Nine of us went to Foundry last night for my wife's birthday and had a great time. The beer selection was top-notch and the bar folks were cool and friendly. Our table was ready quickly and we were able to go to it when we were finished at the bar. The service at the table was fast and attentive. Given the number of people at the table I was impressed that the orders came out at a steady clip so no one was left waiting and nothing appeared to have been sitting and waiting. "So the mechanics of preparing and delivering the food were good - but what about the food itself?," you may wonder. There the answer is terrific! I ate a lot last - oysters, charcuterie and flat bread with bacon, potatoes and gorgonzola. All of it was delicious. For desert I had a brownie sundae - also really tasty. I sampled freely from around the table and liked everything I tried. We also had a nice selection of wines - couldn't tell you just what as they were being ordered down the table. Since it was my wife's birthday the bill came to me and I was bracing for something big given that most people had appetizers (or two in my case), entrees, salads, deserts, drinks, after dinner drinks etc. It wasn't outrageous by any means. Seems like a very popular spot. This doesn't always translate to "good", but it seems like they'll stick around for a while at least. I tried the poutine and burger. Poutine was a fail since they used shoestring fries and that's not how it's done, son. Burger was fine but not memorable. Service was trying hard to be 5-star super fancy (fold your filthy napkin when you use the can). Cool interior. This place is basically Joshua Tree's older second cousin but a bit more refined. read more

This place is really good- my only complaint is it's always busy! I went here on a Saturday night and they had to cram my 8-person party into what looked like a 5-person table. A few months later, I went there with some friends for a drink after work on a random Monday, and somehow it was still really busy! They told us if we were only ordering drinks and apps, we couldn't sit at a table. Chock it up to it being new and good! With that said, the food is really good for a pub- definitely upscale. Another plus is their unique imported beer menu. The atmosphere is really cool too, definitely an improvement from most of the other ultra-casual pubs in Davis (think The Burren and Joshua Tree). I ended up back at Foundry for a work function. And I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. First, the bad: We were a group with an early reservation, yet the manager or host/hostess didn't think we were worth much space as they crammed us around two small tables even though there was plenty of space. Not good customer service. Also bad: Prices for beer. Yikes! $8 for a Goose Island! Also, someone in the party was served a strangely chilled red wine?! The good: The food is much improved. I was very happy with my Nicoise Salad -- Tuna was perfect, everything was great. We shared some appetizers: calamari, poutine & a Mediterranean plate. The calamari & Mediterranean plate were solid, but I didn't try the poutine (though I'll say it mostly went untouched). Everyone else in the party (though cramped) seemed to enjoy their food as well -- the flatbreads got raves, as did the lentil plate, but someone who ordered the vegetable sandwich said the bread was a bit much. And the disgusting shrimp dish I had last time has happily disappeared from the menu. Based on food alone, I'd probably now give it 4 stars, but the customer service & ridiculous prices for beer dip it down. read more

Despite the beer selection not being as expansive as some of the other bars in the area they were out of first two beers I picked off the drinks list. I had the chef burger that was supposed to be great but the bun was semi-stale and the fries were greasier than some I've had at fast food joints. Bottom line: Go here for drinks and maybe appetizers if you don't mind spending 25% more than the food is worth. If you want decent food go elsewhere. read more

This is the second time I've been at the Foundry. The first time we sat down and had table service which was very good. The second time we ate at the bar and the service was not that good. The beer selection is very good but if you want a "higher" alcool beer please beware of the small cognac glasses they use to serve the beer. A beer should never be served in a cognac glass. It seems the bartenders need to be trained to serve beer in appropriate glasses. The food was excellent. I had the beef hamburger and is was top notch. The food was delicious if slightly overpriced. I got the croque madame, which was a toasty, crisp delicious thing that I thoroughly enjoyed putting in my mouth. The beer list is legit (though not super deep)...they have Ithica Flower Power IPA, which, if enjoy hops, will change your life. I first had this beer out in Northampton and it has since become one of my favorite beers (World Class ranking on BeerAdvocate). The atmosphere was a plus. It feel upscale without any pretentiousness. Service was kinda lame...slow and inattentive...but I was in no rush. All in all, this place is far above average. read more

