Foot Traffic has a "dividends" rewards system. When you shop you earn a certain amount of $ on your account. Once a year in February they give you that $ to spend in store. Because I had purchased two pairs of shoes from them recently, I had ~$20 in dividends to spend. So when I was near this downtown location, I stopped in to see what I could get. While of course this is a way to get you back into the store to spend money, there was no pressure of what to buy. Staff was super helpful in pointing me to items that would be fully under the dividend amount and therefore totally free. For the amount I had, this was primarily socks or sunglasses. I came to try Topo Magnifly 5 with 0 mm drop. I walk 5 miles daily around Portland on concrete so I want a shoe that's easy on old creaky senior knee joints. Through the years I've worn Altra (also available here) the past decade. Topo and Altra have similar wide toe boxes. Topo fits a little bit snugger in the heel, which I like. I bought the Topo. I came in looking for 4mm drop sneakers for over pronation with a large toe box. I live downtown and walk everywhere so my shoes need to hold up to several miles of urban hiking per day. Dan was very knowledgeable about running shoes and what was in stock. He was able to suggest a shoe and order it in my size from another Foot Traffic location. When I came back in to try on the shoes in my size they were too small. There was one pair left in the next size up. The person who assisted me that day (I didn't get her name) assured me that pretty much everyone who works there is a runner, so they know you have to wear a shoe outside for a while to know how well it fits you. She said that's why there is a policy where you can return the shoes within 60 days, even if you can tell they have been worn outside. She also gave me a 20% discount for the color being out of season (I like bright colors so that was an added bonus)! I'm glad I was able to try this pair of shoes because they ended up being more comfortable than I expected. I might not have made the commitment to buy without the reassurance that I could return them if they didn't work out. I will be coming back whenever I need sneakers. My 80 yr old uncle was visiting from out of town in dire need of some Brooks shoes (his new Keens were turning on him and causing foot pain, so he wanted to go back to his trusty Brooks). Forgetting name of the young guy helping us out, but he was really great. Knew his Brooks well, was empathetic and skillful helping my uncle try on shoes, troubleshooting a medical issue with his toe. My feet are a little messed up so I need to try several styles in order to find a good fit. I am so pleased with my experience at Foot Traffic and the level of service and attention I was given is totally unmatched! I originally came to the NE location to pick up my bib for the Bridge to Brews race; when there, I began looking at shoe options as I needed a new pair of running shoes and they were offering 10% off to race participants. They were so helpful and when they didn't have one of the shoes I wanted to try on in my size, they sent for it to arrive at the downtown location as that was the more convenient location for me to attend. They called me promply when my shoe had arrived and I arrived at the downtown location to receive such an overwhelming level of expertise and attention I couldn't believe it. The girl there grabbed at least a dozen pairs of shoes for me to try on, and when I mentioned i used super feet she even swapped out the insoles for me in every single pair so I could feel them with the insoles of choice. She then had me run in every single pair and watched my stride and gave her recommendations. I left with a pair of Asics Kayanos; unfortunately, on my first run in them I experienced shin pain which I had never had before. I put my old shoes back on and didn't experience the pain so I figured it must be something with the new shoe. I called them and they said I should return to the store and they'd be happy to exchange them for me. I came back to the downtown location and we determined that while my stride looked good in the shoe, it was possible that because I had been running on used shoes for so long that I was just not used to such a high level of structure; so we found a pair of Brooks that had a little less rigidity and I fell in love! She exchanged the shoes for me and I was able to use the store credit (as the new shoes were significantly cheaper) to buy a new pair of superfeet insoles - she even recommended to me that I could buy a larger pair of insoles and just trace them with the sole of the shoe and cut them to the exact size I needed, which worked great! I'm now several runs into my new Brooks shoes and it's like running on air. I have zero pain when I run and I love how they feel! I needed new running shoes because I'm doing the Dublin rock and roll marathon in August, so I decided to get fitted here. I would have given them 5 stars, unfortunately, the first salesclerk at the store that tried to assist me didn't seem interested in helping me. Maybe he was just tired! I don't know, but I'm glad another person took over. She answered all my concerns and was more than helpful. To make sure I get the perfect running shoes that would prevent slippage, she made me run on the treadmill. I ended