I love this produce store, and really wish that I lived closer! This is about as close as one can get to a substitute for a European open-air market, like Milk Pail (which closed in Mountain View almost a decade ago). There are lots of uncommon fruits and veggies, like fresh jujube fruits, prickly pear cactus fruits, and specialty herbs and greens. It's a great way to support local businesses and farmers, while keeping excess produce out of the landfills. The open-air market style also allows for individual selections of produce, and considerably less plastic packaging!! Don't forget your reusable bags, but if you do, they sell some and they even offer green, compostable produce bags available for any quantity you are in need of. Foothill Produce is particularly great for discount deals on ripe produce if you are keen on same-day recipes. They also have a large selection of European, Russian, Polish, Middle-Eastern, and Jewish foods (fresh and frozen). The market always has apples of almost every variety, seasonal products, fresh breads and challah, and plenty of standard groceries as well. Fingers crossed for a bountiful 2026. Very interesting multi-ethnic grocery with a an especially large variety Israeli imports, but also with stuff from Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine), the Middle East, etc. I find it very similar to Felipe's in Sunnyvale, but with higher prices across the board. As a result, I won't be coming here very often, but it's a good option for people who live in the area. read more

I've been a loyal customer at Foothill Produce for over 15 years, and for a long time, I was very satisfied. Their prices have always been reasonable, and while there were occasional quality issues, they were easy to overlook. However, I've recently stopped shopping here as often due to a serious decline in the freshness of their produce. It's become common to see pallets of berries and other items that are completely moldy or rotten. Even if these items are discounted, selling produce in this condition is a health risk and shouldn't be allowed. I'm leaving this one-star review to get management's attention, please stop putting moldy products out for customers. I am more than willing to update this review and return as a regular customer once I see a consistent improvement in quality read more

Been shopping at this place since they opened, and they have grown from a tiny store to quiet a remarkable size. The products range from great finds of fresh organic vegetables, to so & so, you really got to check the quality... They have a nice assortment of marinated Herring, different liver bursts, smoked vacuum packed fish, and other great finds. Milk products, cheese, eggs and so on are similar prices as grocery stores. They have an amazing assortment of juices, crackers etc from different countries. The fruit & vegetable prices are fair, as long as you make sure it's fresh. Though the store is big, it is pretty cramped space, because they have so much produdce. Most of the staff is nice, and help if they can. All in all, it is an unusual store, you never know what you are going to find. If you like a really clean organized store, skip this place, it's like an indoor farmers market. read more

It's a small speciality store next door to the one of the best speciality stores: Trader Joe's. I quibble a bit as I regularly find berries that are moldy and veggies with soft spots. Really loved this place for their selection of fruits and vegetables, great prices too. But after few months of shopping here, I'm giving up. 8 out of 10 times they overcharge me. The young cashier doesn't seem to know what some of the items are. But instead of asking she just enters random things. HOLY MOLY!!! What a treasure trove of produce and at great prices!! We found giant heads of broccoli for $0.49/lb!! There is no shortage of variety in produce here, it reminds me of a Berkeley Bowl "light" with a lot of international goods. There must have been 10 variety of apples and pears, lots of mushrooms and potatoes too! I was able to find quite a few accidentally vegan cookies and biscuits which was a lovely surprise! Also, was able to find 100% rye bread, which is not easy to find! It can be a bit cramped in here, so be ready to work your forearms carrying around a heavy basket rather than pushing a cart. I can't wait until my next visit! If you're in the area for Trader Joe's, it might be helpful to stop here first before going there. They import produce from all around the world, which is such a nice experience to see the unusual items, a bunch of fresh vegetables, arugula, and spinach they sell by the way, which I find very cool, the okra purchased was long crispy and delicious. Always great customer service at Foothill Produce. I have been buying fresh veggies and fruits at this store since it opened. The customer service is second to none. Anahi, (who always greets with a beautiful smile) plus Jose and Shinafi (Alejandro) are always quite a delight to deal with. If you have a question, just ask. Great local run grocer and prices are so reasonable. Especially because there is a TJ's next door you can compare these prices Foothill Produce is locally sourcing and the mangoes, strawberries, veggies were priced well. Strawberries pack for $1.29, kiwis for $0.79 each, red and green grapes $1 a pound, kale bunches for $2. Tasted great - probably won't store for more than 3-5 days. This is my go-to place for getting fresh produce at an incredibly decent price. It is definitely not your average suburban supermarket, but rather a relatively smaller store that carries ALL of your produce essentials. Since it is a smaller store, you don't need to spend a ton of time picking up your weekly groceries--I'm always in and out of there within 15-20 minutes. The staff is always kind and greets their customers with a smile (pre-pandemic when we could see smiles) and a friendly wave! They leave out sanitizer spray bottles and paper towels outside to wipe down your cart before using it, which I appreciate. Furthermore, there is an acrylic barrier between the cashier and the customer for extra protection. read more

