It's funny reading reviews critical of the temperatures in spin rooms, I see it occationally when I find a properly kept studio. I spin, a lot, in many gyms from Monterey to Anchorage. I was going to cyclescape until I was given a dose of minor heat stroke because they don't keep the room cool at all. Heated spin is extremely dangerous. Here's the thing about breaking a sweat in a cool cycling room, there's a knob just under the handle bars. It's the "resistance" knob. If you can't break a sweat in the first song in an air conditioned room, you need to turn that knob to the left. You get out what you put in, if you aren't sweating, you cruising the flat road. If you want a hot room, try cyclescape, but read a few articles about heated cardio first. Forma's bikes are clean, smooth and give you a mileage read. Love this place. read more

Nice gym with a cool outdoor section, an upstairs cardio area, and weights downstairs. Definitely a different type of crowd than your 24 hour fitness tank top bro's vibe. A bit of an older crowd or parents with their kids, plus a mix of the usual gym goers. Nice environment without any gym intimidation from members. Would be nice if they had another smith machine or more deadlift/squat racks. Cafe/smoothie bar inside as well which is a nice touch. Older crowd seems to hang out and socialize there which is nice! I purchased a $200.00 dollar pass back in 2015. I didn't engage in a membership due to the high maintenance the members exhibited and the constant staring at you like you're an alien and the frowns on the faces. After going over to ClubSport, I decided this year that I preferred a smaller gym without a bar and full course eating area. I decided to try this place again hoping things had changed a bit? I called and membership still had my file after 2015, so the membership gal put me on a 5 day pass to try again. I checked in on the 4th of March and the guy at the front stated, "You're on a pass...right?" I stated "Yes." He moved me alone. This also happened the 2nd time. The third time is the charm. I checked in, then went up to the treadmill and was 20 minutes into the workout. Of course, no one was on the treadmills until I got on and then "suddenly" they all filled up. Then the Director of Membership approached me with an IPad to sign a waiver. I was utterly embarrassed and I asked, "Why interrupt my workout when this is done at check-in? Why embarrass me in front of these members around me who doesn't want me here anyway? He stated, "It's for liability and to prevent stealing?' I told him I don't steal. I decided to take a picture of this women behind me and I went downstairs to show him. I stated, "This is your liability, not me." But of course, your privileged members can do what they want...right." This would be a huge no-no in other gyms. I'm a Director of Risk Management for a medical corporation, so he picked the wrong person to attack. Also, on my free day, I was harassed beyond comprehensive. I'm in the whirlpool with my bathing suit on and a women ask, "Why are you in the whirlpool with your bathing suit on? I didn't see you in the pool? Is there a rule to be naked in the whirlpool, I can where my bathing suit! I like to bring my linus blanket blue towel to wrap around me because it's fits my torso. A member asked, "Why the blue towel?" If I farted in here, someone would ask? "Oh my God...did you fart?" It's constant bullying here...they just won't leave certain people alone! I finally went home and I called ClubSport who is now owned by the Bay Club. I'm signing up even though it's $200.00 a month. I was NEVER questioned, harassed or bullied the 8 years I was a member! This review is primarily for the Pilates program at Forma, though I love using their gym and spa amenities as well. Pilates Reformer classes have been a God send to me. You do have to pay extra for these special classes, but they have been so worthwhile as they got me back into the rhythm of exercising again (and returning to the gym). After years of intense lower back and shoulder pain from the computer, working out on the Reformer has been life changing. I used to have constant back spasms that would immobilize me, but after strengthening my core through their classes, I feel such a dramatic improvement. It's great not to live in pain! Thanks to the Pilates program director, Yuki Yoshi, and their many awesome teachers (Autumn, Pam, Karen). I'd also note that the gym is kept very clean, with towels and cleaning solution sprays near all the machines. They especially did a great job during the pandemic to make members feel safe. A year in and I've recently put in my request to cancel my membership at forma. They charge another month's fees after putting in your cancelation request, keep that in mind. They did better by updating on the app when they sub/cancel classes. Overly priced for their gym with broken and worn down machines. They can literally exchange pieces to fix their run down machines but choose not to do that or add more of the popular machines like lat pull downs, leg extensions etc. What separated them was the outside exercising area but they took most of the equipment inside and crowded the gym inside instead. Their schedule for classes don't run very late for those of us who don't work from home and commute. They have more staff then members at this point, makes sense why they can't lower their monthly costs to loyal members. It was nice while it lasted through covid, time to get back to an affordable gym with more machines to offer in addition to flexible class schedules. read more

