As a Hispanic customer, I can guarantee once my name was revealed, suddenly I didn't know my own weight?? Being asked to reconfirm as if I was expected to be pearl the whale. The last time we went for a horseback riding was when we were kids. That's why I was thrilled when my SO suggested to do this activity. We called a few hours on our last day to book our ride. Luckily, they were able to squeeze us in. It was supposed to rain during our ride and we came in earlier that our booked time. Due to that reason, they were able to accommodate us a few minutes earlier. It wasn't supposed to be a private ride, but it was just us during that booked time, so we got to enjoyed it more. Our ride was about 1 hour. We were guided by Sarah and Cory. They were both friendly and were able to answer our questions. I was a bit scared at first because I never rode a horse by myself (when I was a kid, someone was holding a rope to guide the horse). But Sarah was very helpful and gave us suggestions on how to ride the horse. Our horses were very nice and are funny. Overall, the ride was very enjoyable. I highly recommend Fort Valley Ranch, if you are in the area and wanted to do ride a horse. Everyone is very professional, accommodating, and friendly. First time on a horse in 30 years (30 long years of pointlessly regretting not having a horse around when experiences like this are there for the taking). Everything felt easy from the parking lot to the last stretch of the ride. My boyfriend and I are ,neither of us, in our fittest shape and he'd never been on a horse, but was game. The staff didn't flinch but advised him well and he was so grateful not to feel mollycoddled. This goes for me as well, the horses were saddled when we arrived (and appropriate to our candidly pre-recorded skill levels). We were provided some clear guidance on steering and sitting and able to take off on the trail right away with a charming and chill guide through the George Washington Forest. I admit I felt somewhat awkward but the horse was a professional and I learned pretty fast that he knew the way as our guide attentively corrected our leans where needed on inclines, shared with me her takes on each horse's own personality or habits. It was a good trail for beginner riders, if -in beginning- you don't want to be guaranteed ease. (Why embark on anything almost completed?) Some parts of the trail were tricky. The horses needed a tiny nudge of the heel for the inclines, but then quickly caught up with each other. And it reminded me of a lot I think we- I at least -often miss: that almost everything worth doing is always a negotiation of communication, trust and connection. The sky was clear, the woods were coming alive, the horses seemed healthy and well cared for, and the staff seemed grounded and attentive to both horses and riders. We had a completely perfect experience doing a 1.5hr trail ride here. Most importantly - the entire staff was amazingly kind, helpful, patient, and friendly. Our group had kids, adults, and a senior - they put time and thought into the right horse for each of us and offering the right amount of guidance to make sure we enjoyed our time. This was not some tourist trap walk-in-circles ride. We rode on trails through their 84 acres, up and down hills and switchbacks, over a creek, and through the woods. Had to do some leaning forward and back to balance and made it feel adventurous to us non-experienced riders! We saw lots of whitetail deer and heard from the guides you may see black bear in the right season. The horses were so sweet and well-trained, we felt safe. The whole ranch had a great feeling of being comfortable, clean, and remote. A fire going for our 10am ride was so nice! Cute limited gift shop items were great so the kids could take home a key chain of their horse :) Our kids say "this was a great experience for all ages - young and older people" and "this was probably the best experience of my life" Graham, 7, would like to work here when he's old enough. Can't think of anything to suggest that they could possible improve upon. read more

The trip leaders were awesome however the manager was extremely uptight and rude to our group members. This was our second year on a trail ride here and I had hoped that the manager would be easier to work with. Unfortunately the tone set by the manager put everyone on edge and took away from what could have been a positive long lasting relationship. Ft Valley Ranch was a hit! My friends and I went to go horse back riding and were surprised to see that there was also a campground that you could camp at. The horse back riding route was great, but what made this place stand out above other rides we'd been on was the friendliness of the staff. We were taken aback at first because we had a friend who had to cancel due to medical reasons, & they still made us pay for that horse. But when we got there, we learned the friendliness of the workers and forgot all about paying for the additional horse. My daughter really wanted to go horseback riding for her 18th birthday, so my husband found this place online and it was only 2 hours away. We had a really great time on the horses. The horse wranglers were all so friendly. Peter and Leland were great with the horses and talked about themselves and the ranch. It was clear they knew what they were doing. We enjoyed riding Junior, Tigger, Shadow, and Twister. We did a 1 hour ride with the whole family, then the next day my daughter and I did the lunch ride and it was so much fun! I got a little nervous on up hills and on the rocky parts when some of the horses tripped, but it was fine. I thought it was hilarious when my horse Tigger kept biting Junior's butt when he stopped. We stayed 3 nights in the Moose cabin. The beds weren't super comfortable, but we still had a great time. My 9 year old son loved the pond right outside our cabin. He had a blast catching fish, crawfish, and newts. Every night we had smores and a short walk over to feed the horses. There were some road closures due to the fire, so trips into the city took much longer, but it wasn't too bad. We are already thinking about when we can go back. read more

It's a nice quiet out of the way ranch. Did the two night stay and half day train ride. Accommodations are sparse but clean and quiet. The ranch grounds are maintained well. We stayed in ELK Cabin for two nights. There were 4 adults and 4 children (ages 3-8). The two older girls went with two adults on a trail ride that included going up and down through the woods, seeing deer up close and having an excellent trail guide who engaged the girls and helped as needed with their horses while giving them some freedom to learn. This was their 2nd time ever riding. In the afternoon they led the 3 year olds on horses around the campsite. So nice. Location is great for visiting Luray Caverns and the little zoo nearby. The accomodations were ok for a rustic location. We brought our own sheets and pillows, used the kitchen for most meals and the muffins they provided were a treat. Hot water in shower was limited but fine in kitchen. We made campfires both nights. (They sell wood and ice). read more

