I really needed a massage and I stopped by Jian Min because I've always seen it on my walks around Chinatown. This is located on the ground level and when you first walk in, it's very clean and relaxing. I did a walk in on the weekend and they were able to help me with a 60 min massage immediately. You need to pay for the service first and they're also cash only. They bring you to a room where it's pretty no frills, but the massage was amazing. My masseuse told me to tell her if she needed to change the pressure, and she was able to accommodate. She focused heavily on my neck and lower back, and she was so strong - in the best way because I like deep tissue massages. She spent a full 60 min with me and towards the end, she advised me to do cupping. I didn't see this as upselling - she seemed concerned that there was still tension. I did the cupping and she even mentioned that she was doing to do cupping all over my body instead of just my back because of the tension. DO NOT GO HERE. We chose this place because of the great reviews, but our experience was absolutely unacceptable. The business is cash-only, and they require you to pay before the massage. We booked a couples massage, and throughout the entire massage, the two masseuses were speaking to each other. At one point, someone actually walked into our room during the massage and simply said, "Sorry!" Given the extremely unprofessional experience, we decided not to leave a tip. The staff then yelled at us and refused to let us leave until we tipped. Fortunately, my fiancé was able to get us out of the situation. This was incredibly uncomfortable and, frankly, frightening. I do a lot of long distance running and I'm extremely picky with massages - when I move to a new area I'll try out 15+ parlors before settling on a place to go regularly. I can say without hesitation that Annie at Jian Min delivered the absolute best massage I've ever gotten - if any part of your body is in pain, this is the place to go. Annie is extremely skilled and made sure each area was truly 100% knot free before moving to other areas. I came in with a really messed up back, rotator cuff, and upper right arm and it became clear within 15 minutes that there's no knot she couldn't undo - and she made sure I was pain free before I left. That said brace yourself to be in a lot of pain. The massages work really well but they aren't exactly relaxing. Also, the space looks extremely dingy on the outside but is very clean and you'll get enough space when you're inside. This is definitely the worst experience I have ever had. Avoid this place at ALL costs! Here are some of the reasons why: My girlfriend and I wanted a couples massage. We called this place up for a reservation wanting the $60 massage, but when we got in there they immediately upcharged up for the $70 massage. Weird but Ok no big deal. The massage table is pretty short and awaits us with a paper sheet with a small towel. They start by having you get under the paper sheet. When they come in they aggressively rip off the paper sheet and throw a small towel on you. They do the entire massage under a small towel. The whole thing is just massively awkward. One of the messeuses comes 10 minutes late. She picks up her phone 4 different times throughout the course of the massage and starts yelling at various people in Chinese. The masseuse seems to be in a hurry so the rubbing agressive and causes Indian rug burn. The massage is done with the door open for various patrons to pass by and witness everything. They also have demands for a tip at the end, but didn't deserve it at all. Please save your money. read more

***WARNING FOR FEMALES*** My neck is killing me again, and I was considering coming back to jian min because it's where I had one of the better massages so far in Boston. However, something felt off, and I'm glad I did my due diligence on Yelp... When I showed up at jian min, I made it very clear that I needed work on my neck, and that's where the masseur worked his magic mostly. The last 5 minutes or so, he moved down my glute and legs, which in a massage setting, I wouldn't normally question. In this case, however, I wasn't sure if I was being groped the way he squeezed the areas just below my bottom. Reading previous comments from sisi and yuxuan confirm my suspicions. I've had male and female masseuses in the past no problem. This man (I'm assuming it's the same Mr. Li) is preying on clients through his practice/business. His actual massage techniques and skills are probably 5 star, which is why I considered returning despite an initial gut feeling about the guy. But no 'star' rating can reflect your feeling violated and generally unsafe. So far, that's 3 females who have commented specifically about this issue on a business review platform. It's unfortunate, gross, disappointing, exhausting - you name it, so I hope people (male or female) looking for information on jian min are warned and choose not to support it. read more

My friend and I stumbled in here after a long day of walking and some bubble tea. This place was better priced than other places I saw on yelp - $40 for a 1 hour foot massage ($30 for 30 minutes). They also have other full body options I'll be excited to try another time. The place is a little quiet and it's not luxurious but it gets the job done. The massage was amazing and painful in exactly the right ways. One of the better massages I've had in Boston (and I've been to a wide range of places too!). The idea (I'm agnostic as to whether this is real or not) is that the nerves of your body all connect to your feet, so foot reflexology helps to work out problems with your whole body. They first soak your feet in a hot tub of water, then the massage happens with lotion (so good!!) and then they wipe your feet off with a comforting warm towel. They top it off with a small bottle of water and some candy afterwards. My friend and I couldn't speak Chinese, but everything was ok and chill. It felt so refreshing and I'm glad my friend and I took a chance on this place! I don't know how it compares to the many other places in the area, but this place should at least be on the radar. read more

