Three and a half stars. Decent music permeates the well-lit, glass-enclosed establishment. The service upstairs is decent, and I had no trouble scheduling an appointment for a short-notice eye exam. As an open office loft, a handful of chairs near the steps serve as their waiting room. Their names slip my mind now (Nick and Marvin?), but the lab tech and receptionist fellas are hilariously tolerant of the contacts-incapable. Dr. Marcie Lerner is super maternal and sweet, and I was happy to make her my go-to neighborhood optometrist since she doesn't rush her patients. Her sub-in for vacations, Dr. Nancy Ross, is equally friendly and professional. Three stars for the store itself. Selection is reasonable, but some of the sales folks weren't really into helping you find frames, or describing different package options. They know the words "plastic" and "metal" and that's as helpful as they get. Delivery time was a day longer than estimated, and didn't get a prompt call for my new glasses being ready for pickup. Their manual adjustments were extremely disappointing. 2015 update: Alfredo was an awesome sales associate, setting the standards for patience and great service. read more

Been coming here for my eye exams upstairs for years and downstairs for glasses. Had them put in my lenses 6 years ago in frames I had picked out and they did a great job for only $129. This time around picked out a nice pair of Perry Ellis (yeah same name as my boxers.....small world!!!) frames $149 and total price of $297 and six days later received my new frames!!!!! Bad customer service! Horrible frame selection. Looked around for about 10 minutes and no one even greeted me or acknowledged I was there. Very poor frame selection for a eyeglass shop in Bethesda! Check out My Eye Dr down the street instead. They have Chanel Prada Oliver Peoples etc etc and it's the new and current line. Most of the stuff for eyes had was older frames. Visited on 7/30/13 in the morning hours to get assistance with a pair of eyeglasses bought at this site 3 years ago. The temples had pulled out of their posts, rendering the glasses not usable. Even though the warranty on this particular brand had expired after only 1 year, this is clearly the case of a manufacturer's defect, as explained to me by opticians at Voorthuis Optical at Montgomery Mall. Upon describing my problem to the female representative, she immediately replied that the eyeglasses are broken, which explicitly means that the glasses were broken by me, and that it is not a manufacturer's defect. Since I was already briefed on the legalities of terms "broken" and "manufacturer's defect," I refuted her statement and again reiterated my complaint that the glasses have a manufacturer's defect. She retorted by AGAIN stating that the glasses are "broken." She would not acknowledge the customer service responsibility of a manufacturer's defect...this lack of acknowledgement and customer support is reprehensible, and I will no longer be a customer of this national chain. I hope the rep reads this, if only to get a better understanding of providing acceptable customer service. Regarding the relationship between the on-site Optometry doctor, and For Eyes, the doctor has no managerial power in hiring or firing For Eyes employees. She simply leases the space from For Eyes, so there is no conflict of interest. I am a patient of her's, and will continue to be for as long as I feel I am getting high-quality eye care and medical advice from her. read more

One of my eyeglasses' nose pad broke accidentally, so I took them to the store. Richard, who I believe is the manager, is very friendly and enthusiastic. Recently had eye exam Done. Very thorough, and enjoyable personality of doctor. Front staff is great. Eye selection is very nice. Mr. Odom did a very good job of making sure I received what I wanted as for frames. I chose to get something different this time for lenses. So far though I to my great regret may need to bring them back, but I am going to wait a week or so to see if my eyes just need adjusting. This is the second time that my prescription with For Eyes in Bethesda has been wrong. Today I was told to come in to pick up my prescription sunglasses. When I got there the lenses in the eyeglass frames were clear glass. Finally, after trying to determine the source of the problem the sales agent said that he wrote it incorrectly, After complaining to the store manager I was told that they would put a rush on the correction, but that would take a week. The original order took 10 days. This is not really a rush, The time before that I ordered contact lenses. My order was lost the first time. The second time I ordered the lenses the wrong prescription was sent to the store. The folks that operate this franchise are incompetent. I will never go back there again. read more

I'm upgrading my rating for this business. I was contacted by For Eyes management a while after this original post and they offered to remedy the situation; to fix my glasses for free. I told them I didn't want to interact with that sales person again. They arranged for me to work directly with the store manager. They replaced the lenses for free. I got the progressive and anti-glare features again because they said they had improved the process. It's been six months now and my new lenses are just fine. No problems. The coating is not pealing off or look scratched. Most importantly, I don't treat them any differently than I did before. I only use soft cloth to clean them. I try to use my case but since I wear them all the time if I'm not sleeping. Lesson learned: Be honest. Be kind. Stand up to good truth and your integrity. You spend a lot of money. You should get what you pay for. With your integrity intact. And use Yelp for help. read more

For Eyes has been my optician for over 20 years because I know they will repair and refit my glasses at no charge. I am writing to make a special commendation of the Bethesda Store Manager, Richard Odom. He consistantly delivers five-star service with a smile. I came in to order new glasses because my dog had chewed up my current pair. In addition to advising me on my selection, he cleaned and refitted my old pair andalsso replaced the frayed stems at no charge. This man is a treasure and For Eyes should consider itself fortunate to have such an exemplary employee!!! read more

