I just happened to stumble upon Pomierski & Son Funeral Home while delivering funeral flowers for a very old friend of mine, whose brother had passed away. I was greeted by Felice, one of the owners that helped me with the flowers I had brought for the wake. She was a lovely, kind and a very professional business lady. Immediately, I felt welcomed by one of the owners, even though I was only a vendor coming in the rear entrance with a floral delivery. If someone is this kind at the back flower delivery door, just imagine how empathetic and wonderful they must be to deal with if you are a bereaved family member. I can just tell, this place treats its customers very well and regards them highly. So, after delivering the flowers through the back... I went in the front door to pay my respects to the family of their deceased brother. After speaking with family members, I became so overwhelmed at the true beauty of the interior of this funeral parlor. My eyes were taking in all the glorious, well preserved woodwork, stained glass, sculptured plaster treatments dating back to before the 1920's. I was just amazed at the mint condition and the care that this funeral home has taken to keep all this fine craftsmanship of skilled artisans, whose trades have probably long disappeared, in such an extraordinarily flawless manner. I was struck with awe. I can't imagine a soul, not appreciating the architectural majesty that this unsuspecting funeral home has preserved for all of us to behold to this very day. Anyone with the least bit of respect for the past, surely would appreciate such a treasure as not to disrespect its place in time and history. I must compliment this funeral home for holding onto such a gem without giving sway to the many trends and fads of past decades. The calls to remodel and modernize over the years, must have been plentiful. For in such logic, all of this fine quality workmanship, in impeccable condition would have been destroyed forever. Thank you!... Pomierski Family for preserving history. Felice was so nice to talk with me further, at length, inside and point out the hand carved angels that are part of this unique interior. The angels are her favorite touch, I can tell. I would have taken pictures but with a wake in progress, I could not have done so. Pomierski's is stunning, a jewel carefully crafted of stained glass and wood. A lovely chapel, comfortable chairs for family and friends, a separate room with plenty of seating for coffee and small meals. A family in the downtown area of Chicago, south side, or even north would be well served to choose Pomierski's for a service for their friend or family member.

Also conveniently located next to a floral shop that specializes in funeral services floral. There are two rooms so it could be that two events are happening at the same time which feels a little cramped since there is only one entrance and the neighboring area is on the more congested side (but expected in the city). This spot is no frills spot, not necessarily updated, but the upkeep has been fine. The casket cars are well kept. Staff was very friendly and professional. They were able to bring in additional seating and have the funeral stickers for our cars ready for our family when heading to the cemetery. They were also able to assist police to direct traffic as well during the funeral procession. Overall a positive experience, but an emotional celebration of life.

