I think there are enough reviewers out there that only leave 1-star reviews as punishment for a business doing them wrong...This is not the case for Halo Shoes. I am a California resident and after only visiting this business once, they have left a memorable experience with me. My wife told me about a pair of Red Wing shoes she saw in the store but we never got around to picking them up later in our trip. After returning to California, I called up the store to see if the shoes were still available, and to my surprise (because they were on sale at a VERY good price) they where. The salesperson I spoke to offered to mail them to me at the price we saw and even sent them with free shipping. When I received the shoes I had them delivered to my work so that my wife would not find them as I am planing on giving them to her for Valentines day. I did not think anything of them until just the other day when I said i better check them out. When I opened up the box, to my surprise I saw the wrong color boots. After making a quick call to the store, Nicole apologized for the trouble ( even though I think the fault was on both of us at the time of order) and quickly got the right color in the mail, and offered to reimburse me for the return shipping cost. Not only did Nicole not have to do this (because the receipt clearly had their return policy printed right on it, and I chose not to open the box when it initially arrived), but she even price matched the boots back down to their sales price. This company clearly understands how valuable their customers are, and uses this to differentiate themselves from other larger chains and department stores. If I lived in Portland, I would make it a point to try and do as much shopping here as I could to support this business as it is clear they care about delivering a great experience. Now... I just hope my wife does not see this post before Valentines day. read more

A shoe store with great shoes, and it gets better. The store looks boutique, but the people working there are totally unpretentious. It's like shopping with your best friend from high school! Don't worry about what you're wearing when you walk in. Just browse, ask questions and have fun shopping! The store was busy on Saturday when we walked in. The two saleswomen apologized out loud to everyone and efficiently got to all the requests. They know a ton about the lines they carry, how well the shoes last, and how to best take care of them. Great first-time experience. A friend who has kept Halo in good business over the years dragged me in there to help evaluate a pair of sale boots she was considering. I am not usually a luxury shoe shopper, so did not intend to fall in love with said boots and wind up splurging on a matching pair. But that is what happened. Ways that Nathan, the owner, made my day in the process: * He sat with us and chatted, addressing every concern as I weighed the purchase for an inordinate amount of time (because I am picky like that) * He emailed to let me know they were done being carefully and successfully stretched (because it was the last pair and perhaps a half size too small) * He let me use his stockroom to slip on a pair of jeans I had with me to be sure they'd fit down inside * He offered good tips on storage and leather care Nathan's attention, service, and generosity was above and beyond - for 50% off sale boots nonetheless. I might not have gotten quite the red carpet treatment if I hadn't been there with a regular Halo-holic, but either way, it made us both feel great and was much appreciated. They are hands down the nicest shoes I've ever owned, and it was the best shoe store experience to go with them. read more

I am a designer shoe fanatic. Most of my shoe collection originated from Halo. Oh and bags too oh my! I an always surprised when travelling to other cities that no other stores (exception for Barney's NY and bergdorf goodman !) (sorry Ped Seattle) get it just right as Halo always does! Oh wow you guys, I can't believe there aren't more rave reviews for Halo. It's the best shoe store in town. Period. I mean it. The shoes are incredible. They carry Cordani, Costume National, Cydwoq, and Dries Van Noten among others and basically they're all beautiful and incredible. And they carry beautiful handbags and the store is cute but understated and they do have a really good sale rack. Not that I've ever actually bought anything there. I mean, if I could manage to grasp the concept of saving money, I'd be there in a jif, but as it stands, nothing from Halo has graced my closet. That being said, it is expensive, but not THAT expensive for beautiful handmade shoes. I love you Halo. read more

Halo has amazing shoes and is conveniently located nearby. This is a must shop boutique carrying designers that aren't represented elsewhere or are underrepresented. Love my Cydwoq boots!!!!!! The staff are very friendly and helpful. They also love shoes, you can tell. If you are lucky you will find the most perfect pair of shoes, in you size, on the fabulous sale rack. Though I haven't been to other shoe stores in Portland yet (live in the Bay Area), I must say that I'm impressed with what I found in Halo Shoes. Pricey? The majority of my shoes have been purchased at halo(mostly on sale). I've been a loyal customer for 10 years and not only am I able to pound the streets of Portland in 10 year old shoes and boots that keep keep getting better with age (when cared for) - people often ask me if I'm wearing something new. I am very particular about my shoes. Ask anyone. And it's been a long while since I purchased two pair in one sitting. This occurred last week at Halo. They've got beeeautiful, well-made (and therefore comfortable) shoes by designers you won't find in department stores... Shoes to be admired, as well as worn. Shoes that are classic, go with anything, and will last for several seasons. Shoes you pet like a puppy or a kitten. Shoes you set on your bedside table so you can wake up to them (at least for the first couple of weeks). Go buy some shoes. P.S. Their sale prices are excellent. read more

they carry the most luxurious brands like Fiorentini+Baker, Chloe, Marc Jacobs, Campomaggi bags and my personal favorite A.S.98. AS98 is a brand that i find it hard to find anywhere given that it's not in any of the major department store. Extremely well made leather and lasts forever. Halo Shoes has great stylish selections. Welcoming staff. Price is pretty spendy but they are pretty much selling at the original price. And those shoes rarely go on sale all that much anyways elsewhere.... if you're looking for unique, high quality, extremely soft and durable leather shoes/bags. this is your place. read more

