I'm not sure what their policy is, but I've taken a needy friend to surrender 2 cats because he cant afford to get health care for them. He is a cat HOARDER with 7 cats in a 1 bedroom apt. Feeds all his cats from donated food from other sucker friends. He has surrendered 2 in the last year. One was nursed back to health, and allowed for readoption from him. the other one euthanized. Well now they are holding an elderly cat for him, and will waive the adoption fee for it because it's 10+ yrs old. This cat will not have a happy life if readopted by him. I dont think they care for any of the pets well being. I even tried to tell the front desk lady about the situation. She didn't give one crap. I'm pretty sure this place is run mostly by donations from people who care. But does FHAS?? I dont believe so, and will NEVER RECOMMEND FOOTHILLS OR DONATE!. BOTTOM LINE... THEY DONT GIVE A CRAP WHAT KINGMD OF LIFE THE OET WILL HAVE! DONATE TO A SHELTER THAT CARES! read more

My daughter and I's first time at the shelter and it was exactly how we needed to spend an afternoon. We met all of the cutie animals up for adoption and I was so impressed by the facility. This review pertains to their dog licensing and non existent customer service: My dog was licensed when I adopted him in 2014, we moved out of state in 2015 and returned in 2016. When I re-licensed him I requested a license tag since I had discarded the original tag when I moved. I never received a tag nor a response from Foothills even though I requested a tag every time I renewed his license, I never received a tag nor a response. His license renewal was on 7/21 every year, I mailed his renewal form along with a check on or around 7/1/23. Unfortunately, my dog had to be euthanized on 7/12/23 and when I called on 7/14 I was unable to speak to anyone so I left a voicemail asking to be refunded the fee I paid. To date I haven't received a response nor a refund. In my opinion, Jefferson County should handle the animal licensing themselves rather than farming it out to an incompetent organization. read more

Supporting animal shelters and particularly encouraging the adoption of rescue animals has always been close to my heart. We attended the Foothills Animal Shelter Pup Market - a market designed to support / fund raise for the shelter as well as provide tours and education about fostering, adoption and all things animals. It reminded me of small craft market: lots of vendors with wares ranging from animal related items, to food samples, beer options, clothing vendors, food trucks, even vendors related to home goods and services. We toured the shelter as well and really appreciated the guides, their information and clear passion for animals. We've only adopted rescues and will forever only adopt rescues. I'm appreciative of having Foothills in our backyard, that they offer affordable services to pet owners (spay/neuter, vaccinations, micro chipping and lost/found services) as well providing so much information to potential animal owners to help learn about breeds, each breeds needs and how to determine the best fit for their families and the fur babies. While they aren't a no kill shelter, they are a "fear free" shelter: As a Fear Free Shelter, our team operates with the knowledge and tools to look after both a pet's physical and emotional well being. For me, I appreciate this. We have three fur babies, 7, 10 and 18 yo and see them as family members. We try not to ever miss an chance to support local organizations doing good in our community, particularly for our animals waiting to be pets. read more

be careful my puppy came back home with some gastro-intestinal sickness took three weeks to get rid of and was of the verge of dying he wouldn't eat or drink but we figured it out. Other than that nice people they do great work and its totally for a good and great cause. read more

