Fort Wayne is a city with three rivers flowing through it: the St. Marys, the St. Joseph, and the Maumee. So of course, when my family and I had the chance to explore the city via its waterways, we jumped at the chance. We had our first-ever canoeing experience as a family, and I have to admit that I was a little (OK, a lot) nervous. But Fort Wayne Outfitters was super professional and made sure that we were all safe, and I felt a lot better once we hit the water. They gave us some instructions on how to paddle and how to change direction. Canoeing and kayaking are two of those activities that you just have to jump in and do it yourself, and you eventually get the hang of it. After about 10 minutes of paddling up the river, I felt a lot more confident! I wasn't going to win any awards, but I was able to paddle fast and turn the canoe in whatever direction I wanted it to go. We had two young children with us, and the children sat at the front of the two-person canoe, because they weigh less than the adults. Everyone is given life jackets, and they provide multiple sizes for adults and children. We booked two hours, but my youngest child pooped out after about a half hour. Canoeing is a good workout, and it'll get you tired! But I feel like an older kid could definitely go two hours. The best part about our experience was that we got to see downtown Fort Wayne from a whole different perspective. Fort Wayne Outfitters and the boat launch is located at Promenade Park, so we got to see all of the great features of the park, and then also the nature and beauty of this part of Indiana (as well as beaver dams!). read more

Purchased two recumbent bicycles from here after confirming they had them in stock (being a specialty item, most places typically only have one available or in some cases, none with the idea that an order would be placed). Thinking I'd walk in and walk out like one would typically do at a big box retailer, I was amazed to learn that this product is custom fitted for the rider (ie chain length, seat positioning, and accessory positioning). The staff are all highly knowledgeable with this product and provided the "white glove" treatment from start to finish. I was amazed at how much time was spent with each rider to ensure the best "fit" as well as the staff interaction - each making sure to introduce themselves throughout various steps of the customization process. Adjustments are made in house and accessories purchased were also attached. We loved our experience here. We took the kayak trip from Johnny Appleseed to FWO Base. The ordering and registration process on line was easy to use. Parking here is a problem and confusing. It got worked out though. The facility is nice. Plenty of product to browse while you wait on you equipment. The team was very friendly and professional. They really enjoy the sports they promote. Our guide was helpful and got us going quickly and safely. Their equipment was in excellent shape and plentiful to rent for our party of three. Took my two grandsons on an afternoon cruise on the river recently to make the most of the disappearing good weather. The river quiet, we didn't pass any other boats, and we had an enjoyable couple of hours. The canoe and equipment was adequate, but the customer service from FW Outfitters was totally absent. Prior to departure, we were effectively handed the canoe, two paddles and three life jackets, and left to our own devices. No safety guidance, no information about the river, no enquiries about whether I had any idea what I was doing with a canoe, nothing at all! On return, much the same. after sending my grandson up to the store to advise that we were back, two male staff members ambled down to the wharf, and with barely a word to me, dragged the canoe off, picked up the paddles and life jackets and wandered off. Hmmmmm, don't know if I will go back to them again, or recommend them to anybody else? read more

