Darla (formerly known as sugar lily) the dog we adopted from FHPR
    Zoie F.

About a month ago my boyfriend and I were walking by the adoptions at the Porter Ranch petco. I told him I always get sad seeing all the animals that need a home and went to go put some money in the donation box. We decided to take a look at all the dogs and cats there and then we saw her! In the corner was the most calm, beautiful, quiet cream colored chihuahua, like totally just chilling. Whilst all the other animals were excited and being uber cute she was just napping. Something about this dog just clicked for us. We asked about the adoption process and were given a business card, a brief rundown, and told to email. We couldn't get this dog out of our minds and emailed later that night. The adoption form was really long and detailed and after completing it we were told we were a god match. We were told we could pick up *our* dog at the next weeks adoption fair. We were also told the items we need to get (food, crate, leash/harness/tags, etc). The next weekend came and we were so excited. We went to go pick up our dog and were given her vet records (complete w/ updated shots), and some complementary treats for her. The adoption donation/fee was $250 and honestly this dog is worth a million times that. She is the most cuddly, sweetest, floppy ear-Ed charmer ever. You can tell she is totally excited to have a happy loving home (we were told she was with them 2+ years after being abandoned). The more she is with us the more comfortable she gets. Sooooooo in love!

I adopted a very badly abused 6 month old pitbull mix from them 5 years ago. She had lived through extensive head trauma, and lost her eye. I wanted to help. When I got her she smelled horrible, from the inside out. She was afraid of everyone!! It took a lot of work to help her relax and learn to trust. She was my second dog. I also have a 10 year old paraplegic French bulldog (at the time 5 years old). My rescue pit, Taco, is a beautiful loving amazing little girl. But she was always a handful. My life revolved around her needs. She was very HIGH strung and had unpredictable behavior. About a year in, completely out of the blue, she attacked my paraplegic. It was the most traumatic thing to experience. I was inconsolable. But luckily I was there to break it up right away. It was not her character trait to be "aggressive". I of course reached out to the charity as it's in their contract to take her back if there's a problem. I needed support and wasn't sure what to do. They told me to separate them for a bit and rub lavender oil on her . Over the next few years it happened 4 more times. Every time it had happened I reached out for help. At one point they sent me a "behavioralist", who came and told me she's frustrated and to play tug with her, and have her bark etc. to move through the anxiety. Meanwhile my poor handicapped dog has had her ear canal punctured repeatedly, and almost died. Each time I'm left with endless vet bills etc. I had also spoken with other behavioralist s who told me "this is not a training thing, you're basically waiting for her to kill your other dog". I had taken taco to get Prozac, cbd, every natural option out there. I had lived my life constantly keeping a watchful eye on them, keeping them separated. The times I felt I couldn't do it anymore, the charity told me she'll live the rest of her life in a cage! So of course I kept trying. The last straw was when I moved from my house to an apartment, I was walking taco for 5 miles a day...and it was so stressful bc she would lunge at every dog, motorcycle, skateboard. Then she attacked my now 10 year old paraplegic 2 days in a row. It had never happened that close together before. I reached out to them once again, clearly beyond distraught. They asked me for a write up on her to help list her. I also put it on my social media. I told the charity I was so afraid they were going to leave her in a cage, they replied with pictures of a nice yard. Then a friend from my social media reached out. Her family was willing to take her, so I decided that could be a fit, as she had spent a week with them before while I was away. I called the charitys "behavioralist" to go and access how they would be as a fit. I also stressed to the family at great length, the risk that taco presents, seeing as they have a dog. Instead of the behavioralist explaining how to avoid conflict and manage her anxiety, he told them that it wouldn't ever happen again. The attacks where bc of me and my energy. He also told the family that it wouldn't happen, it was just me. They believed him. And of course, taco attacked their larger pitbull. Both dogs ended up in the emergency room. It's been 5 weeks since they have had her, and 4 brutal dog fights have happened. The new family also began reaching out to this charity. They once again sent their behavioralist, now saying it's bc I gave her such a stressful life, despite my other dogs being perfectly happy and flourishing even while handicapped. He offered the same "tools", play tug etc. Days later, another unexpected attack. The family decided they are no longer able to care for her and aren't getting a response from the charity, they asked me to reach out. So I did, the "president" went on to say that she had found a home for taco and I backed out previously, so she'll be in a kennel until they find a good home. But I had never been told they had a home or backed out. She sent 2 screenshots as if they are to look like one conversation. The first one is a text communication I had, where I'm asked to make sure they won't lock her in a cage, to which they sent pics of a nice yard. (See photo for rest of review)