We have adopted animals from the shelter and the people there and the way they do business is a plus we adopted two kittens at one time and one of them only lived a couple months now. No problems from none of the images did not thrive and they made good made us feel good and they helped us get a brand new kitten at no charge with extra help. We've always been dog people, and when our dog passed suddenly, we knew we had to get a new addition to the home. This shelter was featured on the news back in April, so I scrolled through their page of dogs available for adoption. There were four dogs that we were interested in, so we went early one Saturday morning in April. 2 of the dogs we were interested in were not there (possibly already adopted), but we were drawn to a medium size "Labrador mix". Dan stood by the cage while I went to get someone from the front desk to let us have a private room for a "meet and greet." The employee told me that the dog was skittish and shy. It was obvious that she had recently had a litter of puppies, but they had no idea where they were. We did our "meet and greet" and decided this was the dog we wanted. We sat in the room waiting for someone to check on us for 20 minutes before I decided to go back to the front desk and tell them we wanted this dog. There was another wait while they processed our paperwork, paid the adoption fee, and got directions for medications she needed due to an infection she got while being being spayed. We were also given a coupon to cover her first full veterinarian appointment (up to $400). When it was finally our turn to leave, she came running out on her leash, wanting to say hello to everyone on her way out, tail wagging, ready to see her new home. As is the case with many non-profits and service industries, this Shelter is probably understaffed and working as fast as they could, so I can't fault them for any delays. The facility is clean, all of the animals seem to be well cared for. They had dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, turtles, reptiles and more.. Located off of 6th Avenue and Union in Lakewood. At the time of adoption, she was pretty skinny and medium size. At her last check up, she had put on 30 pounds and is now weighs 73 lbs and is spoiled rotten She still needs some training, but that will come with time.. I got my rabbits from here, I was kinda sad that there were only two choices of bunnies, Isabel and My bunnies , Athena and Zeus (whom i renamed) and they came in 2 days before I got them. They didn't seem to have many "human skills" and definitely weren't okay with any human interaction on the first day, but they have started to warm up to me and I give them carrots as treats and other fruits whenever I pick them up (which they HATE.) they REALLY like carrots and the cages/kennels are HUGE here. much running around space and good playing span. It was probably (USA metric system, ) 5x3 ft. And I didn't adopt a cat from here but the cat kennels are huge and they have these 'stairs' where they can climb up and play. The dogs also have a pretty large space , and staff is AMAZINGLY KIND . They were so calm and gentle and answered all our concerns and everything. The staff is extremely rude, unfortunately including the manager. We lost our cat & came in to claim him, the girl at the front desk was extremely rude and assumed I wasn't his owner just by looking at me before collecting any information. I'm assuming she made this ignorant assumption based off of my race and couldn't possibly imagine that a Hispanic looking woman could have a white last name. I told her how does she know I'm not his owner if she hasn't even asked for my information. She then proceeded to ask for my ID to confirm... & guess what it matched. I then asked for a manager and the manager seemed to brush it off. The employees were right behind her giggling. An embarrassing and belittling experience, when it should have been joyous. Please do better! Hire better people! The people I encountered were subpar at best. Thankfully we now have our cat back in our custody and couldn't be happier. Can't fix stupid though & I will not recommend anyone to adopt from this place. Save yourself and go else where. If you have a lost pet hopefully you don't deal with train wrecks I had to. Update not to mention - we just got our cat home and noticed he had a huge whole on his rear end, it's obviously infected and now we are having to take him to emergency clinic. What a terrible first adoption experience! After waiting to find the right fit for us, the shelter assured us that the dog we wanted would be a good fit for a city apartment. We had no idea that he was reactive and aggressive and we couldn't even take him outside without being afraid that he would hurt someone. When we reached out asking for humane rehoming options, the behavior team assured us that they would exhaust all options to rehome him should we return him. 3 hours after we returned him hoping for the best, we were notified that he was euthanized. We got miss Cali now Chiyo in October. We wanted to get our gray tabby a sibling so we came here! We had a wonderful experience with the staff as they were very helpful and gave us the information to best comfort her in a new home. She was so timid and shy. It took her and her brother some time to get along but when they finally warmed they became inseparable. She also had a tricky time with us, hiding and hardly coming out from under the bed. The staff was very professional and very knowledgeable about each dog. They were clear on issues relates to behavior. I selected a boy who had been returned to the shelter due to a long "rap sheet" of separation anxiety issues. The prior owners made a bad choice but to my benefit because I could provide the constant companionship and supervision he needed. He is perfect and I appreciate that this shelter takes back adoption failures to give pups their best chance for success. They save pets from other shelters and provide model facilities and excellent adoption process. I was able to meet and greet the potential adoption with my other dog and my small great-granddaughters to assure compatability. From the moment I entered this shelter, I had such a wonderful feeling. The lobby is very open and all of the employees I interacted with were amazing-so helpful and friendly. I asked one of the employees behind the desk about the dog I had seen online and he immediately shared some background information about the dog, as much as they had, as most rescued dogs do not have extensive background histories that are known...if only they could talk! This shelter was the cleanest shelter I have visited during my recent visits over the past few months, and it also smelled very fresh and clean both times I was there. This really made such a difference when adopting in my opinion. The shelter workers and volunteers were all very laid back and helpful, which also contributed to my feeling so comfortable in spending time there with the animals and really making sure I was making the right choice in picking out my new family member. Within ten minutes of entering, I found myself in a meet and greet room, which was very large, and had a big plastic sofa in it. The dog I was interested in came in and greeted me with tons of sloppy kisses and a big hug! I already knew at that moment that I would be taking him home! He was just what I was looking for, after losing my best friend of 14 years. After showering me with kisses, he jumped up onto the sofa and laid down next to me, put his head on my lap, and fell asleep. Since it was already past 6 PM and the shelter was closing at 7, I stayed with him until closing, and was able to put a hold on him so that I could come back the next day and take him on a walk near the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. The hold they offer is great. It is a $15 nonrefundable hold, but is a nice way to prepare for your new best friend to come home with you. The next day, we took a walk in the amazing 68 degree weather in February, that Colorado sometimes enjoys. My new friend was very calm on the leash, even when seeing birds and other dogs that he was interested in. There was a big line when we got back, but we were helped pretty quickly. The person who helped us, processed the adoption paperwork, discussed different things about the adoption with us, and then microchipped my new friend. Thank you Foothills Animal Shelter! The hubs and I dropped off some donations for the shelter last weekend and were so impressed with the facilities. We already have 4 rescues in our house but we still did a lap through the adoptables torturing ourselves with wanting to add to the fur family. Each animal has a well written review of who they are and the spaces they were in were well sized and clean. None of the animals seemed stressed out and I hope they all find happy fabulous homes. read more

