When I drove in to the place, I was very close to turn and run. :) I am glad I did not. Nicely done inside, good bar area, good seating areas, nice decor. However, the best part was the service. For the course of a dinner at least four times service staff stopped by and asked if everything was to hour satisfaction. It was, the shrimp and steak appetizer was up to par, the ribeye steak was cooked just as I ordered it. Reasonable menu at the bar, they even had Kentucky Trace allocated bourbons - I had Eagle Rare. Let me preface by saying I don't typically write restaurant reviews unless the place is absolutely fabulous or horribly bad. Let me also say that I am the consummate "foodie", my life has been driven by my passion for all types of food. When I dine, I try to go into the restaurant with no expectations, so you can pretty much trust what I am telling you about the experience. With that being said, we had just moved to Greenville a few days before and decided we needed to treat ourselves after the week of moving and unpacking. We decided on The Rickhouse, notwithstanding the fact that my first name is Rick! Anyway, we were sat immediately, and were approached quickly by our waiter, Christian. In short, Christian was fabulous throughout the entire meal, even considering the fact that it was only his first week on the job. He certainly has a flair for waiting tables. We ordered drinks and I have had a fair amount of Grey Goose dirty martinis in my life and let me tell you, the bartender knocked this one out of the ballpark. One of the best I have ever had anywhere! We ordered an app, the Chef Crab Dip and it was wonderful. Not too crabby, perfect blend of cheeses and pita chips that I am pretty sure are house-made. I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu which was absolutely out of this world! I got to sample the other two entrees at the table, which were the Garlic Parm Chicken Pasta and the special that evening, which was a bacon wrapped Filet Mignon topped with a bacon jam. Both of them were also to die for! We didn't have dessert as we were stuffed already. The bill was $189, which I didn't consider bad as we had an app, three entrees and six drinks. While some might consider that a lot for dinner, I'm also the guy that doesn't bat an eye at spending $600 for a dinner for two at a gourmet French restaurant. Anyway, I can't recommend The Rickhouse enough. Everything from start to finish was just about as perfect of an experience as you can get at a restaurant! This restaurant is consistently good. The crab dip, Tuna, and Stan The Man appetizers are delicious and we often just have one of these for a light meal. Our favorites are the Daughter- Shrimp tortellini Wife - Salmon Me- Mahi Ask for Alyssa. She is on top of her game for service and makes sure you enjoy a wonderful night out. This place doesn't know whether it's up scale dining or casual hangout. Based on reviews I thought it was going to be a nicer place but it really was just a casual restaurant. I had the filet Oscar and it was good. Wish I had more balanced plate. As you can see I had exactly 3 asparagus.... Idk who okayed that. But then 2 large scoops of potatoes like make it make sense. The prices were high, they were leaning fine dining even though the restaurant itself is not. I think this is more drinks and apps type of place. That was the vibe. Everyone was in jeans and it was a tad noisy. The staff was friendly, most of them looked like college kids. I also had some type of cheesecake for dessert and it was pretty good. Honestly my husband and I were skeptical to try, just because some reviews weren't great. However, what we've learned from reviews is that we still need to have our own experiences. We went to the Rickhouse for Father's Day dinner. I did make a reservation just because we've never been but I don't think it was necessarily needed. Our service was a 10/10, I wish I could remember our waiters name but we sat at the first both by the bar. Great vibes, loved the atmosphere of a distillery. Onto the food, we got crab dip as an appetizer, not bad but definitely not crab forward. It was more of like a spinach dip with crab sprinkled in it. My husband got the pork chop 10/10, he loved everything about it. I wanted the Ricks Pasta Paradise but the waiter informed us they were out of lemon juice that went in the pasta so recommended I get another entree. I got the new Creamy Parmesan Chicken Pasta 8/10, the chicken was a little greasier than I like but still very good. VERY few people in the restaurant at 6:00 on a Saturday evening = red flag. Maybe the locals know something that others don't. Ordered the brisket and a ribeye. Food took a very long time to come out. The steak was cooked medium rare as requested but the "flame kissed" char-grilled taste overwhelmed the steak. I also had to add a significant amount of salt to eat it. The brisket was mainly fat and gristle smothered in a sweet BBQ sauce. Not very edible and we should have mentioned it sooner. The server was nice about it and very pleasant to deal with. The twice baked potato was great, but I wish it didn't come with scallions. I picked those off. The broccoli was good. We were told that they use their discretion's To pick who they add an automatic gratuity. They base it on the way you look... example... college student, minority or a younger crowd. The chicken was cooked to perfection. The mash was hardy and still maintained some of the integrity of the potatoes. I personally don't like when my mash is mush! Food was fantastic with one caveat, make sure it's been thoroughly brought to temp. The grits were look warm, but the heat of the sauce mitigated it. The veggies in my hubby's plate were almost cold, but the flavors were all there. I assume they plate the grits and veggies in preparation for the chicken and the gravy/shrimp but their prep took a lil longer than anticipated. My server was Alyssa. She's a pleasure and walked me through the menu and helped me select a beverage as well. Pricing is conducive of the service, environment and food. I honestly can't wait to return. read more