I've been here twice and I enjoyed myself both times. The first time I had the standard pub burger. It was serviceable, meaning I had no complaints. If I recall correctly the burger seemed hand ground and hand pressed with a good mix of fat and meat. The second time, I came here after watching the premiere episode of Neil DeGrasse Tyson's Cosmos. It was 10pm and I needed something to eat. So I walked in, and when I asked the bartender for the food menu he gives me the late night menu. I'm a little disappointed since late night menus tend to suck, but I decide to pick something that looks promising: the pork belly sandwich. How does one screw up a pork belly sandwich? Recall that pork belly is essentially super flavorful fat masquerading as a cut of meat. They could grill it too much, leading to tough burned bits of meat on the outside. They could a select a cut of meat that doesn't have the right proportion of meat and fat. they could undercook it and fail to render the fat. They could pair the pork belly with an underwhelming sauce. (Remember that fat acts as a flavor transporter, so it's critical to pair pork belly with a sweet sauce.) But they did none of these heinous acts. They used a blueberry sauce to add sweetness to be transported by the fat. They balanced the sweetness with pickled onions and pickles to provide a tart taste at the end of every bite that leaves your mouth wanting another bite. The slice of the pork belly felt like mostly fat, though by visual inspection I saw some fibers of meat. Regardless, I still got enough chewiness from the cut of pork and the bread combined. In the end, I really can't complain about this pork belly sandwich. It was well executed and great food, especially after 10. read more

I've been here a few times. The food is pretty good, but nothing exciting. It is pretty much what you expect for new upscale American food mixed with some European influences. As for prices- it is what you expect for the style of place (trendy but not overly upscale). You might pay like $20-$25 an entree and $10 for a drink. What got me though is it was honestly the first time I have felt that service ruined a restaurant experience for me. Usually if service is bad, it just means I get more privacy with whoever I'm eating with, and might have to wait a little to get the check- no big deal. But here, it was atrocious. We ordered appetizers but opted to not order drinks. Once we said we wouldn't be getting drinks, the waiter became curt. He would just plop down a thing of water on the table, he wouldn't say anything. He was visibly annoyed that we would not order drinks (hey man, we at least ordered appetizers with our entrees). Bf and I went here for a late lunch, after seeing a post about this place on Facebook. Here's what we ordered: For Appetizers : Calamari laid on top of pepper relish(middle of dish) ,drenched on both the sides of the plate is aioli where our calamari was swimming in. Most place put those sauces on the side, just in case the other patrons doesn't like aioli. Poutine The menu says cheddar cheese curds, but reality it was mozzarella. Thus making the Bottom of cast iron pan extremely oily. Also some of the fries were burnt on it at the ends. Hmmm burnt smell and hints of cumin in the French fries. Entree's : Grilled chicken sandwich The chicken is drenched in a whiskey bbq sauce that has a hint of lemongrass or some sort. The bottom bun is drenched with siracha ranch. I understand it does say it comes with these sauces, however with such excess the buns was so soggy it was inedible. I ended of just eating the chicken with silverware My bf meal was the veal Bolognese. Overall not a bad meal but lacked any real flavor. The real big problem with this meal was for the price you pay for what essentially is ziti with meat sauce the portion was really small. Was the most expensive dish ordered and almost the smallest served. Overall the venue and the staffs very and pleasant, but the flavors was lacking. read more