I've been at Forma for about a month and I'd say it's an overall solid gym. I stick to the weight area mostly and enjoy some of the unique powerlifting equipment the gym offers(shout out to whomever decided to buy a WS reverse hyper). If I had any criticism, I wish(and highly recommend) there was some Hammer Strength//plate loaded machines and variations of barbells(you should really look into a Rhino Bar, that would be awesome!). If you are looking for a clean and a wide range of different fitness offerings, i'd recommend Forma. read more

I've been meaning to write a review for this gym ever since I joined last September. I haven't had a chance to read other reviews so some of what I say might be repetitive. If you're thinking of joining or looking to join, there are a number of important facets that earn this gym five stars or more. If you're on the friendly side, it's easy to make friends with other members in the functional training area. There's a nice family-like feeling there between the members and the trainers. They are the following: 1) exceptional customer service. They keep the gym very clean and if there's any issue that you might have and bring it to the attention of management, they take care of it immediately. 2) their equipment rarely has a sign on it that says, "out of order." 3) they have a great smart phone app that allows you to check classes and reserve for certain classes like spin or yoga. 4) they have a wide variety of classes and some great teachers. 5) this is a big one for me - they have a saltwater pool. 6) if you're into calisthenics, plyometrics or functional training, there is no other gym in the entire Contra Costa area that compares to this one. 7) lastly, their trainers are well educated and super friendly. read more

Excellent gym and staff. I didn't go to a gym for almost 2 years because of c19, so when the mask mandate was lifted for gyms I jumped at joining and getting back to normalcy. This is truly a 5 star gym - the best I've been to in California. Here's why: There's AMPLE parking here week nights after work, WHAT?! You mean you can actually find parking without circling the lot three times and stalking someone seen on their way to their car? Yes, honey, you heard right. The gym is super clean - there's always someone dusting or mopping or wiping down something when I'm here. I love a nice and clean gym! All members receive towel service and free lemon and orange infused water to keep you hydrated and dry during your work out. You don't pay extra. Even though the prices for a membership here are a little on the expensive side - you get what you pay for. They have pretty much anything and everything you would look for in a gym + more. They have cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, punching bags, a heated salt water pool open year round, and over 100 classes taught at no extra fee. They have an outdoor gym area too - which is near the pool and is probably awesome during the summer. They actually teach classes outside as well during the warmer months. They also have one of most convenient bathrooms for people on the go who don't want to pack their bathroom in their gym bag. They have mouth wash, hair spray, lotion, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and body wash all at your finger tips. They also have hair dryers and vanities! Also the lockers in the bathroom are digital and free to use. When you sign up, they give you the following: 1 free personal training session, 1 free Pilates reformer and intro class (Pilates is one of the few classes that aren't free), a skin consultation at their spa - also give your 35% off your first spa service and one free stress management consultation. Fitting given that it was painted by a personal trainer from staff. I have found that Forma provides everything needed for one to develop and continue focus on healthy living. Clean attended to locker rooms, complete with digital easy to use lockers, showers complete with liquid shampoo, conditioner, and soap. And it gets even better! For both gentleman's and ladies shower rooms there is a spa, sauna, and steam room! Did I mention free towel service?! The gym equipment is extensive, and plenty to go around. Their cardio machines are on the top floor of the gym and make it easy to run with the pack in an atmosphere perfect for breathing right, pacing yourself, then unleashing your internal lightning. Their machine and free weights are all down stairs and to get ready to pump weights, the atmosphere is focused, and hungry for gains. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Reed Snook has worked with me and helped me realize how completely unique this gym experience is. Personal trainers are qualified, practice what they preach and give clear and effective advice for targeted progression. Real sweet gym. Sparknotes version: Great facility for functional and strength training, never overcrowded, consistently awesome customer service. Charles Dickens version: Has pretty much whatever you could want: beyond the standard Olympic stations and machines, they boast an indoor and outdoor calisthenics rig, multiple sets of rings, a heavy bag and a speed bag, balance boards, bosu balls, a ton of kettle bells, battle ropes, a tire with handles, sticks, maces, a pool, a climbing rope, you name it Forma's probably got it (and I haven't even mentioned the in-house chiropractor and massage therapists or 100+ weekly group classes if that setting is more comfortable or enjoyable for you). Parking is always easy and I rarely have to wait for a machine. Even