Birch Tree Books & Plants is a really interesting combination of a business…read more The store itself is chock full of books and, of course, plants in a series of little rooms in a house in downtown Leesburg.  It's a fun place to wander through and look at what is on each shelf and in the corners.  There are other cute quirks such as a wheel you can spin with each purchase.  You can win candy or a small prize among other options.  It's a little extra fun and the kids loved it when we visited.  We were there for an author talk which took place upstairs in a bigger, open and light-filled room.  The set up worked very well, providing a casual atmosphere but also one that was very intimate due to the smaller number of chairs the space could accommodate. The event was well run and we will definitely keep our eye on the calendar for future events.  Parking is convenient in nearby garages.

It is also quite small, which makes the inventory important. Unfortunately, their inventory is heavy on romance, historical fiction, some new releases, and children's books, which don't happen to be genres I read often. If these are your genres, Birch Tree should be on your to visit list! It is a very cute bookshop and will make some readers immensely happy.

They do not charge, rather they ask you donate to either The Heroes Journey (nonprofit that has helped Afghanistan refugees and Veterans with PTSD) or Disabled American Veterans. But no requirement to donate. Great place to spend 20 minutes or a few hours chatting to the owner! It is located inside what comes off as an office building. Once inside there the smell of books is in the air. Love that smell! There's a few racks for adult books. There is a great selection of kids books and products. The bathroom is so cute! It's filled with book posters and is very clean. There is a baby changing station and they even had a few diapers and wipes available just incase. How thoughtful. Bonus for a bathroom and a cute bathroom at that!

Store manager Christopher,…read more We stopped by with our son, who wore his motorcycle gear, balaclava and all, as one might wear a shield against a windy day. We had only intended a brief visit, to sip a drink, browse a few books and mostly remained together, a small family wandering among your shelves. (max visit time 15 minutes) Yet one of your employees, your assistant who passed by our son while he was momentarily alone, muttered under his breath, not once but twice, that the face covering must come off. He did not stop. He did not speak directly. He did not address us, the parents. There was no "excuse me," no polite guidance. ONLY muttered judgment. It was a small thing, but in it was a certainty: our son, a minor, had been profiled and treated disrespectfully. When our son brought this to our attention, we were at the café. The same employee continued from a distance, his tone sharp, dismissive, cocky even, claiming he had "told him twice" to remove it. Told him? Excuse me, are you his guardian? And then he declared that wearing a mask to hide your identity in any store is a felony in Virginia. That, by any measure, is inaccurate. The law requires proof of intent of wanting concealing one's identity. Something our son (Wearing ALL his motorcycle GEAR without helmet), calmly browsing with his parents, was clearly not doing. The entire encounter...the indirect comments, the lack of professionalism, the misapplied law, was wholly inappropriate for a minor accompanied by his parents. Staff may be reminded that customers even minors, deserve respect, clarity, and honesty. A little courtesy goes a long way. The statement regarding Virginia law was, quite simply, wrong. It was tossed out as if this law were a blanket statement "felony to wear a mask in a store." In truth, the law is far more subtle, far more sensible than that. It speaks of intent, of committing theft, assault, or some other misdeed while hiding one's face. Simply wearing a mask, with your parents by your side, wandering among books, or shielding yourself against the wind, does not, and never could, meet that standard. And even a store policy, no matter how strict, cannot turn an innocent action into a crime, nor justify rudeness, muttered commands, or the singling out of a child. To claim otherwise is to misunderstand the law entirely. In Virginia, there is no sweeping law that declares wearing a mask in a store a felony. Laws about concealing one's identity do exist, yes, but they are narrow, precise, and bound by circumstance. They speak not of ordinary people, browsing quietly with their families, but of those whose intent drifts toward mischief or crime. -Customers who prefers facts to fiction

The curation is incredible- everything seems (and probably is!) hand picked and arranged beautifully. There were some really special editions, too, like a gorgeous fabric-covered edition of The Correspondent with deckled edges. There is a cute little rack of stationery at the front with a great selection of greeting cards, too! Aside from all of these wonderful things, the bookshop is just gorgeous, too- it's a beautiful teal that makes the books pop and look like works of art. Whoever the female cashier was at register #4565. Not a single Hello. She did ask if I had a rewards card, but got frustrated when I tried to search for it. She didn't even do the bare minimum. She didn't offer a bag when it was RAINING HARD and I had purchased more than 3 books . She handed me one after I asked, and then didn't even bag them herself. (You're getting paid to be a cashier, act like one.) Mind you, this is the second time I've experienced a rude cashier with poor, disgruntled attitude.

I visit this B&N location quite often, and I like it for several reasons…read more 1. There is always parking when I visit 2. I like the way the store is set up/organized 3. I like that this B&N has CHAIRS!!! I think the chairs are such an underrated feature of B&Ns, and I appreciate that this one has little reading 'nooks' throughout the store, so you can kind of hang out and enjoy the bookstore ambiance while you read and maybe sip your little drinky drink! This is one of the few Barnes locations in the surrounding areas that actually has chairs and/or book nooks. The employees are very nice and helpful and the store is always in good order and clean. I've had no issues in this store. The only thing that I might consider a potential downside is that this location is quite busy typically, so if you're looking for a quiet, empty Barnes, this isn't the one!