So I have mixed thoughts here. On one hand: I love the kitten I adopted dearly and I can't imagine life without her. On the other hand, I was told she was healthy at the time of adoption. She was... not. She was badly underweight and had a truly horrific case of lungworm; upon seeing her x-rays, her vet wasn't sure she'd make it. When I emailed for previous medical records, FHPR (South) asked if I had sought a second opinion and that she wasn't underweight, she was just small. At the time, she had seen an ER vet, her regular vet and an internist, all of whom agreed she had barely any lung function. While she had insurance, it wouldn't cover treatments because the condition showed up on her first post-adoption exam (so it was pre-existing). The good news: six months later, she's been treated and is a happy, healthy, bouncy cat. (Also not small; once healthy, she grew into 9.5 lbs of lean, mean cardboard biting machine.) The bad news: I wasn't really expecting to adopt a kitten with 3k of medical bills in the first six months? So, wouldn't trade the cat for the world, but I wouldn't go back to the rescue.

Unlike some whining Yelpers, we had a great experience with Forever Home Pet Rescue - South. Yes, SOUTH. They operate the adoptions from a Petco in Long Beach over by El Dorado Park. Gloria handled our application over email and did it in one day. They next day was a Saturday and we met our new cat - a 9 month old long hair mix who has been re-named Odin. He is silver blue with gold eyes. Right now, he is a total lap cat until he gets used to the house environment. The donation was $150 and we were given his full vet records, including neutering and microchip registration. He was in a foster home for some time while they assured themselves of his health since he was reportedly picked up as a stray and was about to be euthanized when rescued. Many other people were picking up their new adoptees that morning. One person drove from Santa Cruz the night before to adopt a beautiful 4 year old Norwegian Forest cat. Forever Home Pet Rescue is doing a great job and should be respected for their commitment to saving animals that thoughtless people have abandoned in many instances. The self-centered Yelpers who gave one star reviews because they did not get instant gratification from their emails are the kinds of people who should not adopt a pet. Yelpers who gave indignant one star reviews because the rescue folks didn't like the potential home environment, should just move on with their 'TUDES. Alternatively, these whining Yelpers should be euthanized for being hyper-critical of volunteers. Here is Odin after 7 months of loving care, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/forever-home-pet-rescue-castaic?select=7pqKvmQAo7Cs6QZnb-wEqA \

My little baby (NOT from this shelter)

Read some other reviews before trying to adopt from this shelter. They absolutely suck. They denied my application, without any explanation. I tried to email again, and tried to reason and provide them with more info, no more response. In the meantime it's been almost 4 weeks since I submitted my application, and the poor kitten is still listed as available. It seems like they're using their non-profit status as a license to discriminate. Not interested in finding a forever home to their pets, just casting judgement on the applicants based on the information on the application. Not even trying to have a phone call, or a house visit. In the meantime, I have adopted a kitten from a different shelter. He is a cute, happy little guy, and he is thriving. I have no idea why they seemed our family not worthy of a kitten.

It was Christmas time and I was on the race to get the perfect toy for my niece. I had been looking for a dog for quite some time and had even went through some heartbreak regarding fake breeders online. I somehow ended up in Porter Ranch. I saw the dog adoption and figured in couldn't hurt to take a look. They pulled him out for me and I played with him for a little while. I totally fell head over heels in love. I decided to go do my shopping at the store and to see how I felt after. I came back and still felt for him. I went and did more shopping and came back. That went on and then I realize that I was shopping just so I can see the dog after. I asked the lady how I go about adopting him. She told me that I had to fill out an application. Which was long. But I understood that they just wanted to find the right match. I received an email saying that everything was good pending the home check. They came a couple of days before Christmas and we received an all good on our home check and our little guy was able to stay with us that night. Needless to say we haven't spent a night away from each other since. :) As Stacia mentions Foreverhome is ran completely by volunteers. Jennifer who is the head of the organization works tirelessly for the animals. After adopting my little Elton I have discovered a whole new love for dogs. I wish I could be there for animals like Jennifer is. Even years after I have adopted Elton I still go to her with questions. Which she answers promptly and pleasantly. As long as Jennifer is running things. Foreverhome is the only rescue that I will adopt from. I know that she truly cares about the animals and only wants the best for them. Think about it this way. If Jennifer was driving and decided not to stop and catch a stray dog running around. I wouldn't have my son. Thank you Jennifer for stopping.