What a gem! We stayed here for a couple nights in the Elk Cabin after spending a week in DC. It was a welcome, quiet, beautiful reprieve from city life. The grounds are beautiful with the horses and a couple ponds in the back. The cabin had just enough amenities, and it was nice to have the muffins waiting for us. My kids liked having the board games. Arranging reservations over the phone was easy. We also did a 1 hour ride. A couple of my kids were a little nervous, so they went on horses guided by the lovely and sweet Corey and Sarah. They were so incredibly patient and reassuring with my hesitant child. The trail ride was lovely and comfortable. My daughter and I wish we could have rode another hour. I highly recommend Fort Valley Ranch. The Shenandoah Valley is gorgeous. read more

Absolutely recommend this cute little campground in the Shenandoah Valley offering pull-through RV sites with water and electric, plus primitive tent camping spots, and cabins with full kitchens and bathrooms!! For the campers, there are clean bathrooms available, plus 2 individual showers with sinks and electric. We came in mid-March and practically had the campground to ourselves, which was nice and quiet. The owners are lovely people, with the entire family working the ranch and trail rides. We stayed 5 nights and did a 1.5 hr trail ride. Sarah and Corey were fantastic trail guides offering humor and much information about the ranch's 84 acres and history of the area. They took great care to match each rider with a horse matching their size and riding experience level. At the end of the ride, everyone got to give their horse a special treat, take pictures with the guides, and then peruse the ranch store in search of a cute trinket to take home. Especially neat was the fact that you can purchase a keychain or necklace with your horse's picture on it! Other wonderful amenities of the campground include the ponds, the hiking trails, the steady campfire throughout the day, the ability to purchase firewood or other small sundries, strong wi-fi for the glampers, and the ability to hang out near the horses all day, every day, if you so choose. The parking area for the trail to Kennedy's Peak is a short drive up the road if you're up for an amazing view and a solid hike! read more

Beautiful Campground! Our friends and their family and my family had stayed here from Wed-Sun, and it was one of the most peaceful campgrounds we have stayed at. When we first booked we were told about their buddy sites where you can face your Campers facing each other and it was so nice being able to do so. The sites were also very spacious which we also really enjoyed, since we had 3 kids staying with us. They had plenty of room to run around and play. Our friend's family stayed in the Elk cabin and it felt cozy. Very clean inside and spacious! Also, another great perk about this campground is they offer horse trail rides and horse rides for the little kids around the campground. Our friends and us loved the hour trail ride through the forest. It was beautiful and we seen a few deer up close. I would like to thank our trail guide Derek for such a good experience. He was very nice! My son loved the horse ride on cricket around the campground and even though he was tired and almost fell asleep, he loved the ride so much. All he wanted to do was ride the horses. I want to thank Brady (I believe that was his name) for guiding him around on cricket! Last but not least I want to thank everyone at this campground for making it a really good experience for my family and my friends and their family. I like to ride, but don't get to nearly often enough, so when Martin suggested we do a trail ride while in Luray, I jumped on the internet to find a good outfit. There were several near Luray, but I had a fear of riding across flat empty plains while the sun beat mercilessly upon me and my depressed horse. Hence I picked Fort Valley Stables, which was apparently located in the foothills of the mountains, near the George Washington National Forest. The drive to Fort Valley was beautiful, and twisty-turney. The Ranch itself looked well tended, and we parked next to a large paddock with a good-sized herd of horses and mules. Next to the nearby office was a string of saddled horses -- clearly, two of these would be for us. After filling out the most extensive legal disclaimer of liability I have ever seen, we settled down to wait for our scheduled time. It looked as if we would be the only customers -- the waiting was to find out if any surprise guests would show up. Thankfully, it was still just us at the appointed time. Shane was our trail guide, I followed on a Percheron mix, Martin came next on his sorrel, and Jamie brought up the rear to keep an eye out for accidents and idiotic behavior. The ride itself was interesting - much better than that flat field I had pictured. The trail we took criss-crossed over and around a nearby mountain. Lots of rock climbing, going up and down ravines, stepping over logs. No opportunity to do any trotting though. The horses were well-trained, and mostly well-behaved. We had been warned that since it was early spring, they would be trying to eat whatever greenery they could get their lips around, but that we were to prevent them from doing this. Random stopping and eating could evidently be a hazard for very small riders (I could see them toppling down a horse neck if they were holding the reins too short). My horse was a master at getting green leaves. He would spot the bush/branch well before he reached it, plot his trajectory, and innocently amble over next to it, only at the last minute reaching out to grab whatever he could. I did my best, but was occasionally distracted - he got three leaves during our hour and a half ride. Shane, our guide, started out all stony-faced and reserved. But I kept peppering him with questions and eventually he got real chatty. I just loved hearing his cowboy accent. By the time the ride ended, we were all getting along well. My legs held up pretty well, considering it had been so long since I last rode. But when I dismounted, my knees folded like cake batter. I recovered after only 30-60 seconds of embarrassingly chicken-like squat-walking. I give Fort Valley two thumbs up for organization, friendliness, well-tended horses and gear, and great scenery. One small misshapen thumb down for not giving us any opportunity to meet our horses and pet them, either before or after the ride. read more

The staff was friendly and helpful, and left a welcome gift. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and equipped for light meals and morning coffee. WiFi met the needs. Our guest owns horses, so the daily trail ride activity around the ranch was definitely a bonus experience (not to mention the beauty of Fort Valley). Our guides were very friendly and my horse, Smokey, was great. The guided tour goes up the mountain through the woods creating a great atmosphere and a nice ride.
