They changed the name to Sugar Planet. They have so much candy here! It was so hard to decide. They also have clothes, souvenirs, hats, men's swimsuits. Didn't see ladies swimsuits there. They had the most salt water Taffy. They also had like two aisles of flavors to choose from. I got a box of it which is almost gone. The floor in this place is tie-dye colored which is really neat. They also have an assortment of chocolate pretzels, different kinds of chocolates and Ice Cream! My favorite taffy from there was: Carmel, Butterscotch, Vanilla, Candy Corn, Cinnamon, birthday cake, grape, watermelon, banana strawberry, and cherry. I might stop by again before we head home to Michigan. I also bought a t-shirt and a bathing suit cover up and two bumper stickers. I can't imagine how a child must feel when they walk in the door of this place! They even have candy from when I was little which is hard to find anywhere else. The people behind the counter were really friendly. There was one teenager (I think) that was doing stock for more clothing. He was wearing headphones that was rude to me when I asked him a question. Employers shouldn't allow workers to wear headphones when they are working. Anyways... this place is definitely worth every dollar I spent on candy and so on! Bottom Line: Candy, more candy and souvenirs sold at high prices in a colorful atmosphere that kids will love but may leave adults cringing. I expected to really dislike Sugar Kingdom but I must admit I found it whimsical and mesmerizing. Of course it caters to kids and is overpriced but I still found a tour through the store irresistible. I was thoroughly entertained looking at the cheap clothing, bags, souvenirs, bulk candy bins, stuffed animals and trinkets and such. And I really like the swirly cotton candy inspired floor. Despite finding the store and concept interesting I didn't buy anything. What disappoints me about Sugar Kingdom is that it is substantially filled with low-quality, off-brand candy that is probably manufactured overseas. A lot of the candy is sold in bulk which is fun but Of course you pay a premium for all of that variety. One pound of bulk candy (gummies, hard candy, non-chocolate candy, etc.) is about $14 per pound. And since there are not scales located in the store for customer use you don't know how much money you're going to blow on refined sugar until it's time to pay. Still, I am curious about the Sugar Kingdom business model - just how many pounds of gummy candy must be sold during the three month peak season to make a profit for the year? And what is the inventory turnover ratio? I digress. Also, I hear rumors of an ice skating rink out back. What is that all about?!? I've tried to learn a little more about Nags Head's newest sweet retreat and found a few peculiar items on the Sugar Kingsom website - namely grammatical errors, the lack of address and contact information and a comparison to Disneyland. The Disneyland reference just struck me as odd for a East Coast store with locations in NJ, VA, NC and SC. Anyway, Sugar Kingdom is more of a curiosity for me than a place to spend money but I'm sure kids and doting parents and grandparents will love it! read more

"SUGAR..." Came here with my son to get some sweets on his birthday. SO MANY SWEETS-- lots of bulk bins from which to fill your self-serve baggies. These included wrapped candies like smarties & Nerds, chocolate covered nuts/ raisins, all sorts of gummies and sour gummies, every flavor of saltwater taffy, boston baked beans, jelly beans, and so much more. BUT there's more -- ice cream... chocolate truffles... fudge... candies inside toys... it really is a sugar-lover's paradise. We bought a lot... will be buzzing for the coming week for sure. The other half of the store seemed to be more clothes-oriented, and we didn't explore it. It's not the cheapest candy, but it's super convenient and nicely laid out. But if you're in Nags Head and looking for one-stop-shop for ALL your sweets needs, and maybe willing to spend a bit extra, this is the place to go. read more

Lots of great candy, slightly overpriced but it's for candy that's hard to find. Very colorful and a bit loud so be warned but it's all part of the fun. Half the store is to make your own candy bag and I have seen children open them and grab candy with their fingers to eat, which is gross. read more