up purchasing a pair of Nike Zoom, and I'm actually quite happy with them. I'm all about getting the perfect running shoes that give the perfect cushioned ride because I don't want to get blisters when I do the marathon. I've had them for about a month now, and my feet feel very secure and in place when I run. I'm glad I bought them plus I saved money! There's no sales tax in Portland. I came here to pick up my race materials for the Fanconi Anemia Valentine's Run/Walk this past winter, and started looking at shoes. I've had a really difficult time finding sneakers that don't press against the bunion on my right foot or angle my big toe in awkwardly. (Pro tip: don't wear heels for extended periods of time, as they really can deform your joints!) One of the ladies helped me find a shoe brand that I hadn't heard of before--Altra--which specifically makes shoes that have a generous toe box, allowing enough room for the phalanges to spread. She was very helpful and friendly, and I decided to try the shoes. I even got a discount on them because race participants got 10% off. Thankfully, I was able to get through the race without inflaming my bunion! It's now been 6 months since I started wearing the Altras, and the condition of my foot has improved significantly. The inflammation around my joint seems to be gone and the bunion doesn't stick out as much as it used to. I'm no longer limping at the end of workouts or long walks. I'm so grateful for the personal service from Foot Traffic and the perfect shoe recommendation they gave me, which I haven't received from any of the mall or discount stores where I used to buy shoes. I just started running on a regular basis, and I hurt my foot by running on concrete with shoes that didn't offer enough protection. A friend pointed me here, and boy am I glad I went! I was greeted immediately upon entering the store by the staff, and browsed around for a bit before being offered help. I explained my situation, and the male staff member said he would grab a few shoes for me to try on and then filmed me running in some of them on a treadmill to assess my gait. Based on that, he offered me a range of shoes in many colors and held friendly conversation with me. He patiently brought me out about ten pairs of shoes total to try on and let me jog in each one on the treadmill, and answered all of my questions thoughtfully and clearly. I left the store with a pair of shoes that helped me walk comfortably on my irritated foot, and I cannot wait to go for a run in them tomorrow! I was pleasantly surprised as to how patient my sales rep was with me. I'm pretty new to this running thing and she was willing to share her runner tips with me while she gave me a wide variety of shoes to try on and test. I really wanted to like this store and make it my regular stop for running gear, but I just couldn't...it's not a "one stop shop" for all things running. Pros: - Large selection of socks, sports bras, and running shoes - Treadmills so you can try new shoes out before you buy them and they can observe you running in your old shoes to suggest which brands/styles to try - RUN Oregon gear (you know, the outline of the state of Oregon with the word RUN in the middle or 13.1 and 26.2) Cons: - Food selection (gus, chews, etc) is extremely small compared to REI and Fit Right NW - did not have the products I care for (ie Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chews) and the price of CLIF shotbloqs was over $1 higher than REI ($3 each at Foot Traffic) - Tiny selection of rain jackets (and other key wardrobe pieces) for women Since the two items in the Cons list are extremely important aspects for running and far outweigh the Pros, I can only give it two stars, considering it is not likely I will go back. IF I return here, it will be to buy Brooks shoes and only because I get a discount with the tri club. Or maybe after I survive my first marathon and earn the right to wear a 26.2 shirt. read more

I've had never been to a shoe store that had high quality running shoes and sales people that knew about shoes and running. number one: all the shoes are high quality and made for runners--nothing that you will get at big box stores. the sales guy first had me run on a treadmill and recorded my foot strikes on an Ipad. He saw from that what type of shoe I would need. Gave me 3 different running shoes of that type that were different and had me run on the treadmill to try them out. All the shoes were high quality and i got the best pair for me. Went in today with ancient shoes and bad foot pain. Nico greeted me, checked out the wear patterns on my old shoes, and did a gait analysis with their in-store treadmill and an iPad program. After determining the type of shoe I need, he dealt with my pickiness about look/style, and found some shoes that fit both requirements. However, after walking downtown for almost 4 miles in them, I could tell they were a little too roomy in the front, and I felt the arch support wasn't what it needed to be. I went back, and Nico spent another chunk of time with me to get another pair of shoes that met my pickiness requirement and felt great on my feets. Thank you Nico! Aside from that personalize service, I can also say that Foot Traffic has seriously great return policies and also runs (heh) a great community running program.