Hart Park. Grassy & shady. Accessible restrooms. Parking wasn't a problem since we came early. Found a public lot 2 blocks away. Our Ruxin is apparently tired of his current dog food so we wanted to pick up some samples to see if he'd show interest in something new. Came home with all kinds of food & treats. The various vendors were great about explaining their products & letting us know where we can buy them locally or online. We pup-sit our son's Corgis often and these samples will be shared with them. One of them has a really fussy tummy & most of the samples are organic. Several veterinary offices also had booths there if you live locally & want to meet the staff. There was a shots clinics also which had a long line. Someone told us the various shots were low-cost or possibly free. There's also pet-themed art & crafts being sold. I bought some dog toys at very reasonable prices. We seriously considered adopting another JackChi, but Ruxin was being a weenie. He wasn't being nice to the other dog at all. Additional notes: Dogs must be well-behaved and on leash. Please bring poop bags. Small dogs should be carried or in a stroller. It got crowded very quickly. Our lil' guy got his tail stepped on, so the hubby carried him for the rest of our stay. There's donation boxes situated here and there. The donations help to keep this festival free for all of us. We had a great time and will definitely want to come back next year.

Had no interest in a replacement for her until we thought more and more about it. My wife and I have so much love for each other, we needed to share that with another dog! After all, a house with no dog is no home! We thought about getting a nice puppy, but then thought about saving a shelter dog, and that seemed like the thing we wanted to do now. Enter Robert and Yana. Saw a pure white Maltese online at their rescue that we thought could be a candidate. Drove over there and there were at least 50 dogs there, horses, and all kinds of animals! The Maltese, named Coco, as it turns out, had been a stud for making puppies at a puppy mill. Never got any love or attention. Was treated badly. Owner had actually cut his ears (still can't figure out what that nut was thinking!) He was then abandoned, chained under a house and left for dead in the hot Lancaster sun for months as he deteriorated, his fur became terribly matted, he lost almost all his teeth. Nearby people threw him scraps once in a while, but nobody cared to save him. Then somehow Robert and Yana found about this and drove out there to try to do it themselves! But Coco wouldn't come to them. They tried treats, and everything, but he wouldn't come to anyone. He was a wild dog. Then Robert thought! He brought a female dog to entice Coco, and just like that, he came out to do his life-long duty, when they grabbed him. He has had a lot of health issues, as mentioned, and a bad ear infection to boot. A lot of these things were addressed by Rob and Yana. These Incredible people do God's work, I'm telling you! I was so amazed at how they devote their lives to saving precious fur-babies like they do! We decided this dog was for us! A challenge to be sure for me, but I've always been good at teaching dogs tricks, etc. Coco is a bit rough around the edges, of course, but I feel confidant as he makes strides learning and most importantly enjoying life, with ALL the love for him and him alone! To get puppy-chinos from Starbucks, go on long walks, given the best food, doggy parks, having his own people to lay on their laps. We've had Coco for three weeks now, and you wouldn't believe the changes in him! (and how fast he has become spoiled!) Our hearts feel SO good knowing the good life we will provide him with, no matter how long he has with us in this world and we feel so good for HIM! He comes when called, is learning how to 'sit' and 'sit up', and is very loving! He is very sensitive personality. I can't imagine him being this way and still surviving everything he was up against. Robert is the nicest guy! A great guy! They set me up with all kinds of stuff. Food, treats, some medicines, and everything we needed to know about him. Leash, collar, harness, and this is just the beginning!,They care so much about what they're doing you can't help but get sucked in! Yana is such a hard worker too. Just super loving, caring, knowledgable folks! They went out of their way to help us out every way they could, and no we have a happy, sweet baby that's all ours! I don't know who got the better end of the deal! Him, or us! Thank you SO much Robert and Yana! Wishing you guys the BEST of everything in life. You deserve it!