Did a last minute 2 hour kayaking trip and showed up without making reservations. Upon arrival, the "customer service" person instructed me to go online and complete a reservation and pay. She instructed me to do this while watching me over my shoulder. My question is, "why couldn't the customer service person provide customer service and complete the reservation for me on her computer/check out register"? My time wasn't valuable to her and it would've actually been customer service had she cared about my time/effort. We took the Captain Black's Canal Boat tour on 9/14. It was a beautiful day to be on the river. The Seabreeze launched fro Promenade park and it was easy on and easy off. Deplorable customer service, absolutely deplorable. This place cancelled our kayak reservation less than a hour from when the reservation was booked. They cited a reason that is nowhere to be found on their website and their confirmation materials. The truth is they had no reservations other than ours, and they simply wanted to cancel us. As of this writing, it is a beautiful day outside, perfect for kayaking. This kayak experience was a special birthday gift for my girlfriend and something we'd been planning for days. When I explained this, the representative essentially shrugged her shoulders and was nonplussed. She offered nothing to make up for this. Not even an apology. Take your business elsewhere. We just moved to Fort Wayne and decided to take the boat ride of the three rivers to learn about the area. I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. I am very familiar with the Maumee River and it DEFINITELY does not look like it does in Fort Wayne. The Maumee is much cleaner in Toledo. I was shocked at the condition of the rivers here. That said, the boat ride was fun. The information was great and we loved the view. Unfortunately, we chose a 90+ degree day to go. We wish the weather would have been cooler. I made plans several weeks ago to take a friend kayaking for her birthday (today), and the weather was perfect. I had never gone before and couldn't wait, except for the nerve pain shooting down my back that started a few days ago. Should I still go? Should I not? Ugh! My friend nearly talked me into bailing on the whole thing, but I just couldn't leave without trying. We were scheduled for two hours, and I thought it would be a miracle if I lasted that long. Once we slid into the mossy green water, the silence of the warm summer morning wrapped us in its coccoon. We barely spoke for the first 20 minutes or so, as we got pulled into the zen of the paddle strokes and the current beneath us and the occasional egret gracing our views overhead. A long, lazy conversation flowed as we were carried down the river; time passing like the luxurious sands it can sometimes be. I mentioned to my friend more than once that floating on water is one of those simple things that makes life extraordinary. I was filled to the brim with gratitude and peace. As the two hours wound their way down, we headed back to the ramp. It wasn't until I stood up and walked away from the kayak that I realized my nerve pain was completely gone. The miracle wasn't that I lasted the whole two hours. It's that I found complete relief from my pain in such a simple pleasure. But that's what nature - human and otherwise - can't seem to get through our thick skulls. Healing is what nature does best, if we let it. This week our family rented kayaks online from Fort Wayne Outfitters. The online process was very easy and seamless. Easy to navigate website. They also can accommodate walk ups. When we arrived at the riverfront, employees were down by the riverfront ready to assist us with everything we needed. I forgot to add a dry bag to reservation online and had also added an extra kayak we didn't need, but had no issue changing our reservation to include the bag and modify reservation on the spot. They have an easy stable loading and unloading dock making these tasks super simple. Also staff gave us simple hints to make those tasks easy. We kayaked both north and south on the river, both offering different points of interest around The Fort. They both were very enjoyable. The afternoon was perfect! Shout out to Chester! read more

Loved the bike, the checkout, however was deplorable. The women the day before had assured me I would only pay per hour extra after the full day had elspsed. The man who charged me on the return, had no clue. He reluctantly gave me a small discount on the total. Either way it was waaaay too expensive. If Fort Wayne's river bike paths and downtown had not been so charming, I would hsve been really ticked off! It's obvious this business has no competition..... hint, hint! read more

I took a stroll about 10 minute walk from my hotel Courtyard Marriot and they set me up on a great bike and a good hourly price and I hit the St. Mary trail...LOVE IT! I picked up my rented bike at my designated time and it was ready to go. Considering that they charge more to rent a "premium" road bike than it costs to rent a car, it seems reasonable to expect that details would be taken care of. The bike did not have bottle cages. The low end Shimano shifters were ergonomically inferior (Campy-like thumb shifters uncomfortably underneath the cable connection). When I investigated the measurements, an employee insisted the seat was as far back as it could go, when clearly there was an additional 2 cm, which I adjusted later on my own. The decent bike was equipped with 23 cm tires - hardly the standard these days. Staff seem incapable of, or unprepared for, deft customer interaction: my comment about the lack of bottle cages was met with silence. It feels, upon entering the shop, as if time has slowed - a stark contrast to the other major bike shop in town, where customer service is attentive, friendly, welcoming. read more

Excellent road bike I got to rent to continue triathlon training while out of town. My brother rented a hybrid which was perfect for him. He's now considering buying a bike (he lives here). How fortunate you all in Ft. Wayne are to have the Greenway to stay out of roadways! I'm amazed how few people in the area take advantage of it. Staff was helpful but would give 5 stars if they smiled and looked like they loved what they are fortunate enough to do (assuming they like biking, kayaking, outdoors), etc. I'd trade my job in a heartbeat :) read more

The guide was very knowledgable about the area and had a great sense of humor. The trip was very pleasant and ran on time. The new park (Promenade) is beautiful and I am so pleased to see all the people it attracts to the downtown area. I do wish they would clean up the banks of the river.
