Interesting used book store in middle of the shopping area near Lake Anne. Good selection of all kinds of books and while the store ain't huge, they do a great job of using every inch of available space. Prices are pretty good, with most books being half the cover price and the really cheap discount rack in front of the store. Service is friendly and I think they write their sales down in a notebook the old school way. This place was worth a visit on a trip out to Reston and I'll come back if I'm in the area. read more

Cozy little used bookshop in Reston by Lake Anne. Store was quite small and disorganized. There were sections with labels, but signs were difficult to read. I was looking for contemporary modern romance books, and it did not seem like they had an area that was labeled as such however they had a good selection of older books, classics, and children's books, political books, and other genres. Prices are half off retail for paperback books and for hardcover books. The prices were inside the cover. I do think the price is here were a little bit on the higher side. I wish the store was more organized and a little bit easier to find what I was looking for However, I think others would find that they would enjoy visiting this little bookshop. The parking plaza nearby has farmer market on the weekend and this would be a cute place to visit if you were there as well. read more

A cozy, little bookstore in the heart of Reston. They offer a wide range of books from foreign children's classics, language textbooks, adult romance, historical nonfiction, and much more. The shelves are lined up to the top and they have overstock in the back should you be looking for anything in particular not presented on the shelves. The pricing is half-off the list price for paperback and then hardcover was whatever price was written inside the cover. Overall, a fun local find, but not somewhere I'd go out of my way to check out. read more

Call me old fashioned but I like real books, not e-readers. I enjoy the rustle of pages and the smells of their spines. And since I also love the thrill of discovery I was in my element at Reston's Used Book Shop. RUBS has thousands of books to choose from; they're literally floor to ceiling. It's a two room shop with titles organized by their areas of interest. I saw labels for poetry, black studies, science fiction, mysteries & thrillers, humor, health, languages, religion & philosophy to name a few. A lady manning the shop left me alone to browse undisturbed. Or to be more accurate, she was curled in a chair near the front door and was so lost in her book that I assumed she was a customer. I didn't need her help to explore, so no biggie. I found an out of print New Orleans cookbook that looked new except for a few dogeared pages. Amazon had used copies from $28.19 to $56.99 and eBay for $29.99...I got a copy at RUBS for $8.80 with tax. At RUBS, paperbacks are half their original price but they won't sell any book for less than $1. None of the books are marked with stickers so you have to open them to find the price. It's written in pencil inside the front cover. Parking is free and convenient in the huge Lake Anne Village Center lot. The patio offers a charming view of the lake or, if it's raining, you can enjoy your book in the coffee shop a few doors down. Poking through Reston's Used Book Shop was a good way to spend a rainy afternoon. I'm a fan of their satisfying selection of titles at bargain prices. read more

We weren't impressed. Selection was small, prices high and both owners were not friendly to us. I was followed around by one and when I said " ma'am I'm ready to check out" the lady said she was "looking up a book" and waved me to the man not even looking at me. Not a good look for a small business, especially in such a cute location nestled in the woods. We probably would have come back to see what things came in over the months but, we decided against it. You don't treat people like that unless you don't want them to come back. read more

While the shop is a gem to have in Reston the store itself is confusing. I walked in and the shop owners kept at a conversation and could see I was confused but I felt ignored. I finally found the section I was looking for and it was a scavenger hunt. It also took me awhile trying to find the price (inside cover of the book). Family owned and operated, this is a local treasure where you can lose the better part of an hour easily among the stacks. What a great find tucked away at Lake Anne! Not necessarily the type of used book store you'll find original edition books in but you'll find almost all recent bestsellers! The store is quite literally stacked floor to ceiling, which makes it overwhelming and charming at the same time. read more

I found hard-to-find first editions of some of my favorite authors, like Jonathan Lethem, Harry Crews, and Alan Lightman. Perfectly adorable little book shop. Ran by a sweet old couple who know at a glance whether someone is wanting to talk or just get lost in a story. They have every kind of book shoved into their tiny labyrinth of shelves, but you might need to do a little digging to find what you're after. I have had so many amazing finds in this little bookstore that it's on my list of "must stops" whenever I'm on a book buying spree during the weekend. When the Barnes and Noble proves to have the same flat, mass market, fare offered by Books a Million- Reston Used Books gives me tantalizing goodies for a great price. Yes, you will have to search through to find the hidden gems, but they are my one stop shop for affordable historical fiction, sci-fi, and the occasional new age or mythology text. All of the sales people are very nice, don't pressure you to buy anything, and seem to understand just how peaceful and enriching book buying should be. I hope they stick around for another 40 years. read more

Selection is a little bit limited and a little bit scatter-shot, but I'm not sure if I know of a lovelier way to spend an afternoon than searching for something to read at the Reston Used Book Shop, grabbing a drink at the nearby cafe and then sitting and reading by Lake Anne. I hope that this shop will be there for a long time, especially with all of the big box less charming chains going out of business, now more than ever we need to support our local, small businesses. read more