Found this gem as I wanted something outside the usual chains for brunch. The atmosphere is lovely with beautiful rustic lighting and decor. The staff pleasantly welcomed us as we sat down. We were made aware of the new brunch menu that included a nice selection of mimosas, of which I had the Hibiscus Rose. It was very sour so it took a while for me to sip. The sweet tea is on the pretty sweet side but heyyyyyy.....we are in the South baby. For my meal, I had the ginger bourbon chicken and waffles. You can't really taste the ginger which is a good or bad thing, depending or your like or dislike for it. The chicken was super tender. My husband, son and I went in on a Sunday to have brunch around 12:30. When we got there, the front door was locked. We stood there for a couple minutes trying to figure out what was going on- the parking lot was full and we could see people inside. Another patron opened the door for us. The hostess popped up and informed us they were closed. I looked around bewildered. My husband pointed out that it was within business hours. She explained that they are a "privately owned business" and they can close when they're slow if they choose too. There were more cars in the parking lot than we normally see on a weekday- they clearly were not "slow". It's an odd way to run a business- turning away patrons. I think I've been here 6 times now for various reasons. It has never been my choice, always picked by someone else. I have yet to have anything truly good. I've had salads, steaks, chicken, pasta, and seafood. All under or inconsistently or oddly seasoned, all meats always overcooked, dishes with cheese floating in grease. For the price, it's horrendous. Service is always terrible, furniture needs to be replaced, bathrooms consistently dirty, and way overpriced for the quality of food. The drinks used to be really good, but even those have gone downhill. I'd suggest pairing down the menu to then learn to make fewer things really well, but I doubt they'd listen. Horrible. The restaurant was fairly slow when I went in and most of the customers were hanging out and drinking. Unfortunately, the staff was just sitting around hanging out drinking. They seem more concerned with flirting with each other and some of the customers than they did actually waiting on tables. There was not even a modicum of professionalism by anyone that I experience that evening. The owner should be quite embarrassed as should the general manager. The Rickhouse over all was a quite pleasant experience. The server and who I assume as the manager where very attentive to me during my whole dinning experience. Scallops where cooked amazingly, most places over cooke them, whoever was working sauté nailed it! Steak was cooked to the perfect Medium Rare temperature that I asked for. The cheese sauce on the twice bake potato really did it for me. Mac n Cheese was sub par but the cream corn was a hit. Salmon was a little over cooked for my liking but wasn't a deal breaker. Dessert was fresh and delightful, make sure to save room for it. I had two old fashions and a pint of beer that I forgot the name of but paired well with my ribeye. We had to flag our waitress down a couple times and we waited 15 minutes for just water while the restaurant had almost no one in it. We had a party of 5 and it says on the menu that on parties of 6+ there is an automatic gratuity. When the bill came, there was a tip already added which surprised us. When we brought it to her attention that there were not 6 of us, she said, "im not saying you guys wouldn't tip, but it's up to the server's discretion to add a tip". she did come show us where that was in the menu but the service did not suffice a tip being added before our knowledge. It's rare for me to feel compelled enough to go out of my way and leave a review for a restaurant, but since eating at The Rickhouse last week, I haven't stopped thinking about it. (Not exactly for the right reasons, though.) Here's the thing about The Rickhouse - the food was not bad at all. Actually, everything we ate was pretty tasty. The issue is that the restaurant seems to be masquerading as a "fine dining" spot while neglecting to offer any sort of "fine dining" experience. I should have known something was up when my party was immediately greeted by huge "Rickhouse Policies" signs, inside and out. I have been to hundreds of restaurants in my life, but I can't count those listing "Restaurant Policies" on more than one hand. The rest of my party was quick to remark on this, as well - just...bizarre. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and figured "hey, maybe they just deal with a lot of demanding clientele!" When checking in with the hostess, she was kind enough to immediately prepare us a table, however we were told that we couldn't actually be seated until a few more members of our party arrived. That's fine - I get that everywhere has their policies (trust me, it's hard to forget the policies here), but in a half empty restaurant, one might be inclined to find this a little bit silly. (I put absolutely no blame on the hostess here - she was perfectly friendly and everyone has to do their job as they're told, so I get it.) Once seated, we put in for a round of drinks and appetizers. Now we can get down to the actual "dining experience." I will immediately note that our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive - she made us all feel welcome and comfortable. Food came out quickly, drinks were kept full, and it was all done with a smile. Drinks were the highlight of the meal by a long shot - everyone at the table agreed that they were the standout item. (Give your bartenders a raise - seriously - they are crushing it.) Appetizers were fine - we were hungry and they got the job done. We ordered our entrees and they were delivered swiftly - everything was fresh and appeared to be cooked to order - we all enjoyed it pretty thoroughly. So why the negative tone of the review? The prices! The vibe! I will happily pay top dollar for food that knocks my socks off, but despite enjoying everything we ate, the whole party agreed that we could never see ourselves returning unless it was for drinks. The Rickhouse isn't offering anything that isn't found elsewhere in Greenville, but the prices are probably 35-40% higher than the competition (and while the food was good, trust me, it wasn't 35-40% better than the other spots in town). Between the overpriced menu, the overbearing policies plastered everywhere, and the incredibly short open hours (I checked online - 4-8PM? I mean, if that's a statement on workers' rights, you have my full support, but the rest of the experience doesn't seem to push my assumption in that direction), I just want to know...why? Did someone tell you "price it and they will pay?" It's just baffling. This would be a really solid spot for a casual dinner - fresh food, good drinks, nice decor - but it seems to be too busy cosplaying as some type of upscale foodie joint that it's very difficult to justify returning when the same menu can be found at a fraction of the price all over Greenville. I don't know Rick, but a little housekeeping will go a long way in cementing this as an accessible Greenville staple. read more