at busy hours I can always find a relevant piece of equipment to keep my workouts high-intensity when I want to. The lockerrooms are typically clean -- their maintenance/janitorial staff is always there and always doing something -- and they're equipped with electric lockers, steam room and sauna, spa, showers, and most typical grooming fixins like shaving materials, q-tips, etc. My family loves to vacation at the St. Regis in Laguna/Dana area every year or two and this gym is like having access to the expanded version of their gym/spa experience every day. Genuinely look forward to working out here. And to round it all out, Jessica is way sweet and never applied any more pressure than was appropriate; I say this as someone who also sells and client-faces professionally. And to boot, not long after I signed up they had a Black Friday sign-up deal (I'm talking 7 or 8 days later) and when I emailed to inquire whether I could retroactively qualify for the deal, Josh thanked me for signing up and charged my reg. fee back against my next month's dues (basically gave me half the deal). I finally found the gym I have been looking for. This gym has everything I need and exactly what I want. It not only has a parking lot (which, coming from Oakland, parking was my main issue), it also has free valet, even their tip is included! The gym itself is glamorous, the outdoor workout area even wowed my husband who designs buildings. The childcare is its main selling point for me. I had a minor issue about the Kidsville being too busy to accommodate me a couple times but learned from Fabricio that I can reserve spots ahead of time for my kids and not be turned away (which I didn't know). Their prices are high, but honestly, I don't mind paying it. I think I'm paying 99 a month and my 2 kids (unlimited access in Kidville) is maybe 45-50 a month. You get a clean gym, trained staff, variety of classes, relaxing spa, free valet and coffee in the morning, and so much more. It's worth it to me to pay this much and not have to worry about dreaded parking in Oakland, paying for said dreaded parking, and walking all the way back from gym to dreaded parking. If the owner reads this at all, he must know that his staff is really incredible. I've been a member for 6 months, going 5-6 days a week. I mainly do group classes and cardio machines (although in the past I've trained on weight machines so I can somewhat speak to their equipment). Classes and instructors are going thru major changes as of March 2014. Some of this is motivated by the gym, some by instructors. I joined wanting a 5:45a class everyday and some subs (and even certain instructors) aren't knowledgable enough about proper form, so that their teaching style has me constantly modifying (and I don't like to be the person in the corner doing something different than the rest of the class). When I joined I liked the form and intensity of the classes everyday, now it's down to 2 days a week. Disappointing. But they are really pushing to get more (and already have) some very top- notch instructors. Hopefully these changes will rectify for me. There is definitely a large portion of older clientele, and classes reflect this in being slower. I like a class with great form, but power too. I like to work out hard. The facilities are clean and well kept. There is an outdoor area for TRX and small group boot camp classes in nice weather. They pool is salt water. There is a new mind-body studio, although I haven't taken a yoga class in it yet. They are also in the process of getting new yoga instructors which is great. Their classes now are geared towards an older crowd, who want stretching more than intensity. Not many classes on the schedule at this time either. They have childcare. You pay $25 month for 2 hours per day (for 1 child). They told me this may increase soon. I took my 6 month old there and she didn't protest, which was great. Cardio equipment is in bad shape. I'm a member of another club in the city that has machines 2 versions newer than what this gym has. There is only one newer(ish) elliptical machine that I often have the bad timing of not being able to use because someone else is on it. Wish they would update this area too. Weights are pretty nice. An assortment of machines. Kettle bells. A huge tire you can flip over or jump on outside. Ropes and TRX stations to make up fun workouts if that's your thing. Because of my desire for an early group class, I may join another gym if their new instructors aren't my style. But I liked my time here. And would recommend this place. Started coming to Forma because of issues in neck and shoulders. Being close to 60 years old I was worried about hurting myself. I was told I needed to strengthen and build my core. My friend encouraged me to get private Pilates sessions from Yuki the head of the Pilates program among other things. After a few privates I started doing the classes and after several weeks I was able to see and feel the difference . Its been several years now and I still go to Pilates classes and always have a great instructor. So many great classes to choose from always have the most amazing Trainers and staff. Newly renovated with showers and lockers & outdoor saltwater pool. I have referred friends and clients who have joined. Forma sells itself. I have been a member of different gyms and yoga studios over my lifetime and joined Forma in October. I'd have to say Forma is top-notch and I am thoroughly enjoying my workouts. It is contemporary, clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. I prefer