I adopted my dog in July. I went to Foothills because I was a volunteer there before the current shelter was built. I know then that the staff and volunteers were truly dedicated to serving the animals in their care . Sadly, today I think they are overwhelmed and understaffed. They allude to the post adoption support. Nope. Don't call them before noon, there will be no answer. There is no medical staff on call. There are no behaviorists to help with post adoption problems. Don't leave messages or send emails. They will go unanswered. When you take your adopted pet home you are on your own. Sometimes just talking with someone will keep a pet in a home and give them a 2nd chance. There is no vetting process. Not sure how that helps the animals. DO enroll in the insurance program, it really helped when I ended up at the vet immediately after adopting. Please adopt if your serious about a forever pet. Expect a wave goodbye And that's it. It makes me sad because hundreds, thousands of animals go through those doors. read more

Adopted a kitten from Foothills Animal Shelter approximately 6 weeks ago. I was informed when adopting him that he had been treated for ringworm, albeit cured. Unfortunately after bringing him home and having him around our two other dogs and whole family, my daughter and two dogs contracted ringworm. We have spent a couple hundred on vet visits, another $300 on Intraconazole medication for all 3 animals, as well as hundreds on cleaning products and anti fungal shampoos. Above and beyond, we have to scrupulously clean and disinfect our entire home (including washing our walls). We now have all three animals contained to our kitchen and family room for the next 6-12 weeks or longer until we can get this ringworm under control. During the containment of the pets we need to clean and disinfect every surface of the containment area every day. Being from Colorado, I have never had to deal with this in any of my pets because it is not common here like it is in the southern United States. Adopter beware!! They adopt out animals with highly contagious ailments and diseases. read more

There is ample reason that there are a plethora of 1 star reviews and horror stories associated with this shelter. Two good friends have adopted animals, one was a dog and another a cat, and both animals showed aggressive and neurotic tendencies. Perhaps it is due to a lack of resources, being overwhelmed, or a combination, but the facility gives the impression of being kind and caring, while the animals they treat seem to suffer significant neglect. If you peruse the 1 star reviews most are the same; animals being neglected medically before being discharged, families being lied to about what is to happen with a beloved companion, poor communication, and a surprising lack of empathy for the humans and animals they serve. Shelters are an incredible part of our communities, but I would support one that isn't as unprofessional and calloused with both it's clients and animals. read more

I surrendered my kitty here unfortunately due to having to move quickly and not being able to bring her to my new home. I would have given foothills 5 stars however I am upset about a few things. I waited over 20 minutes to be helped by a employee. I was greeted however I could tell that they were very short staffed. When I was finally helped I was asked a series of questions about my kitty. They asked about her behavior, history, medical, etc. I payed the 40$ fee and surrendered her to be adopted. The next day when I looked up my kitty on the foothills website, I saw that foothills wrote a bogus story about her. My kitty was a very shy, quiet and cuddley cat. Online they wrote she is energetic and hyper and needs tons of attention. Why ask me questions about her temperment foothills if your not even going to use it. If I was adopting her I would be misled about her behavior. However, foothills is a no kill shelter. I have adopted here before as well and they make the process easy and safe for the animal. My family and I visited Foothills Animal Shelter on Saturday and Sunday recently. Both times, the shelter wasn't too overly busy and we didn't have to wait long. We looked at one dog and decided he wasn't for us. We left without hassle. We came back the next day to look at dogs again. A different dog caught our eye and we asked to see him. The employee who brought him was familiar with the dog, and it was obvious the dog was familiar with him, too. We fell in love with the four-legged sweetie and decided to take him home. The adoption process was painless. We signed the forms and went over his medical history. We were also told we get a free clinical visit and that he'd need his rabies shot. The staff were very happy to see him go. On a random note, the shelter happened to have three giant Saint Bernards there. Two were in a big kennel together, while the third (a male) was put in one of the smaller kennels. I thought it was interesting and I hope all three find their homes soon. read more

