I adore shopping at this ACE. I am new to this area and there is no other place I would rather spend my money at. I am a 2nd year gardener, and it seems my car drives itself to ACE and leaves me in the garden section. I love when Lily in the garden section is working! I've shopped here for the last two years and dealt with unhelpful employees, out of stocks, weird closures and poor customer service because they are the only spot in town, but tonight took the cake. I pulled in at 5:20 (they close at 6). I needed to grab some bags of bark and a few plants. As I tried to walk in the garden department I was told it was closed. 40 minutes before the store? I grabbed a plant from the display out front and walked inside. 5 employees standing around chatting about being tired and can't wait to get off work. I asked for 4 bags of bark. Cashier said "sorry. Soils are kept in the lumber yard and it's closed now." I asked how late they were open, he said 6. I asked what time they close the lumber yard and he shrugged and said he didn't know. I asked another employee holding down a counter if he could go grab me 4 bags. He said no, it was closed. Bunch of lazy lazy lazy people. Hope the owner knows they have staff who turn customers away 40 minutes before closing. When I got to my car it was 5:29. 31 minutes before closing and you can't get anything that anyone has to help with. Sad for a small town that boasts community and friendliness. Pays to shop local and avoid big boc chains such as Ace. Purchased an expensive Leopold range finder, opened it up and home to install the battery and the battery compartment would not open. I went back to Ace within in hour of purchase and was told I would have to contact Leopold directly for replacement and they would not refund my money. So do yourself a favor for any optics or firearms purchases go to Grundmans in Rio Dell or Wildwood Saw in Fortuna. read more

Hate giving one star reviews. Shopped Ace Hardware Fortuna for years, never had any issues. But a week ago I purchased a space heater for my garage, I thought I could adjust the space I had so it could fit. I took it out of the box to see if it would work and it was a smidge too tall even with a few modifications to the space. Yesterday I went into return it and they wouldn't return it per a return policy change. They said they are hard to resell once opened and to go through the manufacture for the return. Nothing is wrong with the heater. When businesses start doing this, it's a red flag that might not be going so well for them. I purchased it 5 days ago for $292.94. I wasn't told about the return policy when I purchased it nor was anything printed on the receipt about a return policy. I've returned items there before with no issues. It's frustrating when businesses aren't forthcoming. If products aren't returnable that information needs to be put out there, told at time of purchase if it's not posted by product (which I didn't see any signage) and also printed on the receipt (which nothing is on the receipt about a return policy) I have no issues keeping it I will find a use for it but I felt this review was necessary because I do shop this store for most of my projects and I will think a little more when making big purchases from there. It is the store's responsibility to make the consumer aware of their policies not wait until it comes up and then tell the consumer. read more

I flip houses for a living and shop at several hardware stores in Humbolt. By far my favorite is fortuna. The people there are family always remember your name and will take the time to solve problems with hand in hand. my employer and I worked through to solve a gas line problem with an ace employee. I can't tell you how much it helps to be hands on and be able to fit the parts together, touch and see what will work with several ways to do the same job. They gave us options how to set it up and what was best for us. Like some other stores where the associate will tell you there way of doing it and that's it. We were in gauged and bouncing different ideas off each other until we were satisfie. i really can't express how valuable this is at a place you go to regularly. I was going to name names but the entire staff is really there to give you the best experience of your shopping needs! I would and I do recommend the fortuna ace hardware and is first on my list. Now if I can get the popcorn dispenser figured out I will be set. Thank you for letting me know I can rely on your store and any staff member for all my needs!! Loved this store. The nursery part had a some very nice plants, the young man who helped us was very knowledgeable about all the different rose bushes, plants both indoor and outdoor. The inside part of the store was very clean well stocked with a good amount of staff. I will return. They had a lot of different products. I do very much so enjoy shopping at this location. I purchased multiple tools and materials here for my secret projects that I can't tell you about. Neil in the firearms department is by far the best salesman I have ever met, he should work at a car dealership. I have found Ace Hardware to be one of the most UNhelpful stores around! Most of the time the staff seems reluctant to answer questions and locate items. It has gotten to the point that I am reluctant to go into the store. As a result, if the item I need is on Amazon, that's where I buy it lately. Today I needed an item from the nursery, and asked if they had it, I was rather brusquely told me that I'd have to come in and look for myself. I realize this may be a bit out of their control, but when the Ace Hardware website, Google, Yelp, etc all say open until 6:30 pm, it'd be nice if that was the case. Google and Yelp I kinda get, but their own website? Only the phone message says until 6 pm, and you have to go through a phone menu to get the hours. Guess I get to wait for my online pickup. Otherwise, in terms of selection, prices, etc. it's average. Meh. read more

