    Nice to know it's ORGANIC!

Recent update - March, 2025 - RAVING about the recent availability of TerraFresh Peruvian ORGANIC mangos. Every one has been edible when purchased, though shelf-ripening always helps. A few though, have been shelf-ripe from the get-go! What a joy to open the mango to see deep orange, soft, sweet fruit-meat inside. Either way, after shelf-ripening at home for a few days, or ripe immediately, these mangos are worth a visit to Avas.

You would think this place would be super busy and overpriced because it's in the downtown/popular area but it's neither and I loved it just for that reason! I was able to buy a nice bouquet of flowers for a friend quickly and easily at a really decent price of $12 and it wasn't busy at all even though the street itself was jam-packed! Definitely going back

Cute local market on Castro St. that has a good variety of things, from fresh produce, fresh bread, baking supplies, tons of cheeses, wines, etcetera. HeyO! and Pokebar are both located inside here as well. I come here often for: poke, and last minute grocery runs. +1 Fresh baguette! YUMM. Pretty cheap too! +1 Cheese selection makes we want to get everything! We ended up getting brie, and camenbert. +1 "Meats" selection...not too sure what we got, but everything here looked delicious too! (see pics) Overall, a stable spot on Castro that will probably be here a while considering the traffic that is always coming through.

This store has been my go-to store for grocery pickup through the pandemic Pros - They have a huge parking lot in the back (adjacent to the one with CVS) - They're fully stocked on most days .. even better than some of the local target, whole food stores - Staff is really friendly and respectful of covid guidelines - They even have a local deli for sandwiches etc. Cons The only possible con is the fact that they don't serve as many organic vegetables

There are lots of uncommon fruits and veggies, like fresh jujube fruits, prickly pear cactus fruits, and specialty herbs and greens. It's a great way to support local businesses and farmers, while keeping excess produce out of the landfills. The open-air market style also allows for individual selections of produce, and considerably less plastic packaging!! Don't forget your reusable bags, but if you do, they sell some and they even offer green, compostable produce bags available for any quantity you are in need of. Foothill Produce is particularly great for discount deals on ripe produce if you are keen on same-day recipes. They also have a large selection of European, Russian, Polish, Middle-Eastern, and Jewish foods (fresh and frozen). The market always has apples of almost every variety, seasonal products, fresh breads and challah, and plenty of standard groceries as well. Fingers crossed for a bountiful 2026. This one is in the beautiful downtown Los Altos - with a huge variety of ready-made food and produce stands selling gorgeous seasonal produce (part of our haul - fresh mulberries, which I had never seen before, the largest figs EVER, and fresh sugar snap peas). I love the feeling of a community coming together and showing their best side. A ton of young people gathering with high school friends and college mates in lively chatter alongside aging adults grabbing a novel bite to eat of so many different kinds of food... Italian pizza or kettle corn or gluten-free, Mexican cuisine or Thai skewers freshly grilled. And addition to the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, You can also find fun culinary things to buy like exotic spices, premixed ramen broth concentrate to take home and prep, premade, gluten-free noodles, and several bakeries, displaying sweet treats and crusty exotic breads. Everyone seemed cheerful, and there were several vendors passing out yummy free samples to try!

It's a really good work out, required some labor, but it's all worth it! The best part you got to learn a lot about gardening and for a good cause! Their mission and vision: Bay Area food pantries struggle to provide nutritious food for the local homeless and low-income population. In particular, fresh fruits and vegetables are rarely donated in edible condition, and higher quality produce is too expensive to purchase. The Almost Eden Garden Project grows premium-quality organic produce for several local organizations that provide meals and services for homeless and low-income families -weekly deliveries are made to Urban Ministries in Palo Alto, Bread Of Life Ministries in East Palo Alto and to the South Palo Alto Food Closet. They are looking for a lot more volunteers with opportunities: Working in the garden; Harvesting; Securing Donations; Seed Starting; Making Wooden Structures/Decorations; Providing Food For Work Days; Volunteer Recruiting and Fundraising. But it was invisible to me. Until today, anyway. I am so happy I finally found it. Because Gourmet Works is much more than a store that sells candy and chocolate. In fact, as the name would suggest, it's more of a Gourmet food store and Gift Shop than a Chocolate Shop. But it's also a hella cool chocolate shop and that's the main reason I will be sure to return. Right when you walk in the door you are surrounded by an astonishingly large variety of items that would make the perfect gift for a loved one, or for yourself. Because, I ain't gonna lie, there were at least a dozen items that I considered buying for myself. I thought to myself, you know, I do so much for me, and it seems I rarely properly thank myself for my devoted patronage and self care. If you are interested in high quality gourmet gifts, Gourmet Works is definitely the place to go! They carry so many products you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. Gourmet Salts, Dried Herbs, Pasta Sauces, Dried Pasta, Curry Sauces, Masala Simmer Sauce, Special Preserves and Jams. An impressive, well-curated selection. Then, at the back of the store you find the kind of Chocolate display case that dreams are made of. Oh my Lord! Just the Truffle side alone would be enough to melt anyone's heart. But the other side, with the astonishing variety of hand dipped chocolates is where I lost it. I saw the Almond Bark and stopped dead in my tracks. I stared at that Almond Bark. The Almond Bark stared back at me. We were locked into that stare down for what seemed like an eternity. I was sure neither of us would ever give in. But then I blinked. Somehow I became aware that the wonderful woman behind the counter was asking me if she could help me. As I regained my senses, suddenly I felt so embarrassed. How long had I been staring at that Almond Bark? How many times had she tried to get my attention? I had no idea. I tried to play it off like there was nothing going on between me and that Almond Bark. I casually inquired about some Chocolate Covered Caramels with Sea Salt on a totally different shelf in the display case. Then, of course, I had to buy a couple of those Chocolate Covered Carmels with Sea Salt, to cover up the whole situation with me and the Almond Bark. I purchased a couple ordinary, un-chocolate covered Caramels with Sea Salt too. The woman behind the counter couldn't have been more gracious. She didn't let on that she knew exactly what was happening and I wasn't fooling anyone with the whole Chocolate Covered Caramels with Sea Salt charade. So, my thanks to Gourmet Works, and the gracious woman behind the counter, Padmaja (her family owns Gourmet Works). It was such a pleasure to shop at your wonderful store! Mikey C says: I'm coming back for you, Almond Bark!