This is the best shoe store in Portland. I never leave with less than 2 pairs, sometimes 5! The service rocks and I get a heads up when a particular style I like will be in stock. This is one of the few upscale shoe stores in Portland with excellent customer service a knowledgeable staff and a decent return policy. So if you get buyers remorse they will give you your money back if it's less than 7 days. Most places only offer store credit. read more

Have bought shoes here before, and been very satisfied with service and price. My latest visit to buy a pair of Red Wings for a friend who was with me, was a poor one. Why do brick-and-mortar store employees keep sending customers to the internet? If they carry a brand, is there a reason that they can't order a shoe in a specific size? I like going in to shop at Halo, but now they have trained me, I will find what I like there, and then buy it online. When they go out of business, I will have to find another shop to "showroom" my shoes. Hey Halo, get a clue, I bet you could double your sales if you learned how to close a sale. Contrary to previous reviews this is not the best shoe store Portland. I wish I had a suggestion of what was better, but this was not that amazing. Perhaps I went in with high expectations, but the service sucked. I understand that the store is trying to carry exclusive labels, hard to find designers. They had some great designer brands; such as Dries Van Noten, Fiorentini + Baker, Costume National, and Repetto, but the selection was limited. When I inquired if they carried Chie Mihara, the snoody sales associate snorted that hey don't carry the brand, claiming it has been over-saturated and carried at places like "Nordstroms". She bragged that they were one of the 1st out of 3 stores to carry Chie Mihara, as if the brand is old news. (Blasphemy!) Well honey, I used to work in the shoe department at Nordstroms and they currently don't carry Chie Mihara (only online). In fact, they are hard to find! I live in San Francisco and the only wide selection is carried in 2 stores- Gimme Shoes and Rabat. She sent me to Olive Shoes (whose store front is closed) and Ped Ex (weird hippie bohemian store which had 2 Chie Mihara shoes). Perhaps if I want better service I will just stick to Nordstroms, or good ol' Gimme Shoes. read more

I just moved to Portland and was wandering the Irvington neighborhood and peeked into Halo Shoes. I knew I was in a service oriented store when I asked about a recommended cobbler and the sales woman gave me a card but also said that they bring in shoes to this cobbler every week. That is amazing service! I was really impressed with the brands of shoes that this smallish store carries and the sale prices were also quite impressive. I was surprised at the level of friendliness of the sales staff at Halo because to be honest, I am used to going into a store in San Francisco that is about the same size and is notorious for similar shoes but snooty service. I didn't buy shoes because I had my kids next door at Peet's waiting for me but I did leave buying two pairs of extra long socks from Germany and the gentleman that helped me was actually the owner of the store. I was then more impressed that the owner was there on a Saturday afternoon and looking after his store. I am not used to such friendly service in a shoe store that sells the expensive but very quality brands that Halo sells. I will be back for boots at Halo eventually but since I am a newbie to Portland, I am going to take some time and get used to the climate and rain, then figure out what boots will work for me. I will be back to Halo for sure, though. I also like supporting a great local business! read more

I bought a pair of boots here for over 300 that had missing grommets and missing stitching. I noticed these problems once I got home and planned on exchanging them the next day. When I went in the next day to show them the missing grommets and stitches the woman told me that that was a part of the "quirky design' of the shoe. I asked why she did not point this out the day before, because it clearly looks like the integrity of the shoe could be compromised due to the missing grommets and stitching, she told me that she thought it was obvious. I told her that it was not at all obvious and would like my $$$ back please. I was very polite, and assumed she would undoubtedly understand and just simply return my $$$. I told her that these "quirks" were not obvious to me, and had I know they left out grommets and stitching on a pair of $300 boots as a design "quirk" I would not have purchased them. So, I asked for a refund. I had my receipt, the box, everything...and she tried to tell me NO!...So, I made her call the owner, who was on vacation with his family and he tried to tell me I could not get a refund?!?!...WOW! In the end I got my refund, after pounding into these peoples heads how they need to point out "quirky" designs that I consider FLAWS in the shoes. I had to DEMAND my refund. Witch was very upsetting after a long day. So if you decide to go here, make sure you look out for missing grommets and stitches in your boots before purchasing them, because these people consider things like that, "quirks" read more

I am disappointed in halo. I've been a long time customer, but since they moved there is one older woman who works there who I try to avoid. I have always had great customer service from them, but this woman makes me not want to shop there. She is often rude and unhelpful, and whenever I see her working I turn right around and head for the door. The other ladies that work there are quite nice and helpful. They usually have such a great staff, sad to see that that is not the case anymore. read more
