Poke... yuuumyyy

Great service! Food is fresh, specially the poke! Prices are not as expensive as you were told. Very similar to California. Ample parking and close to where we were staying. Extremely convenient. Cakes and fruits were a nice surprise. Very friendly staff and welcoming ambiance.

I now have changed my tune since my last review. I like being able to purchase unique specialty items and select deli meats and cheeses. The new General Manager works hard Doing everything; he helps in the deli, bakery and even produce and really has tried to keep spirits up. Unfortunately, employees are dropping out and there is a stream of new hires. Hopefully, time will tell if this store will survive.

Every time I come to the big island, we always adventure out up north, up to Waimea. This particular Foodland seems to have a lot of amazing local items as well as some mainlander things such as particular cheeses and cottage cheese that my mom loves! Lol. I especially loved the number of fresh poke that was made in the back by the butcher/Fishermans section! I have a handful of food allergies, and take a morning smoothie every day for breakfast that requires me to have organic, wild berries, and I was lucky enough to find them here! This particular, Foodland also has a number of great hot deli items like fresh daily made spam musubi that my son loves, and a number of different local breads, like taro, guava, and Ube bread for sale!! There's always a handful of employees working, and I like all of their seasonal items, as well as what seems to be an Italian section of the store with a lot of pasta, Turkish delights and jarred sauces. Lol I always make my marinara sauce from scratch, but my teenage son is lazy and loves vodka marinara sauce! Lol, the size of this particular Foodland is perfect and they have everything spaced out very well! I will be back next time I go to the big island!hee.

Large size parking lot in a shared plaza. This location was well stocked and had friendly folks behind the poke counter.

Yay! Found a Foodland on this island!! This is always our must go-to place for the poke deli anytime we're visiting one of the islands. So far, all of them we've gone to have been consistent and we have always had happy bellies after eating here.

Lots of great poke choices at this Foodland. Not only were they good, but the variety was so fun to choose from.

If you want to buy groceries vs eating touristy food, avoid the natural tendency to shop at a familiar name: Safeway. Alternatively, shop where the locals do, and go to Foodland. Foodland has a lot of things locals are looking for, especially poke! They offer so many kinds of poke it took me five pics to get most of them. Some unique ones were white crab, snow crab shoulder, clams & mussels. The poke is not as good as Umeke's or Da Poke Shack in Kaikua-Kona, but its pretty good considering you can buy all your groceries here too. I always stay in Waikoloa on the Kohala Coast (western, and sunny side of the Big Island). This Foodland is in Parker Ranch about 30 min North, but there is also a smaller Foodland in the Mauna Lani Resort, which is much closer. BTW, get a Maika'i (good) card and get discounts and points towards deals.

Great supermarket in Waimea. Clean, well equipped store. Really tasty porkey stuffs and other marinated raw seafood, they are soo good! You can find almost everything in this market, Japanese things, freshly made sushi, or bbq meat or bake goods. On the way to Hilo from Kona, stop here, get some stuffs for the day. Really worth it. Actually there are not many groceries in Kona. This place is a gem.

The poke is the bomb (my son's words). Best poke on the island other than Da Poke Shack. Great selection as well.

I opted for the premium fresh ahi tuna Hawaiian style which is $20 for a pick 2 poke bowl. I ended up choosing that and the spicy salmon. Loved the flavor of the spicy salmon which tasted like a gochujang seasoning. I'm not a huge fan of mayo in poke so this was great for something spicy without the creaminess of mayo. Ahi was great as well, the Hawaiian flavor is on the lighter side but it did taste very fresh. It's on the pricer side for supermarket sushi but it's definitely better than what I usually see in the states.

We arrived early after maybe 10am. That means like should be fresh, right? The gentleman serving poke was wonderful! Very kind and easy to talk to. He was very patient waiting for us to make a decision. Once, we were ready to check out, only self check-out was available. This was fine. No big deal. We also purchased fried vinegar chicken wings (which was really good). They've made portions smaller but it's ok. Still worth the money. Now, for the poke itself. It was not good. I couldn't figure out why and husband said it did not seem fresh. That's it. The texture or flavor was not what it usually is. It was ok but they have served better. I have been craving this poke for weeks too. It was so bad that I just didn't feel like stopping by another day. Maybe, next time we visit, the poke will be fresh. Keep in mind, this is one of the only grocery stores around this area so be prepared for some very high prices on water and snacks. Convenient items needed are very pricey as well. Excellent customer service will make up for all those things though. I'm sure I will be back. Oh, and I cannot forget my butter mochi. Another craving I get in Hawaii. I will wait to hit the grocery stores for this and it never disappoints.

Well that ain't happening here. Stopped here to grab a few basics. Shelves are almost empty and selection sparse. But the kicker was the attitude of the woman behind the counter. Surly, snappy and went out of her way to be unpleasant. We all have bad days but rolling your eyes because I ask for sauce on the side instead of on top for a poke bowl? Arguing with me because I want to buy twelve Sparkling Ice drinks? Another eye roll when we added another popsicle to our items before she was finished ringing up all our items! I should have just left everything on the counter and walked out. Instead I spent $100 and got tons of attitude. Couple days later I needed more ice. Go back here? Heck no. I drove to Foodland where the folks couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. Our Hawaii visit was wonderful and we experienced the Aloha Spirit every where. Just not here.

Kamuela Liquor Store has been in business for over 80 years, the signage on the glass window has 78 years but I confirmed with the kind lady staff that helped me twice this past Saturday, is family owned liquor store located in Kamuela on Hawaii Belt Road, parking is next to the store which is a great thing and offers an impressive selection of wines, spirts, sake, and craft beers, they have a unique offering of cheeses, meats, olives, snacks, some groceries and dips. Staff was very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable with my questions on wines and recommendations. They also have weekly wine/sake tasting on weekends. I usually stop here to grab my alcohol for the hotel stay and I saw some great deals, close out deals. I purchased 4 bottles and went back to grab a few more bottles, before we drove back to Hilo, during my most recent visit. Luckily the 6 bottles made it back to Oahu safely. It was such a great deal, a close out deal at $6.99, the only regret is not purchasing the last 6 bottles that were left. It was an Oregon wine which I always wanted to try when I was @ Portland but didn't have the chance to.