A fast update, I have found that ordering online and picking up curbside is a good workaround. I have used this process three times, it works. The staff that brings order out is pleasant and efficient. It makes it easy for me to purchase there, but if I ran the place I would understand that means customers are going to limit their purchases by not being in the store. read more

She was very courteous and knew where the item that I came in for. Then I asked another employee where I could buy some ice. If I could give them a Zero Rating I would. Staff was busy joking with themselves and ignored me all the way into the store. No help in my section, one employee looked straight at me and didn't say hi, but turned the corner as I went to ask a question. I have a bladder issue, and I asked if I could use the bathroom, and was told No! I asked who to complain to and that person told me he was the store owner. Said they didn't have a public restroom. I explained that I wasn't the public, that I was his customer and I needed help. He said that he wasn't going to make his restroom available to customers because he just spent $850 on a Roto-Rooter to fix it and only wanted his employees to use it! Lost my business! Recently, while on vacation near Fortuna, we developed a problem with our campstove and went to ACE to find a part. However, the part didn't quite fit our stove, but one of the service clerks in the sporting goods department went above and beyond his service to help us by retrofitting the part to fit our stove. We are so appreciative of that, and commend him for being so willing to help. ACE did it again!--the employees at this store were great! read more

I love Ace! This particular Ace now has a corner of their store dedicated to farmhouse chic home decor and I am in love with it! It feels like at least once a month we're popping over to Ace for something, whether it be ant traps, weed killer, light bulbs, paint, a Christmas tree in December...you name it and they've got it! Ace has always had incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable staff. It seems like any time I have a question about products, I can always find someone to give me a comprehensive explanation of their offerings, allowing me to choose the best product. They also have a great array of kitchen items, snacks, gifts (things like candles from Stephen's Candlery and Fire & Light), cold drinks, candy, and sale items. There are almost always bins or boxes of heavily discounted items. Even though the prices are already fantastic, they often mail out promotional coupons for $5 off my purchases thanks to being a part of their rewards program. I have yet to visit a hardware store with such an extensive range of offerings, and I'm lucky to live so close by! read more

This place is a poor place to shop. They do NOT honor any warranties. I bought a lawn tractor battery there some time ago. It failed after less than 3 months. The Ass't Manager/ Mgr, whatever the heck he was refused to replace the battery, claiming that it had to have been misused for it to fail. Huh?!!! Misused?! How the hell do you misuse a tractor battery???? Needles to say, I don't shop there anymore. I'll drive out of my way to Eureka, Redding, Ukiah, where ever, to not give them a dime. Online shopping at Amazon is pretty good as they are always cheaper than Fortuna Hardware and I've NEVER had a problem returning, replacing or getting a refund from Amazon. There is a good nursery, kitchen items, building and painting supplies, work clothing and shoes, plumbing, electronics, and lots of quality tools. The staff is knowledgable and helpful. read more

A manager was called out to help with soil confusion and was nothing but rude. She was irritated to be doing her job and was snippy and snide. I am a frequent customer at Ace in Fortuna. Usually the staff is very friendly, but today I experienced some hostility from one of the staff members because I did not measure the rope I cut before attempting to purchase it. There was not a measuring stick in sight and several employees passed me, but did not ask if I needed help. One of the female staff members was irritated that she had to measure it herself, tangled up my rope, and slammed it down on the counter. I was not rude in any way, and did not deserve this treatment simply because of a little confusion. From now on I will give my business to a locally owned store. read more

This is truly the best place to shop. Everyone is so friendly and accommodating. They even get to know your name. I also, on more than one occasion, shopped online at Ace and have had items delivered to the store for free and I just go pick them up. My praise also includes the garden department.
