Something always a bit off-putting at Food Lions. They never look completely clean and prices always seem a bit higher.

I have resisted the outcry from family and friends that "Kroger S*cks" for years. But I have to…read moresay that at least at this location, I have about had my fill. Today was typical -- I went in on a Friday midday with 10 items on my list. Kroger was completely out of two of them going into a weekend. I would usually (and have for years) just shrug. But this is getting to be very very common. I always end up having to go to another store to complete my shopping. This week is was a specific cat food they carry and brown sugar. Twice lately it has been all the milk. MILK. ALL THE MILK. Seems like every time we go to this store we have to make time to go to another store to fill in. Last week all the eggnog in the case was curdled and separated. All of it. Clearly a refrigeration problem. But there it sat, available for sale. So back to the stock-outs. It is always something. It has gotten to the point that, if I have to go somewhere else to buy things that Kroger doesn't have, I might as well start there. So it's not just losing the $2.25 on brown sugar, the tipping point will have us shifting our primary shopping to Food Lion. Or Publix. Or Trader Joe's. Or Walmart. Or Wegman's. Or Lidl. Or Aldi. Or Tom Leonard's. Or Ellwood Thompson's. My point is, Kroger is too comfortable telling the customer to "buy it or leave it." It may be the fault of the buyer in Cincinnati under-purchasing, or the store manager for under-ordering, or the profit plan for not hiring enough staff to get stuff off pallets in the back. Doesn't matter to the customer. You're out of it. We moved all our prescriptions away from Kroger pharmacy years ago due to the long lines and stock outs. It may be time to do so for groceries.

Here is what this, or any other Publix in the area, ISN'T…read more It isn't cheaper than Kroger. Or Food Lion. Or any other local grocer. Sorry, the market basket or whatever is used to compare is.... selective. It isn't particularly good in terms of ready to eat food, which is one of the corporation's selling points. A recent visit to the sandwich / hot food / feed me area went something like this: Me -- I'd like a XXX sandwich (from the menu board.) Employee -- oh we don't have that. We've never had that. They don't send us the stuff to make it. It's just on the board. It isn't particularly awe inspiring in terms of its baked goods or other convenience items. The bakery stuff is equal to Kroger, no better. And the salad bar, goddess help me, is seldom stocked up, and the soups are either empty or burned up on the table. So what does Publix have that brings me in? A half-decent staff in the pharmacy. This alone stole about 30% of my food shopping from Kroger, that doesn't G.A.S. about pharma customers. I say "half decen"t only because there is a fair lack of follow up at least at this Publix if a doc's office doesn't call back with a refill or a drug is not in stock (no calls to the customer to tell them to try elsewhere. DRUGS, people. This ain't a bagel. We literary need them to live.) Also, some good BOGO deals on regular stuff. And importantly, very few stock outs on grocery items. They carry, them, they have them. No other local chain is that dependable. But overall the prices are high. So Publix will never get the bulk of our grocery biz.

A sub section, hot food like chicken, Mac, potato's, and etc, a salad bar,and take and go with prepackaged salads and entrees. The salad bar had a decent selection, but it still felt like something was missing. There were no lids for the salad dressing on the bar. But a nice lady from the hot food section helped me find something to put it in. The strawberry blueberry salads were only $5 which was a good deal and they were fresh. The chicken tenders were almost $10 per lb. That felt kinda pricey to me. So we got wings because there was a better deal. The staff was friendly and the store was clean and well stocked. My only complaint is some aisles seemed to small for 2 people to pass by with a cart. The water aisle specifically. I literally had to move over so someone could get by. That was kinda weird. It's a very nice store with a variety of things. They also have a store card for savings. I'd certainly shop here again. Check them out.

Pretty wild that Jen has made it to management.