We adopted a dog…read morethrough spcaLA and were referred there for his neuter procedure, which was required as part of the adoption agreement. The issues began at drop-off. I arrived on time at 8:30 a.m., but there was a long line of owners and dogs waiting outside. Many of the dogs appeared to be puppies, fosters, or newly adopted pets still adjusting and difficult to manage. I waited approximately 20 minutes while trying to control my 65-pound dog. When I reached the front, staff said they had no record of our appointment and asked, in an unprofessional manner, whether I had completed the intake form that was supposedly emailed to me. I had never received it. I was then handed paperwork to complete on-site while continuing to manage my dog in a crowded environment. On the form, I disclosed that my dog had been experiencing chronic diarrhea since being picked up as a stray, that we were actively working with our veterinarian to identify the cause, and that our veterinarian had cleared him for surgery. Staff then told me they would not proceed if he had diarrhea. I explained that this condition predated the adoption, that the neuter was required by the shelter, and that we had already obtained veterinary clearance. Staff repeatedly went back and forth between me and the veterinarian before eventually presenting a high-risk consent form. The communication around this was especially concerning. When the form was presented, I was told that by signing it, I was accepting that if anything happened to my dog, it would be my fault. I understand that additional risks can exist, but this was handled in a dismissive and inappropriate manner. If the clinic had sent the intake paperwork in advance or reviewed the medical concerns beforehand, this could have been addressed prior to my driving an hour from West Adams to Van Nuys with a dog who does not travel well. I was also disappointed that additional charges were presented for items such as an e-collar, pain medication, and IV fluids. For a required adoption procedure, these added costs felt excessive. Pick-up was similarly poor. When my dog was returned, a staff member commented, "Make sure to take care of the diarrhea because he still has it," despite our earlier detailed discussion of the condition and treatment plan. While loading him into the car, I noticed feces on his cone, tail, and legs. This suggested he had soiled himself and had not been adequately cleaned before discharge, which was both upsetting and concerning from a sanitation and post-operative care standpoint. Overall, this experience reflected poor communication, lack of professionalism, and inadequate attention to patient care. I would not return to Pet Orphans of Southern California and would not recommend this clinic to others. I also plan to share this experience with spcaLA so they are aware of the concerns regarding this referral partnership.

Marcy said, "So I hear your home is fabulous......" I was impressed that GTTDR went to such lengths. Thanks to Heather also for rescuing Buffy from a kill shelter. Two years later, we love Buffy more than you can imagine. She is family. She is three now. Though she is my primary responsibility for care, etc. she loves her dad and her grandma who lives with us. She gets three walks a day at three different parks in the area. She has tons of doggy and people friends and she loves to run and chase birds, rabbits and chipmunks. She is the fastest runner at any of the parks. Her vet says she's athletic, referring to her muscle tone. In the beginning she couldn't walk on a leash without pulling. She barked at everyone and every dog even if it were two blocks away. Now, she walks off-leash, listens to commands, understands everything I say, and has helped other dogs come out of their shell. She wants to be friends with all dogs with the exception of one. She looks to me to see if I give the okay to say 'hello' and she wags her tail and goes to the other dog/s. She is the sweetest soul you will ever meet. Everyone loves Buffy. She is good when visitors come and loves attention they give. She has such confidence and isn't shy about gentle pawing to get more rubs. On our walk this morning, she turned back to look at me with such a loving look, my friend asked, "What was that look?" I said, "She loves me!" He said, "That's what it looked like!" I'm happy she's ours. She deserves a good home and all the love she gets. She is secure and happy. Don't buy. Rescue!

I was reading the notices and schedule posted on the outside window when Maurice held the front door open and invited me in. I got to speak with and be with a truly amazing, caring, " real", passionate and kindhearted lady, Judy Wolfe and I got her, I really got her purpose, her love, her drive and her genuine care. God Bless You Judy!! She shared with me how this center came about, their activities, their schedule, the set up and support and upcoming events. This Veteran Center provides avenues for counseling and support, legal and medical services, transportation, education, financial guidance, special services, media, employment and housing assistance and a " buddy" system. I mentioned that my wife is also an MSW and a social worker who did work at the VA assisting veterans. The Santa Clarita Veteran Services center is a non profit community service establishment located in a tiny shopping center( dry cleaner. print shop) on the south side of Lyons just past Orchard Village Rd heading towards Railroad Ave. Veterans Day is in about 9 weeks. It was an honor to serve my great country and an honor to serve and help any which way I can at the Santa Clarita Veteran Services Center!