I had a pinched nerve between my neck and left shoulder making it hard for me to breathe. I walked in without an appointment hoping they could help and Mr. Li was really great! He massaged me for an hour then did ten minutes of cupping. I had never done cupping before so I was kind of dubious, but after the hour the tension and pinching was significantly relieved. He did explain to my husband and I that I have a lot of tension, which is causing the pinching and that a 2 hour session would be best, but we didn't have enough time. Looks like The place has been renovated recently - new wooden floor, new extension and neat newly organized spaces. I made an appointment with the owner Ah Heung and she was so awesome. She used just the right amount of force and pinpointed all the problem area at my neck and shoulder. She then gave me a full body massage and identified old injuries in my lower left calf without me telling her. I was impressed. I went here for the first time last week on a whim because I was looking for a place that offers cupping and was affordable. I scheduled a one hour massage for $60 plus cupping, which is an additional $10. It's in the heart of chinatown and kind of hard to find but it's under a green awning and is downstairs. When I got there I was asked to pay first which I thought was kind of odd but whatever. I was brought to a room and told to undress - instead of a big sheet to cover up with there was only a towel, which was also odd and slightly uncomfortable but again, not the biggest deal in the world. Jian came in and started working on my back/shoulders and was talking to me throughout - he is the cutest, sweetest man ever! He was asking me for help with English and asking the English words for certain things, which I didn't mind. The massage overall was great and he was very nice and polite. About halfway through we discovered some serious pain in my left leg, something I didn't even know I had but it was to the point that I was screaming every time he touched it. He told me I need another 30 minutes to work on my leg, and it was clear that I really did need it, he wasn't just trying to get more money out of me. So I agreed and he spent the next 45 minutes working on my leg - adding oil and heat and really working it until the pain subsided. He got out his phone in order to translate what my condition was, and used it to tell me I have sciatica - which upon researching I definitely have. Then we did the cupping, which is awesome in my opinion. Overall, I felt like he really helped and I feel much much better now. He did a great job and it was extremely affordable. I checked out Jian Min after seeing all its 5-star reviews. I feel bad for breaking the streak, but unfortunately I did not get Mr. Li. I had one of his female associates for a 60 minute deep pressure massage. As an aside, I found it interesting that there is a $10 up-charge to get deeper body work. I was led to a very nice and clean therapy room. One should undress down based on comfort level. A fare warning is that the bodywork entails the use of baby oil, so it is best to be as little dressed as possible. My massage therapist did not speak any English and I did not speak the Chinese dialect that she speaks. So the session made for a very interesting one. She was good during parts of the session but was not on others. Where she was not good was where she didn't seem to really apply much pressure, or skipped over where most of my tightness was (neck and upper back). Overall if I had to grade this particular therapist, I would rate her a "C". Her technique and skill is not of high caliber. If I were to come back, I need to make sure I get an appointment for Mr. Li. Or, if not, I'd stick with getting foot reflexology. read more

Mr. Li helped me on a massage for an hour and I got so much better right after. I was able to move my head and back. 2 days later, I was fully recovered. This is a pain relief center instead of a spa. If you are looking for a place with some massage oil and light touching, it is not the right place for you. Best massage...I feel like I've never had a real massage before coming here! It wasn't a massage where I was gently stroked while sniffing lavender and eucalyptus and listening to the strums of a harp. This was a real, get in there deep, and loosen up knots I never knew I had kind of massage. I got the regular 60 minute massage, but then upgraded to 90 because clearly there was a lot more work she could do. I also did cupping for $10 extra dollars. I wish I had the courage like Yuxuan (the comment below about the inappropriate touch). The exact same thing happened to me. I had been a regular at this place for about a year and had Mr. Li before, so I was in total shock when this happened. All my previous visits were great; that's why I kept coming back. However during this particular visit (back in May 2017), Mr Li inappropriately touched my breast. I had massages before (Message Envy, other Chinese parlors etc.) and have had male masseurs as well. I know what to expect. During this visit, Mr. Li gradually touched and fondled my breasts as he worked on the upper arms. At that time, I felt weird and violated; but I was so confused as to what was happening ( it was uncomfortable but this had never happened before, I had him as masseur before, was I overthinking/oversensitive?) so I didn't say anything. I haven't been back since. I was just randomly browsing Yelp and saw Yuxuan's comment and it gave me the courage to speak up now. I wish I said something right there/ right then , or at least told others about it to warn other girls. Please beware of this place! What a shame! I tried this place out for the first time last week and then returned for a second session this week. Stephen worked on my feet and calves both times. I work out a lot and walk a ton of miles so my calves and feet are in sort of a permanent cramped state. During a recent massage (at my regular place), my masseuse suggested that my tight calves were partly due to the bad state of my feet and suggested reflexology. I looked up this place in Chinatown and decided to try it. The first session was ridiculously painful as he worked the bottom of my feet and the front and sides of my calves, which had been neglected through decades of working out, cycling, running, and walking. However, a day later I felt like my legs were 20 pounds lighter and my feet, which chronically hurt, were now feeling amazing. I went back to Jian Min again today to get a deeper calf and leg massage and once again it was painful but I already am feeling like the calves & quads are much better. I will be a regular here and will bring my wife next time as she's been complaining about her feet lately. Great 50 dollars.