While waiting for a show to start and being hungry. We went to the Foundry on Elm in Davis Sq. The atmosphere was very nice and our waitress Cassandra extrememly helpful in helping with the selections. The evening started off with the shrimp toast, stuffed dates that were wrapped in bacon, and some very nice giardiere of crispy veggies. The entrees were pork milanese with a wonderful sauce and crispy asparagus. The other was a very good burger with a side salad that was extremely fresh. Dessert was a brownie sundae but there was an apple crisp cheesecake that sounded delicious. This was a very nice place and if you are in Davis Sq, you would be wise the check this place out and sit down and enjoy. read more

Just what Davis has been missing! I've been looking forward to Foundry's opening for a while now, and it did not disappoint! My girl friend and I swung by last night after yoga for cocktails and oysters, and ended up calling my husband to meet us for dinner. The interior reminds me somewhat of Eastern Standard- huge beautiful bar, red leather chairs, mirrors, fantastic staff. The cocktail list is creative and fun without being intimidating, and their selection of draft beers is amazing! Their oysters were super fresh, and our dinners- salads, flatbreads, and the special, coq au vin, were fabulous. I have a feeling I'll become a regular here- whether just to grab a glass of wine after work, or more likely, eating wonderful dinners. Also- priced just right! read more

It's not a 5 star restaurant, but deserves all 4 stars here. The classic, dark and warm atmosphere was perfect for the cold evening. Maybe a little loud if you're sitting outside of a booth but then maybe I'm going deaf in my old age. I also loved the look of the menu - classic. This is just what Davis Square needed (sorry Gargoyles). The food was excellent and our waitress was splendid. I had the Pan-Seared Sea Scallops and tasted the spaetzle, and both were amazing. I went on a Thursday night and tried the daily drink special 'float'. I don't think I'll order another but it was fun and I'm glad they have something like this. The beer menu was top-notch as well. Laarv likes to go out to eat and she was excited to try a new place. She went on a Thursday evening and the place was not too crowded. Very big place too! Both Laarv and her companion ordered the chicken sandwich with avocado, jack cheese and a chipotle mayo. Laarv found the mayo to be far too spicy and the sandwich fell apart easily. The side of fries were extremely salty - too salty in fact. Overall a disappointing experience. Laarv's companion found the beer list and specialty drink list to be excellent however the house cherry infused Manhattan was too sweet for his taste. Laarv had a Stella and an Allagash White. For the Davis Square area you can certainly find other options to match the beer list and can find better food elsewhere. read more

A day after posting my last Yelp review, I got a phone call from owner of Foundry, who was deeply apologetic for what had happened. He said he looked into the situation himself, and said he found that a server had accidentally added an item from another table's bill to ours. He was upfront in taking the blame and admitting that this was no excuse for what happened. He also apologized for the fact that my boyfriend had to call three times to finally talk to a manager to have the incident looked at. He said he called because he wanted to show that they are honest people and didn't intend anything underhanded. The phone call seemed sincere, though I'm certain we never would've received it if not for the negative publicity of the Yelp review. The owner invited us to come and meet him for dinner at the restaurant. While we haven't taken him up on this, I did think it was a nice gesture. Overall, I appreciated this outreach, and was glad to hear that Foundry has a real human element and some concern for the well-being of customers. On the fence between three and four stars after all is said and done, but will go with four since Yelp doesn't allow half stars. read more

Foundry on Elm is great! My boyfriend and I had a reservation, but then got a little delayed on the way there. Could they push back our reservation 15 minutes? No problem. And seated us at a big booth - which cut down on the noisiness just enough. Our waiter was great, chatting comfortably and explaining the specials in great depth. The food was all really really good. Highlights included the charcuterie plate, the adorable pot of pickled farm vegetables, and the duck confit - a special that night - with cherries, frisee, walnuts and balsamic-pickled peaches. I came here for dinner this evening and ordered the lemon roasted chicken, which was two huge pieces of chicken (a leg and a breast, I believe) served with a salad of mixed greens and butter lettuce and some roasted potatoes. The portion size was enormous, but the flavors were unfortunately average. The chicken was bland--not much of the lemon-herb flavor that I had expected--and the potatoes were very plain as well. The salad greens were very fresh and a unique blend, which was a nice change from the usual spring-greens-and-spinach mix that you often get. But it was just that--lettuce with some vinaigrette on top--and the greens were not wilted, as the menu stated they would be. My husband ordered the fish special (roasted cod); he said it was good but not exceptional. In general, I don't think we'll be returning; the food just doesn't justify the prices, in my opinion. read more