When shopping for delicate fruit [apples, peaches, etc.], you might have to watch out for the occasional bruises, but the vegetables are most always super good and super fresh. I accidentally dropped my ID on the floor in there once while shopping, and the clerk chased me down in the parking lot to return it before I got away. So three years later, I think that rude employee is now gone as I haven't seen her in ages. Anyways, like many other reviews have already mentioned, you won't find a better place anywhere in the Bay Area to get all sorts of produce at prices this cheap. It's exactly why this place (just like owner Felipe Diaz's two other stores -- Felipe's Market in Sunnyvale and Cupertino Market in Cupertino) gets so crowded. If you want to avoid the crowds, get here first thing in the morning when they open up. If you do, there will usually be just one or two other customers there at the same time you're there. Ever since this store opened up c. 2008, it's been such a vast improvement of the previous Foothill Produce that occupied the same store. That store was also family-owned and operated, but it didn't get anywhere near the same level of foot traffic. The owners, although really nice, seemed to never get enough business. After they closed and Felipe took over, Ken (the owner of the previous Foothill Produce) went next door to work at Trader Joe's. The only two big drawbacks to this place are A) how crowded it gets during the day (which is something you want no part of given the pandemic), and B) there are times when there are a lot of flies throughout the store. You wouldn't know it from the outside, but this is actually both a fruit and vegetable market and a European / Middle Eastern food store. I discovered this a while back when I stopped in to pick up some fruit and was surprised to find a pretty good selection of foreign foods and specialty bakery items. This Market is just less than half a mile away from my residence and has become my go-to shop for produce, bread, and specialty/international goodies. Fruits and vegetables are hit or miss. Sometimes you can get a really good deal on berries, but that probably means that they've been sitting on the shelf for a while so you had better eat them quickly before they start to turn. Sometimes you can find some different types of apples beyond the Fuji and Gala varieties that seem to be everywhere, but again the quality can vary. Vegetable prices can be very good, though I find that I have to select my products carefully. The prices fluctuate, but here's an example of the best prices I've seen here: heirloom cherry tomatoes for $0.69/lb, strawberries for $1.25,Blueberries for $0.60, corn for $0.79, persimmons for $0.99/lb, carrots for $0.49/lb, yellow/orange bell peppers for $0.69/lb, yellow onions for $0.39/lb.... and the list goes on and on. The produce is consistently cheaper and higher quality than in the big supermarkets. In the summertime, the half flats of strawberries are the same quality as the ones at the farmer's market which sell for $12-15. Green and Red grapes are my husbands favorite here and it's only about $4.9/lb. The cherry and grape tomatoes are loaded with flavor and I(and other customers) buy them in pounds when they are in season. Some people complain about the quality of the produce - sure sometimes a couple items go bad, but that's because they source deliciously ripe produce instead of the under-ripe tasteless produce that the supermarket chains have to offer! Nevertheless this place has become my goto weekend destination and even after picking up so many items my bill doesn't exceed $40 which is for sure worthy in giving a shot of visiting this market. read more

Wow- wish I lived closer. This little GEM right by 280 offers a HUGE variety of produce and specialty foods (I love that part) at very reasonable prices. I have to say how much I appreciate that last point considering the neighborhood they're in where they could easily be jacking up their prices. They've also got the largest eggplant and cosmic apples I've ever seen. Generally the quality of the produce is excellent although i did get some cherries that were a bit overripe once. It's very convenient to have a Trader Joes right next door too. read more