to take classes as my form of exercise. They have lots of classes and lots of variety. The instructors in the Group Ex classes that I've taken have been experienced and motivating. My favorites are BodyPump and Step classes. What really is impressing me, however, is the Mind Body Studio. It is a very pleasant place to practice yoga and Yuki, the director, is doing a great job bringing in some of the best yoga instructors in the area. It is so nice having a dedicated yoga studio in the same location as my gym. I love that he has brought in Kelli and Loan and feel they will help guide Forma yogis to the next level of yoga. My hope is that when this occurs, more of the classes will extend to 75 minutes. I have also recently tried the Pilates and Roll/Release classes with Yuki and Karen and have found those to be quite beneficial as well. Hopefully people that go to Forma are aware of the new chiropractic office there -- Trusalus. Before joining Forma, I was familiar with the 28 Days to Health Cleanse they offer. I followed the 28-day cleanse in 2011 and 2012 and continue making one of their protein shakes in the morning to start off my day. It has totally worked for me and I have kept my weight at a desired level and feel a lot better, too. In fact, I discovered through my medical records that my blood test results show my cholesterol, LDL and glucose levels have dropped significantly during this time. I was happy to report that to Dr. Hartstein, one of the chiropractors there. He has worked on both my neck and back and it has given me much needed relief each time. At first glance, The Forma Gym is really nice inside, and so are the people. The usual set of professional training gym equipment, classes, pool, and workout spaces. I signed up with one of their trainers, Ingrid, and I was skeptical as to how difficult the workout would be, since the instructor was almost overly happy to be there. Ingrid put me though her individualized workout, including, TRX, Kettle bells, a circuit style class, that was one of the hardest and most "functional" workouts I have ever gone through. I started training with Ingrid twice a week, each time she directed me through numerous warm ups and even described them as my "work out series". Then we really started moving through several rounds of core exercises, but it's a little bit of a blur, since Ingrid keeps you motivated but drives you to achieve more. The steam room, Sauna, whirlpool served as motivators to keep going. Soon my wife joined me and were were paired up to go through each round, which i actually enjoyed having quality time with her and helped a lot when it began to get hard. And Ingrid personalizes each exercise even though my wife was much more fit. Soon my grown up children joined my workout session - quality time exercising together as a family. And Ingrid turned it up a level. holy s*#% it got hard. There is a bur-pee routines, a trx routine, balance exercises, ab routines and kettle-bell squats and swings. Every round Ingrid shows you how to make it harder but is very informative and hands on with modifications. She keeps saying she wants the "right" places to hurt. And I do hurt after one of her workouts. But in a good way. Up and down, planks, jumping jacks, lunges, sit ups, lifts and presses. Ingrid keeps it challenging but fun, After our training session, I am feeling it everywhere, but I seem to recover quickly and am ready for another session. Since I have started with Ingrid, I have lost over 120 lbs and reduced my body fat from 40+% to under 25%. I feel much better and have quality time with my family as we work out together. read more

I have been a member of Forma for 12 years (since it was WC Sports and Fitness). Overall I like the gym, but the classes seem to be transitioning into softer, more "spiritual" experiences (not what I go to the gym for!). There used to be several Body Pump classes a week, then they got rid of them because they had to pay a Les Mills franchise fee. They replaced that with a similar class which used heavy weights and bars, but they recently got rid of that also. Currently, of the 93 classes per week offered in the mornings, only 4 are potentially weight classes. I say "potentially" because the instructors don't always use heavy weights. If you want to develop some muscle and strength at Forma you have to either pay for a trainer or do it on your own, because the classes are not offering that. I think members should be given a choice between a hard workout and the "softer" classes, like yoga, Tai Chi, and "Elastic Body". read more

Updating this review because I have been actively going to Forma - sorry for all the checkins, Yelp Friends! But this place is becoming my second home. Adding on to the previous review, this review is mainly for the instructors and personal trainer! U-Jams with Laura is by far my favorite class ever! I get sad if I have to miss a class due to work or commuting schedule but have been every class I can attend. It's a fun hip-hop class with top 40-ish songs. Very fun for all ages. Shout out to all the ladies that let me request the Get Low by Dillon Francis song! Laura is definitely super encouraging and boosts your confidence. Her class is so much fun and of course, is my favorite instructor. Pilates with Lencola is amazing! I feel so great after even doing a great ab workout - that's something you don't read everyday. She is very helpful in class, and takes her time to show you the right technique. I definitely recommend any pilates class with her. Lastly, I signed up for a personal training session with Darlene and by far it was the best decision made. For someone that is looking to target certain areas and make a change in workouts, getting a personal trainer is the best bet. Darlene was super sweet and very informative when it came to learning new work outs. She challenged me with different workouts but didn't push me out of my comfort zone. I am definitely feeling the back and abs sore but so happy I did a session with her. (Even signed up for more afterwards) Highly recommend her! In conclusion - I love it here. Also, download their app for friendly competitions and goal settings. I have been using it everyday and noticed they even have a reward system. WIN Swole Tip - Parking gets crazy around 5-6pm so no princess parking spots. read more