Not so much. Asked for 4 different beers and they were out of all 4. Waited 47 minutes for our food- 4 burgers and one pizette. My burger was wrong, returned it and it came back wrong again- both times with cheddar and not the blue cheese i wanted. All of the burgers were way overlooked, some of us had dozens of fries, some less than 10. Service - Food - Great dinner and drinks when they finally made it to our table. We had the full spectrum of the menu and everyone enjoyed their meals. Craft cocktails we're delicious and a wide selection of spirits. The service left a lot to be desired. We were never checked in with after receiving drinks or food, correct utensils were not brought with the food ordered (steak knife or spoon for soup), and simple drinks took over 15 minutes to arrive without a busy bar. Our server even followed us to the curb claiming a merchant copy of the receipt had not been left and had us resign the same receipt we left in the folio. read more

Loved this place, cannot wait to go back. We got the french fries as an appetizer since they just looked so good and they didn't disappoint. Plus the complementary bread that was brought out was incredible. I ordered the Spaetzle for my entree and again was wowed. My difficult-to-please friend ordered the Salmon and said it was the best she ever had. My group shared several desserts including the creme brulee, pumpkin cheesecake, brownie sundae, and trio of sorbets. All incredible. The beer selection seemed impressive, but I was driving so I didn't partake. Service was great. Waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. We just went for dinner, but I guess they're now open for lunch and perhaps brunch (or brunch will be coming) and I cannot wait to try those meals there. The location is great--seconds from the Davis Square T, though we drove and had no trouble finding a parking spot. read more

Had two experiences here, so let's break them down: 1. Went for my birthday on the day of the snowstorm of the year in Boston, so they had half the waitstaff working but were trying to do their best with what they had. Wife and I always order too much, but we figure it's a good thing. Our waiter (sorry, forgot name) was really good...there when we needed him, not when we didn't. He suggested a few drink options which all turned out great. Food was delicious, definitely give you more than your money's worth (calamari was huge but great, little heavy on the breading but didn't stop me from eating way too much of it). Dinner was tasty but again we ordered too much so we had a doggy-bag or two. 2. Just having drinks on a Saturday afternoon, weather was great so large windows were open and the place was busy (3-4pm on a Saturday = not expecting a crowd but they had one). Tried new beverages this time, even had friends stop in with kids and was a friendly environment for them while not dumbing things down for the adults. Tried the pickled vegetables for an app which were great to share but maybe a little much just between 2 people (maybe 3 or 4 could actually finish without the pickling being overbearing). Nice Saturday afternoon environment to relax with friends. Overall the vibe was great, definitely my kind of place where the bar is long, the drinks are really good, and the crowd is alive. Seems to get crowded early so be ready to enjoy the bar before you eat. One con: On our second visit, we sat close to the host stand and at one point, one of the managers was speaking to a server/host in a way that's not for guests to see. I know people screw up in this industry (I'm a server myself), but reaming someone out that close to guests is not acceptable. I don't want to name someone, but it was definitely a manager belittling a subordinant in front of guest. Do that somewhere else. read more

Foundry has the potential to be a well-rounded restaurant and bar but there is always one odd thing that happens every time I've eaten there. If you actually want to have a conversation while eating dinner, you should go before 6 PM or after 10 PM. It can be incredibly loud even in the back. They have a nice selection of beverages at reasonable prices. The food it hit or miss - I've had meals that have been OK and meals that haven't been great. They seem to have re-designed their menu in the last few months so hopefully it will become more consistent. Service is hit or miss throughout the meal. Waiters tend to be more attentive at the beginning of the meal but then forget about you. I do like that they offer sparking water. It's not my favorite place but it is close to our house and convenient so chances are I'll be back again. read more