I had to reorder my gas permeable contact lenses and I can't how tell you how pleased I was. My previous For Eyes location took four to six weeks for the lenses to arrive. My other previous optician, which I used before going back to For Eyes charged a $40.00 rush fee, along with being more expensive and I would receive them in about a week. Syndy took care of my order and I got a call in less than two weeks without any extra charges. Gas permeable lenses are different from disposable in that they are custom made and should be ordered by the optometrist, rather than online. My grandma used to visit the For Eyes in Rockville, which closed recently, so when her glasses frame broke, I brought them to the Bethesda location. They fixed the frame and put new nose pads on and gave me a case to put them in for free in about five minutes! Despite the distancing, masks, and temperature checks they were having to deal with, everyone was so friendly and helpful and I highly recommend coming here. We will be back for sure! read more

I am appalled by their customer service. I can't believe this business is still in existence to be honest. After the wrong pair of contacts was ordered (which took a week to come in), the doctor was "unable" to see me until 5 days later to recheck the contacts that I already could not see out of. They kept telling me that the downstairs was a separate affilitation from the doctor's office so they kept transferring me back and forth. I have been to this office several times. If they cared enough about my problem, they could have been me on hold and walked the 4 stairs to converse with a member of the doctor's office. The customer service was rude, extremely unhelpful and disorganized. I would never go there again and wouldn't recommend anyone else to. read more

But since he has moved to a location "We Shall NOT name" (I will have to review THAT location later..not a good experience) I was a little worried about going to see the Dr who has take over the practice. After 2 years my husband and I have decided to stopped going. I called a month after placing my contact order, they lost my order but charged my card twice the amount, then told me they charged someone else's order to my card and I didn't have my current prescription on file. I had the eye exam one month prior. They did credited my card, replaced my order and when I picked the contacts up they were the wrong brand. I can't say enough about For Eyes in Bethesda. Following an eye appointment with Dr. Lerner, I selected frames for my new glasses. Richard Odom was extremely professional, knowledgable, and helpful. It was clear that he knew and understood his products. The store was busy with customers entering to pick up their glasses. Richard made each person feel that they were the most important customer, he spent time with each person, making sure that they received the best possible service, and I know I did. The customer service, and Richard's friendly, professional, courteous, and knowledgable customer service will definitely bring me back. I recently bought a pair of wraparound prescription sunglasses here, and they weren't cheap. Even with an online coupon they cost $400. Within the first week both lenses popped out. Brought them back, they repaired them. Happened again. So they sent these obviously defective glasses back to the factory, or so they said. Bottom line, after four visits over several months the glasses now seem okay though one lens remains scratched from when it popped out and hit the sidewalk previously. So someone from customer service contacted me almost immediately after I posted my review. He gave me his number and email address to further speak about my concerns and experience. I emailed him regarding the ridiculous policy of having a customer sign a waiver that For Eyes Optical is not going to reimburse or compensate their customer in any way should their brand new expensive frames be damaged, lost or destroyed whilst in their care. Of course I received no response from him. My advice is if you like their frames and their rude girl with the awful stank attitude then you will probably be ok. If you want For Eyes to put lenses in to your frames- DON'T go somewhere else where they will not ask you to sign a waiver. I will never go back there again. read more

On a very close friend's recommendation, we visited Lerner Vision Care for the first time. Not only was Dr. Marcie Lerner delightful and very thorough, but the people who fitted glasses were wonderful, too. David Markowitz helped us find the best glasses for my daughter, and then made several suggestions that reduced the total cost (we used our AAA card for a discount). David was very patient and a pleasure to talk to. As a long time customer at the former For Eyes location next to the Regal Theater, I was none to happy when it closed. I had just about given up For Eyes when it seemed that the new location would NEVER open!! So I was quite pleased when I visited the new store recently. While not quite as convenient to visit (no more free parking), the staff is as friendly and competent as ever. David M knew his stuff and offered terrific advice about products and fitting, and was also very patient (and entertaining) while I took my time trying on practically every frame in the store! I called back twice and received incorrect information about what my insurance covers. To top it off, my paperwork has been lost, so I will have to go back in to pick them out again. After a gawd-awful experience with My Eye Dr in Silver Spring, I came back to this shop. The only snag was that my appointment with the optometrist hadn't made it into the system, but she was able to squeeze me in with only a slight delay. The technician was new to the practice and still learning some of the equipment, but I can forgive him for that, we all start somewhere. The optometrist was great, spent loads of time to make sure that I was happy with the contact lenses she recommended, and gave me a pair to try for a week or so to make sure they work for me (they do!). Juwana, the technician in the optical shop was friendly and cheerful, and again took extra time to make sure my progressive lenses would be just right. One of my eyes sits higher than the other, so the "progression" is different in the two lenses. She is the first tech I've worked with who noticed this without my having to point it out!! All this, and their prices are great, too. read more

so confess that I hadn't had an eye exam in almost 9 years (could see well enough to function quite well). But very impressed with Dr. Marcy Lerner, who's taken over from Dr. Weiss whom I saw from the late 1980s until 2007 in this same location. I feel Dr. Lerner took the time to be extremely accurate, and overall has an incredibly nice manner. So I'm not leaving this downtown Bethesda, convenient location anytime soon. The only flaw has more to do with our broken medical/optical billing system, in that the price i was quoted when booking appointment was slightly different than what it turned out to cost. But they're dealing with so many different insurance plans (and we don't have optical insurance, but merely a slight discount on some of the services, e.g., basic exam for eyeglasses) that it's simply impossible for Dr. Lerner's assistant to get it right all the time.
