Recently moved to Ventura County. I found Four Paws and schedule an appointment to get my dog seen and meet the vet. My dog needed a routine test. She has a history of mast cell tumors and we had discovered a bump we wanted to get checked as well. The receptionist/assistant was really nice and sweet. They placed us in a room almost right away and we didn't wait long inside the room either which was nice. Here is where it turns around and the 2 star rating. The vet came in and didn't really acknowledge us. Just started doing vet things which I guess I shouldn't be upset about. It didn't feel as if they enjoyed being with animals though. When I brought up the bump they shrugged and seemed like they didn't want to do much about it. All they said was we would have to perform the surgery to remove it and send it off to see if it was a mast cell tumor or not. Once they said that, that's when I knew I needed to find a new vet. I love my dog and I knew this vet wasn't going to treat my dog like family. Clearly this vet is loved by many based on the reviews but they weren't for us. We found a new one and they were able to sample the bump and they discovered a new one as well that they sampled and luckily both came back negative so no surgery for my little one. read more

Understaffed, slow as ever and prices super high, they charge what a normal vet charges, but they aren't normal, they have very few employees but are way over booked so they take FOREVER to do the simplest of tasks (wanted several hours to clean my dogs' ears). Dr.Rivera and his staff made an incredibly sad day a beautifully bittersweet send-off... I said goodbye to my sweet Panda kitty on May 6th. He would have been 20 in October. I miss him dearly still. He was a wonderful part of my life and always wanted to be close to me. He talked. A lot. And answered back. ( Cat people know what I mean). But sadly it was his time to go and I believe he was ready. The doc and his lovely and caring assistants there were two of them, made this difficult time be a moment that I will cherish. There is a door off to the side inside the room that you can open up and walk outside. I was extremely emotional but being able to hold my kitty in the end next to the lovely flowers they have and the birds chirping around us made it special and perhaps not as harsh and sterile. I can't thank you enough for assisting me through that very difficult event. My only regret is that I didn't give him more kisses and more praise for being the wonderful friend that he was. But maybe he did know how much he was loved. I believe he felt the true love in the end. I highly recommend Dr.Rivera and his staff for your pet care needs. We brought our dog in for updated vaccinations because we needed to kennel her for a few days & didn't realize they were expired. This was the closest vet. They were able to accommodate us quickly and the office is very clean. They gave her an intra-muscular vaccine on her right hip/buttocks area. She had a lot of swelling where they injected her which is a "normal" bad reaction for a vaccine, I guess. However, she developed a hard lump/hematoma after that wasn't there before and it is there permanently now even many many months after. It seems like it bothers her- she tries to bite & itch it. Seems like a problem was created that wasn't there before just for routine vaccinations. read more

So my first visit a few years ago with my 120 pound GSD with a broken toenail wasn't great for a couple reasons mainly because he's so big and it was his first time there so very nervous which made staff nervous too - again, he's HUGE so who wouldn't be! ******BUT we have gone back to Four Paws with all 3 of our dogs and Dr. Rivera is awesome and so is his staff. They explain everything to you and he even gets the book out so you can have a visual as well. He's very thorough and I would send anyone to him for regular vet care as they don't do emergencies which is understandable cause they're a small practice. And it's a plus that they are in walking distance from my house! Don't come here if you have a big dog that is anxious. This vet does not know how to properly care for those animals and instead intensified the way my dog felt. Went to a different vet after going here and my dog had a MUCH better experience. i see on here that many people do like going to this vet however like i said before if your dog is anxious and big he will attempt to refuse to work on them. I'd like to start this post by saying I rarely leave negative reviews on any platform, especially for small businesses as I understand it can impact someone's livelihood. With that being said... If you're looking for a 1920's approach to medical care, this is the place for you. If you're a woman voicing concerns, they will fall on deaf ears and you will be made to feel unintelligent, inadequate, and guilt tripped into believing you're a terrible pet owner. When brought in for an ailment, your pet will find one of two treatment plans: take these drugs that probably won't do anything, or just rub some dirt in it cuz it'll be fine. Dr. Rivera has the emotional intelligence and compassion of a discarded head of cabbage. If his bedside manner is anything to base assumptions on, he chose veterinary medicine because people couldn't stand him. His outdated misogynistic and entitled attitude makes wanting to take your furry family member to the vet a last resort. His air of baseless self importance makes you want to gouge your eyes out, and communication with him is impossible because nothing you say matters. Due to his misdiagnosis and inability to listen to any sort of concern, our dog's health issue escalated to needing a trip to the emergency vet with possible surgery needed. If I could sum this all up in as few words as possible, I would say that the only reason you should bring your animal companions here is if you hate them and want them out of your life ASAP. read more