Maybe this was an off day but I shop here often and I am very put off. I usually shop for produce on the left side of the store. I know it's crowded and messy but I expect it. Today I shopped on the right side. This is where the cheeses and meats are. It took 27 minutes to get some sliced meat. There was only one person ahead of me. It was like slicing in slow motion. Was she measuring everything with a caliper? Okay, you know when the time comes when you should just walk out? I should have just gone over to Trader Joe's. Next stop, the cashier. When she started coughing and then went to grab my food, I quickly collected it and went to a different cashier. This one was drinking from a Starbucks container while ringing me up. Classy. Isn't there some law about general cleanliness in markets? Coughing and grabbing food. Very off putting. Off to the side of the cashier stations sits a large gray bucket with the rotten food. This place has lots of cheap produce along with packaged food items mainly from the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Unfortunately most of the cheap produce they sell is about to spoil, and won't last more than a day or two even if you put it in the fridge. Many items have no price labels or they are incorrectly labeled. Prices you pay might not be the one you see above the produce. Check your receipt, but they won't honor the price even if you catch an error. You get what you pay for. read more

Produce is priced well. Vegetables are primarily good. Fruits are frozen and thawed, so they are mostly black when you open them at home. I never buy milk here since the milk is always bad even though the expiration date is still days away. However, the worst are some of the cashiers, who are rude, and obnoxious that make fun of and gossip about the customers in Spanish in their faces. Some do not pack for you, just ring you and move on to the next customer while you are trying to put your purchases in your bag. This is a MilkPail wanna be in S. Los Altos. Products: Milkpail, Sprouts product quality is much better. Some of the corns and fruits are spoiling but they still sell it (pretty good price though) and vegetables are soft (not fresh), bell peppers look good. Cereal doesn't look great but I didn't try so hard to say if it's fresh and crunchy. Got some grapes there but many of them are bad. I'm very particular with cheese, since overall product freshness is average, I dare not try the cheese there. Price: Most of the prices are pretty good. Although, you have to be aware, most of the good price is on produce, they are definitely not the best price if you review the weekly sales on Safeway, Lucky and Sprouts. However, if you need something right away, their prices are ok. Better than non-promotional items at supermarket. Be aware of the other goods like cheese, biscuits, chocolate etc. They have a good mark up. Customer service: So far, most of the workers there are pretty good except the boss. I've seen him got frustrated and rude and yell at his workers and sometime rude toward clients. Tonight I saw him yelling at a customer saying, "I'm the boss, I can do whatever I want and you can't do nothing about it." Wasn't sure what it's about, but it's something like the customer said overcharged him and the boss said the customer was wrong but end up found out the customer was right. But what bugs me is what he said about he doesn't care if he's a customer or not. I thought service industry is always customer 1st. All in all, I was offended by the boss how he treats customers so I'm not too big a fan to shop here. In economy like this with such competitions around, customer service is vital. If they want to earn more business from the customers, they need to treat the customers well. I'd rather take my business to somewhere that appreciate my business. If you are looking for relatively inexpensive produce near Los Altos you have three choices, The Milk Pail in Mountain View that appears to slipped a few notches since the rebuilding the whole neighborhood and parking lots, Felipe's Market in Sunnyvale, and Foothill Produce. I had not visited Foothill produce in a while and they have really branched out to carry a wide selection of food and produce since my last visit. One thing they are not known for is customer service, so if you over look that and are willing to go on a scavenger hunt for what you need or what they have to offer that day you will be rewarded with more spare change in your pocket. I asked if they had yellow corn and all the person did was give me the confused look and shrugged. They also have blaring music to make your shopping experience even more interesting than the patrons you find shopping with you here. I hate biking here because it's surrounded by really steep hills, and I haven't figured out how to balance when assuming the non-sitting position on the bike =( But I always feel like it's worth it once I've reached this awesome produce store. Great prices for great produce. Some of the things that I found were extremely good value (in the summer!) were: $0.99/lb organic tomatoes $0.99/organic celery stalk (about 1 lb) $0.99/10 limes $1.99/lb baby spinach leaves $3.49/lb spring mix $0.99/huge handful of fresh herbs and pretty much anything else in season I totally missed the back room the first few times, so make sure you check out that area, behind the mushrooms on the left of the store when entering. It contains bulk beans and nuts as well as spices at very reasonable prices. I like to get my tamari almond fix at $5.99/lb. They also have a bunch of imported European stuff, as well as the very popular Acme bread, so be sure to look out for those! read more