All the fudge purchased by me and my family tastes the same. Either like nothing or faintly of coconut. The service was okay the person who helped us spoke enough English to understand what we wanted and he was friendly. The atmosphere was overwhelmingly pink. Listen folks. This place is the ultimate rip-off. First of all, they charge $16 a pound for freaking candy. There are little bags on each display area to put your candy in but when you take it to the counter they take that bag and Put it in another heavier bag, then press it on top of their scale and then tell you how much it is. You can't see the weight. It's facing them not you the customer. So a little handful of bit-o honeys $5. You could get more at family Dollar for $1.25. it's a very enticing place. Bright white clean with candy wall to wall. Parents do not let your kids sucker you into going there. You will just throw your money away. If you do by chance visit this place. Wide selection and high costs as other reviewers noted but after buying ~$50 of bulk candy (the lack of scales made it hard to tell how heavy it was) the quality/taste of the bulk candy was quite disappointing, almost every piece of candy just tasted like sugar, no flavor or very little flavor that wasn't really close to the description of the items.. Even familiar looking candies didn't taste the same, either the stock was old (some bins looked like it had melted) or it was almost like knock-off or counterfeit candy or something like that. Sugar Kingdom. It is what it says it is. Sugar in candy, and lots of it everywhere. I like the idea in principle, the ability for kids and adults to have a wide variety to choose from. However, I cringed at the cost, and even more so at the uncleanliness of the candy bins area. You are selling food. Why do I see the metal shovels have days old candy stuck to the utensils, and why are the buckets used to hold the metal shovels equally covered in days old candy? I'd be highly surprised this store wasn't closed during Covid. Covid may have done what the health department wouldn't do. It's pretty simple, clean the metal shovels, clean the buckets, clean anything that the customers are using/grabbing over and over and over again. And clean them 'throughout the day', not just at close, and not whenever you get around to it. Public health. Adhere to it. Cleanliness (or lack thereof) aside, the store atmosphere is decent. Kids like all the options, there's items for everyone, and even some typical beach-goer items as well (tshirts, towels, glasses, etc). I too didn't understand advertising an arcade where the games were all turned off. As for the ice rink ..... ?? Greetings fellow tourist looking at reviews of a tourist shop. You aren't really expecting great things are you? I myself was looking for a giant candy store to waste some time at before our next planned activity. In that we succeeded, but this is much more than a candy store, you also can get the typical tourist memorabilia you expect to see anywhere. As other reviewers have mentioned, the candy is $7 for half a pound and there are no scales except as read at the register, and very few people can accurately guess a half pound. I cannot vouch for the quality. For my particular disgruntled review, I am a mother of some teens, and one of them wanted to be independent and use their own money to buy a lot of candy, a shirt, and a few sodas. I'm pretty sure they spent about $60, not really realizing how much candy they had, but they made their choice. Then we went outside to the car, right outside the door without being in the handicapped parking, the teen set their bag down (nicely, not at all rough, I swear (I'm a voice on the internet, but you can trust me)), and one of the bottles exploded in the bag. New shirt drenched, broken glass, etc. Teen starts crying because it was a rough morning before this. The other parent tries to calm teen down, I take everything but the broken bottle out of the bag and go back in. I explain what happened to the cashier and ask if I can get a replacement soda and bag ( a few times, because she first didn't understand what I was saying, then that she was confused), finally, she tells me that she doesn't see how that is their problem and why would they give me a new bottle? I ask for just a bag, she gives me that, and then takes the broken bottle and bag back. She then says that she's sorry (which confuses me - are you at fault or are you not? It wasn't really the type of thing to say sorry for unless you feel like there is something to feel sorry for). I've done retail. I'm also aware of the prices of the merchandise at Sugar Kingdom, and what the likely margin is, even considering logistics of getting the products. You really can't comp a soda? With that margin, we wouldn't even think twice. I get that you don't want to give stuff away, but you just saw us leave with our purchases. How much you would lose for that one soda is negligible, and I'm handing you a dripping bag filled with glass. Those bottles don't normally explode when set down, some force normally needs to happen, so from my perspective, you sold me a defective product. I get that I am writing a petty novel of a review over 1 soda. When we get back home, I'll buy her a 6 pack of the stuff, because it may not be Faygo, but it's not really THAT special. I'm not Karen enough to ask to speak to a manager over 1 soda, but I am apparently petty enough to write this review that will only be read by someone else who had a bad experience and wants to be justified in giving their own bad review: to you, dear reader, feel free to give that nasty-gram review, let it out. Because the customer service is that bad, or the management is that bad, or something. We can stomp our feet and declare that we will never step foot in there again (because we're tourists and we won't be around to do so), but there will be new tourists tomorrow, so all we really have is these reviews that won't be read by anyone considering Sugar Kingdom as a destination, because that's not the kind of place it is. If you have low expectations, they will be met. If you have expectations of vague compassion, look elsewhere, there are tons of places around for sugar and ice cream, and I'm sure they come with better experiences. read more

Very clean place. Great atmosphere. Tons of candy and souvenirs. They even have beach items. No Ice skating during pandemic