I adopted 2 pugs in October 2021 and as a new puppy mommy I only wanted the best for my fur babies. I was referred by my favorite puppy dog owner to Four Paws. I knew if Maureen went there, I could trust them with my babies. From Day 1 I have been impressed. Both of my fur babies have had all of their vaccines here. No problems at all. The doctor even gave us free heart worm pills and deworm pills. Very careful handling my fur babies and very knowledgeable. All the staff are great too. Bringing my fur babies water and wiping up little puppy pee accidents and just amazing. We decided to get the puppies spayed and neutered and chipped here too. We were so nervous because our dogs are so precious to us. They had no problems during surgery and it's now been 3 days past surgery and both puppies are doing great. I highly recommend this Vet! And I'm very picky and my puppies are very spoiled! Dr. Rivera is a superstar Vet and very good bedside manner. He even checked their teeth during surgery and removed some baby teeth that were ready to come out. I can't begin to tell you how impressed I am with this vet. I will always bring my precious pets here. No doubt Dr. Rivera will be my fur babies doctor for life! A+++++++++ P.S. They are also a LOT more affordable than other vets in the area. Thank goodness! Some vets really over charge but not Four Paws. My friend who adopted one of the siblings got a quote for the same surgery as my pugs and her quote was $200 more for the same surgery for same sex dog. read more

First visit today! Usually go to Ohana but since moving to SP, wanted someplace closer. My community FB group actually had a thread going about this place and a couple people shared bad experiences. I took a look at the reviews from here (yelp) too, and Google. Seemed like there were many good reviews so I took my chances. I'm glad I did! I def felt welcome and tended to from start to finish. The Dr was very knowledgeable and taught me a few things about my breed. He was very thorough in telling me what we needed now and what we will need in the future for my pup. I feel the price was fair, $85 for an exam and two vaccinations. Also was given (free) a month of chewables for fleas and worms. I will never turn down a try before you buy! The ladies in front were kind and friendly. Overall a great visit and we will def be back. read more

Short Story: My experience with Dr. Rivera left the impression that he is very unprofessional, unprepared and has a horrible bedside manner. Long Story: I'm between vets right now as my dog's usual vet left the clinic he was working at, so I turned to Four Paws to handle a dental cleaning for my dog Rupert. Rupert has a health condition so it's extra important he gets attentive vets. I sent all of Rupert's records in to Four Paws weeks in advance to make sure everything was good. The day of the cleaning I'm meeting Dr. Rivera for the first time. Dr. Rivera comes in the vet office and asks *me* what the issue is with my dog. He didn't know Rupert's name and was not even aware he was there for a dental. Knowing Dr. Rivera hasn't read any of Rupert's backstory or notes, I told him about a white phlegm substance that's been in the back of Rupert's throat for a month. Rupert saw a specialist about this who said when he has the dental they should take a sample of the substance in his throat to diagnose it. I forwarded this email to Four Paws weeks prior to Rupert's dental. Dr. Rivera starts forcing his finger down Rupert's mouth without asking me, trying to look at the back of his throat. I'm confused because if he needs to look down Rupert's throat he could have just done that while he was under during the cleaning to make him more comfortable. Then Dr. Rivera starts talking about how "difficult" this cleaning will be, and how there could potentially be a lot of blood when they try to diagnose the white phlegm in his throat. At this point Dr. Rivera is noticing my reluctancy and says "you don't seem to be too comfortable with me" or something to that effect. My head is absolutely spinning at this point. He's not offering any reassurance, he's just putting blame on me for not feeling comfortable with him after he's telling me how difficult and bloody this dental is going to be. He then says if I don't feel comfortable with him than to go elsewhere. I immediately left the office at that point and drove home with my dog. How would anyone possibly feel comfortable leaving their pet with this person after all of that? I couldn't even imagine a worse way for Dr. Rivera to have conducted himself that morning. He literally said and did all of the wrong things. It's extremely disappointing because I've had to cancel 4 other dental appointments for Rupert in the past because he wasn't healthy enough to be put under due to his health condition. On the day of his dental appointment at Four Paws he was finally healthy enough to have this done and now he will have to wait even longer thanks to the carelessness of Four Paws. read more