Update: I was forced to put my cat down as her kidneys failed. Other vets either would charge 300 for this, or were not open on Sundays. The lady who helped me was wonderful and comforting and helped my baby through peacefully and lovingly, as they do not allow owners back for that. I could tell she really cared about my sweet Ashe. They gave me tissue as I sat crying there for a while and then I played with the kittens in the kitten room which helped a bit. When I am ready and able to take a new cat I will check back here again. read more

Great place! Extremely clean shelter and very friendly staff. I went in to look at the cats and was encouraged to take as much time as I wanted with each of the cats. They even have two private visitation rooms. The rooms were a little loud that frightened the more skittish cats. I finally selected my new baby, but needed to go out and pick up everything to welcome her to her new home. So I requested to put her on hold for the afternoon. I was surprised to learn there was a non-refundable $15 fee to place a hold. So I recommend being ready for a cat when you go to save you the fee. I also did not have a carrier for her and they were happy to sell me one for $6. Included in the adoption fee (which was $0 because it was July and she was older) was her shots, a micro chip and they gave me a voucher for a free check up at a local vet. Great value!! It's taken me a couple of months to decide that 'yes', I really am angry enough to write this review. TL;DR - Foothills Animal Shelter lied about a dog to get us to adopt it. Read on for details. A year after one of our family's dogs passed away we felt that we had reached the point in the grieving process where we were ready to consider bringing another dog into our family. My wife and I watched the 'Dogs available for adoption' page on the Foothills Animal Shelter's website until we saw a dog that we agreed we wanted to meet. She was listed a one year old retriever. We visited with her a week before Thanksgiving 2021. The shelter told us she was a transfer from New Mexico and that they didn't have much information about her. In the visitation room, the dog seemed rather timid, but soon came over, leaned against me and promptly sat down in my lap. We were smitten with her. She was quite emaciated and still needed spay surgery. The shelter offered that we could put a hold on her for a fee and be the first in line to claim her after the surgery. We agreed. A week later we received a call that this dog was out of surgery and we could have her if we wanted. We chose to come back for another visit before committing. Because of Covid, we were told that there were no animal-to-animal visitations being done, but we decided to bring our other dog, an elderly Beagle, just in case. After the second meeting with the dog, which went much the same as the first, we again asked if they had any more information. Nope, just that she was a transfer and Foothills' vets had checked her out. We asked about a dog-to-dog visitation, even though the shelter was supposedly not doing them, and were told that 'yes' they definitely recommended one. Interesting, in hindsight that should have been a clue. The behaviorist was extremely cautious introducing this dog to ours. Our other dog also came from Foothills ten years earlier, and when we did a dog-to-dog at that time it was a very casual affair. We didn't give this much thought at the time; we were excited about getting a second dog but, in hindsight, this should have been the second clue. The visit went okay and we agreed to adopt the dog. We took our old dog home and returned. We signed the contract, paid our fee, were given coupons for vet visits and insurance, some food, and a folder to put it all in. Then I was given the county dog registration form. When I asked about the breed, I was told 'Put in Labrador Retriever' which I did. As we prepared to leave we were given one last packet and told to give it to our vet. We tucked it into the folder and left. After we got home and the new dog started to settle in, my wife and I opened the folder to review all the information the shelter had given us. Stapled to the vet package was the initial intake paperwork from the shelter in New Mexico, including their vet's assessment of the dog, The New Mexico shelter did not list this dog as a retriever. They declared her a pit bull. We probably should have taken her back right then. For some reason we didn't. I did not know much about pit bulls, or bully breed dogs, and (foolishly) trusted the shelter had both the dog's and my own best interests in mind. Looking up American Pit Bull Terrier on line, I see our new dog looking back at me from the pictures. As she gained weight and continues to develop there seems no doubt that she is an APBT. Our vet and trainer agree. We would not have adopted this dog if we knew she was a pit bull. Opinion seems to be split between whether pit bulls are just misunderstood, or truly dangerous dogs. We opted to assume the former and have invested heavily in continual training. The dog is obedient and very friendly with our family in our home; outside our home is a different story. As time passes she is exhibiting more and more dog and stranger aggression. We will keep working with her since taking her back to the shelter could mean a death sentence or another unsuspecting family being sold the same lie we were to get her re-adopted. I am furious with Foothills Animal Shelter. They knew full well this dog was a pit bull and lied about it. It doesn't matter whether pit bulls are good dogs or not, what matters is that Foothills deceived our family into adopting a dog we would not have adopted if they had given us all the information they had in their possession. This might be the perfect dog for someone else. Instead Foothills tricked us into adopting her, creating an imperfect scenario for both us and the dog. I will never trust another animal shelter again because of this experience. read more