Forma Gym is a great place for your workout and hanging out. Superb (I'll repeat, SUPER) instructors, trainers and staff. There are so many classes to choose from; I gravitate to Barre, Yoga and Reformer (extra charge). The Spa room is very inviting; I had a wonderful therapeutic massage recently. The parties are fun; as well as the occasional art exhibits and athletic clothing sales. I was a member back in the 80's and 90's under different owner/management. They are just having a blast there while mommy spends some time in the spa, sauna, pool & jacuzzi. I've always hated going to gyms, actually, I've never been a fan of working out at all. I lose motivation quick and have a hard time pushing myself. Until I tried Forma. Now that I'm a stay at home mom, (and could use a small break from time to time) my husband suggested I try the 3 day trail. I LOVED it!!! My 1yr old needs to get used to being without me and I love having some time for myself to do something positive. This gym is a lovely place! It's never crowded, has a great group of people that work out there (NOT a meat market by any means - thank gawd), the staff is super friendly and helpful, and I absolutely love the layout, look, and feel of the whole place. Beautiful workout areas, including a heated, saltwater pool, authentic yoga room, pilates (with reformers) room, all the best equipment and classes, and a nice locker room, complete with hot tub, steam room, and sauna. I don't think I could workout at another gym after being a member here for three years. My husband and I just joined and I am so happy we did. I recently had a baby and need to get my body back. I'm thankful for Kidsville (daycare) it's just what we needed and our son loves it. Since we have a nanny, it's nice that our 7 month old can play with other kids and get additional stimulation. The gym is remodeled, clean and upscale without being pretentious. My husband had a membership to a big corporate gym and never worked out because it's not his vibe. Forma fits the bill and provides us with a real place to get fit. The classes are amazing--great variety and the members are genuine and down to earth. We're also both small business owners and make it our mission to support other locally owned businesses because the profits stay in and circulate around the local economy. Never had defined "abs" before joining Forma. And without doing 1 sit up!! After taking Reformer Pilates classes just 3 times; I noticed a difference in my abdominal strength and shape. I am an ex-swimmer, step aerobics, jogger and weight lifter. None of them gave me the definition of the Pilates Mat and Pilates Reformer classes. I finally know what "core strength" feels and looks like. Forma is not your traditional "gym" but more of an experience. Forma has recently purchased Walnut Creek Sports and Fitness and moved over to the Olympic Blvd. location. They have really been updating an old place and are really making it modern. I joined Forma in July of this year. I have been extremely happy with the facility and the staff. It did not take long before some of the staff knew me by name. Whether they know my name or not, I am always greeted when I enter. One of the main reason I joined this gym was the fact that just about all of the class are included in the membership fee. I recently retired from my career as an accountant. After a few decades of desk work, I developed poor posture with a shoulder forward, head forward posture. I went looking for a gym not only to maintain fitness but mostly to get help with corrective exercises to improve my posture . Forma has a very well maintained indoor facility with an outdoor pool ( which my wife loves ) and outdoor exercise area. Forma has a lot of classes to keep exercise interesting. But most important, Forma also has a strong cadre of personal trainers and class leaders as well. In particular I want to give a shout out to Ernie Hernandez as a great personal trainer who has helped me. He has impressive educational credentials (a Masters in Exercise Science as well as a bunch of other professional certifications). In addition to putting me through a series of corrective exercises and yoga positions, I have learned a lot about how my bones and muscles work together. I started going to Forma a few years back specifically because my Pilates instructor, Leslie Jerge, began instructing there. Forma is fortunate to have her! I have been doing Pilates Reformer for a decade I've tried every place in the area, and there is no one better! I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked other aspects of the gym as well, it has a very friendly small club feel but still has all the necessary bells and whistles. If you like Barre class, try the class with Heather, she will kick your booty!! She is fabulous as well. read more
