I received an automated e-mail right away confirming the order, and it advised that I'd get another e-mail when my order was ready for pickup. Well, after three days of no updates, and my order status showing as "processing", I called the Portland store to get an update. The person I spoke with said the order was ready for pickup, and had been. He also apologized for the "miscommunication". When I stopped in to pick them up, the employee fetched them for me, and confirmed what was in the bag. All told, I was in and out in probably three minutes. The employee was prompt, but not notably friendly. The store itself is pretty large, and appears to have a good selection. There's also a running track inside that allows shoppers to try running shoes and give them a good workout. This is probably the reason that the shoes I picked up weren't exactly in brand-new condition. The soles were visibly dirty, there was a fair amount of debris on the sides, and there were more than a few hairs in the box. This was very disappointing, and I probably should have checked their condition while I was still in the store instead of waiting until I got home. Parking is TERRIBLE...it's all street parking, and the area is extremely busy. This store also serves beer, which seems like an extremely bizarre thing.

They asked a few questions to figure out what I was looking for and what I had worn before, and then promptly brought out multiple options to meet that criteria. They don't pressure you into sales, and they give you plenty of time to try things on and walk around with them (including on an in-store treadmill). While the prices are maybe 2-3 times as expensive as what you could get for a cheap knockoff on Amazon, it feels good to support a local business and have guidance in choosing the right shoe for you. The store has a rewards program, and they plan various run clubs for the community.

I've always wanted DC's, but my mammoth feet have always been deprived of their awesomeness. The employees were friendly and helpful. I love the rapport they have built with each other. Hearing them playfully insult each other made me chuckle. They did say there we going to be selling clothing soon. It's a small place, so I'm not sure how great of a selection they will have. She openly talked down to her employee over questions about sizing and pricing, which was uncomfortable to witness. When she took over, I learned that customers aren't allowed to browse or try on shoes without her supervision. The experience quickly became tense. Every question seemed to annoy her, and I couldn't wait to leave. The shoes are exceptional--the best I've seen in person--but the atmosphere was so unpleasant that I was relieved to escape when another customer arrived. I may try another location next time I'm in Oregon, hoping for a warmer experience. If you go, go for the shoes--and bring a thick skin.