It's hard to get mad at an animal shelter but after dealing with Foothills my wife and I were beyond furious. We adapted a cat and they told us he was fixed. After we had him for a week and two expensive vet visits we knew his testicles were undecended. We called, emailed, even Facebooked them and never once received a response. My wife went in there in person and asked for proof that he was fixed; we were told by Foothills he was fixed there. We asked for the date and proof as he was clearly not fixed. They could not provide any proof so she demanded a testosterone test and they tried to kick her out! Finally a vet saw her in tears and agreed to check him out. When they did they see him they found out we were right and nuerted him immediately as it's illegal to adopt out an animal that is not fixed! Our carpet was ruined as he sprayed everywhere, he bit my wife and she got a horrible infection and a huge hospital bill, he was extremely aggressive towards other cats, had a huge head from all the testosterone and a black tail also known as dead tail....these are all common signs a cat is not fixed. All that changed after he got nuerted. I want to save you some grief and about 3k (not kidding). Ask for proof if you get a cat at Foothills that they are in fact fixed and healthy. Ours was not either of those, we will love him and do the best for him as it's not his fault! However if we ever adopt another animal, it will not be from Foothills. I got my rabbit from this shelter. They said she had been checked by a vet and was healthy. Within two weeks, she is in critical condition and in need of thousands of dollars worth of medical care. There is no way this shelter didn't know how sick this rabbit was. She was suffering from very bad dental disease as well as a large mass in her chest. I believe they lied in order to get her adopted. I'm a college student drowning in debt now. Make sure you take your animals from here to a vet asap. Don't trust when this shelters says that they are healthy. read more

For 4 years, I have done nothing but praise them, but never thought about submitting a review. I adopted Scarlett on 4/13/14, She needed teeth pulled, bladder surgery and a spay and they did it all right when she was brought in. Thats incredible. Thats how it SHOULD be done. I am in Vegas now and I run a non profit dog rescue. We go into the local shelters and save the dogs.. and I will tell you now, Ive NEVER found another shelter that treats and truly takes CARE of the animals. Here in Vegas and Cali and Texas, they are killed. Healthy. Adoptable. Murdered. Sleeping on cement. No heat or AC. Its a travesty. I thought they were all like Foothills. What a horrible reality to face. On 7/3/14 I adopted a 4 month old kitten from Foothills with a half tail, We named him Shadow. He was a Russian Blue, we found out later. Stunning. Loving. Independent. Ruled the dogs with a tender paw. Vet always said he was the healthiest cat they had ever seen. Never went outside. Did not get over vaccinated. Ate nothing but quality home cooked food. On 5/25/18 Shadow jumped over the dog gate, like usual, and he collapsed. He died from Sudden Onset Cardiac Arrest. Impossible to diagnose with no symptoms, unless you pay for an MRI/ECHO/Xrays and know what to look for. At this moment, I still cant talk about it. My heart is in a million pieces. He was supposed to outlive everybody, ya know? I never in my wildest nightmare thought he would be 1st to go. I thought I had more time. :( I'm saying this to say: Thank you Foothills. You gave me a son that I am grateful to have been able to spoil, to love on, to be loved back. You gave me almost 4 wonderful years with him. and I am so so grateful I was blessed with that time. I wont dare ask God Why. I just try to get through the day with his ashes around my neck. Please continue to do what you do. Please adopt from this shelter and help them save more animals. I had a miniature Dachshund since born who became handicap at age 2. I love & adore her & have put her first & cared for her every need. She & I had a close bond since she is like caring for an infant . She was 10 at the time I took her to Bouton Vetrinary clinic for anabiotic's for a bladder infection which are ongoing with a handicapped animal who bathrooms by expressing multiple times through the day. She has skin issues also & in the last few years had problems chewing a back foot having to bandage & heal multiple times. She was very much like my child. She was a spirited lovable sweet dog with a fighting spirit as nothing got her down until Bouton Vetrinary clinic called animal control. They charged me $350.00 for the visit & I just wanted antibiotics. They called wanted me to follow up visit after the RX's finished. I chose not to because they just wanted more $. Animal control/foothills animal shelter paid me a visit said they would pay for Bella's foot amputation & for me to bring her it. I got a copy of the complaint & I find it interesting *How they keep such careful notes of every interaction but (they leave out the part where they threatened me with criminal charges if I didn't euthanize my dog that day & they would not simply amputate the foot. If I was to take her home that's what they had planned to do) File Charges. I donated a car to this place I donated $250 to this place. Wow, do I have a different opinion of them now! read more
