paperwork to fill out once I arrived. He also accepts Medicare reimbursement, so the exam was very close to free for me. The ground floor, street-front practice was super easy to find, and as promised by its website, there was no overcrowded waiting room to deal with. Dr. Chun called me into the comfortable and not over-bright exam room on time, and I found him to be personable and friendly, but also very professional and "no nonsense" in his work. After the exam, he gave me the names of several doctors that I could consider for some follow-up cataract surgery that he strongly recommended based on the results. Since I was a first-time patient, I can't speak to anything beyond eye exams, but for that service I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Chun, especially for people working or living in downtown Honolulu. I found all the statements made on his firm's website to be accurate, so can't think of anything negative to say about his practice based on my one experience there. Doesn't feel like I'm going to a doctor. Feels like I'm hanging out with a friend who just happens to know a lot about eyes. Dr. Chun explains things in layman's terms without using medical words nobody knows and makes me feel comfortable in asking whatever questions I have. I've asked a handful of questions but I have yet to get an "I'm not too sure" or "let me get back to you." He knows the answers off the top of his head, no matter what the question is. I don't know about you, but to me that's a pretty solid level of knowledge that all doctors should have. Mia is also really great. Excellent experience with Dr. Chun who is friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. I visited when his wife was out of town so he was short handed and pulled in all directions when I was getting my exam. He was very apologetic about having to break away to take a call or address incoming customers. The eye exam was very thorough and he let me come back at the end of the day to get my eyes dilated. Recently went to Downtown Vision to get new glasses. The office staff is polite and friendly and very helpful. Dr Chun is particularly helpful and I found him to be the sort of person who would explain things and if he wasn't sure that you understood he'd explain it in a way that you personally could get it and to me that's not always so easy when it comes to medical things but he made it plain and I understood it well. They have a good selection of frames but you can use your old frames and they're cool with that. They don't try pitch you to get new ones. I have to give Dr.Chun and wife 5 Stars mainly because they're super down to earth and easy to work with. I don't really go get my eyes checked yearly as I should so when my eye sight starts to get kinda wonky that's my cue to make an appointment. Unfortunately for me I've been floating around between doctors because I have never really been satisfied with the service I've received in the past. That all changed when I found Dr. Chun. My inital visit was a breeze and he was super informative when I had brought up my concerns. And idk where the hell I've been but I mean I've never had an eye doctor custom bend my glasses to fit my weird shaped head lol like I was taken back by that. Im mostly Asian so of course I don't have a bridge to support most glasses and I usually have issues with fit and never did my doctors in the past offer to adjust the arms or bend the nose pads to fit perfectly. I had my new glasses adjusted at my optometrist on Saturday, but when I wore them at home, it was uncomfortable. It was hard to adjust them since I was wearing a mask. Wow, wow, wow! Dr. Chun is the very best Optometrist I've been to in my 30 years of contact and glasses use. Upon entering the office for my appointment, I was greeted with a temperature check and a squirt of hand sanitizer. The entire office is well sanitized and spotless. Dr. Chun is very attentive, professional, thorough, and extends his aloha and care with the highest level of service. My examination was little over an hour. He explained every process in detail and explained his diagnosis in a simple form to clearly understand. But the most important, after seeing 3 other doctors with my same concern. "I don't seem to see things at a distance". None of the other doctors changed my prescription in 10 years. His original diagnosis prior to my prescription recommendation was that I shouldn't be driving. Which I felt for many years but 3 doctors said I was fine. But with Dr. Chun's help, I CAN NOW SEE!!! I messaged them online and I received a response within the hour asking what time worked for me. I was able to get an appointment the next day, and Mia was really welcoming and took my information as soon as I walked in. So highly recommend this practice. It's a small practice (one doctor and one staff), so you get extremely personalized service. Feels like concierge medicine. Mia is extremely professional and organized and had all of my intake paperwork sitting in front of her when I arrived. Booking the appointment with her on the phone was also quick and easy, as was check-out/payment. Dr. Chun was awesome. Took a lot of time with me, explained everything very clearly, and was very clearly invested in making sure I got the perfect prescription. This was a completely different experience than my prior eye exams elsewhere that felt pretty rushed.
