Nature runs free here. She does what she wants and the land is preserved. It's really a great place to explore vs beach lounging. But, you can lounge if that's your passion. Sometimes the area can be less crowded certain times of the day. The sunsets and sunrises are stunning. You can even catch a glimpse of the Point Judith Lighthouse in the distance. Parking: Tight, tricky and can be crowded. Overall a great place to explore.

The dirt road into the area gets graded a couple times a year but it does get very very pitted with deep pot holes. Beware if your vehicle is low. Might not be an easy ride. It's free to enter and it gets very busy in the summer. Portable restrooms are around May until September. While you're here, don't miss the touching granite monument to the lost fisherman over near the raised outlook stop. Bring a picnic lunch, your camera, a chair...swimming is nice in the summer.

Brassil Park is a cute neighborhood playground but certainly not a destination playground like Lippitts Memorial Park or Dexter Field. It needs some landscape pretty badly and the ginkgo trees in the fall smell to high heaven. The stink from these trees' fruit stayed in my nostrils for quite a while after leaving.

But, we visited yesterday (July 19th) and the horseflies were so bad that we had to leave. They were swarming on everyone, even with DEET bug repellent, we were still getting bitten. It was horrible. We have never seen it like this, and have been to this beach many times, at different times of the year. Everyone was leaving. I saw a man with so many bites that blood was running down his legs. Just want everyone to be informed in case you decide to visit. :(

We find this a very enjoyable place for a quiet walk. Although not all man made sounds are masked,…read morethe sounds of crickets and birds and the wind in the tree tops gently serenaded us on our most recent walk through the wood. Easy to find, the gravel car park is a very good size. There is a covered information kiosk off the car park and another three-sided sign board at the trail head, along with a small covered Trail Map box on a post. Signs everywhere tell you this is *not* a dog friendly location. The early part of this trail is one person wide, fairly even ground. It wends it's way along the edge of two meadows. After the second meadow, the path becomes much broader and remains fairly clear of roots and rocks until you reach the old stone fireplace at Carr Pond where the pathway turns into the wood and becomes more difficult to navigate. If you have a sturdy, off-road baby pram or wheelchair, you may be able to travers this early part of the trail with a little assistance. You will need to navigate around the 'no dog' sign in the middle of the path at the trail head and the narrow meadow portion. After that the trail widens and would be easier to traverse in dry conditions. We branched off on to the CP trail into the wood. The trail takes a short, steep climb at the beginning and then levels out. Single wide, the trail is clearly blazed, even under a carpet of autumn foliage. CP trail is the white trail mark and signs for other trails are very well signed. Carr Pond is about half way round on the CP trail, before looping back and returning to the meadow. We 'strolled' the trail, enjoying being in the wood, stopped at the pond a couple of times to enjoy the serenity. You can most definitely walk it faster, but we took about an hour to make the loop. There are no benches to rest on along this trail, or to sit and enjoy the pond views. In the wooded section you need to keep an eye on roots and rocks. There are a couple of short boardwalks over low area near the pond. It was cooler under the trees making me glad I remembered a hat and jacket along with my water. No facilities of any kind are available, so go, before you visit. Definitely an easy trail for those who are sturdy on their feet. Wear appropriate footwear, and enjoy the quiet peace of the wood and pond.

I love the pond that it surrounds and we always see signs of beaver activity by it. There's an old fireplace on the hike that is my kids go to spot to stop for a snack. The only downside to this hike is in the winter if it snows and you'd like to snow shoe. It's NOT well marked when there is snow on the ground. The trail markers for one trail are white which make it very difficult to follow after a fresh snow fall. A friend of mine and I did it years ago and ended up having to turn around. If there is snow on the tree trunks it made it impossible to follow the white trail markers. The yellow trail is the longer loop and we never made it that far to find those markers. That's my only complaint!

You use to be able to purchase an annual pass but then they did away with it and it was only available for Portsmouth residents. Which I feel any RI resident should be available to purchase a pass. They had coupon books available to purchase for $50 for 4 passes and now they have done away with that also. I went to the beach yesterday to find out that it now cost $25 per day for parking. That is ridiculous a lot for parking when there are no amenities available besides a bathroom and they allow people to fish and leave their garbage and fishing line and hooks everywhere. I'm so disappointed!

We had the pleasure over the summer to watch as the osprey babies were born . The whole experience was so cool. There are trails , butterfly gardens . The different species of fish and shellfish in the bay. That are in different tanks the kids can learn from. They also have a summer camp and host birthday parties.

A swamp that's great…read more for a lot of things Great Swamp Management Area isn't really all swamp. A part of it certainly is but much of the 3,400 acres is woodland, fields, rocks and water. Lots of different terrains with lots of different plants and animals. I usually avoid hiking in places with the words swamp, tick, death or leech in them but Great Swamp is indeed great. Although it isn't all swamp the emphasis is definitely on water. The Chickasheen, Usqupaug, Chipuxet, and Pawcatcuk rivers all run through here and the 2 miles of the northern edge of pristine Worden Pond is included within it's boundaries. This of course makes it pretty buggy during the warm months but it also makes the area a great place for some quiet water canoeing, yaking, fishing or perhaps wind surfing on the pond. Besides the water sports Great Swamp is also a cool place for mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and especially cross country skiing. Not a lot of extreme terrain, mostly gently sloping ups and downs and lots of great views of streams, brooks and ponds. Plenty of trees and rocks to crash into if you're bike riding and of course tons of mud in the wet season. In the spring huge groups of birds gather around the water and if you're lucky you might see deer, otters, turtles and even some water snakes. The area is also famous or perhaps infamous for it's history. In 1675 Josiah Winslow and his Pequot and Mohegan allies pretty much wiped out the Narragansett Tribe in a devastating battle that cost both sides much pain and blood. The ironic part was that Winslow attacked the Narragansett Tribe so they wouldn't form an alliance with King Phillip during the Pequot Wars. Of course after being attacked by the English the surviving Narragansetts were so mad they did just that. Great strategy. Great Swamp is great all year long but I enjoy it most during the quietude of the snow months. Peaceful, serene and ethereal. You have to wear fluorescent orange during hunting season to keep from getting your head blow off but most of the hunters here seem very courteous, reasonable and willing to share with others. Great Swamp is indeed a great swamp but with the emphasis on the great. A swamp that's great for a lot of things