When I came to Chicago years ago, Mt. Carmel was the cemetery I most wanted to visit (if…read moreinterested, check out my review). Following that visit, I crossed the street and entered Queen of Heaven, a more modern (consecrated in 1947) resting place consisting of 470 acres. As I've noted in other reviews, I've always been fascinated by organized crime history, and Chicago's organized crime is an integral and prominent (if often unwanted) part of that city's history. I always try to conduct myself respectfully and discreetly in cemeteries, knowing these are holy places where people come to mourn. The overwhelming majority of the "permanent residents" of Queen of Heaven were honest, hard-working people who tried their best to make their way in the world. The cemetery boasts the largest Catholic mausoleum in the world, and it's indeed an impressive structure, a work of architectural splendor. Inside, I found the vaults of Tony Accardo, perhaps the most successful and powerful Mafia boss in history; Paul Ricca; Sam Battaglia; and Fiore Buccieri. I had a camera with me but I didn't take any pictures. Why? Because there were security cameras everywhere and I didn't want anyone to misinterpret my purpose, and think I was being "disrespectful." The Chicago mob was unique in being surprisingly egalitarian, a meritocracy (a large number of its reps in top positions were Jews, Irishmen, Greeks, Bohemians, a Welshman, etc.; their abilities counted more than their ethnicity), but they were also known for a countless number of savage "hits." I didn't actually think anyone was going to take a blowtorch to me for snapping a photo of Joe Batters' private vault. Still, I wasn't about to press my luck. Outside, it was more relaxed. I found the grave of "Mad Sam" DeStefano, a figure of particular fascination for me. Physically a cross between Fred Flintstone and John Belushi, reading about some of his "antics" had caused me to laugh out loud. He forced a court hearing for a $10 traffic ticket, had himself carried into court on a stretcher, shouting through a bullhorn, "Birmingham, Alabama, here I come...We are living in a Gestapo country...Hello to all the stool pigeons in the witness quarters..." It wasn't all laughs. FBI Agent Bill Roemer called him "the worst torture-murderer in Chicago's history." When Sam's wife Anita angered him, he kidnapped a black man walking on the street at gunpoint, and forced the man to rape his wife as punishment for his wife, who now lies buried beside him. Does she rest in peace, or does she dread the thought of the coming "Day of Judgment" when the dead rise from their graves and she has to see Mad Sam's ugly face once again? Hopefully, if there is a God, He'll spare her that. Mad Sam was shotgunned to death in 1973 while sweeping out his garage. The man believed to be wielding that shotgun is buried across the street, literally a stone's throw away. Tony Spilotro, the hitman portrayed by Joe Pesci in "Casino." The man who once squeezed a man's head in a vise until the man's eyes popped out of his head in order to extract information. On "Judgement Day," will Mad Sam see him, ignore Anita, and shout out, "You, you're the dirty ______ who shot me!" In another direction is the impressive monument to James Torello. If you read "The Exorcist," Blatty quoted a surreptitiously recorded conversation where Torello described torturing a 300-pound loan shark to death: "Jackson was hung up on the meat hook. He was so heavy he bent it. He was on that thing 3 days before he croaked...We tossed water on him to give the (cattle) prod a better charge, and he's screamin'..." I'm a non-Catholic, and Yelp is not the place to argue theological issues such as faith, grace, redemption, etc. But I couldn't help thinking about such issues as I walked around this beautiful, peaceful cemetery. Did the Catholic hierarchy really think Mad Sam "made his peace" with God in the seconds before that fatal shotgun blast? He's lying in sacred, consecrated ground. Supposedly, Spilotro asked to say a prayer (and was denied) before he was beaten to death, but does that transform a serial-killing monster into someone worthy of Heaven? As another, non-Catholic example-- "Tex" Watson, Manson's chief killer, has his own prison ministry and claims to be "saved." Is he sincere? What if he is? Someone who can stick a knife 30-something times into an 8-month pregnant woman permanently severs whatever tenuous links he may still have to humanity, as far as I'm concerned, and obviates any possibility of redemption or forgiveness. To me, that's a spiritual brokenness that can never be fixed, whether it's Tex, or Charlie, or Mad Sam, or Tony the Ant. I don't mean to sound overly harsh in discussing this cemetery...other cemeteries, religious and non-sectarian alike, have evil people buried in them...but these were the thoughts occupying me as I wandered about these peaceful acres. Maybe that's the reason I still identify as an agnostic.

My mom has been buried in this cemetery since 2023. Every time we place a decoration, such as…read moreflowers, they end up disappearing. According to the rules, ground staked solar lights are permitted but when we added them to surround my mother's grave along with some artificial flowers, they were DESTROYED (a few graves nearby also had them like this and their's were untouched). They were piled up and broken and some of the stake vases with the artificial flowers were also destroyed, it seemed like they had been kicked and tossed around. Some of the flowers were missing too. I really wish I took a picture of the mess because it was TRULY DISRESPECTFUL. What made me and my family so angry was that it seems to only happen to us in our section. Everybody else around us have their decorations perfectly placed and not touched. We called to complain and they did absolutely nothing, only said some of the things were removed because they didn't meet the requirements when none of the decorations went past the size limit or were glass!

