I pulled in at 5:20 (they close at 6). I needed to grab some bags of bark and a few plants. As I tried to walk in the garden department I was told it was closed. 40 minutes before the store? I grabbed a plant from the display out front and walked inside. 5 employees standing around chatting about being tired and can't wait to get off work. I asked for 4 bags of bark. Cashier said "sorry. Soils are kept in the lumber yard and it's closed now." I asked how late they were open, he said 6. I asked what time they close the lumber yard and he shrugged and said he didn't know. I asked another employee holding down a counter if he could go grab me 4 bags. He said no, it was closed. Bunch of lazy lazy lazy people. Hope the owner knows they have staff who turn customers away 40 minutes before closing. When I got to my car it was 5:29. 31 minutes before closing and you can't get anything that anyone has to help with. Sad for a small town that boasts community and friendliness. Won't stop here again.

I enjoyed talking to an older gentleman (about my age) who works there. We talked about fishing, coastal life (since I lived in Mendocino for 16 yrs), and this gem of a store. I've been to dozens of "old fashioned" candy shops around the country that are either really cheesy or just are so overpriced you won't want to buy anything. This candy shop has really nice variety of old fashioned US brands, current novelty ones that kids like, and quality imports. Prices on candy are very fair. They have a good selection of regional sodas that are pretty $$$ individually but you buy in sets of 6 it's more reasonable. Also the staff is INCREDIBLY friendly and helpful.
