They have a spacious one floor operation (i.e., their lounge is on the main floor) and a relatively modernized, cozy, and comfortable interior. There is one funeral parlor room and it was spacious with comfortable seating. The burial for our Chinese family friend was held at the usual Mount Auburn cemetery in Stickney. They have a decent size parking lot, but if it is filled, they (or the enforcers I'm told) allow you to park in the street for free as long as you have an orange funeral sticker applied. This area is set up with the usual metered street parking otherwise. Another nice touch for those attending the burial service is that while the service is going on, they remove the orange stickers off your car for you, and I appreciated that because they applied 4 of them on my car. I also spoke to the current director Michael Coletta (and there are probably several generations of them), and who was a personable fellow, and when asked he told me they do about 25-30% Chinese business. Anyway, I found them to be a good competitor to the better known Dalcamo Funeral Home in the area, and competition is a good thing for us consumers.

Granted, I stood in the main parlor, due to other people in other parts of the funeral home, but I saw enough to know, this place is still the real deal of the past. Nice to see that it is inviting to families and not so sterile like the newer funeral homes of today have become, or for that matter, are. Good size parking lot and still old school.

All of my close family members are buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL. As soon as I uttered St. Mary's, I was shut down. My mother's wake and funeral were in 1995, and my brother's wake and funeral were held at T&K in 2017. There was no problem, and our family was satisfied with everything. Both of these times, our dealings were with the same woman. My less than satisfactory experience with my husband's wake and funeral were overseen by a man (I won't even use his name). I've instructed both of my children that when I die, DO NOT hold my wake and funeral at Thomspon & Kuenster.

Great levels of hospitality and it is a warm, inviting environment. What I do recommend that I think is the major issue here is that if you know that the person has a large family please carpool over here because parking is limited and I had to see people park half a mile away or across the street to make their way into the funeral home.

This funeral home is nice but very simple as far as decoration. It seems like they got stuck in a time warp from the 70's. With its paneled walls and carpeting. Although still a bit dark for my taste. They do have lamps all around, but I think that makes it seem older. Most of the wakes I have come to here are from the neighborhood. Older Polish families, but with the influx of Latinos, times are a changing. I like the fact that although parking lot is small, its still can hold at least 30 cars which of course is not bad. The service was simple, they put snacks in the kitchen (which also is a bit on the older side), and well what else can I say. Would I have my own family for a service here? Ehhh, probably not, but it is simple and I am sure inexpensive. I asked my friend (yes we have a pretty good relationship that I can ask), if her family spent a lot here. She stated the reason they had it at this particular home is because their prices are compatible. But there you go.

We visited a few other locations in the area and were greeted in a very "business" manner. Although we were trying to fulfill our uncles wishes by planning ahead, some of the nearby funeral homes refused to discuss options in detail or show us caskets because he had not passed away yet. Despite my sister having legal documents to prove she was his power of attorney, one gentleman in particular told us that one of my uncles siblings had to be present to make arrangements as that was his next of kin. We left the location feeling very disrespected and disappointed. Im glad we left because upon entering Modell we were greeted by Mari. Our experience from that moment on was one we will never forget. She was very helpful, compassionate and patient. She took her time to show us around, answered our questions and never once did she question our intentions. She allowed us to pick out every detail without asking us for a dime. We then met Gloria and we felt right at home. My uncle ended up passing away later that week and we were glad were able to plan ahead. I can't imagine making arrangements during those difficult times. All in all I have much respect for this place and all of its staff. My uncles services were perfect and Gloria did such an amazing job with his makeup. Modell is family owned and we were treated like family from the moment we walked in, to when they picked up his body at the hospital, to the moment he was laid to rest. This is a massive cemetery with so many stories to tell. I was here for over an hour, visiting the…read moreHaymarket Martyrs' Monument, the grave of Emma Goldman, the Druid Monument and the final resting place of radio story teller Paul Harvey. It is in excellent condition though a few of the lanes could use some repaving and yes, it's super annoying that the bridge is closed for repair because it's a heck of a drive to get to the other side of the river to see the rest of the cemetery. While I was here, I spotted a herd of 7 or 8 deer including a six-point buck. They're just chilling and I hope they stay here a while as it's safe for them. (Deer love the flowers people leave on graves. It's like candy to them.) If you're here to visit family or friends, I am sorry for your loss. If you're here being a tourist as I was, please be respectful of the folks who are visiting. This is an active cemetery that still has current interments. Yield to funeral processions. Mr. Thomas and his son did a top-notch job of restoring my mother. She suffered from a long-term illness and her post-mortem body was shockingly thin and no longer looked like herself. At her viewing, mom looked twenty years younger and asleep versus deceased. The "undertaker" used very little makeup and created a great natural appearance. I am still awaiting the receipt of all of our death certificates (3 out of 5 were ready about two weeks after the funeral, though I opted to wait for the arrival of all 5). This is the only thing that held me back from the five stars I believe they may have otherwise earned. I highly recommend Midwest Memorial Chapel.