Took my girlfriends cat in for chocking episodes and to inquire about a sanitary trim due to her cat being very difficult to trim nails and hair. The vet never took her out of the carrier and told me a sanitary cut would cost $350. I left having to pay $55 dollars for nothing and took her cat to Ohana pet hospital. The vet there diagnosed a upper respiratory infection and gave us antibiotics, they also quoted me $150 for the sanitary cut instead of $350. Its been two weeks and our cat hasn't had any episodes since. read more

I start by saying I have never been there. But, it's the first impression that counts. I adopted a dog from Animal Services. They advised that I should reach out to the vets for a complimentary wellness exam. This dog is 10 years old and very arthritic. But, she'll be worth every penny we spend to keep her happy. When I called Four Paws, upon referral, I told them about my new (old) dog and that I'd adopted her. I said I wanted to start with the wellness exam but that would be only the first of many visits. I was advised VERY CLEARLY that their vets do not do wellness exams for adopted animals. When I expressed my sadness about this, she said, "That's our practice. We do not do free wellness exams." I didn't want a free ride. Only trying to start the ball rolling for what is going to be a possible expensive venture. I am also capable of understanding the basic English language so I don't really find "abrupt" as a positive attribute. I found another Vet that was great on the phone. They spent time asking me about the dog, thanking me for taking on such an endeavor and scheduled our first appointment. read more

If you have a pit bull don't bother coming here. The minute we brought my dog in we were treated as if he was this vicious animal. We were ushered into a room because there was another dog in the waiting room and there was not a bark or action from either dog that there would be any type of aggressive interaction between the two! The vet was so terrified he would not come close to my dog and attempted to "treat him" From the door! For a vet to be so terrified of an animal without even trying to interact with him maybe this isn't the right field for him! Such a lack of professionalism from him it was a joke!! There was no testing or real Exams done for my dog and I was told what he had was common in pit bulls. We were sent on our way with not even a follow up appointment I felt like they just wanted us out of the door! Thank god I set up an appointment with Ohana vet clinic on Faulkner where they actually treated him and did further testing and found that my poor dog was severely anemic and lost so much blood it was a miracle he was walking around sad to say he had to be put down from the amount of blood he lost. I cannot believe how irresponsible this vet is. I brought my dog in because he had a mass on the side of his mouth. Without running any test on the mass, he advised my dog had cancer. treatment was to either remove two masses since he felt a second one in his Chest or euthanize. Prognosis was not good that surgery would solve the problem. He said the mass might be gone or could come back in days to weeks. He showed compassion for dogs not suffering. I came home devastated. Thinking the best decision was to euthanize my dog. As the days progressed, I had dought this was the beat decision. My dog was very active and happy. I decided to get a second opinion. Emergency vet ran some test did not feel a second mass, shaved area and took a sample to test for cancer. The mass on his face is an abscess. Pet lovers think twice before going to this vet. read more

The office staff was very friendly and I had read good things about their vet. If our cat had been sick the Dr probably could have helped. Our cat is "special needs" he has a lot of problems and needed something to settle him down so he could have a normal life. He also has a deformed front leg which he was born with but the vet suggested x-rays and breaking the leg to reset it when it had never been broken in the first place. He kept slamming our cat on the table to try and get the medicine down him and kept saying "it's a cat" Now he knew the cat's name and sex so that doesn't seem he likes some animals too much. My husband finally moved in before he tried to force him on the table. The medicine he gave us didn't work and they claimed they couldn't give him anything else. I knew better because I have had difficult rescue cats for years. I tried an online Vet who was great!! He listened to all of the symptoms and recommended CBD. After months of trying to deal with our new "crazy" cat we finally had some relief. read more

The front desk staff was nice, but the doctor was pretty rough with my dog and didn't take the time to build trust with him. Instead, he pulled him by the collar and said the procedure would be difficult because he was hiding under the bench. My dog is incredibly friendly and has never met a person he doesn't like. The doctor ended up putting a muzzle on him and my dog was not interested in being near him. He wasn't very nice to me either, just very gruff and not kind. Maybe he was having a bad day or something, but my dog very obviously did not feel safe. When the receptionist came in, my dog was back to normal, wanting pets and cuddles and running right up to her. But the doctor was very obviously frustrated with his anxiety and slight timidity.
