Although the drinks and service were outstanding the food was very average. The handpie was mushy and the patatas bravas far too salty. The Brussel sprouts seemed like a dish we could make at home. The entrance was incredibly hard to find as it is connected to different restaurants seemingly in between two places. Although the experience wasn't fully bad I did enjoy coming here for the first time to an extent, because it's one of the only nice restaurants in Greenville, I just wouldn't come here again though. I have been here several times in the past month or so and my favorites have been the steak, octopus, shrimp toast, and salads. Anything over the cabbage stir fry rice is going to need lots of salt, but when the fish is over the risotto it is delicious. The soft shell crab was delicious but over the bland cabbage stir fry which was a no-go, I asked if they could put it over risotto instead and they said no. The steak and potatoes was one of my favorites and cooked perfectly. Super cute inside and has a beautiful bar, service is good and fast. You just have to know what to order. read more

BEST DATE NITE!! I could not have picked a better place to spend our Friday date night. I'm so grateful we were able to make a reservation the same night as graduation, totally forgetting how busy it would be. For drinks, I had the pomegranate spritz which was the perfect amount of sweetness for me. I later had the empress which was a little too spirit forward for me, but very pretty (as it was purple). For starters, I enjoyed the scallops which was PHENOMENAL!!! I will definitely be back for those. I'm still salivating over the green coconut curry sauce. My bf has the cheese plate which he very much enjoyed with the variation of cheese and jams. For entree, I thoroughly enjoyed the trout which was cooked to perfect. The best feeling was the lightness and freshness of the dish.....never did I feel heavy after finishing the entire plate. Of course I couldn't resist dessert after a meal like this! The buttermilk pie was the perfect evening to such a beautiful night with my love. It was creamy, sweet, and savory. I truly can't wait to return. Great Greenville restaurant. We had the tuna tartare, redfish, and duck. The tuna tartare was great. Fish was fresh and great way to start our meal. Both the redfish and duck were cooked perfectly. Really enjoyed the duck; perfect sear and super tender. For both the duck and the redfish, which again were amazing, were muted by a large portion of sides which, at least for the duck, did not seem well paired. Just my opinion since the protein portion of the dish was excellent. Drinks were not great. Very bitter and almost medicinal in flavor. Dessert was also a let down. We had the oatmeal cream pie and the cookie portion was very hard. We did make reservations but open seating was available. We sat inside by the window. Very cozy setting. I will note since we did move that all the tables were very sticky and silverware was bent and heavily worn. Minor but with the prices I felt this is something that shouldn't be overlooked. We have been regular customers of Ford and Shep for over 5 years. Unfortunately today they came far below the standard of service they have provided in the past. My wife and I arrived early to our reservation 5:45, and there was only one other couple seated. Our host seated us in proximity to the only other couple in the room, in the middle of the floor. I politely requested to our server that we be seated at a different table, and pointed out several possible options against the wall and more intimate. The server left to get permission to do so. Out request was denied. He could not provide a reason. I frequently bring out of town guests and business associates to Ford and Shep. Moving forward I will have to seriously reconsider booking Ford and Shep given their apparent disregard for the customer. read more

I was working at East Carolina U and some locals invited me uptown for some craft beers. In asking around Ford + Shep across the street was highly recommended. I'm really glad I tried this place. I sat in one of the yellow velvet bar chairs and ordered the Shrimp + Mussels and a Bull Durham Light Ale. The food was absolutely fantastic in both taste and presentation. The shrimp were legitimate 2 or 3 biters, mussels cooked nicely, and presentation was great. Served over house made ricotta Ravioli with Pea Tendrils, Pecorino, and a lobster Newburg Sauce - this was a great combination in the right proportion. The place is loud but not in a bad way. You can carry on a conversation with your party and not have to worry about disrupting anybody with your awkward conversations. I've been wanting to try out Ford + Shep for some time and finally found an occasion that was special enough. I found the portions of food to be impressive for a restaurant of this caliber/concept and all the food came out hot and fresh. Is it enough to bring leftovers home? Probably not (if you order a normal amount of food per person, that is :P) We ordered two drinks, two appetizers, two entrees, and a dessert, and left feeling very full. I know the menu changes frequently and, this time around, I felt like the appetizers were the star; many of the appetizers sounded delicious but we narrowed our options down to two. I kind of wish I had foregone getting an entree and just ordered all the appetizers, though, so that might be what I do next time. The entrees were still good but a little blander than what I expected and didn't seem as balanced as the appetizers. I'm not sure when will be the next time we visit but I would definitely like the try Ford + Shep again. Truly spectacular experience on our first visit to Greenville. We loved the atmosphere, the service was incredibly friendly and attentive, and the food and drinks were spectacular! I had a French 75, my husband had a martini, and both were fantastic. We shared several small plates, and each one that came out was better than the one before. The brussels sprouts were just the right amount of crispy with a little kick, the baked brie and crab toast were incredible, and the tuna was out of this world, seared perfectly--even the kimchi was amazing. We don't live in Greenville, but we're already planning a trip back to try some of the menu we didn't get a chance to sample on this visit. Ford + Shep is tucked in the Uptown, Dickinson Ave district right next to Smashed Waffles. The entrance is to the side of Smashed and leads you down a hallway that almost makes you feel like you're entering a secret club. Once you get past the hipster, slightly pretentious foodie vibe, you can enjoy the modern, sleek, decor that makes the restaurant feel as if you've been transported to another city. This restaurant is a first for Greenville: from the decor to the menu, everything has been carefully thought out and executed with intention. The menu is "hyper seasonal" (read: trendy) and most importantly, local. It's on the upper end of what Greenville offers, with entrees ranging from $18-28, but if you're out to savor your food, the cost is justifiable. We got the NC cheese plate with peaches and honey, the sweet complimented the cheese well. I got the Mexican street corn bucatini and my husband got the porterhouse, both were tasty. Definitely a fun spot to check out, with an ever-changing menu you'll have a good reason to return. read more

The food was generally very good and the atmosphere is quite nice but I have three niggling gripes about this place that have taken me a while to figure out how to word in a positive fashion. 1. The prices are a bit steep, especially the mixed drinks. I'll admit I'm a little bit of a cheapskate towards cocktails, but with that said, I think $10 is too expensive for a mixed drink, however this place's mixed drinks are $12 to $16 which is completely unreasonable to me. With all the food plates being above $20 a piece, I expect the food to be perfect which rolls into my next points. 2. Everything we had was overseasoned. I'm one that often finds foods at restaurants to be underseasoned and I have quite a high tolerance for salt, but everything we had was too salty for me. 3. Lastly and probably the biggest problem I had: my pork chop was cooked to well done when I requested medium rare. When your pork chop is something like $28, it better be cooked properly. However I never trust any restaurant to send back food so I begrudgingly ate a well done piece of meat that likely could have been spectacular. I mentioned this to the server but I said I do not want to send it back. I do not know if he mentioned it to the cook or owner but that's a severe problem to me. Subgripe: I also mentioned we had a vegetarian in our group and the host said that wouldn't be a problem however everything on the menu had meat besides a salad. We asked the server about veggie options as a salad as the lone vegetarian option is unacceptable. They had a roasted cauliflower substitute for a meat curry dish. While that's fine, the vegetarian in my group hates cauliflower, but fortunately likes curry so she gambled on getting it. I am completely shocked by the lack of vege options they have here especially based on the upscale hipster vibe of this place, and I'm a meataholic. read more