I tried to go to the Reston Used Book Shop to sell books on a Monday evening. I arrived an hour before the store was set to close and was told by the clerk that she was closing up and forgot to lock the door. I said, your website says you're open until 7 and she said, "yeah, but I've been here all day, so I'm leaving." If that wasn't bad enough, I went back two days later afterwork at 3:30pm and the same clerk told they only look at and buy books between 10 and 2. Now, I'll admit that I missed that listing on their website, but the store was completely empty and it would have been very easy for her to accomodate me and look over my bag of books. Additionally, what business sets up their only intake of goods to occur during the peak hours of the work day when most clientele are not going to be available to bring their books in. Reston Used Book Shop has lost this customer for good. read more

The owners are terrific and longtime Reston residents -- supporters of the local community, library patrons, musicians -- this is a shop you want to support and keep in town. Highly encourage everyone to shop here when you can -- this is the kind of local resource that we should all encourage. Their selection is great, their pricing fair, and they are in the Lake Anne Plaza which is generally a wonderful spot to visit and take your out-of-town guests to show them the best that Reston has to offer, including restaurants, boat rentals, fountains, a terrific farmer's market, coffeehouses, music....all within an easy walk of each other. read more

This place gives me some mystical memories. One of my friend finding some treasured Calvin 'n Hobbes books in the spacious salon area. Another, more recent, of the ancient cash register and handwritten bookkeeping, and friendly owners. I just stumbled in twice. I like funky places, especially funky used book stores. Reston Used Book Shop definitely fits in that category. The staff is always friendly, the browsing is fun through shelves that go up to the ceiling and the store has that wonderful smell particular to good used book stores. In one side of the store, near the art books and children's books, there is an area with comfortable chairs to sit a spell and peruse your newfound old treasures. Like any good used book store, the stock changes a lot so it's worth frequenting every few weeks. My favorite section is the foreign language shelf and I've managed to find a few really great (to me at least) nuggets there of French and German SciFi (see my profile!) as well as some of the other lesser studied languages that I enjoy dabbling with. They also buy books or take books for trade, of course, but they tend to be choosy since they only have a limited amount of space. read more

We took 2 bins of books to sell here. The saleswoman took us quickly and worked through our books quickly. However I think she only took about 5% our books. She did give us a good payout though. 10% of the cover price and a 3 to 1 trade for our science fiction books. The shelves were packed with books, which provides a good selection, but they we're hard to sort through. Overall, I liked the store but they could use more organization. read more

This place is just adorable. Not quite all that well organized, but a small and comfortable space with books everywhere, crawling up shelves to the ceiling and stacked on the floor. A readers dream. Its a bit quiet to sit there all day and read, but should really be checked out if you're into the used bookstore thing. It is very comforting to me to see that used book stores like this are still around, especially in an area that seems to cater so much to higher end shops. This place has everything I want in a used book store -- the smell of old books, tight space, books stacked to the ceiling. Prices are a little high, but I imagine rent is expensive here, so I don't fault them. As with most used stores, you never know what you'll find. I was so happy to find a place like this even existed in Reston. This is well worth the visit. Packed to the rafters, every wall is lined from floor to ceiling with a pretty wide variety of books, which are surprisingly well organized. Books are not overpriced- the prices are pretty fair. It's everything a used book store should be, with a cozy and very vintage atmosphere. Staff is very friendly and helpful. I am SO glad I found this place. Do yourself a favor and stop by here, you'll be glad you did. I want to spend all my rainy days curled up in one of their armchairs with a good book, and you will too! read more

Reston Used Book Shop reminds me of a bookstore in Diagon Alley; it's an ancient tiny shop that forces you to navigate through narrow corridors of books stacked high to the ceiling. You might just find a hidden gem in the stacks and get it for a steal, or not find anything and just enjoy yourself browsing. I'll admit, I haven't bought that much there, and It's not exactly organized, but I like the fact that it exists and I support it whole-heartedly. read more

Unique place for book lovers of any type, completely different to other used book stores. This one is like your personal library expanded twenty times, with tall bookends, nice chairs, sofas, lamps, antiques, magazines, thousands of books (for children, fiction, art, design, novels, etc). There's a nice wicker chair outside with a basket full of free used magazines on the side and a table with chairs under a protective umbrella overlooking the plaza and the not so distant lake! Prices are reasonable and the owner can guide you in your search and give suggestions. It's located in the historical Reston Lake Anne complex, surrounded by cafes and restaurants at the edge of the beautiful Lake Anne so you can go and read your book by the lake with your Capuccino, and seat at a bench on the deck, under an umbrella near the water. Some days during the week there is a musician playing outside the store. What else a book lover needs? read more