My new favorite Bar. I've been returning a few times so far and each time has gotten better. Patrick the bartender has made me some of the best cocktails i've had in Boston yet (no small feat with so many amazing places in this town). The food is excellent, well made, with well sourced ingredients and the right amount of culinary flare. Atmosphere and decor are inviting and feel great, just the right amount of fancy yet still laid back. The place gets PACKED on the weekends, so be prepared to stand around and get smushed like every other bar in Boston that is worth its weight, but if you catch the place earlier or later when it is less packed, its a relaxing place to be. Came here after dinner in Davis Sq on a Friday night and enjoyed drinks with friends. The restaurant is pretty spacious and the crowd was mostly young professionals. We started off at the bar but ended up getting a table towards the back. The seating was comfortable for our large group (maybe 15 people) and the atmosphere was nice for having a conversation with the person sitting next to you without having to shout. I would definitely come back if I am in the area for the atmosphere and drinks since the drink selection is quite large. read more

What we had (with grades): Beverages - lemon drop martini (A); Foundry on Elm Pale Ale (B-) Appetizer - Carmelized Brussel sprouts (B) Dinner - Pan-seared Statler Chicken (A+...some of the best chicken we've ever had...period) served with crispy mushrooms, baby kale, goat cheese polenta, w/sherry jus. (The polenta, btw, was died-and-gone-to-Heaven good...). Also had the Smoked Gouda Mac n' Cheese (A/A+)...very, very tasty. Also worth noting - our server was helpful, attentive, and friendly. Stopped in on a Tuesday night after looking around Davis Square as the commuters were returning from the City. Greeted and seated with warmth and speed. Such a hidden gem in Davis square! Love this area and this cute crafty restaurant. Has amazing food and wide unique selection of beer for all types of palettes. Just a heads up, this review is coming from someone who isn't into uppity "hip" places like this. Atmosphere was dull, packed with young professionals. The music was half baked and dreadful, almost as if a frat house circa 2011 had made the playlist. The food was not bad but the prices were a bit steep for the quality. Service was great, good selection of beers and cocktails. I personally wouldn't recommend this place to anyone but I'd say you at least have to give it a go before making up your mind. Had a reservation at a specific time, and wasn't seated until after 30 minutes of waiting and AFTER my reservation was supposed to be honored. I had elderly family members standing for 30 minutes because they don't even have waiting space. No updates, nothing. Food was mediocre - not any options for dairy or gluten free folks so don't even bother coming here. Snobby environment and will never ever return. Brunch for 3 and a 6yr old. Food was great! Nothing to complain about there. Others have said not good for kids, but they have a children's menu so it was fine. If you want something like Chucky Cheese then go to Chucky Cheese. Place was clean and had a nice drink menu. Only reason for 4 stars was service. It was busy, but even when it slowed down we were forgotten about. Our appetizer plates sat in a pile on our table even after other staff had brought us our main course and a drink round. Will try it again because aside from the service the place was great. read more

I'm already obsessed and it has only been open one week. I agree w/most people on here that this is JUST what Davis Sq needed. We were fortunate to be a part of the "friends and family" weekend and were able to try a ton of menu and beverage items which were all stellar. The Penne, Vegetable Brochette, and the Burger were three standouts for me. The flatbreads, while very tasty need to have the ingredients spread out a bit more, because there is a lot of crust. The service was impeccable and I continue to be impressed (I've been three times now) by the waitstaff, bar tenders and cordial host stand. The late night menu could have a few more options, but i'm just happy i am able to get a late bite up till midnight even on a sunday! i love you Foundry xoxo jL read more