I was unhappy when my mother passed (Nov 2016) to have received an invoice for $1000 more then what I was quoted. The casket price was 2,000 despite the conversation I wanted to stay around 1,000. Both my Aunt and I had called George and my understanding was there was going to be an adjustment on the quote (500 but still it was something.) Recently, I found out my father had received the bill, and paid the full amount and there was no adjustment. That's fine and the service was okay, but don't lie to me about it, or if something comes up, inform me so I am not surprised. I will try to find someone different for our family in the future.

All of my close family members are buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL. As soon as I uttered St. Mary's, I was shut down. My mother's wake and funeral were in 1995, and my brother's wake and funeral were held at T&K in 2017. There was no problem, and our family was satisfied with everything. Both of these times, our dealings were with the same woman. My less than satisfactory experience with my husband's wake and funeral were overseen by a man (I won't even use his name). I've instructed both of my children that when I die, DO NOT hold my wake and funeral at Thomspon & Kuenster.

My family I…read morehad the unfortunate task of organizing a wake and funeral for a loved one and happened upon Richard-Midway. It was actually the only local one we called (loved one passed away elsewhere) and we were certain right away. Jeff is the best at what he does. He went above and beyond to assist my family through this whole process, our meetings with him were hours long. I'm not familiar with any other experience to compare to, but he really did make it as smooth as possible under the circumstances. He facilitated the pick up of our loved one over an hour away without issue. He allowed us a private viewing before our loved one went to the crematory, to say our goodbyes. He reviewed all the necessary steps and kept us informed every step of the way. The evening of the visitation/wake we were greeted and assisted by Jeanette who was wonderful as well and really compassionate to our family and guests. They had all of our flowers set up beautifully when we arrived. It was nice to have the use of the whole funeral home for our service because there were small kids who were running all over the place and I imagine would be disruptive if a second family was also in the building having a service at the same time. They have a refreshment room in the basement with an automatic coffee dispensing machine in a room with some tables with chairs which was nice also. My family brought donuts. Our service was 3 hours which was the perfect length. The next day we had a funeral mass at Our Lady of the Snows church to which Jeff had everything brought over (we didn't have to take it from the funeral home the night before back home and to the church the next morning, he took care of everything) which was a huge help. Jeff did the readings for the mass as well. He was very warm and kind with my family and guests. God really made a special one with Jeff, we really appreciate him and all of his work on our family's arrangements. It really made a heartbreaking situation more of a beautiful farewell. We are entirely grateful for that. Thank you Richard-Midway.

Our Dad…read morerecently passed and we decided to hold his service here, as this was his choice for both of his parents. This is a small family run home. My sister made the initial phone calls, and all went smooth. We met to finalize the arrangements on a Sunday morning and I really had no idea what to expect. Personally, I'd heard stories of inflated prices, funeral directors working the family's grief to leverage additional services and costs. NONE of those horror stories happened here. Andy was kind and businesslike- just what you need in this time. We had the facts, we had the choices we could make and he guided us through drafting the death notice. Everything came in at a cost that was at or below what we had expected. What impressed me most of all was how we were treated and even more, how my father was treated. We were given the space, and respect this occasion in our lives deserved. We were not directed or told how to do anything. The day of the service the gentleman that was there with us was also kind and helped us to give Dad a good sendoff. We were offered help in arranging pictures, flowers and music to our liking. Thank you Richard Midway for your service! You helped us in our time of need and I'm sure Dad would have loved it.

They have a…read moregorgeous marble statue that has been encased in glass or lucite container to keep it from damage. The flower carvings are beautiful. A few forgotten stones covered in vines and some surrounded by bushes. Beautiful symbolism and and epithet that said " A good time was had by all " Someone had decorated a plot for Halloween and Day of the Dead. The Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery was next door and very over grown. We weren't able to go inside.

I've often seen a large white statue enclosed in a glass case so today I took a walk to investigate. I found the statue with the name Raithel on one side and Sei getreu bis in den Tod or Be thou faithful undo death on the front of the monument. I'm still curious - more investigation to be done...
